Pyroelectric Study Of Polarization Switching In Langmuir-Blodgett Films Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride Trifluoroethylene), A.V. Sorokin, V.M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme Aug 2005

Pyroelectric Study Of Polarization Switching In Langmuir-Blodgett Films Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride Trifluoroethylene), A.V. Sorokin, V.M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The ferroelectric switching in Langmuir-Blodgett films of poly (vinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene) is studied. The films have a distribution of switching times several decades wide. Nearly a half of the film volume may be switched faster than 1 ms, though complete switching of a whole sample may require 100 s or more. The switching occurs through a domain nucleation and growth mechanism. The decay of polarization at zero bias is logarithmic in time, with a constant rate below 5% per decade at room temperatures. The coercive voltage may be as low as 5 V, which makes the films promising for use …

Deterring Roper’S Juveniles: Why Immature Criminal Youth Require The Death Penalty More Than Adults – A Law & Economics Approach, Moin A. Yahya Aug 2005

Deterring Roper’S Juveniles: Why Immature Criminal Youth Require The Death Penalty More Than Adults – A Law & Economics Approach, Moin A. Yahya

ExpressO

In Roper v. Simmons, the United States Supreme Court declared the death penalty for juveniles unconstitutional. It relied on three reasons, one of which concerns this article, namely the theory that juveniles are less culpable and deterrable than adults. The Court relied on the American Medical Association’s amicus brief which purported to show scientifically that juveniles had less developed brains than adults. The Court characterized juveniles as being risk-lovers who highly preferred the present over the future, who loved gains no matter how risky but did not care for losses, and who could not engage in proper cost-benefit analysis, because …

Efficacy Of Aircraft Mounted Lighting To Reduce Bird Strikes, Scott T. Philibin Aug 2005

Efficacy Of Aircraft Mounted Lighting To Reduce Bird Strikes, Scott T. Philibin

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

A question has lingered over the Aviation Industry for over 30 years. Can we improve the visibility of aircraft to birds so as to reduce the probability of bird aircraft collisions? At the outset, I want to make clear that reducing bird hazards to aircraft is a comprehensive and systemic problem which can be mitigated in part by active control of causative factors in and around airports. However, aircraft rapidly transition out of the airport boundary in a matter of seconds and are still transitioning miles away from the airport at altitudes where birds may still be commonly found. It …

Low-Temperature Activation Conditions For Pamam Dendrimer Templated Pt Nanoparticles, Anil Singh, Bert D. Chandler Aug 2005

Low-Temperature Activation Conditions For Pamam Dendrimer Templated Pt Nanoparticles, Anil Singh, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

Surface immobilized polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer templated Pt nanoparticles were employed as precursors to heterogeneous catalysts. CO oxidation catalysis and in situ infrared spectroscopy were used to evaluate conditions for dendrimer removal. Infrared spectroscopy showed thatPAMAMdendrimer amide bonds begin decomposing at temperatures as low as 75 °C. Although the amide stretches are completely removed after 3 h of oxidation at 300 °C, 16 h were required to reach maximum catalytic activity. Further treatment under oxidizing or reducing atmospheres did not cause substantial changes in activity. Infrared spectroscopy of the activated materials indicated that organic residues, probably surface carboxylates, are formed during …

Semiparametric Inferences For Association With Semi-Competing Risks Data, Debashis Ghosh Aug 2005

Semiparametric Inferences For Association With Semi-Competing Risks Data, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In many biomedical studies, it is of interest to assess dependence between bivariate failure time data. We focus here on a special type of such data, referred to as semi-competing risks data. In this article, we develop methods for making inferences regarding dependence of semi-competing risks data across strata of a discrete covariate Z. A class of rank statistics for testing constancy of association across strata are proposed; its asymptotic properties are also derived. We develop a novel resampling-based technique for calculating the variances of the proposed test statistics. In addition, we develop methods for combining test statistics for assessing …

Simultaneous Estimation Procedures And Multiple Testing: A Decision-Theoretic Framework, Debashis Ghosh Aug 2005

Simultaneous Estimation Procedures And Multiple Testing: A Decision-Theoretic Framework, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

There is recent tremendous interest in statistical methods regarding the false discovery rate (FDR). Two classes of literature on this topic exist. In the first, authors have proposed sequential testing procedures that control the false discovery rate. For the second, authors have studied the procedures involving FDR in a univariate mixture model setting. We consider a decision-theoretic approach to the assessment of FDR-based methods. In particular, we attempt to reconcile the current literature on false discovery rate procedures with more classical simultaneous estimation procedures. Formulation of the link will allow us to apply results from decision theory; we can then …

Shrunken P-Values For Assessing Differential Expression, With Applications To Genomic Data Analysis, Debashis Ghosh Aug 2005

Shrunken P-Values For Assessing Differential Expression, With Applications To Genomic Data Analysis, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

n many scientific problems involving high-throughput technology, inference must be made involving several hundreds or thousands of hypotheses. Recent attention has focused on how to address the multiple testing issue; much focus has been devoted towards use of the false discovery rate. In this article, we consider an alternative estimation procedure titled shrunken p-values for assessing differential expression (SPADE). The estimators are motivated by risk considerations from decision theory and lead to a completely new method for adjustment in the multiple testing problem. Some theoretical results are outlined. The proposed methodology is illustrated using simulation studies and with application to …

Applying Cognitive Psychology To Education, Training And Testing: Review Of Experimental Cognitive Psychology And Its Applications, A. F. Healy (Ed.)., Brian H. Bornstein Aug 2005

Applying Cognitive Psychology To Education, Training And Testing: Review Of Experimental Cognitive Psychology And Its Applications, A. F. Healy (Ed.)., Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This book, which is part of the American Psychological Association’s Decade of Behavior series, is both less and more than it seems. Its title sounds like it would be suitable for a cognitive psychology laboratory course, but its scope is too narrow for that. It focuses largely on a relatively small subset of applied cognitive psychological topics—education, training, and testing—and the research traditions of three (albeit three distinguished and influential) researchers: Lyle Bourne, Walter Kintsch, and Thomas Landauer. In that sense, then, the book is less than it seems. In another sense, though, it is more than it seems. In …

Opal Creek: The Framing Of A Policy Controversy, James Floyd Aug 2005

Opal Creek: The Framing Of A Policy Controversy, James Floyd

Dissertations and Theses

The denouement of conflict is essential in the process of crafting public policy. The settlement of clashes over who get what, who pays, and who benefits is a critical component of a process described as decision making in the public interest. However, in some cases, the process results in unresolved controversy rather than the formulation of public policy. This may result from too little time being allocated to problem setting because of a rush to find problem solutions.

Conflict arises in public disputes due to a mixture of interests and values by multiple parties and the expression of divergent views …

An Acoustical Analysis Of Domes Coupled To Rooms, With Special Application To The Darussholah Mosque, In East Java, Indonesia, Sentagi Sesotya Utami Aug 2005

An Acoustical Analysis Of Domes Coupled To Rooms, With Special Application To The Darussholah Mosque, In East Java, Indonesia, Sentagi Sesotya Utami

Theses and Dissertations

Concave surfaces are often considered to be detrimental or precarious in room acoustics, especially because of the impact they have on the distribution of sound energy. However, it is often difficult to avoid such surfaces in buildings with specific architectural functions. A primary example of this involves mosques, which are sacred places of worship for Muslims. In keeping with the Islamic architectural style, most mosques incorporate a symbolic centralized domed ceiling as part of their room structures. These domes are open on the bottom and coupled to the acoustic spaces below. In many cases, the lower spaces may be idealized …

The Clash Of Symmetries In A Randall-Sundrum-Like Spacetime, Gareth Dando, Aharon Davidson, Damien P. George, Raymond R. Volkas, Kameshwar C. Wali Aug 2005

The Clash Of Symmetries In A Randall-Sundrum-Like Spacetime, Gareth Dando, Aharon Davidson, Damien P. George, Raymond R. Volkas, Kameshwar C. Wali

Physics - All Scholarship

We present a toy model that exhibits clash-of-symmetries style Higgs field kink configurations in a Randall-Sundrum-like spacetime. The model has two complex scalar fields Phi_{1,2}, with a sextic potential obeying global U(1)xU(1) and discrete Phi_1Phi_2 interchange symmetries. The scalar fields are coupled to 4+1 dimensional gravity endowed with a bulk cosmological constant. We show that the coupled Einstein-Higgs field equations have an interesting analytic solution provided the sextic potential adopts a particular form. The 4+1 metric is shown to be that of a smoothed-out Randall-Sundrum type of spacetime. The thin-brane Randall-Sundrum limit, whereby the Higgs field kinks become step functions, …

A Numerical Method For Determining Photoconductor Mobilities, Carol Panepinto Aug 2005

A Numerical Method For Determining Photoconductor Mobilities, Carol Panepinto

Theses

A photoconductor's mobility is a measure of the speed at which electrons migrate through the material under the influence of an electric field. The mobility determines how long a packet of charge takes to go through the photoconductor. It also determines how much and in what manner the E-field changes during the packet transit. The problem in which we are interested is inferring the mobility of a photoconductor from time-of-f light measurements, that is, from measurements of the current produced per unit time by a known charge packet. Mathematically, the problem is an initial-boundary value problem for a nonlinear, non-local, …

How To Find Students’ Inner Geek, Marc Zimmer Aug 2005

How To Find Students’ Inner Geek, Marc Zimmer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

As a chemistry professor at a liberal-arts college, the author believes it is his job to find the youthful awe in his students and draw it out so that they will be intrigued once again by science and nature, so that they want to learn about equilibria, pH, and redox reactions. He has to go fishing inside their brains, to find, hook, and reel in their scientific spirit. Most of the students he teaches have not yet deeply suppressed their inner science geek. He can hook almost all of them if he uses the lures available to professors everywhere: enthusiasm, …

Effects Of Pressure On Coal Pyrolysis At High Heating Rates And Char Combustion, Dong Zeng Aug 2005

Effects Of Pressure On Coal Pyrolysis At High Heating Rates And Char Combustion, Dong Zeng

Theses and Dissertations

Clean coal technologies are now becoming popular because of their high efficiencies and minimal environmental impact. Higher operating pressures have been applied to clean coal technologies. The effect of pressure on coal pyrolysis and char combustion has been extensively studied but still remains to be further explored. The objective of this project was to characterize high pressure, high heating rate coal pyrolysis and char combustion, with emphasis on improving coal/char high pressure combustion models. A flat-flame burner was used in a high pressure laminar flow facility to conduct high temperature, high heating rate pyrolysis and combustion experiments for four coals. …

How High School Science-Related Experiences Influenced Career Persistence, Andrew Dwight Shaw Aug 2005

How High School Science-Related Experiences Influenced Career Persistence, Andrew Dwight Shaw

Dissertations

The events of 9/11 brought into focus two ongoing trends that were present before this tragedy and have continued since: 1) The United States needs more scientists if it is to ensure its freedoms and maintain its economy. 2) The number of scientists in the ¿pipeline¿ is declining because of the diminished presence of foreign scientists (they are wanted in their own countries), the under-representation of minorities and women, and the reduced numbers of students able and willing to take on the scholastic rigors necessary for a science or engineering degree. Though much has been written about improving science education, …

A Nested-Pcr With An Internal Amplification Control For The Detection And Differentiation Of Bartonella Henselae And B. Clarridgeiae: An Examination Of Cats In Trinidad, Joanne Rampersad, John D. Watkins, Michael S. Samlal, Raymond Deonanan, Shalini Ramsubeik, David Ammons

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Background

Bartonella species are bacterial blood parasites of animals capable of causing disease in both animals and man. Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) in humans is caused mainly by Bartonella henselae and is acquired from the cat, which serves as a reservoir for the bacteria. A second species, B. clarridgeiae is also implicated in the disease. Diagnosis of Bartonellosis by culture requires a week or more of incubation on enriched media containing blood, and recovery is often complicated by faster growing contaminating bacteria and fungi. PCR has been explored as an alternative to culture for both the detection and species identification of …

Search For Long-Lived Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons In Pp̅ Collisions At √2=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Aug 2005

Search For Long-Lived Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons In Pp̅ Collisions At √2=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H±±), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb-1 of data collected in pp̅ collisions at √2=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude HL±± and HR±± bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c2 and 109 GeV/c2, respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H±± mass below 146 GeV/c2. All limits are quoted at …

Genetic Algorithm Based Charge Optimization Of Lithium-Ion Batteries In Small Satellites , Saurabh Jain, Dan Simon Aug 2005

Genetic Algorithm Based Charge Optimization Of Lithium-Ion Batteries In Small Satellites , Saurabh Jain, Dan Simon

Small Satellite Conference

Small spacecraft that are powered by solar energy have limitations because of the size of their solar panels. With the limitations on the solar panel size, it is generally hard to comply with the demands from all the satellite subsystems, payloads and batteries at the same time. To overcome these problems we have developed and adopted a power management optimization scheme that runs in real time in the satellite. The proposed power management scheme primarily involves scheduling of loads (various subsystem operations, payload experimentation, battery charging, etc.) so that power utilization and thereby the charge of the batteries is at …

A Tale Of Three Sisters: Reconstructing The Holocene Glacial History And Paleoclimate Record At Three Sisters Volcanoes, Oregon, United States, Shaun Andrew Marcott Aug 2005

A Tale Of Three Sisters: Reconstructing The Holocene Glacial History And Paleoclimate Record At Three Sisters Volcanoes, Oregon, United States, Shaun Andrew Marcott

Dissertations and Theses

At least four glacial stands occurred since 6.5 ka B.P. based on moraines located on the eastern flanks of the Three Sisters Volcanoes and the northern flanks of Broken Top Mountain in the Central Oregon Cascades. The youngest of these advances was the Little Ice Age (LIA) glaciation, which reached its maximum advance 150-200 yrs. B.P. and is defined by the large sharp crested and unvegetated moraines adjacent to the modern glaciers. In isolated locations less than 100 m downslope from these moraines, a second set of sparsely vegetated lateral moraines marks the Late-Neoglacial stand of the glaciers between 2.1 …

The Theory Of Trackability With Applications To Sensor Networks, Valentino Crespi, George Cybenko, Guofei Jiang Aug 2005

The Theory Of Trackability With Applications To Sensor Networks, Valentino Crespi, George Cybenko, Guofei Jiang

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper, we formalize the concept of tracking in a sensor network and develop a rigorous theory of {\em trackability} that investigates the rate of growth of the number of consistent tracks given a sequence of observations made by the sensor network. The phenomenon being tracked is modelled by a nondeterministic finite automaton and the sensor network is modelled by an observer capable of detecting events related, typically ambiguously, to the states of the underlying automaton. More formally, an input string, $Z^t$, of $t+1$ symbols (the sensor network observations) that is presented to a nondeterministic finite automaton, $M$, (the …

Real-Time Attitude Determination Of A Nanosatellite Using Gps Signal-To-Noise Ratio Observations, Shaun Stewart, Greg Holt Aug 2005

Real-Time Attitude Determination Of A Nanosatellite Using Gps Signal-To-Noise Ratio Observations, Shaun Stewart, Greg Holt

Small Satellite Conference

In support of the FASTRAC nanosatellite mission, a COTS, single antenna GPS receiver has been augmented for use in space as a multi-purpose navigation sensor. In addition to providing measurements of position and velocity, the Mitel Orion GPS receiver has been coupled with a three-axis magnetometer to provide robust attitude determination for the FASTRAC nanosatellite pair. An algorithm is presented for attitude determination of small spacecraft using single antenna GPS signal-to-noise ratio observations coupled with a magnetometer. Real-time accuracies of 5-7 degrees RMS are demonstrated in simulation. In addition, a benchmark testing procedure for evaluating the on-orbit performance of the …
