Bringing Her Fist Down On That Wholeness: Rewriting Gendered Narratives In Zoeìˆ Wicomb's Fiction, Rachel Heicher Jan 2005

Bringing Her Fist Down On That Wholeness: Rewriting Gendered Narratives In Zoeìˆ Wicomb's Fiction, Rachel Heicher

Masters Theses

This thesis situates South African writer Zoë Wicomb's fictional work within a critical context of current feminist theory, exploring Wicomb's response to a central problem for poststructuralist feminism-how can we deconstruct femininity while simultaneously conserving a platform for feminist political activism; how can we assert. on the one hand, that there are no "women", and then, on the other, continue to campaign on behalf of "women's" rights? Wicomb's two novels to date, You Can't Get Lost in Cape Town (1987) and David's Story (2000) serve as test studies for a model of gender that fluctuates and purposefully and constructively embodies …

Cultural And Individual Influences On Foreign Policy, Emine Sunduz Demir Jan 2005

Cultural And Individual Influences On Foreign Policy, Emine Sunduz Demir

Masters Theses

The principle aim of this thesis is to examine how strategic culture affects foreign policy decision-making, as contrasted to the particular decree of influence the individuals have on the foreign policy process in the concept of an immediate extended deterrence. This thesis is based on three case studies that are tested separately using both Cha's notion of strategic culture and Allison's Bureaucratic Politics Model in order to find which model (if any) best explains foreign policy decision making. Cases are: The SemiVietnamese War in 1979 and Deng Xiaoping, the Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996 and Jiang Zemin, and the Kosovo …

Ethnicity And Religion: An Inquiry Into The Origin And Nature Of Conflicts In Nigeria, Ugochukwu Chrys. Nwabueze Jan 2005

Ethnicity And Religion: An Inquiry Into The Origin And Nature Of Conflicts In Nigeria, Ugochukwu Chrys. Nwabueze

Masters Theses

The policy goal of a Pax Nigeriana in the African continent is hardly realizable without a focused confrontation by Nigeria of its own security deficits. A security and politically deficient Nigeria will have nothing to offer the African continent in terms of peace and political stability if it cannot by example overcome its own accidental and structural flaws.

With this in mind, the work sets out to address the origin, nature and resolution of conflict in Nigeria. Before adequate resolution therapy could be recommended for violent conflicts in Nigeria, any intending researcher must of necessity address the origin and nature …

Idioms As Cultural Commonplaces: Corporeal Lessons From Hokkien Idioms, Sue Hum

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This essay uses idioms, especially Hokkien idioms, to counter the western predisposition of separating mind and body, arguing that they underscore the mind-body shift that occurs with the acquisition of academic discourses.

Disjunctive Answer Set Programming Via Satisfiability, Yuliya Lierler Jan 2005

Disjunctive Answer Set Programming Via Satisfiability, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Using SAT solvers as inference engines in answer set programming systems showed to be a promising approach in building efficient systems. Nowadays SAT based answer set programming systems successfully work with nondisjunctive programs. This paper proposes a way to use SAT solvers for finding answer sets for disjunctive logic programs. We implement two different ways of SAT solver invocation used in nondisjunctive answer set programming. The algorithms are based on the definition of completion for disjunctive programs and the extension of loop formula to the disjunctive case. We propose the necessary modifications to the algorithms known for nondisjunctive programs in …

Truth Or Consequences In Legal Scholarship?, David R. Barnhizer Jan 2005

Truth Or Consequences In Legal Scholarship?, David R. Barnhizer

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

There has been an erosion of the ideal of truth as a guiding force for what we do. This includes a dishonoring of the tradition of the truth-seeking function of scholars. For the university-based intellectual, including legal scholars, the problem with commitments to ends other than truth-seeking is that once we accept a mission distinct from the pursuit of truth and honest discourse, most of the remaining options are suspect - including falseness, hypocrisy, self-deception, subordination of self to a collective, profit, dogmatism, devotion to tradition, and propaganda.

Although what we intend by the idea of truth - legal, scientific, …

Design Of Fuzzy Logic Based Adaptive Traffic Signal Controller, Murali Mohan Ande Jan 2005

Design Of Fuzzy Logic Based Adaptive Traffic Signal Controller, Murali Mohan Ande

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Traffic control of street intersections is one of the most critical elements in providing an efficient flow of traffic in urban networks. Conventionally, pretimed controllers are used, but they cannot respond to real time fluctuations in traffic demand. Traffic actuated signals provide an improvement over pretimed controllers, but their performance deteriorates under heavy traffic conditions. These conditions necessitate the development of a controller that responds to actual traffic demand in real time, with the objective of minimizing vehicle delays, number of stops, etc. Fuzzy logic provides the potential for development of a system that would address these needs; The objective …

Using A Discrete Choice Model To Identify Consumer Meal Preferences Within A Prix Fixe Menu, Eunha Myung Jan 2005

Using A Discrete Choice Model To Identify Consumer Meal Preferences Within A Prix Fixe Menu, Eunha Myung

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Reference price theory suggests that consumers create a point of reference for pricing based on multiple factors. A point of reference in turn influences how buyers respond to price. Several studies (e.g., Yadav & Monroe, 1993) examined reference price theory in the bundling context. These studies state that consumers form perceptions of value by comparing the bundle price and the sum of individual prices. These perceptions of value are then directly related to preference or choice; the larger a buyer's perception of value, the more likely the buyer will be to express a preference for the product; Therefore, the objective …

An Empirical Investigation Of Gaming Destination Images, Erin Kneesel Jan 2005

An Empirical Investigation Of Gaming Destination Images, Erin Kneesel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research is an investigation of the images and perceptions of four selected gaming destinations - Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Chicagoland (IL, IN), and Connecticut - in order to uncover their perceived strengths and weaknesses. The evaluation of each destination will be done through evaluating cognitive perceptions, affective perceptions, overall image, and behavioral intentions through a combination of quantitative and qualitative questions. The study was able to determine that there are significant differences between the perceptions of each of the four destinations. The strengths and weaknesses of each of the gaming markets can be identified to aid marketers in formulating …

Music As A Rhetorical Form: The Use Of Audio In "America's Most Wanted", Josette Nicole Perrone Jan 2005

Music As A Rhetorical Form: The Use Of Audio In "America's Most Wanted", Josette Nicole Perrone

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the roughly fifty years since television programming began, the medium has gone from being a mere novelty to a major cultural force. Television is pervasive and widespread---nearly every home in America has one. It is hard to deny that because of its presence in our culture that some of its messages get through. My project is centered on the extent to which those messages affect the lives of its viewers; The purpose of the project is to examine music as a rhetorical form by analyzing a ten-minute segment of "America's Most Wanted" (AMW) on the Washington D.C. sniper case …

"You've Got Mail": Email Use In Post-Dissolutional Relationships, Michelle P Mosbacher Jan 2005

"You've Got Mail": Email Use In Post-Dissolutional Relationships, Michelle P Mosbacher

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an examination of the conscious motives involved with using email communication over face-to-face communication in post-dissolutional communication between former romantic partners. This project also answered specific questions regarding the nature of post-dissolutional communication. Data collected from 173 undergraduate students revealed that the ability to plan messages within an email is a conscious motive of using email communication that is not perceived in face-to-face communication, whereas the ability to save-face and avoid topics are not. Additionally, emoticons are sparingly used in post-dissolutional email communication, yet those participants who reported to use emoticons are also concerned with saving face. …

Embodied Language Performance: Mediational Affordances Of Dramatic Activity For Second Language Learning, John Richard Haught Jan 2005

Embodied Language Performance: Mediational Affordances Of Dramatic Activity For Second Language Learning, John Richard Haught

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative study examines the unique mediational affordances a drama based approach to second language learning provides. From the perspective of Sociocultural theory, the nature of learning is greatly determined by the mediational means employed and this study revealed the importance of modeling and imitation and multiple perspective taking that arose from the recursive process of rehearsal to be instrumental in the students' understanding and growing mastery of English. This recursion process occurs within instructional conversations which serve to level the relations of power between teacher and learner, resulting in a more authentic learning environment. In short, drama introduces alterity …

The Potential Impact Of The Medieval Climatic Anomaly On Human Populations In The Western Mojave Desert, Jill Kathleen Gardner Jan 2005

The Potential Impact Of The Medieval Climatic Anomaly On Human Populations In The Western Mojave Desert, Jill Kathleen Gardner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, a model was proposed for changing settlement and subsistence patterns in the western Mojave Desert. The model posits that environmental fluctuations over the last 4,000 years were potential causal mechanisms for culture change in this region. One of these fluctuations was the environmental episode known as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA), a series of droughts that took place between about 1,200 and 650 B.P. The intent of this study was to determine whether apparent culture changes that began about 1,200 years ago in the western Mojave Desert are associated with the MCA. To …

Design And Control Of A Smart Fin Using Piezoelectric Actuators, Surya Kiran Parimi Jan 2005

Design And Control Of A Smart Fin Using Piezoelectric Actuators, Surya Kiran Parimi

The objective of this research work is to design and implement control algorithms for smart fin of a projectile, which is currently under development in the Army Research Laboratory (ARL). The smart fin is used to maneuver small aerial vehicles by controlling the rotation angle of the fin. The fin is activated by a composite laminated plate that has two active piezoelectric layers. The prototype of the smart fin is assembled using Macro Fiber Composite (MFC actuator model M8557, Smart Material Co); Control algorithms for rotating the fin when subject to external aerodynamic forces are proposed. These controllers use a …

Flesh And Stone: A Wanderer's Mosaic, Tamaria L Anderson Jan 2005

Flesh And Stone: A Wanderer's Mosaic, Tamaria L Anderson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There are places in the world that never seem to leave the news, and yet for all we hear of them, we really know very little. The West Bank is one of these, its truths and realities obscured by the blinding flash of news cameras and political manipulation. It remains near the front of our consciousness in part because of its constant unrest, but also due to its role as nexus for three main world religions; This work grew out of an impulse to describe and explain the experience of living as a foreigner on the West Bank. Taking the …

Youth Culture, Clothing, And Communicative Messages, Eric Batson Jan 2005

Youth Culture, Clothing, And Communicative Messages, Eric Batson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As a nonverbal form of communication, clothing reveals much about its wearers. In addition to exposing attitudes, values, beliefs, and other personal traits, individuals can utilize clothing to disseminate deliberate, symbolic messages. This project focuses on youth subcultures and the messages associated with their strategically constructed clothing images. It addresses how they display in-group affiliation and out-group separation through the management of clothing. It discusses how individuals can increase their personal value with in-group members as they manage their apparel in appropriate and deliberate ways. This thesis also notes the multiple influences that affect the clothing choices of youth subcultures …

The Effects Of L1 Literacy And Education On Point-Gain In An Adult Esl Course, Heidi Ekstrom Elhalta Jan 2005

The Effects Of L1 Literacy And Education On Point-Gain In An Adult Esl Course, Heidi Ekstrom Elhalta

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined factors affecting learners' progress as measured by positive point gains between pre- and posttest reading proficiency scores for an intermediate/advanced adult ESL course. Background and self-assessment information, gathered through individual student interviews, was analyzed with reference to point gains to determine the influence of individual factors on students' progress. Due to limitations of the study, no correlation was found between education and L1 literacy and student's progress. However, the statistical results indicate slight positive correlations between students' point gains and their length of residence in the U.S. as well as the total number of instructional hours attended. …

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes Jan 2005

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes

Russian Language Journal

A curriculum is an attempt, wrote Stenhouse three decades ago (1975, 4), to communicate the essential principles and features of an educational proposal in such a form that it is open to critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice.

If one applies that notion of curriculum to the foreign language field in general, and to second- or foreign-language learning in U.S. colleges and universities in particular, one is immediately confronted with a dilemma: how can we speak of a foreign-language curriculum at the college level when a principled approach that is open to scrutiny and that builds on …

The Concept Of “World Language”, V. G. Kostomarov Jan 2005

The Concept Of “World Language”, V. G. Kostomarov

Russian Language Journal

Although the United Nations has declared that its working languages—English, Russian, French, Spanish, Chinese, and, more recently, Japanese and Arabic— are “world languages,” there is no strictly linguistic basis for such a claim. Indeed, many linguists reject the term, and many of those who do accept it believe that it denotes—roughly—an artificial global language. Moreover, many find in it an unpleasant hint of the pseudoscientific idea that one language can be superior to another.
