Model Checking For Roc Regression Analysis, Tianxi Cai, Yingye Zheng Dec 2005

Model Checking For Roc Regression Analysis, Tianxi Cai, Yingye Zheng

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve is a prominent tool for characterizing the accuracy of continuous diagnostic test. To account for factors that might invluence the test accuracy, various ROC regression methods have been proposed. However, as in any regression analysis, when the assumed models do not fit the data well, these methods may render invalid and misleading results. To date practical model checking techniques suitable for validating existing ROC regression models are not yet available. In this paper, we develop cumulative residual based procedures to graphically and numerically assess the goodness-of-fit for some commonly used ROC regression models, and …

Improving Feed Efficiency Through Genetics, Mark F. Allan Dec 2005

Improving Feed Efficiency Through Genetics, Mark F. Allan

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Feed efficiency is not a new topic to the beef industry. Historically this topic has been revisited by the industry every 10 to 15 years with little benefit to the producer. The lack of progress in understanding the genetics of feed efficiency stems from the difficulty in trying to accurately measure individual intakes, coupled with extreme costs and a long generation interval. Feed efficiency is difficult to define and needs to be evaluated in the producing female, as well as the growing/finishing animal. Heritability of feed efficiency has been estimated to be moderate, with values ranging from .28-.44. These values …

Fluid And Kinetic Structure Of Magnetic Merging In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, W. H. Matthaeus, C. D. Cothran, Matthew Joseph Landreman , '03, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Measurement of the in-plane Lorentz force and the out-of-plane magnetic field associated with the Hall electric field near the reconnection zone in the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) confirms expectations, based on simulation, theory and spacecraft data, that the quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field is a signature of collisionless effects in magnetic reconnection with a weak guide field.

On Pancyclic Representable Matroids, Brian Beavers, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Bondy proved that an n-vertex simple Hamiltonian graph with at least n2/4 edges has cycles of every length unless it is isomorphic to Kn/2,n/2. This paper considers finding circuits of every size in GF(q)-representable matroids with large numbers of elements. A consequence of the main result is that a rank-r simple binary matroid with at least 2r-1 elements either has circuits of all sizes or is isomorphic to AG(r-1,2). © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Multiple Channel Laser Beam Combination And Phasing Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Optical Fibers, Brent W. Grime Dec 2005

Multiple Channel Laser Beam Combination And Phasing Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Optical Fibers, Brent W. Grime

Theses and Dissertations

Brightness scaling lasers using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers is explored. A multiple-channel amplifier approach is used to increase the total power of a laser system while avoiding a significant burden on a single channel. The work explores two approaches utilizing both SBS beam cleanup and SBS piston error conjugation. A unique beam combiner that takes advantage of the SBS beam cleanup properties of a long, gradient-index multimode fiber was designed and tested. The beam combiner was developed to combine multiple-channel laser beams simultaneously with high input and output coupling efficiency. The design for the SBS beam combiner …

The Relationship Between Frq-Protein Stability And Temperature Compensation In The Neurospora Circadian Clock, Peter Ruoff, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap Dec 2005

The Relationship Between Frq-Protein Stability And Temperature Compensation In The Neurospora Circadian Clock, Peter Ruoff, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap

Dartmouth Scholarship

Temperature compensation is an important property of all biological clocks. In Neurospora crassa, negative-feedback regulation on the frequency (frq) gene's transcription by the FRQ protein plays a central role in the organism's circadian pacemaker. Earlier model calculations predicted that the stability of FRQ should determine the period length of Neurospora's circadian rhythm as well as the rhythm's temperature compensation. Here, we report experimental FRQ protein stabilities in frq mutants at 20 degrees C and 25 degrees C, and estimates of overall activation energies for mutant FRQ protein degradation. The results are consistent with earlier model predictions, i.e., temperature compensation of …

Preliminary Survey Of Rattlesnake Brook

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Rattlesnake Brook is located in Assonet, MA, passing under Rte 24 near exit #9 and under South Main Street. The stream was accessed at three sites: NSTAR (just upstream from the South Main St. culvert), Rapoza (downstream at 114 South Main St.) and Narrows Road (just upstream from the Narrows Rd culvert prior to the stream’s confluence with the Assonet River). One major change in land use is the addition of the Stop & Shop distribution center on South Main St. behind the Rapoza site.

Initial data for temperature and DO indicate that dissolved oxygen is high at the first …

A Water Quality Study Of Germany Brook, A Tributary Of The Neponset River Dec 2005

A Water Quality Study Of Germany Brook, A Tributary Of The Neponset River

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Germany Brook is a first-order stream that originates in Westwood and travels two miles emptying into Ellis Pond in Norwood. Earlier sampling conducted by volunteers affiliated with the Neponset River Watershed Association on the lower reaches of the stream had indicated marginal water quality characterized by high nutrient and bacterial levels. In order to assess the potential impact of surrounding land uses on water quality in the stream, the benthic macroinvertebrate community was sampled at two stations during October, 2005.

It was hypothesized that the upstream station should have better water quality than its downstream counterpart as the upper reaches …

Comparative Study Of Leonard Washburn Brook And Poquoy Brook

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Leonard Washburn Brook is a tributary of Poquoy Brook. It is located in Lakeville, MA and was accessed on Cross Street. We considered this our pristine river environment. Poquoy Brook, also of Lakeville, MA was accessed on Taunton Street. We considered this our river with many land uses as it passes through both a cranberry bog and a golf course.

Initial data for temperature and DO indicate that dissolved oxygen is higher at the Leonard Washburn than Poquoy Brook. Poquoy follows a normal diurnal curve while Leonard Washburn fluctuates with temperature due to lack of vegetation in the water column. …

On The Use Of Non-Euclidean Isotropy In Geostatistics, Frank C. Curriero Dec 2005

On The Use Of Non-Euclidean Isotropy In Geostatistics, Frank C. Curriero

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

This paper investigates the use of non-Euclidean distances to characterize isotropic spatial dependence for geostatistical related applications. A simple example is provided to demonstrate there are no guarantees that existing covariogram and variogram functions remain valid (i.e.\ positive definite or conditionally negative definite) when used with a non-Euclidean distance measure. Furthermore, satisfying the conditions of a metric is not sufficient to ensure the distance measure can be used with existing functions. Current literature is not clear on these topics. There are certain distance measures that when used with existing covariogram and variogram functions remain valid, an issue that is explored. …
