The Nation-State And The Transnational Capitalist Class In The Era Of Global Accumulation, Jeffery Robert Gunn Jan 2005

The Nation-State And The Transnational Capitalist Class In The Era Of Global Accumulation, Jeffery Robert Gunn

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis represents a critical comparative and historical study of the challenges posed to the autonomy and sovereignty of the nation-state by the emerging transnational class structure in the current era of global accumulation. I examine key elements of modern state theory, contrasting them with class-based state theory. National models may be extended to help illustrate transnational relationships. Transnational institutions, components of the transnational state apparatus, serve as examples of the means by which this transnational capitalist class formulates and implements policy. But this transnational structure is not stable; it suffers from the very contradictions immanent to capitalism itself. I …

Critting The Crit In The Education Of Architects: From Bauhaus To Bolton Street, Patrick Flynn Jan 2005

Critting The Crit In The Education Of Architects: From Bauhaus To Bolton Street, Patrick Flynn

Theses

This investigative study is concerned with examining the current methods of assessment of architecture students in the system known as the “crit” and the associated methods of giving students feedback on their designs in a public forum. The aim of the research is to identify the main weaknesses of the crit system and to explore alternatives which perhaps would have more sustainable and transparent methods of assessment and feedback. Personal motivation for the research sprang from concerns regarding both the effectiveness of the crit from the pedagogical perspective of student learning and from concerns about it as a transparent and …

In The Realm Of The “Real”: Outsider Art And Its Paradoxes For Art Educators, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2005

In The Realm Of The “Real”: Outsider Art And Its Paradoxes For Art Educators, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this essay I want to argue that un (becoming) is a word much like Freud's (1919) discussion of the word unheimlich (uncanny), which reveals a secretive and clandestine aspect of art that art educators must and should concern themselves with, since it identifies a "realm of the Real" whose abjection legitimates our very practice at its expense. It marks a return of the repressed. Un (becoming), like Freud's uncanny is visual art's non-reflected double as I attempt to show. This is the issue I wish to raise when it comes to the question of so-called "Outsider art," sometimes referred …

The Troubled Intersection Of The Interests Of Christ And Commerce : Appellate-Court Review Of Virginia Sunday Closing Laws In Historical Overview Through 1942, William Robert Vanderkloot Jan 2005

The Troubled Intersection Of The Interests Of Christ And Commerce : Appellate-Court Review Of Virginia Sunday Closing Laws In Historical Overview Through 1942, William Robert Vanderkloot

Master's Theses

Virginia's Supreme Court of Appeals, between 1900 and the conclusion of this thesis in 1942, consistently narrowed Virginia's Sunday closing law, enacted in 1786 to prevent Sunday labor. While paying lip service to the statute's purpose, the court almost unhesitatingly chose statutory interpretations encouraging more Sunday labor, particularly by expanding its ''necessity" and "charity" exceptions. The legislature also granted additional statutory closing law exceptions. This reflected the preferences of the public as well, which increasingly depended on the services of others laboring on Sunday. These results were also due, in part, to inherent confusions and contradictions in the law itself, …

Economic Systems Of Foraging, Agricultural, And Industrial Societies, Frederic L. Pryor Jan 2005

Economic Systems Of Foraging, Agricultural, And Industrial Societies, Frederic L. Pryor

Economics Faculty Works

Drawing upon the disciplines of economics, anthropology, and history, and employing a new and unified analytic approach, Frederic L. Pryor reformulates in this book the entire field of comparative economic systems. He examines large samples of foraging (hunting, gathering, and fishing), agricultural, and industrial economies to explore four key questions: What are the distinct economic systems found in each group? Why do certain societies or nations have one economic system rather than another? What impact do economic systems have on the performance of the economy? How do these economic systems develop and change? The results provide a context that allows …

Trends In The Timing Of First Marriage Among Men And Women In The Developing World, Barbara Mensch, Susheela Singh, John B. Casterline Jan 2005

Trends In The Timing Of First Marriage Among Men And Women In The Developing World, Barbara Mensch, Susheela Singh, John B. Casterline

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The timing of first union merits investigation not only because of the close temporal link between marriage and the onset of childbearing, but also because the age when men and women marry has implications for the organization of family life and for gender relations within society. This paper begins by reviewing the contributions of various social science disciplines to an understanding of the timing of marriage. Using current status data from 73 countries provided by the United Nations Population Division and retrospective data from 52 Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 1990 and 2001, we then examine recent trends in …

The Causes Of Stalling Fertility Transitions, John Bongaarts Jan 2005

The Causes Of Stalling Fertility Transitions, John Bongaarts

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

An examination of fertility trends in countries with multiple DHS surveys found that in the 1990s fertility stalled in mid-transition in seven countries: Bangladesh, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Kenya, Peru, and Turkey. An analysis of trends in the determinants of fertility revealed a systematic pattern of leveling off or near leveling in a number of determinants, including contraceptive use, the demand for contraception, and wanted fertility. Findings suggest no major deterioration in contraceptive access during the stall, but levels of unmet need and unwanted fertility are relatively high and improvements in access to family planning methods would therefore be desirable. …

Accelerating Reproductive And Child Health Program Development: The Navrongo Initiative In Ghana, James F. Phillips, Ayaga A. Bawah, Fred N. Binka

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Successive global health and development agendas have been embraced by African governments—Alma Ata in 1978, the Bamako Initiative in 1987, the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development, and more recently the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—only to be followed by widespread implementation failure. This paper presents an approach to program development in Ghana that is using research to accelerate policy implementation. Originally launched in 1994 as a participatory pilot project of the Navrongo Health Research Centre, a controlled experimental study was initiated in 1996 to assess the fertility and child-survival impact of alternative community health and family planning service …

Native And Exotic Phragmites Australis In Rhode Island: Distribution And Differential Resistance To Insect Herbivores, Adam Matthew Lambert Jan 2005

Native And Exotic Phragmites Australis In Rhode Island: Distribution And Differential Resistance To Insect Herbivores, Adam Matthew Lambert

Open Access Dissertations

In this research, I studied an introduced strain of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex. Steudel that is displacing native P. australis in the United States and altering ecological processes of native environments. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of native and exotic P. australis in Rhode Island and determine if there is a difference in resistance to native and exotic insect herbivores among the various P. australis haplotypes. I also studied possible factors that may cause these differences. I conducted experiments using field surveys and field and laboratory insect feeding experiments. All exotic insects tested fed …

The Tension Between Legal Instrumentalism And The Rule Of Law, Brian Z. Tamanaha Jan 2005

The Tension Between Legal Instrumentalism And The Rule Of Law, Brian Z. Tamanaha

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

At the heart of the United States legal culture lie two core notions that exist in deep tension with one another: the idea that law is an instrument, and the rule of law ideal. Although they continue to coexist despite this tension, there are indications that the instrumental view of law is putting a serious strain on the rule of law ideal. The substantive version of the rule of law is the idea that there are legal limits on the government: there are certain things the government cannot do, even when exercising its sovereign lawmaking power. This version of the …

The Faux Pas Of A Vert Galant: The Historiography Of Henry Iv's Military Leadership, Annette Finley-Croswhite Jan 2005

The Faux Pas Of A Vert Galant: The Historiography Of Henry Iv's Military Leadership, Annette Finley-Croswhite

History Faculty Publications

Even though many modern historians agree that Henry IV was less than a brilliant military commander, a small but growing body of revisionist historians believe that his reputation deserves to be reassessed. While acknowledging his military innovations and battlefield successes, his critics see him primarily as an opportunist with a reckless streak who failed time and again to take full advantage of his victories. The revisionist school, however, believes that these interpretations are based on an inaccurate assessment of early modern warfare and its unique political, religious, and social components. Henry's modern defenders further note that his reputation has suffered …

Lockouts, Protests, And Scabs: A Critical Assessment Of The "Los Angeles Herald Examiner" Strike [Article], Bonnie Brennen

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay uses the case of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner strike, 1967–1977, to show how a critical labor perspective offers historically grounded, politically informed, and culturally situated analyses of media practices and uses. The decade-long strike analyzed here, which has been virtually ignored by media historians, highlights the devastating economic consequences for both the newspaper and the Guild. This essay focuses on the political and cultural implications of class conflict, read through the power struggle between Los Angeles Newspaper Guild members and the Hearst-owned Herald Examiner over issues of identity, work, and economics.

Suffering For Science: Reason And Sacrifice In Modern America, Rebecca M. Herzig Jan 2005

Suffering For Science: Reason And Sacrifice In Modern America, Rebecca M. Herzig

Faculty Books

From gruesome self-experimentation to exhausting theoretical calculations, stories abound of scientists willfully surrendering health, well-being, and personal interests for the sake of their work. What accounts for the prevalence of this coupling of knowledge and pain-and for the peculiar assumption that science requires such suffering? In this lucid and absorbing history, Rebecca M. Herzig explores the rise of an ethic of "self-sacrifice" in American science. Delving into some of the more bewildering practices of the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, she describes when and how science-the supposed standard of all things judicious and disinterested-came to rely on an enthralled …

Spirits Of Defiance: National Prohibition And Jazz Age Literature, 1920-1933, Kathleen Morgan Drowne Jan 2005

Spirits Of Defiance: National Prohibition And Jazz Age Literature, 1920-1933, Kathleen Morgan Drowne

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

National Prohibition (1920-1933) ranks as one of the most divisive political controversies of the twentieth century, and its reverberations echoed through nearly every facet of American popular culture. Not surprisingly, many novelists and short story writers added their voices to this contentious public debate by incorporating into their works their interpretations of the wildly controversial federal liquor laws. In Spirits of Defiance, the first book to examine how American writers responded to the far-reaching effects of the Eighteenth Amendment, Kathleen Drowne analyzes the literary portrayals of bootleggers, moonshiners, revenuers, speakeasies, cabarets, and other specifically Prohibition-era characters and settings in a …
