The Thirty-Third George Eliot Memorial Lecture, 2004 'School-Time': George Eliot And Education, Dinah Birch Jan 2005

The Thirty-Third George Eliot Memorial Lecture, 2004 'School-Time': George Eliot And Education, Dinah Birch

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

In George Eliot's first piece of published fiction, the hero - if that's the right word for the hapless Reverend Amos Barton - is no advertisement for the conventional schooling of a middle-class Englishman. Though he has managed to struggle through the university degree he needs to qualify him for a clerical life, his years as a student have not made an intellectual of Amos: 'Mr. Barton had not the gift of perfect accuracy in English orthography and syntax, which was unfortunate, as he was known not to be a Hebrew scholar, and not in the least suspected of being …

Moving Beyond Signs: The Crisis Of Language In Daniel Deronda, Ceri Hunter Jan 2005

Moving Beyond Signs: The Crisis Of Language In Daniel Deronda, Ceri Hunter

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

It is no critical initiative to point out that George Eliot's Daniel Deronda (1876) plays with the premises of realist narrative art.! Previous readings have, however, tended to engage only tangentially with the way in which the novel scrutinises the use of language? This omission of linguistic context is curious, given that Daniel Deronda is set during a decade which placed the Victorian ruling classes' confidence in the English language under strain. The 1860s teemed with words. There were more English speakers than ever before, owing to population increase and dispersal. The English language was democratised by the 1867 reform …

Gendering The Frontier In O. E. Rölvaag's Giants In The Earth, John Muthyala Jan 2005

Gendering The Frontier In O. E. Rölvaag's Giants In The Earth, John Muthyala

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Translated from the Norwegian into English, O. E. Rölvaag's Giants in the Earth narrates the saga of pioneer life on the American prairies. It is a saga that has the sanction of official ideology and the authority of a religious edict: to go on an "errand into the wilderness," explore and subdue the frontier, which was the "basic conditioning factor" of American experience, and, in so doing, cultivate a new civilization. Indeed, it is hard not to read the novel as dramatizing the power of Turner's frontier thesis because it seems to unabashedly affirm the frontier as the great American …

Roads Diverging In Yellow Woods: New Paths For Ecological And Environmental Anthropology, Sarah Hitchner Jan 2005

Roads Diverging In Yellow Woods: New Paths For Ecological And Environmental Anthropology, Sarah Hitchner

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

Anthropology is at a crossroads; perhaps it always has been. Because it is such a broad discipline, there has always been debate among anthropologists over its role inside and outside of academia. There are often tensions between the paradigms of theory and practice, modernism and postmodernism, constructionism and deconstructionism, scaling up and scaling down, and many other seeming dichotomies that really contain many shades of gray. Anthropology has been called “the most humanistic of the sciences, and the most scientific of the humanities.” We anthropologists should take this phrase as a compliment, and each strive to find our own niche …

Evolving Business And Social Norms And Interpretation Rules: The Need For A Dynamic Approach To Contract Disputes, Nancy Kim Jan 2005

Evolving Business And Social Norms And Interpretation Rules: The Need For A Dynamic Approach To Contract Disputes, Nancy Kim

Nebraska Law Review

This article argues that rapid societal changes require a theory of contract that is capable of evolving with them and urges adoption of a "dynamic" approach to contract disputes. It proposes that adoption of dynamic principles furthers the primary objectives of contract law and is best suited to address evolving social norms and needs. By setting as the primary objective ascertainment of the parties' intent rather than review of words on a page, a dynamic approach better captures the context and the spirit in which the contract was made. Part II briefly summarizes the most commonly cited objectives of contract …

Searching For Our Foremothers: A Philosophical Journey Through The Alternative Genres Of Women Writers, April Hall Jan 2005

Searching For Our Foremothers: A Philosophical Journey Through The Alternative Genres Of Women Writers, April Hall

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In the history of philosophy, there is a shortage, and often a total absence, of women’s voices in the philosophical canon. I take this notable lack of female philosophical contribution not as evidence that women were not ‘capable’ or ‘interested’ in philosophical inquiry, but rather that their contributions are mainly to be found in alternative genres that were more open for women to participate in. I propose that present-day philosophers who are interested in locating the philosophical activities of women would benefit from an exploration of what I am terming “alternative genres.” I shall focus in particular on personal correspondence …

Observations Of Chat Room Conversations On The Internet: Implications For Educators Addressing The Needs Of Female Adolescents, Dixie Sanger, Mitzi Ritzaman, Barbara Lacost, Keri Stofer, Amie Long, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This qualitative study explored the meanings of chat room conversations through observations of teenagers using the Internet. Adolescent girls were a focus because of their shaky sense of self. Participants in ten chat rooms included 534 individuals. Six themes, emerging from analyzing 2526 utterances [descriptive statements], included (a) communicating with abbreviations and acronyms, (b) requesting/providing personal information, (c) requesting/providing pictures, (d) requesting/accepting private chats, (e) using profanity/vulgarity or sexual comments, and (f) using figurative language or sarcasm. Implications were outlined to assist educators addressing the needs of female adolescents.

Racial Integration And Community Revitalization, Myron Orfield Jan 2005

Racial Integration And Community Revitalization, Myron Orfield

Studies

This article, published in the Vanderbilt Law Review, uses a New Jersey court case?In re Adoption of the 2003 Low Income Housing Tax Credit Qualified Allocation?to illustrate the tension between the FHA and the siting preferences in the LIHTC statute. It highlights a deep legal and philosophical contradiction in the United States between civil rights guarantees?particularly the duty to affirmatively further fair housing?and state and federal low-income housing policy.

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries Jan 2005

Choosing Your Baseline Carefully: Integrating Historical And Political Ecology In The Evaluation Of Environmental Intervention Projects, Danny De Vries

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Environmental intervention projects aim to re-engineer the cultural landscape. Entering at a particular moment in time, such projects commonly produce a "baseline" analysis. This analysis captures elements in the environment that are later compared to measured changes the project claims to produce. Illustrated through a case study of a Tanzanian community conservation non-governmental organization, the argument made in this paper is that uncritical use of such baselines in measuring and evaluating environmental intervention projects is a practice that tends to impose ahistorical understandings of human-environmental relationships that have deep historical roots. The paper illustrates how an attempt to draw a …

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Through small-scale sampling of relevant specialized texts to craft hands-on inferential vocabulary tasks, both students and teachers can benefit from corpus linguistic information. By discovering ways to collect and access real data, second-language teachers can create topic-specific corpora and use software to sort and highlight the data to create more rich and revealing classroom materials for improving vocabulary learning. This student-centered, data-driven learning can be easily adapted for different levels of reading students. Free or purchased software, as well as features of existing programs, can be put to use to access online texts

Report To Congress From Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales On U.S. Government Efforts To Combat Trafficking In Persons In Fiscal Year 2004, U. S. Department Of Justice

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Trafficking in persons is a regrettably widespread form of modern-day slavery. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 human beings are trafficked across international borders each year. Furthermore, between 14,500 and 17,500 victims are trafficked into the United States each year. In response, the United States has led the world in the fight against this terrible crime.

Nf95-641 Car — A Strategy For Learning, Janet S. Hanna, Kayla M. Hinrichs, Carla J. Mahar, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Language and literacy development starts at the very beginning of a child's life and is one of the main developmental events of early childhood. This process if facilitated by early adult-child interactions in which the adult guides and supports the child's learning by building on what the child already knows. Following the child's lead, a key strategy presented in Language Is the Key is one of the defining aspects of developmentally appropriate practice. It has been shown to successfuly facilitate early language development for children with and without disabilities.
