Definition, Analysis, And An Approach For Discrete-Event Simulation Model Interoperability, Tai-Chi Wu
Definition, Analysis, And An Approach For Discrete-Event Simulation Model Interoperability, Tai-Chi Wu
Theses and Dissertations
Even though simulation technology provides great benefits to industry, it is largely underutilized. One of the biggest barriers to utilizing simulation is the lack of interoperability between simulation models. This is especially true when simulation models that need to interact with each other span an enterprise or supply chain. These models are likely to be distributed and developed in disparate simulation application software. In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of the systems they represent, the models must interoperate. However, currently this interoperability is nearly impossible. The interaction of models also refers to the understanding of them among stakeholders in …
Mechanical And Physical Properties Of Preservative-Treated Strandboard, John Warren Kirkpatrick
Mechanical And Physical Properties Of Preservative-Treated Strandboard, John Warren Kirkpatrick
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to quantify properties of strandboard panels manufactured with various preservatives at loading levels effective against native termites. Panels were manufactured using nine different formulations. The method of preservative addition was also examined for some preservative formulations, increasing the total number of preservative treatments to twelve. Panels were manufactured with one target retention for each preservative treatment. An effective preservative loading relative to termites was established by previous studies or referencing current standards. Mechanical testing performed included static bending and internal bond. Physical testing included water absorption, thickness swell, and linear expansion. Few treatments met …

Trust Broker: A Defense Against Identity Theft From Online Transactions, Michael George Edvalson
Trust Broker: A Defense Against Identity Theft From Online Transactions, Michael George Edvalson
Theses and Dissertations
The proliferation of online services over the years has encouraged more and more people to participate in Internet activities. Many web sites request personal and sensitive information needed to deliver the desired service. Unfortunately, it is difficult to distinguish the sites that can be trusted to protect such information from those that cannot. Many attempts to make the Internet easier to use introduce new security and privacy problems. On the other hand, most attempts at creating a safe online environment produce systems that are cryptic and hard to use. The TrustBroker system is based on a specialized online repository that …

Glyoxalase 2 is a β-lactamase fold-containing enzyme that appears to be involved with cellular chemical detoxification. Although the cytoplasmic isozyme has been characterized from several organisms, essentially nothing is known about the mitochondrial proteins. As a first step in understanding the structure and function of mitochondrial glyoxalase 2 enzymes, a mitochondrial isozyme (GLX2-5) from Arabidopsis thaliana was cloned, overexpressed, purified, and characterized using metal analyses, EPR and 1H NMR spectroscopies, and x-ray crystallography. The recombinant enzyme was shown to bind 1.04 ± 0.15 eq of iron and 1.31 ± 0.05 eq of Zn(II) and to exhibit kcat and …

We previously reconstituted a minimal DNA replicase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa consisting of α and ϵ (polymerase and editing nuclease), β (processivity factor), and the essential τ, δ, and δ′ components of the clamp loader complex (Jarvis, T., Beaudry, A., Bullard, J., Janjic, N., and McHenry, C. (2005) J. Biol. Chem. 280, 7890-7900). In Escherichia coli DNA polymerase III holoenzyme, χ and Ψ are tightly associated clamp loader accessory subunits. The addition of E. coli χΨ to the minimal P. aeruginosa replicase stimulated its activity, suggesting the existence of χ and Ψ counterparts in P. aeruginosa. The P. aeruginosa χ …

New Graph Model For Channel Assignment In Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, S. C. Huang, X. Huang, Weili Wu
New Graph Model For Channel Assignment In Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, S. C. Huang, X. Huang, Weili Wu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The channel assignment problem in ad hoc wireless networks is investigated. The problem is to assign channels to hosts in such a way that interference among hosts is eliminated and the total number of channels is minimised. Interference is caused by direct collisions from hosts that can hear each other or indirect collisions from hosts that cannot hear each other, but simultaneously transmit to the same destination. A new class of disk graphs (FDD: interFerence Double Disk graphs) is proposed that include both kinds of interference edges. Channel assignment in wireless networks is a vertex colouring problem in FDD graphs. …

The Effects Of Fluency Training On Performance, Maintenance, And Generalization Of Parenting Skills, Gertie Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The effects of fluency training on performance, maintenance, and generalization of parent training skills were examined within the context of a classroom and home setting. Three foster parents attended a 24-hour Parenting Tools for Positive Behavior Change (PBC) course. Participants completed timed fluency drills using flash cards to increase learning and performance of PBC tools. A non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to assess participant performance on flash card drills and PBC tools during in-class, pre-test, and post-test role plays, and in novel situations with children in the home before, during and after the course. Results showed that …

Mineral aerosol deposition is the dominant source of iron to the open ocean. Soil iron is typically insoluble and understanding the atmospheric processes that convert insoluble iron to the more soluble forms observed over the oceans is crucial. In this paper, we model several proposed processes for the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II), and compare with cruise observations. The comparisons show that the model results in similar averaged magnitudes of iron solubility as measured during 8 cruises in 2001–2003. Comparisons show that results of cases including cloud, SO2 and hematite processing are better than the other approaches used using …

Intrinsic Conformational Preferences Of Substituted Cyclohexanes And Tetrahydropyrans Evaluated At The Ccsd(T) Complete Basis Set Limit: Implications For The Anomeric Effect, Abby Jones Weldon, Trisha L. Vickrey, Gregory S. Tschumper
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
A series of MP2 and CCSD(T) computations have been carried out with correlation consistent basis sets as large as aug-cc-pV5Z to determine the intrinsic equatorial-axial conformational preference of CH 3-, F-, OCH 3-, and OH-substituted cyclohexane and tetrahydropyran rings. The high-accuracy relative electronic energies reported here shed new light on the intrinsic energetics of these cyclic prototypes for the anomeric effect. At the CCSD(T) complete basis set (CBS) limit, the energy of the equatorial conformation relative to the axial position (ΔE CCSD(T)CBC) is -0.75, -0.20, -0.21, and -0.56 kcal mol -1 in methyl-, fluoro-, methoxy-, and hydroxy cyclohexane, respectively, while …

In the sol gel production of high surface area catalyst, the template, a surfactant, is
the key component of the process. A template too soluble in the supercritical dryingextraction
process can yield a catalyst with a lower surface area. A template completely
insoluble in the supercritical drying-extraction process can lead to a longer calcinations
step and lower catalyst surface area. Template recovery also enhances the economic
feasibility of plant scale production of high surface area catalyst. For these reasons
knowing surfactant solubility in supercritical media is important.
The solubility of surfactants tert-octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol (commercially
available and hereafter referred to as Triton …

Quantifying Reasonable Doubt: A Proposed Solution To An Equal Protection Problem, Harry D. Saunders
Quantifying Reasonable Doubt: A Proposed Solution To An Equal Protection Problem, Harry D. Saunders
ExpressO
In this article we present the case that the Reasonable Doubt standard is in urgent need of repair. Our research reveals that a previously-recognized phenomenon arising from vagueness of the standard is more consequential than thus far realized and creates a serious equal protection problem. We show that the only legally feasible solution to this problem is to quantify the definition of the standard. While others have examined quantified standards, we make a direct case for it and overcome previous objections to it by offering a way to make it practical and workable.
The solution we envision will require new …

Empirical Likelihood Inference For The Area Under The Roc Curve, Gengsheng Qin, Xiao-Hua Zhou
Empirical Likelihood Inference For The Area Under The Roc Curve, Gengsheng Qin, Xiao-Hua Zhou
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
For a continuous-scale diagnostic test, the most commonly used summary index of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is the area under the curve (AUC) that measures the accuracy of the diagnostic test. In this paper we propose an empirical likelihood approach for the inference of AUC. We first define an empirical likelihood ratio for AUC and show that its limiting distribution is a scaled chi-square distribution. We then obtain an empirical likelihood based confidence interval for AUC using the scaled chi-square distribution. This empirical likelihood inference for AUC can be extended to stratified samples and the resulting limiting distribution …
Interval Estimation For The Ratio And Difference Of Two Lognormal Means, Yea-Hung Chen, Xiao-Hua Zhou
Interval Estimation For The Ratio And Difference Of Two Lognormal Means, Yea-Hung Chen, Xiao-Hua Zhou
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Health research often gives rise to data that follow lognormal distributions. In two sample situations, researchers are likely to be interested in estimating the difference or ratio of the population means. Several methods have been proposed for providing confidence intervals for these parameters. However, it is not clear which techniques are most appropriate, or how their performance might vary. Additionally, methods for the difference of means have not been adequately explored. We discuss in the present article five methods of analysis. These include two methods based on the log-likelihood ratio statistic and a generalized pivotal approach. Additionally, we provide and …

Inferences In Censored Cost Regression Models With Empirical Likelihood, Xiao-Hua Zhou, Gengsheng Qin, Huazhen Lin, Gang Li
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In many studies of health economics, we are interested in the expected total cost over a certain period for a patient with given characteristics. Problems can arise if cost estimation models do not account for distributional aspects of costs. Two such problems are 1) the skewed nature of the data and 2) censored observations. In this paper we propose an empirical likelihood (EL) method for constructing a confidence region for the vector of regression parameters and a confidence interval for the expected total cost of a patient with the given covariates. We show that this new method has good theoretical …

Confidence Intervals For Predictive Values Using Data From A Case Control Study, Nathaniel David Mercaldo, Xiao-Hua Zhou, Kit F. Lau
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The accuracy of a binary-scale diagnostic test can be represented by sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp) and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV). Although Se and Sp measure the intrinsic accuracy of a diagnostic test that does not depend on the prevalence rate, they do not provide information on the diagnostic accuracy of a particular patient. To obtain this information we need to use PPV and NPV. Since PPV and NPV are functions of both the intrinsic accuracy and the prevalence of the disease, constructing confidence intervals for PPV and NPV for a particular patient in a population with …

The Anchor, Volume 119.11: December 7, 2005, Hope College
The Anchor: 2005
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
