Making Sense Of Nanocrystal Lattice Fringes, Phil Fraundorf, Wentao Qin, Peter Moeck, Eric Mandell Dec 2005

Making Sense Of Nanocrystal Lattice Fringes, Phil Fraundorf, Wentao Qin, Peter Moeck, Eric Mandell

Physics Faculty Works

The orientation dependence of thin-crystal lattice fringes can be gracefully quantified using fringe-visibility maps, a direct-space analog of Kikuchi maps [Nishikawa and Kikuchi, Nature (London) 121, 1019 (1928)]. As in navigation of reciprocal space with the aid of Kikuchi lines, fringe-visibility maps facilitate acquisition of crystallographic information from lattice images. In particular, these maps can help researchers to determine the three-dimensional lattice of individual nanocrystals, to “fringe-fingerprint” collections of randomly oriented particles, and to measure local specimen thickness with only a modest tilt. Since the number of fringes in an image increases with maximum spatial-frequency squared, these strategies (with help …

Iso Observations Of The Interacting Galaxy Markarian 297 - With The Powerful Supernova Remnant 1982aa, Niall Smith, Et. Al.

Blackrock Castle Observatory Publications

Markarian (Mkn) 297 is a complex system comprised of two interacting galaxies that has been modelled with a variety of scenarios. Observations of this system were made with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) using the ISOCAM, ISOPHOT and LWS instruments. ISOCAM maps at 6.7 µm, 7.7 µm, 12 µm and 14.3 µm are presented which, together with PHT-S spectrometry of the central interacting region, probe the dust obscured star formation and the properties of the organic dust. The ISOCAM observations reveal that the strongest emission in the four bands is at a location completely unremarkable at visible and near-IR (e.g. …

Dynamical Control Of Qubit Coherence: Random Versus Deterministic Schemes, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola Dec 2005

Dynamical Control Of Qubit Coherence: Random Versus Deterministic Schemes, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

We reexamine the problem of switching off unwanted phase evolution and decoherence in a single two-state quantum system in the light of recent results on random dynamical decoupling methods [L. Viola and E. Knill, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 060502 (2005)]. A systematic comparison with standard cyclic decoupling is effected for a variety of dynamical regimes, including the case of both semiclassical and fully quantum decoherence models. In particular, exact analytical expressions are derived for randomized control of decoherence from a bosonic environment. We investigate quantitatively control protocols based on purely deterministic, purely random, as well as hybrid design, and …

Spectral Analysis Of Ground Penetrating Radar Response To Thin Sedimentary Layers, Swagata Guha, Sarah E. Kruse, E. E. Wright, U. E. Kruse

Geology Faculty Publications

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems utilized in studies of sedimentary deposits generate wavelengths (tens of centimeters) that are commonly much longer than the thickness of bedding (often millimeters to centimeters) within the target strata. Where this is the case, radar profiles represent interference patterns. Simple models of radar response to sequences of thin beds such as those found in coastal deposits show potentially detectable spectral shifts toward higher frequencies in radar returns. Spectral analysis of radar data over barrier beach deposits at Waites Island, South Carolina, shows that returns from packages with heavy mineral laminations are shifted toward higher frequencies …

Autologous Stem Cell Transplant: Factors Predicting The Yield Of Cd34+ Cells, Elizabeth Anne Lawson Dec 2005

Autologous Stem Cell Transplant: Factors Predicting The Yield Of Cd34+ Cells, Elizabeth Anne Lawson

Theses and Dissertations

Stem cell transplant is often considered the last hope for the survival for many cancer patients. The CD34+ cell content of a collection of stem cells has appeared as the most reliable indicator of the quantity of desired cells in a peripheral blood stem cell harvest and is used as a surrogate measure of the sample quality. Factors predicting the yield of CD34+ cells in a collection are not yet fully understood. Throughout the literature, there has been conflicting evidence with regards to age, gender, disease status, and prior radiation. In addition to the factors that have already been explored, …

Who Should Recover What In A Securities Fraud Class Action?, Richard A. Booth Marbury Research Professor Of Law Dec 2005

Who Should Recover What In A Securities Fraud Class Action?, Richard A. Booth Marbury Research Professor Of Law

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, I argue that securities fraud class actions (SFCAs) should not be treated as class actions but rather should be treated as derivative actions. In addition, I argue that such actions should be dismissed unless it appears that insiders (including the company itself) have enjoyed gains from trading during the fraud period. Both of these conclusions are based on the fundamental argument that (1) securities law seeks to protect the interests of reasonable investors, (2) reasonable investors diversify, and (3) diversified investors are effectively protected against the supposed financial harms of securities fraud by virtue of being diversified, …

A State-Supported, Merit-Based Scholarship Program That Works, Robert Ackerman, Martha Young, Rodney Young Dec 2005

A State-Supported, Merit-Based Scholarship Program That Works, Robert Ackerman, Martha Young, Rodney Young

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The Millennium Scholarship Program, which provides merit-based scholarships for Nevada's students, is designed to increase college participation, college persistence, and the number of in-state students enrolling in state institutions of higher education (IHEs). Data gathered over the past five years reflect that Nevada's Millennium Scholarship Program has successfully met its goals. Further, it has improved student quality in IHEs, as is evident by a lower percentage of students taking college remedial courses. A major focus of this study is to demonstrate how Nevada's merit-based scholarship program may serve as a model for other states attempting to improve college participation.

Openws-Transaction: Enabling Reliable Web Service Transactions, Ivan Vasquez, John A. Miller, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

OpenWS-Transaction is an open source middleware that enables Web services to participate in a distributed transaction as prescribed by the WS-Coordination and WS-Transaction set of specifications. Central to the framework are the Coordinator and Participant entities, which can be integrated into existing services by introducing minimal changes to application code. OpenWS-Transaction allows transaction members to recover their original state in case of operational failure by leveraging techniques in logical logging and recovery at the application level. Depending on transaction style, system recovery may involve restoring key application variables and replaying uncommitted database activity. Transactions are assumed to be defined in …

Monthly Variability In Florida Bay Benthic Foraminifera Community Structure, C. Featherstone, Patricia Blackwelder Dec 2005

Monthly Variability In Florida Bay Benthic Foraminifera Community Structure, C. Featherstone, Patricia Blackwelder

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Florida Bay is a shallow subtropical estuary, which experiences highly variable environmental fluctuations due to natural forces (hurricanes, climatic variations and sea level rise) and anthropogenic influences (agricultural activity, water management and urbanization). Study of short time-scale variability in benthic community population structure and synchronous environmental change is essential to understanding forcing relationships between environment and its effects on population. Benthic foraminifera assemblage variability is an excellent indicator of environmental change in estuarine and coastal areas because populations may respond relatively quickly on spatial and temporal scales (Alve, 1995). Temporal resolution is enhanced because foraminifera may reproduce as often as …

Gradient Directed Regularization For Sparse Gaussian Concentration Graphs, With Applications To Inference Of Genetic Networks, Hongzhe Li, Jiang Gui Dec 2005

Gradient Directed Regularization For Sparse Gaussian Concentration Graphs, With Applications To Inference Of Genetic Networks, Hongzhe Li, Jiang Gui

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Large-scale microarray gene expression data provide the possibility of constructing genetic networks or biological pathways. Gaussian graphical models have been suggested to provide an effective method for constructing such genetic networks. However, most of the available methods for constructing Gaussian graphs do not account for the sparsity of the networks and are computationally more demanding or infeasible, especially in the settings of high-dimension and low sample size. We introduce a threshold gradient descent regularization procedure for estimating the sparse precision matrix in the setting of Gaussian graphical models and demonstrate its application to identifying genetic networks. Such a procedure is …

Obesity, Self-Complexity, And Compartmentalization: On The Implications Of Obesity For Self-Concept Organization, Bruce E. Blaine, C. E. Johnson Dec 2005

Obesity, Self-Complexity, And Compartmentalization: On The Implications Of Obesity For Self-Concept Organization, Bruce E. Blaine, C. E. Johnson

Statistics Faculty/Staff Publications

The relationship between obesity and structural aspects of the self-concept was examined in adult women. Participants were 119 adult women [age range: 18-73, M=26.9; body mass index (BMI) range: 16.2-54.7, M=27.3] who completed measures of self-esteem, self-complexity, and the spontaneous self-concept. BMI was associated with less complex and more compartmentalized self-knowledge and more frequent mention of weight-stereotypic traits as self-descriptive. The findings are discussed in the context of research on obesity- related stigma.

Five Years At The Magazine, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

What do the editors of MAA journals do? What is so different about editing expository mathematics? After my five years as editor of Mathematics Magazine, I have strong opinions about these matters. The goal of most mathematics journals is to print the very latest results from the forefront of research. The goal of Mathematics Magazine is to remind us all why we loved mathematics in the first place, with stimulating articles and notes accessible to advanced undergraduates.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Aromatase, the enzyme responsible for estrogen biosynthesis, is a particularly attractive target in the treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer. The synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of 2-(4′-pyridylmethyl)thio, 7-alkyl- or aryl-substituted isoflavones as potential aromatase inhibitors are described. The isoflavone derivatives demonstrate IC50 values from 79 to 553 nM and compete with the endogenous substrate, androstenedione. Data supporting the ability of these analogs to suppress aromatase enzyme activity in the SK-BR-3 breast cancer cell line are also presented.
