Branch One: A Treehouse Retreat, Linn Bjornrud Jan 2005

Branch One: A Treehouse Retreat, Linn Bjornrud

Architecture Theses

The tree house is a concept that puts excitement into the eyes and hearts of children everywhere. What is unique is that the same affect is had on many adults when asked about it. This is due to the fact that nearly every child either experiences or entertains the idea of what fun could be had with a tree house. The need to enjoy life is one that cannot be lost in the responsibilities and routines of everyday living. Instead we must celebrate the simple and honest pleasures that exist around us. The goal of this retreat is to provide …

Autonomous Vehicle Technologies For Small Fixed-Wing Uavs, Randal Beard, Derek Kingston, Morgan Quigley, Deryl Snyder, Reed Christiansen, Walt Johnson, Timothy Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich Jan 2005

Autonomous Vehicle Technologies For Small Fixed-Wing Uavs, Randal Beard, Derek Kingston, Morgan Quigley, Deryl Snyder, Reed Christiansen, Walt Johnson, Timothy Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich

Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to describe the design and implementation of a small semi-autonomous fixed-wing unmanned air vehicle. In particular we describe the hardware and software architectures used in the design. We also describe a low weight, low cost autopilot developed at Brigham Young University and the algorithms associated with the autopilot. Novel PDA and voice interfaces to the UAV are described. In addition, we overview our approach to real-time path planning, trajectory generation, and trajectory tracking. The paper is augmented with movie files that demonstrate the functionality of the UAV and its control software.

Superior Shores Lakehomes: Lake Superior's Hidden Destination, Melissa Schlukebier Jan 2005

Superior Shores Lakehomes: Lake Superior's Hidden Destination, Melissa Schlukebier

Landscape Architecture Theses

The north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota is a major tourist destination for travelers from around the country and worldwide. The past 50 years has seen rapid development of both residential and commercial lots along the lake shore. Much of this development has had an adverse affect on the ecology of the shoreline. Superior Shores, a resort and lake home rental property near Two Harbors is an example of housing and business on the lake which I have interest in. This 46 acre property includes a lodge, several condo units, restaurants, pools, small shops and conference center. The property …

Coordination Variables, Coordination Functions, And Cooperative Timing Missions, Randal Beard, Timothy W. Mclain Jan 2005

Coordination Variables, Coordination Functions, And Cooperative Timing Missions, Randal Beard, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: AFOSR, DARPA. This paper presents a solution strategy for achieving cooperative timing among teams of vehicles. Based on the notion of coordination variables and coordination functions, the strategy facilitates cooperative timing by requiring acceptably low levels of communication and computation. The application of the coordination variable/function approach to trajectory planning problems for teams of unmanned air vehicles with timing constraints is described. Three types of timing constraints are considered: simultaneous arrival, tight sequencing, and loose sequencing. Simulation results demonstrating the viability of the approach are presented.

Speech Interactions With Linguistic, Cognitive, And Visuomotor Tasks, Christopher Dromey, Emily Bates Jan 2005

Speech Interactions With Linguistic, Cognitive, And Visuomotor Tasks, Christopher Dromey, Emily Bates

Faculty Publications

Lip movements were examined across several repetitive speaking conditions (speech alone and speaking concurrently with a linguistic, cognitive, or visuomotor challenge task) in 20 young adults. Performance in these nonspeech activities was also compared between isolated tasks and concurrent speech conditions. Linguistic challenges resulted in increased spatiotemporal variability of lip displacement across repetitions. Motor challenges led to more rapid speech with smaller lip displacement. These qualitatively different changes suggest that different aspects of attention are required for linguistic versus manual visuomotor activity. Vocal intensity increased for all concurrent task conditions compared with speech alone, suggesting increased effort compared to the …

Stock Market Liberalization And Operating Performance At The Firm Level, Todd Mitton Jan 2005

Stock Market Liberalization And Operating Performance At The Firm Level, Todd Mitton

Faculty Publications

I use firm-specific measures of openness to foreign investors to study the impact of stock market liberalization on firm-level operating performance. In a sample of over 1,100 firms from 28 countries, firms with stocks that are open to foreign investors experience higher growth, greater investment, greater profitability, greater efficiency, and lower leverage. Strategies to address potential endogeneity suggest that the observed relationship, at least in part, reflects a causal effect of openness on operating performance.

Leadership, Collective Personality, And Performance, David A. Hofmann, Lisa Jones Christensen Jan 2005

Leadership, Collective Personality, And Performance, David A. Hofmann, Lisa Jones Christensen

Faculty Publications

By viewing behavior regularities at the individual and collective level as functionally isomorphic, a referent-shift compositional model for the Big 5 personality dimensions is developed. On the basis of this compositional model, a common measure of Big 5 personality at the individual level is applied to the collective as a whole. Within this framework, it is also hypothesized that leadership (i.e., transformational, transactional, and passive) would predict collective personality and that collective personality would be significantly related to collective performance. The results supported these hypotheses using a sample of franchised units. On the basis of recent research at the individual …

Variation In Isoprene Emission From Quercus Rubra: Sources, Causes, And Consequences For Estimating Fluxes, Jennifer L. Funk, Clive G. Jones, Dennis W. Gray, Heather L. Throop, Laura A. Hyatt, Manuel T. Lerdau Jan 2005

Variation In Isoprene Emission From Quercus Rubra: Sources, Causes, And Consequences For Estimating Fluxes, Jennifer L. Funk, Clive G. Jones, Dennis W. Gray, Heather L. Throop, Laura A. Hyatt, Manuel T. Lerdau

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Isoprene is the dominant volatile organic compound produced in many forest systems. Uncertainty in estimates of leaf level isoprene emission rate stems from an insufficient understanding of the patterns and processes controlling isoprene emission capacity in plant leaves. Previous studies suggest that variation in isoprene emission capacity is substantial; however, it is not known at what scale emission capacity is the most variable. Identifying the sources of variation in emission capacity has implications for conducting measurements and for model development, which will ultimately improve emission estimates and models of tropospheric chemistry. In addition, understanding the sources of variation will help …

Defining (Multiple) Selves: Stories From The Field, Chang Yau Hoon Jan 2005

Defining (Multiple) Selves: Stories From The Field, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The ‘Self’ in late-modernity is never singular but multiplies across different discourses, practices and positions. It is constructed through difference. It is only through a relation to the ‘Other’ that the ‘Self’ can be defined. This paper endeavours to map the endless negotiations of my ‘Self’ as male Australian academic of Chinese descent, a Malaysian citizen, a Bruneian resident, and an Indonesian specialist, over a period of fieldwork in Jakarta in 2004. It discusses how I defined my multiple ‘Selves’ to different individuals and communities, how they in turn defined me, and how these constructions were always shifting. Depending on …

Life After The White House: The Public Post-Presidency And The Development Of Presidential Legacies, Lori Cox Han, Matthew J. Krov Jan 2005

Life After The White House: The Public Post-Presidency And The Development Of Presidential Legacies, Lori Cox Han, Matthew J. Krov

Political Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"This chapter considers two distinct yet related issues: First, we examine the role that continuing press coverage of a former president plays in the development of a presidential legacy; and second, we consider the impact of Clinton’s lingering presence in the news media in the first year after he left office and how that has shaped the early phase of his legacy. While the historical rankings and public approval ratings of former presidents can and do shift—sometimes dramatically—in the years after leaving office, news coverage during the first year can be important in setting a tone as to how the …

The Rose Garden Strategy Revisited: How Presidents Use Public Activities, Lori Cox Han Jan 2005

The Rose Garden Strategy Revisited: How Presidents Use Public Activities, Lori Cox Han

Political Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"The overall goal of this study was to determine how often, and in which formats, presidents choose to go public, and if differences exist in that pattern during their reelection efforts. This chapter also considers the major developments within the public presidency during the twentieth century, and how those developments contributed to the patterns in public activities that have emerged for Presidents Hoover through Clinton."

The Prerogative Of The Sovereign In Virginia: Royal Law In A Republic, William Hamilton Bryson Jan 2005

The Prerogative Of The Sovereign In Virginia: Royal Law In A Republic, William Hamilton Bryson

Law Faculty Publications

The history of the prerogative of the sovereign, the lex prerogativa, in Anglo American jurisprudence is long and complicated. It has exercised the minds of jurists and political philosophers for many centuries, and there has not been universal agreement as to its nature and scope. The purpose of this essay, as prompted by the two quotations just given, is to describe the prerogative law and trace its development from medieval England to modem Virginia.

The Environmental Responsibility Of The Regionalizing Electric Utility Industry, Joel B. Eisen Jan 2005

The Environmental Responsibility Of The Regionalizing Electric Utility Industry, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, I will address environmental issues in the context of our rapidly evolving understanding of "restructuring." The market for electricity is fast becoming a series of regional marketplaces for wholesale transactions, operating on bid-based systems that move power at the lowest cost. There are plenty of states where power is still delivered as it has been for decades: by "bundled" service provided by vertically integrated utilities. However, the trend is toward regionalization, where independent entities control the transmission grid and play a major role in determining how power is delivered. These market participants, confusingly, have been known by …

Does The Efficient Market Theory Help Us Do Justice In A Time Of Madness, William O. Fisher Jan 2005

Does The Efficient Market Theory Help Us Do Justice In A Time Of Madness, William O. Fisher

Law Faculty Publications

This Article questions how well the efficient market theory, as applied by event studies, works in cases originating during the Internet, high-tech, and telecommunications bubble of 1998 to 2001. In doing so, the Article discusses technical and theoretical challenges to the efficient market theory. Principally, however, this Article argues that the use of the efficient market theory-and relatedly the event study methodology-is inappropriate in bubble cases for normative reasons. The normative connection between the efficient market theory-applied through event studies-and the lOb-5 elements-reliance, materiality, loss causation, and damages-presupposes that the market acts rationally. Market professionals supposedly impose that rationality through …
