Detecting Similar Html Documents Using A Fuzzy Set Information Retrieval Approach, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Rajiv Yerra Jul 2005

Detecting Similar Html Documents Using A Fuzzy Set Information Retrieval Approach, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Rajiv Yerra

Faculty Publications

Web documents that are either partially or completely duplicated in content are easily found on the Internet these days. Not only do these documents create redundant information on the Web, which take longer to filter unique information and cause additional storage space, but also they degrade the efficiency of Web information retrieval. In this paper, we present a new approach for detecting similar Web documents, especially HTML documents. Our detection approach determines the odd ratio of any two documents, which makes use of the degrees of resemblance of the documents, and graphically displays the locations of similar (not necessarily the …

Economies Of Scale And Cost Efficiencies: A Panel-Data Stochastic-Frontier Analysis Of Real Estate Investment Trusts, Stephen M. Miller, Terrence M. Clauretie, Thomas M. Springer Jul 2005

Economies Of Scale And Cost Efficiencies: A Panel-Data Stochastic-Frontier Analysis Of Real Estate Investment Trusts, Stephen M. Miller, Terrence M. Clauretie, Thomas M. Springer

Economics Working Papers

This paper extends the existing research on real estate investment trust (REIT) operating efficiencies. We estimate a stochastic-frontier panel-data model specifying a translog cost function, covering 1995 to 2003. The results disagree with previous research in that we find little evidence of scale economies and some evidence of scale diseconomies. Moreover, we also generally find smaller inefficiencies than those shown by other REIT studies. Contrary to previous research, the results also show that self-management of a REIT associates with more inefficiency when we measure output with assets. When we use revenue to measure output, selfmanagement associates with less inefficiency. Also …

Conversations Between Anthropologists And Economists, Metin Cosgel Jul 2005

Conversations Between Anthropologists And Economists, Metin Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Interdisciplinary citation patterns and other indicators of the flow and sharing of academic knowledge suggest that economists and anthropologists do not talk to each other. Previous studies of this puzzling trend have typically attributed the problem to methodological differences between the two disciplines. Although there are significant differences between economics and anthropology in behavioral assumptions and modes of inquiry, similar differences exist between them and other disciplines (some with much heavier volumes of cross-citations with economics or anthropology), suggesting that the source of the problem lies elsewhere. This paper considers the problem at a deeper level by examining systematic differences …

Financial Liberalization And Inflationary Dynamics: An Open Economy Analysis, Rangan Gupta Jul 2005

Financial Liberalization And Inflationary Dynamics: An Open Economy Analysis, Rangan Gupta

Economics Working Papers

The paper analyzes the effects of financial liberalization on inflation. We develop a monetary and endogenous growth, dynamic general equilibrium model of a small open semi-industrialized economy, with financial intermediaries subjected to obligatory "high" reserve ratio, serving as the source of financial repression. When calibrated to four Southern European semi-industrialized countries, namely Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal, that typically had high reserve requirements, the model indicates a positive inflation-financial repression relationship irrespective of the the specification of preferences. But the strength of the relationship obtained from the model is found to be much smaller in size than the corresponding empirical …

Robust Monopoly Pricing, Dirk Bergemann, Karl Schlag Jul 2005

Robust Monopoly Pricing, Dirk Bergemann, Karl Schlag

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider a robust version of the classic problem of optimal monopoly pricing with incomplete information. In the robust version of the problem the seller only knows that demand will be in a neighborhood of a given model distribution. We characterize the optimal pricing policy under two distinct, but related, decision criteria with multiple priors: (i) maximin expected utility and (ii) minimax expected regret. While the classic monopoly policy and the maximin criterion yield a single deterministic price, minimax regret always prescribes a random pricing policy, or equivalently, a multi-item menu policy. The resulting optimal pricing policy under either criterion …

Mining Frequent And Periodic Association Patterns, Guanling Chen, Heng Huang, Minkyong Kim Jul 2005

Mining Frequent And Periodic Association Patterns, Guanling Chen, Heng Huang, Minkyong Kim

Computer Science Technical Reports

Profiling the clients' movement behaviors is useful for mobility modeling, anomaly detection, and location prediction. In this paper, we study clients' frequent and periodic movement patterns in a campus wireless network. We use offline data-mining algorithms to discover patterns from clients' association history, and analyze the reported patterns using statistical methods. Many of our results reflect the common characteristics of a typical academic campus, though we also observed some unusual association patterns. There are two challenges: one is to remove noise from data for efficient pattern discovery, and the other is to interpret discovered patterns. We address the first challenge …

Why Are School Districts Abandoning The Core-Plus Mathematics Curriculum, Amber Rae Richgels Jul 2005

Why Are School Districts Abandoning The Core-Plus Mathematics Curriculum, Amber Rae Richgels

Mathematics Graduate Theses

In this paper, the author establishes that high schools are abandoning the Core-Plus Mathematics curriculum and determines the need for curricular reform and the motivation to develop such standards-based programs. She discovers that although Core- Plus is a nationally recognized, exemplary mathematics curriculum, school districts are deciding to discontinue the curricular option of Core-Plus. The author reviewed literature and interviewed teachers from schools that have recently decided to abandon Core-Plus in attempt to determine factors leading to these decisions. This paper discusses those interviews, provides suggestions for the future adoption of Core-Plus, and concludes with recommendations that further study be …

Competition, Consumer Welfare, And The Social Cost Of Monopoly, Yoon-Ho Alex Lee, Donald J. Brown Jul 2005

Competition, Consumer Welfare, And The Social Cost Of Monopoly, Yoon-Ho Alex Lee, Donald J. Brown

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Conventional deadweight loss measures of the social cost of monopoly ignore, among other things, the social cost of inducing competition and thus cannot accurately capture the loss in social welfare. In this Article, we suggest an alternative method of measuring the social cost of monopoly. Using elements of general equilibrium theory, we propose a social cost metric where the benchmark is the Pareto optimal state of the economy that uses the least amount of resources, consistent with consumers’ utility levels in the monopolized state. If the primary goal of antitrust policy is the enhancement of consumer welfare, then the proper …

Branch Rickey’S Equation Fifty Years Later, Ray C. Fair, Danielle Catambay Jul 2005

Branch Rickey’S Equation Fifty Years Later, Ray C. Fair, Danielle Catambay

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper analyzes Branch Rickey’s 1954 equation in a regression context. The results for 1934–1953 are consistent with Rickey’s conclusions, and the equation holds up well when extended 51 years. Two of the main conclusions are that on-base percentage dominates batting average and that offense and defense are equally important. Perhaps Rickey was as good as he thought he was?

Design Concepts And Process Analysis For Transmuter Fuel Manufacturing: Quarterly Progress Report #3, Jamil M. Renno, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

Value Engineering (VE) is used to maximize the product of a process while utilizing the minimum amount of resources. In previous reporting periods a powder processing hot cell was designed and simulated. A VE study will be initiated for this work cell. A manipulator reliability study and a workspace study are performed in this work period. The above noted studies can be combined, and improvements can be made in the operations of the work cell.

Spm Oxidation And Parallel Writing On Zirconium Nitride Thin Films, N. Farkas, J. R. Comer, G. Zhang, Edward A. Evans, R. D. Ramsier, J. A. Dagata

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Systematic investigation of the SPM oxidation process of sputter-deposited ZrN thin films is reported. During the intrinsic part of the oxidation, the density of the oxide increases until the total oxide thickness is approximately twice the feature height. Further oxide growth is sustainable as the system undergoes plastic flow followed by delamination from the ZrN-silicon interface keeping the oxide density constant. ZrN exhibits superdiffusive oxidation kinetics in these single tip SPM studies. We extend this work to the fabrication of parallel oxide patterns 70 nm in height covering areas in the square centimeter range. This simple, quick, and well-controlled parallel …

Mathematical Framework For Simulation Of Quantum Fields In Complex Interferometers Using The Two-Photon Formalism, Thomas Corbitt, Yanbei Chen, Nergis Mavalvala Jul 2005

Mathematical Framework For Simulation Of Quantum Fields In Complex Interferometers Using The Two-Photon Formalism, Thomas Corbitt, Yanbei Chen, Nergis Mavalvala

Faculty Publications

We present a mathematical framework for simulation of optical fields in complex gravitational-wave interferometers. The simulation framework uses the two-photon formalism for optical fields and includes radiation pressure effects, an important addition required for simulating signal and noise fields in next-generation interferometers with high circulating power. We present a comparison of results from the simulation with analytical calculation and show that accurate agreement is achieved. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

On Atkin-Swinnerton-Dyer Congruence Relations, Wen Ching Winnie Li, Ling Long, Zifeng Yang

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we exhibit a noncongruence subgroup Γ whose space of weight 3 cusp forms S3(Γ) admits a basis satisfying the Atkin-Swinnerton-Dyer congruence relations with two weight 3 newforms for certain congruence subgroups. This gives a modularity interpretation of the motive attached to S3(Γ) by Scholl and also verifies the Atkin-Swinnerton-Dyer congruence conjecture for this space. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. Evidence-Based Research In Complementary And Alternative Medicine I: History, Francesco Chiappelli, Paolo Prolo, Olivia S. Cajulis Jul 2005

Evidence-Based Research In Complementary And Alternative Medicine I: History, Francesco Chiappelli, Paolo Prolo, Olivia S. Cajulis

Senior Honors Projects

Contemporary Western medicine has witnessed a fragmentation of our conceptualization of the medical endeavor into ‘traditional medicine’ and ‘non-traditional medicine’. The former is meant to refer to the Western medical tradition, the latter encompasses both ‘complementary’ and ‘alternative’ medical practices. Complementary medicine complements conventional medical treatments, and alternative modes of medical interventions are meant to replace traditional Western medicine. Evidence-based research must be directed at establishing the best available evidence in complementary and alternative medicine. This paper is the first of a set of four ‘lectures’ that reviews the process of evidence-based research, and discusses its implications and applications for …

Symmetry Operator For The Maxwell Equations, Jose O. Andrade Jul 2005

Symmetry Operator For The Maxwell Equations, Jose O. Andrade

Graduate Student Papers (Physics)

In this work is shown that when the background space-time is type D solution of the Einstein vacuum equations with or without cosmological constant, a symmetry operator can be found for the Maxwell equations, as a consequence of that each component of the electromagnetic spinor satisfies a decoupled equation and that all the vacuum type D metrics admit a two index Killing spinor. Besides, the Maxwell equations are solved when the background space-time is the Carter A metric.

The Quantum Anharmonic Potential With The Linear Delta Expansion, Luis M. Sandoval Jul 2005

The Quantum Anharmonic Potential With The Linear Delta Expansion, Luis M. Sandoval

Graduate Student Papers (Physics)

In this report the problem of solving the Schrödinger equation for an anharmonic potential is treated using the technique known as the linear delta expansion. The method works by identifying three different scales in the problem: an asymptotic scale, which depends uniquely on the form of the potential at large distances; an intermediate scale, still characterized by an exponential decay of the wavefunction; and, finally, a short distance scale, in which the wavefunction is sizable. The method is found to be suitable to obtain both energy eigenvalues and wavefunctions.

Protection Against Experimental Autoimmune Myocarditis Is Mediated By Interleukin-10-Producing T Cells That Are Controlled By Dendritic Cells, Ya Li, Janet S. Heuser, Stanley D. Kosanke, Mark E. Hemric, Madeleine W. Cunningham Jul 2005

Protection Against Experimental Autoimmune Myocarditis Is Mediated By Interleukin-10-Producing T Cells That Are Controlled By Dendritic Cells, Ya Li, Janet S. Heuser, Stanley D. Kosanke, Mark E. Hemric, Madeleine W. Cunningham

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM) can be induced in the Lewis rat by cardiac myosin or its cryptic S2-16 peptide epitope (amino acids1052 to 1076). To investigate cellular mechanisms and the role of antigen-presenting cells in regulation of myocarditis, we induced protection against EAM in Lewis rats by administration of S2-16 peptide in incomplete Freund’s adjuvant (IFA). Protection to EAM was associated with activation of S2-16-reactive splenocytes secreting high levels of interleukin (IL)-10 and reduced levels of interferon- and IL-2. Adoptive transfer of S2-16:IFA-induced splenocytes producing IL-10 suppressed myocarditis induction in syngeneic recipients, suggesting their regulatory cell nature. However, exposure of …

How Deep In Molecular Space Can Periodicity Be Found?, Ken Luk, Ray Hefferlin, Gabriel Johnson

Faculty Works

We find occasional echoes of periodicity, i.e. the trends found in the chart of the elements, in several-atom (up to 32) molecules and use it to make forecasts for molecular data, some of which have been confirmed.
