A Method For Characterizing The Properties Of Industrial Foams, Shaun M. Salisbury Aug 2005

A Method For Characterizing The Properties Of Industrial Foams, Shaun M. Salisbury

Theses and Dissertations

Assessing the effect of foam layers on transport phenomena is of significant interest in many industries, so a method for predicting foam layer properties has been developed. A model of the propagation of radiation from an amplitude-modulated laser beam through a non-absorbing foam layer has been developed using diffusion theory. Measurements predicted by diffusion theory were compared to results generated using Monte Carlo methods for a variety of foam layer properties in both the time-domain and the frequency-domain. The properties that were varied include the layer thickness, the scattering coefficient, and the asymmetry parameter. Layer thicknesses between 8.5 mm and …

Background

In recent years, allergy to natural rubber latex has emerged as a major allergy among certain occupational groups and patients with underlying diseases. The sensitization and development of latex allergy has been attributed to exposure to products containing residual latex proteins. Although improved manufacturing procedures resulted in a considerable reduction of new cases, the potential risk for some patient groups is still great. In addition the prevalent cross-reactivity of latex proteins with other food allergens poses a major concern. A number of purified allergens and a few commercial kits are currently available, but no concerted effort was undertaken to …

Business Process Outsourcing: An Exploratory Study, David Johnson Aug 2005

Business Process Outsourcing: An Exploratory Study, David Johnson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the emergence of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in white collar occupations. Recent BPO practices are compared to the offshore outsourcing of production in the context of the shift from Fordist to flexible production. The study considers BPO in light of Harry Braverman's theory of work degradation and whether or not BPO extends the traditional division of labor between conception and execution to higher skilled white collar occupations. An exploratory qualitative approach comprised of informant interviews, a focus group, and literature review was used to analyze how BPO occurs, why it happens, and where it takes place. I …

Adaptive Estimation And Detection Techniques With Applications, Jifeng Ru Aug 2005

Adaptive Estimation And Detection Techniques With Applications, Jifeng Ru

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Hybrid systems have been identified as one of the main directions in control theory and attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their huge diversity of engineering applications. Multiplemodel (MM) estimation is the state-of-the-art approach to many hybrid estimation problems. Existing MM methods with fixed structure usually perform well for problems that can be handled by a small set of models. However, their performance is limited when the required number of models to achieve a satisfactory accuracy is large due to time evolution of the true mode over a large continuous space. In this research, variable-structure multiple model (VSMM) …

Power System Fault Detection Using Conductor Dynamics, Jeff Dicharry Aug 2005

Power System Fault Detection Using Conductor Dynamics, Jeff Dicharry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Power system fault detection is conventionally achieved using current and potential measurements. An alternate and unconventional form of protective relaying is feasible using rigid bus conductor motion as the means of detection. The research presented focuses on the detection of power system faults using visual displacement of conductor spans. Substation rigid bus conductor motion is modeled using dual spring-mass systems for accurate representation of conductor response to electromagnetic forces generated during system faults. Bundled rigid conductors have advantages including detection independent of system load currents and improved ability to detect polyphase and single phase faults. The dynamic motion of the …

Electrodisinfection Of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Mark Peterson Aug 2005

Electrodisinfection Of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Mark Peterson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

To avoid the spread of disease from sewage treatment effluents, pathogenic microorganisms present must be destroyed by one or a combination of disinfection methods. Chlorine remains the predominant disinfectant used although it consumes considerable amounts of energy and has associated exposure risks from production, transportation and storage of this poisonous gas. In addition to bacteria and other objectionable microorganisms, color, suspended and colloidal solids also require removal from water for reuse. Aluminum and iron additions have been used to coagulate and remove non-settleable solids. By electrically dissolving aluminum to form solids-bridging aluminum hydroxide, the water itself can also be disinfected …

How A Museum Exhibit Functions As A Literacy Event For Viewers, B. A. Chauvin Aug 2005

How A Museum Exhibit Functions As A Literacy Event For Viewers, B. A. Chauvin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate museum learning by describing the experiences of selected museum visitors who viewed a specified exhibit. The research question is: How does a museum exhibit function as a literacy event for viewers? The responses to interview questions described what viewing was like for two subjects. The paradigm for this research is New Literacy Studies (NLS). NLS considers the cultural issues surrounding literacy experiences. NLS assumes that language arts reflect cultural differences and literacy involves the process of constructing meaning (Barton, Hamilton, & Ivanic, 2000; Gee, 2000; Street, 1995). This model of literacy considers …

Sex And Virtual Reality: Posture And Motion Sickness, Moira Flanagan Aug 2005

Sex And Virtual Reality: Posture And Motion Sickness, Moira Flanagan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It is well established that exposure to virtual motion environments (VME) can elicit postural instability (PI) in addition to motion sickness (MS). While research has found sex differences in motion sickness, the results of experimental studies are equivocal regarding these differences, and previous studies utilizing VME have failed to address the factor of sex differences in terms of hormonal fluctuations, which may also be instrumental in behavioral responses to VME, such as PI. The intent of this investigation was to determine whether exposure to VME, during various phases of the menstrual cycle (premenstrual, permenstrual, ovulation) would reveal sex differences in …

Prototype Digital Forensics Repository, Sonal Mandelecha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The explosive growth in technology has led to a new league of a crime involving identity theft, stealing trade secrets, malicious virus attacks, hacking of DVD players, etc. The law enforcement community which has been trained to deal with traditional form of crime, is now being trained in a new realm of Digital Forensics. Forensics investigators have realized that often the most valuable resource available to them is experience and knowledge of fellow investigators. But there is seldom an explicit mechanism for disseminating this knowledge. Hence the same problems and mistakes continue to resurface and the same solutions are re-invented. …

New Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites Obtained By Topochemical Methods, Doinita Neiner Aug 2005

New Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites Obtained By Topochemical Methods, Doinita Neiner

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Topotactic routes have been used to produce new materials with tunable electronic and magnetic properties. The host materials were the single and triple layered Ruddlesden-Popper compounds, NaLnTiO4 (Ln = La and Gd) and A2La2Ti3O10 (A = Li and K). These compounds consist of [LnTiO4]- and [La2Ti3O10]2-, respectively, perovskite layers interleaved with two alkali metal ion strata. The topotactic routes used in this research were ion exchange and intercalation. Ion exchange was used to replace the cations in the interlayer space with a cationic unit: vanadyl or the transition metal ion, nickel. This ion exchange route opens the structure to further …

Spread Spectrum Is Good—But It Doesn’T Obsolete Nbc V. Us!, Charles L. Jackson, Raymond L. Pickholtz, Dale N. Hatfield

ExpressO

This short note addresses a popular misconception—that new technologies such as spread spectrum have eliminated the problem of radio interference. That is false. Spread spectrum is a great technology, but it does not eliminate the problem of interference. Similarly, although some have asserted otherwise, signals below the noise floor can create interference.

We first show that a number of authors have embraced these misconceptions in works addressing public policy. Briefly, a basic argument of these papers is: (1) spread spectrum eliminates the problem of interference; (2) the Supreme Court’s decision in NBC v. US upholding the Communications Act of 1934 …

Measurement Of The T T̅ Production Cross Section In P P̅ Collisions At Sqrt(S)=1.96 Tev Using Lepton Plus Jets Events With Semileptonic B Decays To Muons, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the t[overline t] production cross section using 194 pb-1 of CDF II data using events with a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. The measurement assumes 100% t→Wb branching fraction. Events consistent with tt̅ decay are found by identifying jets containing heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The dominant backgrounds are evaluated directly from the data. Based on 20 candidate events and an expected background of 9.5±1.1 events, we measure a production cross section of 5.3±3.3-1.0+1.3 pb, in agreement with the standard model.

Optimum Placement Of Satellite Components With Genetic Algorithms, Ayman Kassem Aug 2005

Optimum Placement Of Satellite Components With Genetic Algorithms, Ayman Kassem

Small Satellite Conference

In this paper, the formulation and the solution procedure for optimal placement of satellite components is given. Satellite internal space is discretized into three- dimensional grid (cubes) such as each cube represents a unit volume. Components or subsystems are approximated by a box with integer dimensions based on its largest three dimensions. The placement problem is formulated as a discreet optimization problem and solved with genetic algorithms. The optimization variables represent the location of the center of mass of each component. Different constraints and requirements including the non- intersection of components are also applied. The solution procedure was tested with …

Application Of A Multiple Testing Procedure Controlling The Proportion Of False Positives To Protein And Bacterial Data, Merrill D. Birkner, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Simultaneously testing multiple hypotheses is important in high-dimensional biological studies. In these situations, one is often interested in controlling the Type-I error rate, such as the proportion of false positives to total rejections (TPPFP) at a specific level, alpha. This article will present an application of the E-Bayes/Bootstrap TPPFP procedure, presented in van der Laan et al. (2005), which controls the tail probability of the proportion of false positives (TPPFP), on two biological datasets. The two data applications include firstly, the application to a mass-spectrometry dataset of two leukemia subtypes, AML and ALL. The protein data measurements include intensity and …

Estimating The Discrepancy Between Computer Model Data And Field Data: Modeling Techniques For Deterministic And Stochastic Computer Simulators, Emily Joy Dastrup Aug 2005

Estimating The Discrepancy Between Computer Model Data And Field Data: Modeling Techniques For Deterministic And Stochastic Computer Simulators, Emily Joy Dastrup

Theses and Dissertations

Computer models have become useful research tools in many disciplines. In many cases a researcher has access to data from a computer simulator and from a physical system. This research discusses Bayesian models that allow for the estimation of the discrepancy between the two data sources. We fit two models to data in the field of electrical engineering. Using this data we illustrate ways of modeling both a deterministic and a stochastic simulator when specific parametric assumptions can be made about the discrepancy term.

Efficient And Effective Schemes For Streaming Media Delivery, Cheng Huang Aug 2005

Efficient And Effective Schemes For Streaming Media Delivery, Cheng Huang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The rapid expansion of the Internet and the increasingly wide deployment of wireless networks provide opportunities to deliver streaming media content to users at anywhere, anytime. To ensure good user experience, it is important to battle adversary effects, such as delay, loss and jitter. In this thesis, we first study efficient loss recovery schemes, which require pure XOR operations. In particular, we propose a novel scheme capable of recovering up to 3 packet losses, and it has the lowest complexity among all known schemes. We also propose an efficient algorithm for array codes decoding, which achieves significant throughput gain and …

We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus–nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au + Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment of a quark–gluon plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity …

Incremental Learning Of Discrete Hidden Markov Models, German Florez-Larrahondo Aug 2005

Incremental Learning Of Discrete Hidden Markov Models, German Florez-Larrahondo

Theses and Dissertations

We address the problem of learning discrete hidden Markov models from very long sequences of observations. Incremental versions of the Baum-Welch algorithm that approximate the beta-values used in the backward procedure are commonly used for this problem since their memory complexity is independent of the sequence length. However, traditional approaches have two main disadvantages: the approximation of the beta-values deviates far from the real values, and the learning algorithm requires previous knowledge of the topology of the model. This dissertation describes a new incremental Baum-Welch algorithm with a novel backward procedure that improves the approximation of the â-values based on …

Memory-Efficient Graph Search Applied To Multiple Sequence Alignment, Rong Zhou Aug 2005

Memory-Efficient Graph Search Applied To Multiple Sequence Alignment, Rong Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Graph search is used in many areas of computer science. It is well-known that the scalability of graph-search algorithms such as A* is limited by their memory requirements. In this dissertation, I describe three complementary strategies for reducing the memory requirements of graph-search algorithms, especially for multiple sequence alignment (a central problem in computational molecular biology). These search strategies dramatically increase the range and difficulty of multiple sequence alignment problems that can be solved. The first strategy uses a divide-and-conquer method of solution reconstruction, and one of my contributions is to show that when divide-and-conquer solution reconstruction is used, a …

Improving Instruction Fetch Rate With Code Pattern Cache For Superscalar Architecture, Azam Muhammad Beg Aug 2005

Improving Instruction Fetch Rate With Code Pattern Cache For Superscalar Architecture, Azam Muhammad Beg

Theses and Dissertations

In the past, instruction fetch speeds have been improved by using cache schemes that capture the actual program flow. In this proposal, we present the architecture of a new instruction cache named code pattern cache (CPC); the cache is used with superscalar processors. CPC?s operation is based on the fundamental principles that: common programs tend to repeat their execution patterns; and efficient storage of a program flow can enhance the performance of an instruction fetch mechanism. CPC saves basic blocks (sets of instructions separated by control instructions) and their boundary addresses while the code is running. Basic blocks and their …

Exploiting Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Data Via Spectral Band Grouping For Dimensionality Reduction And Multiclassifiers, Shilpa Venkataraman Aug 2005

Exploiting Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Data Via Spectral Band Grouping For Dimensionality Reduction And Multiclassifiers, Shilpa Venkataraman

Theses and Dissertations

To overcome the dimensionality curse of hyperspectral data, an investigation has been done on the use of grouping spectral bands, followed by feature level fusion and classifier decision fusion, to develop an automated target recognition (ATR) system for data reduction and enhanced classification. The entire span of spectral bands in the hyperspectral data is subdivided into groups based on performance metrics. Feature extraction is done using supervised methods as well as unsupervised methods. The effects of classification of the lower dimension data by parametric, as well as non-parametric, classifiers are studied. Further, multiclassifiers and decision level fusion using Qualified Majority …
