For holomorphic selfmaps of the open unit disc U that are not elliptic automorphisms, the Schwarz Lemma and the Denjoy-Wolff Theorem combine to yield a remarkable result: each such map φ has a (necessarily unique) "Denjoy-Wolff point"...

The experience of service learning can be deeply rewarding, whether the service rendered is voluntary or a required part of the curriculum; whether it is part-time or full-time (as it is in most programs of national service); whether it takes place in the community where the college or university is located, in a student's home community, or in other parts of the country-- or overseas in the peace Corps.

A First-Principles Study On Bulk Cuo: Electronic Structures And Native Point Defects, Dangxin Wu Jul 2005

A First-Principles Study On Bulk Cuo: Electronic Structures And Native Point Defects, Dangxin Wu

Physics Theses - Archive

In this thesis, we have performed a first-principles study on strongly correlated monoclinic cupric oxide (CuO) by using the LSDA+U method implemented in the PAW method. Based on the optimized structural parameters, which are in good agreement with the experimental data, the electronic structure and the magnetic properties are obtained. Our calculations show that CuO is a semiconducting material with an indirect gap of about 1.0 eV. The semiconducting nature of CuO from our calculations is consistent with many experiments, but is qualitatively different from the LSDA calculations which incorrectly predict CuO to be metallic. The indirect gap of 1.0 …

Efficiently Managing Security Concerns In Component Based System Design, Ammar Masood, Sahra Sedigh, Arif Ghafoor Jul 2005

Efficiently Managing Security Concerns In Component Based System Design, Ammar Masood, Sahra Sedigh, Arif Ghafoor

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Component-based software development (CBSD) offers many advantages like reduced product time to market, reduced complexity and cost etc. Despite these advantages its wide scale utilization in developing security critical systems is currently hampered because of lack, of suitable design techniques to efficiently manage the complete system security concerns in the development process. The use of commercial of the shelf (COTS) components can introduce various security and reliability risks in the system. In this paper we propose a methodology for efficient management of all the system security concerns involved in the design of component based systems. Our methodology is based on …

Increasing Expressive Vocabulary Through Non-Traditional Instruction, Lisa C. Washart Jul 2005

Increasing Expressive Vocabulary Through Non-Traditional Instruction, Lisa C. Washart

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined vocabulary teaching techniques. Its major purpose was to discover ways of teaching vocabulary to students that motivate them to use the words and allow them to understand and use these words appropriately. This study utilized a qualitative approach, examining instruction through the use of a case study. The study took place in an inclusive fifth grade classroom of twenty-five students. Sixteen of these students participated in the study. A checklist, student writing samples, and field notes were used to gather data surrounding varied forms of instruction and the ability of students to use newly learned words. Collected …

Progressive = Permissive? Not According To John Dewey…Subjects Matter!, Stephen G. Weiss, Anthony A. Defalco, Eileen M. Weiss

Essays in Education

The progressive education movement, which promoted the philosophy of school reform that prevailed among waves of educational innovators throughout the 20th century, has been associated historically with John Dewey and has prided itself on implementing his ‘childcentered’ principles. However, there were major differences between many of the progressives’ attitudes and Dewey’s ideas about learning. To better understand why issues that originally separated Dewey from other progressives continue to be a source of conflict and confusion even today, as exemplified by an article that appeared in an edition of Education Week (Spencer, 2001; Weiner, 2001), this paper examines the philosophy and …

Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati Jul 2005

Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Radio-frequency (rf) superconducting cavities are widely used to increase the energy of a charged particle beam in particle accelerators. The maximum gradients of cavities made of bulk niobium have constantly improved over the last ten years and they are approaching the theoretical limit of the material. Nevertheless, rf tests of niobium cavities are still showing some "anomalous" losses (so-called "Q-drop"), characterized by a marked increase of the surface resistance at high rf fields, in absence of field emission. A low temperature "in-situ" baking under ultra-high vacuum has been successfully applied by several laboratories to reduce those losses and …

Approximate Strategic Reasoning Through Hierarchical Reduction Of Large Symmetric Games, Michael P. Wellman, Daniel M. Reeves, Kevin M. Lochner, Shih-Fen Cheng, Rahul Suri Jul 2005

Approximate Strategic Reasoning Through Hierarchical Reduction Of Large Symmetric Games, Michael P. Wellman, Daniel M. Reeves, Kevin M. Lochner, Shih-Fen Cheng, Rahul Suri

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To deal with exponential growth in the size of a game with the number of agents, we propose an approximation based on a hierarchy of reduced games. The reduced game achieves savings by restricting the number of agents playing any strategy to fixed multiples. We validate the idea through experiments on randomly generated local-effect games. An extended application to strategic reasoning about a complex trading scenario motivates the approach, and demonstrates methods for game-theoretic reasoning over incompletely-specified games at multiple levels of granularity.
