Speech And Language Professionals, Brown Paula

Presentations and other scholarship

This site was developed in an effort to assist speech-language pathologists in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. However, it is not meant to be a comprehensive treatise on assessment and intervention with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Instead, it provides a sampling of the kinds of activities that may occur.

Neotrusteeship In Afghanistan, Melanie Kawano Jan 2005

Neotrusteeship In Afghanistan, Melanie Kawano

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Afghanistan is currently under the tentative rule of an international administration, or neotrusteeship, thereby restricting its national sovereignty. However, self-determination and nonintervention have never been persistent features of Afghanistan. Foreign interventions, invasions and great power showdowns on its territory have made a truly autonomous Afghan state a shortlived phenomenon. The outcome at each stage of Afghan history has been an unstable state that seems to invite even more external involvement.

Sri Lanka, Amanda Donahoe Jan 2005

Sri Lanka, Amanda Donahoe

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Sri Lanka has been entrenched in a civil war for two decades. As in ethnic conflicts in many other post-colonial countries, the different groups of Sri Lanka give loyalty primarily to the group, rather than to the entire country. The Sinhalese majority have slowly populated the government and treated the Tamil minority as a threat to national stability, instead of as candidates for conciliation and power sharing. Consequently, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has taken up arms against the Sinhalese controlled government to fight for an independent homeland in the north and north-east parts of the country in …

Using Postmodern Feminist Legal Theory To Interrupt The Reinscription Of Sex Stereotypes Through The Institution Of Marriage, Jessica Knouse Jan 2005

Using Postmodern Feminist Legal Theory To Interrupt The Reinscription Of Sex Stereotypes Through The Institution Of Marriage, Jessica Knouse

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The institution of marriage has long been an engine of the subordination of women, the normalization of relationships and the repression of individual desires. This Article suggests that the time has come to dismantle the institution and end its deleterious impact upon society. The Article begins by defining "sex" and "sex stereotypes" and by examining, from various feminist perspectives, the influence of sex stereotypes upon individual identity creation. The Article proceeds to review the historical development of marriage, illustrating that marriage inevitably reinscribes sex stereotypes, and arguing that the institution and the stereotypes are presently so intertwined that disaggregation is …

Louis Owens, Linda Lizut Helstern Jan 2005

Louis Owens, Linda Lizut Helstern

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

“'I prefer infinitions to definitions,’” Alex Yazzie, the cross-dressing Navajo anthropologist in Louis Owens’ Bone Game, declares (46). So did Louis Owens. In his life, in his death, and above all in his writing, Louis Owens (1948-2002), novelist, essayist, literary and cultural critic, crossed boundaries and refused definitions. Born in Lompoc, California, Owens came to understand the arid landscape of the west through the lens of his early childhood in the Yazoo bottoms of Mississippi. He was a Native mixedblood who acknowledged not only his multi-tribal heritage, Choctaw on his father's side and Cherokee on his mother’s, but the …

Putting Religious Symbolism In Context: A Linguistic Critique Of The Endorsement Test, B. Jessie Hill Jan 2005

Putting Religious Symbolism In Context: A Linguistic Critique Of The Endorsement Test, B. Jessie Hill

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court's jurisprudence concerning public displays of religious symbols is notoriously unpredictable. In this Article, Professor Hill argues that the instability and apparent incoherence of the Supreme Court's religious symbolism jurisprudence is due to certain difficulties inherent in discerning the "meaning" or "message" of a religious display. In particular, she attributes the unpredictability of the jurisprudence to the fact that the meaning of the display is dependent on the "context," which is itself an unmanageable and unformalizable concept. This Article, which draws on insights from literary and linguistic theory, breaks with previous commentators' claims that the difficulties with the …

Lifting The Pall Of Orthodoxy: The Need For Hearing A Multitude Of Tongues In And Beyond The Sexual Education Curricula At Public High Schools, Carlo A. Pedrioli Jan 2005

Lifting The Pall Of Orthodoxy: The Need For Hearing A Multitude Of Tongues In And Beyond The Sexual Education Curricula At Public High Schools, Carlo A. Pedrioli

Faculty Scholarship

When public high schools promote heterosexuality at the cost of denying sexual minority youth the opportunity to learn about minority sexualities, these schools contribute to the disastrous situation in which many sexual minority high school students find themselves. This approach, which many public high schools take, is unnecessarily destructive and warrants prompt change. Instead of helping to perpetuate many of the challenges that sexual minority students face in high school, public high schools can and need to help address these challenges. To establish the case for such a position, this article begins by presenting the plight of many sexual minority …

Evaluating Efficacy Of Parent/Toddler Language Playgroups: Implementing A Researcher-Practitioner Partnership, Caitlin B. Burke Jan 2005

Evaluating Efficacy Of Parent/Toddler Language Playgroups: Implementing A Researcher-Practitioner Partnership, Caitlin B. Burke

Honors Capstones

This project developed guidelines for speech-language pathologists to use when making data-driven decisions on whether to keep a child in services or to dismiss the child from direct therapy. The purpose was to develop an action plan to guide theclinician in decision-making. Three questions were posed: 1. What should be evaluated? 2. Which tools should be used and how often? 3. How could these results be interpreted to inform clinical decision-making? To do this, a literature review was conducted and recommendations were discussed with a speech-language pathologist and a clinical researcher working at this university. Proposed guidelines focused on total …
