Patrilateral Bias Among A Traditionally Egalitarian People: Ju/'Hoansi Naming Practice, Patricia Draper, Christine Haney Jul 2005

Patrilateral Bias Among A Traditionally Egalitarian People: Ju/'Hoansi Naming Practice, Patricia Draper, Christine Haney

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The Ju/'hoansi (!Kung) of Namibia and Botswana are unusual for the strong norm to name children exclusively for kin and primarily for grandparents. Naming carries important significance by linking the two namesakes and because names are a basis for extending fictive kin links. In the 1950s Lorna Marshall reported that the father has the right to name children and that he "invariably" named them for the paternal grandparents, although having the option of naming children born later for his wife's parents. The authors used a large database of genealogical information that was collected nearly concurrently with Marshall's report to test …

2005 Nebraska Rural Poll Results: Community Life And Housing In Rural Nebraska, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bruce B. Johnson, Alan J. Tomkins

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Many rural communities are experiencing population decline. However, rural residents have continued to show a strong attachment to their communities. How do rural Nebraskans feel about their community? Are they satisfied with the services provided? Do they own their home? What is the condition of their home?

This report details 2,851 responses to the 2005 Nebraska Rural Poll, the tenth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their community and housing. Trends for some of these questions are examined by comparing data from the nine previous polls to this year’s results. Spatial Variation Of Protein, Oil, And Starch In Corn, Samuel G. Mcneill, Michael D. Montross, Scott A. Shearer Jul 2005

Spatial Variation Of Protein, Oil, And Starch In Corn, Samuel G. Mcneill, Michael D. Montross, Scott A. Shearer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Significant spatial yield variations are known to exist in cornfields with different soil types, topsoil depth, and other variables. Similarly, variations might also be found among the highly valued chemical components (oil, protein, and starch) in corn kernels due to local differences in soil type, fertility, acidity/pH, organic matter, etc. This study quantified the spatial variability of protein, oil, and starch content of corn from two conventional cornfields and two high-oil cornfields. Whole ears were harvested by hand from 20 to 40 randomly selected locations within each field. A differential global positioning system (DGPS) receiver recorded the location of each …

Applying Intent-Based Parentage Principles To Nonlegal Lesbian Coparents, Melanie B. Jacobs Jul 2005

Applying Intent-Based Parentage Principles To Nonlegal Lesbian Coparents, Melanie B. Jacobs

Northern Illinois University Law Review

With increasing frequency, courts are being asked to determine the parental rights of lesbian partners; some of these partners have no biological connection to their child(ren) while others have donated genetic material. Current parentage laws are often inadequate to resolve these disputes and even when they are available, courts are often reluctant to apply them and depart from the traditional family law paradigm of one mother/one father. In this article, the author argues that courts should embrace the doctrine of intentional parenthood to legalize the rights of nonlegal lesbian partners, with two caveats: first, courts should not apply intent-based principles …

Community And School Drug Prevention Strategy Prevalence: Differential Effects By Setting And Substance, Curtis J. Vanderwaal, Lisa M. Powell, Yvonne M. Terry-Mcelrath, Yanjun Bao, Brian R. Flay

Faculty Publications

This study used key informant interviews and student survey data in 508 U.S. communities to examine relationships between the prevalence of community and non-classroom-based school substance prevention strategies and teen substance use rates. After controlling for covariates, analyses indicated that: (1) adult-supervised after-school activities were significantly related to lower past 30-day cigarette smoking and both past 30-day alcohol use and binge drinking; (2) unsupervised after-school recreational facilities were significantly associated with both lower past 30-day cigarette smoking and current daily smoking; (3) community activities to reduce substance use were significantly related to lower binge drinking; and (4) student organizations to …

In The Interests Of Justice: A Critique Of The Icty Trial Court's Decision To Assign Counsel To Slobodan Milosevic, Milan Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

On February 12, 2002, Slobodan Milosevic became the first head of state to be brought before an international criminal tribunal. The Milosevic trial was hailed as a momentous event for both the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia ("ICTY") and international justice as a whole. As one former ICTY official said at the start of the trial, "Milosevic's transfer to the Hague is the capstone of the tribunal's somewhat improbable rise from the margins of the international arena to that of a serious international institution."

Unfortunately, the trial appears to have been more than the ICTY bargained for. The …

States' and nations' laws collide when foreign factors appear in a lawsuit. Nonresident litigants, incidents outside the forum, parallel lawsuits, and judgments from other jurisdictions can create problems with personal jurisdiction, choice of law, and the recognition of foreign judgments. This article reviews Texas conflicts cases from Texas state and federal courts during the Survey period from October 1, 2003 through November 31, 2004. The article excludes cases involving federal-state conflicts; intrastate issues such as subject matter jurisdiction and venue; and conflicts in time, such as the applicability of prior or subsequent law within a state. State and federal cases …

Overview Of Federal Wealth-Building Policies Relevant To Rural America, Jon Bailey Jul 2005

Overview Of Federal Wealth-Building Policies Relevant To Rural America, Jon Bailey

Center for Social Development Research

While the general philosophy behind wealth-building strategies generally makes little or no distinction between urban and rural areas, the federal government has established a specific regime of rural wealth-building programs recognizing the unique economies and challenges facing rural people and rural communities. This is particularly true for home ownership and business development and in the rural development programs of the United States Department of Agriculture. This paper provides an overview of federal wealth-building programs that apply to rural people and rural places in the United States, with an emphasis on those programs in USDA and other federal agencies that apply …

Intention To Seek Information On Cancer Genetics, James E. Andrews, J. David Johnson, Donald O. Case, Suzie Allard, Kimberly Kelly

School of Information Faculty Publications

Objective. The public has a high interest in seeking personal genetic information, which holds implications for health information seeking research and health care policy. Rapid advances in cancer genetics research promise early detection, prevention and treatment, yet consumers may have greater difficulty finding and using the information they may need to make informed decisions regarding their personal health and the future of their families.

Design. A statewide telephone survey was conducted of non-institutionalized Kentucky residents 18 years of age or older to investigate factors associated with the intention to seek cancer genetics information, including the need for such information seeking …

QUESTION: How have theorists and empirical researchers treated the human tendency to avoid discomforting information?

DATA SOURCES: A historical review (1890-2004) of theory literature in communication and information studies, coupled with searches of recent studies on uptake of genetic testing and on coping strategies of cancer patients, was performed.

STUDY SELECTION: The authors' review of the recent literature included searches of the MEDLINE, PsychInfo, and CINAHL databases between 1992 and summer of 2004 and selective, manual searches of earlier literature. Search strategies included the following subject headings and key words: MeSH headings: Genetic Screening/psychology, Decision Making, Neoplasms/diagnosis/genetics/psychology; CINAHL headings: Genetic …

Introduction – 21st Century Law, Technology And Ethics: The Lawyer’S Role As A Public Citizen Serving The Public Good, Irma S. Russell

Faculty Works

The lawyer's role as a "public citizen" also involves a duty to "seek improvement of the law." Changing technology has changed the way lawyers practice law. As public citizens lawyers have an affirmative commitment to the social goal of a just society. Ethical issues arise in the use of technology in society, and lawyers play a central role in social ordering. The idea that advocates in an adversary system have special responsibilities is not new.

Generalism Versus Specialism: Responses Of Diadegma Mollipla (Holmgren) And Diadegma Semiclausum (Hellen), To The Host Shift Of The Diamondback Moth (Plutella Xylostella L.) To Peas, A. Roßbach, B. Löhr, S. Vidal

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A population of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) (DBM) was recently found to infest sugar snap- and snowpeas in the Rift Valley in Kenya, causing heavy damage. The influence of this host shift on host location preferences of two parasitoids was investigated: The indigenous Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren) regarded as a relative generalist, and Diadegma semiclausum(Hellen), regarded as highly specific to DBM. The attractiveness of different odour sources was compared for the two parasitoid species using a Y-tube olfactometer using naïve females. D. mollipla was not significantly attracted to any cabbage related odours but showed a significant preference …

Physical Activity And Use Of Suburban Train Stations: An Exploratory Analysis, Michael Greenberg, John Renne, Robert Lane, Jeffrey Zupan Jul 2005

Physical Activity And Use Of Suburban Train Stations: An Exploratory Analysis, Michael Greenberg, John Renne, Robert Lane, Jeffrey Zupan

Journal of Public Transportation

Physical inactivity contributes to a growing proportion of illness and premature death in the United States. Only about 45 percent of Americans meet the recommended national standard for physical activity. Yet, analysis of 300 surveys collected from train riders at three walkable New Jersey suburban train stations showed that 78 percent met the activity guidelines. A new train station that allows these riders to save time in their commute has attracted new riders and has led existing commuters to change their commute. One-third of those surveyed reported additional physical activity primarily because they walked more after leaving the train in …

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Ingergenerational Equity, Cass R. Sunstein, Arden Rowell

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

There is an elaborate debate over the practice of "discounting" regulatory benefits, such as environmental improvements and decreased risks to health and life, when those benefits will not be enjoyed until some future date. Economists tend to think that, as a general rule, such benefits should be discounted in the same way as money; many philosophers and lawyers doubt that conclusion on empirical and normative grounds. Both sides neglect a simple point: Once government has converted regulatory benefits into monetary equivalents, what is being discounted is merely money, not regulatory benefits as such. No one seeks to discount health and …
