Instructions In Inequality: Development, Human Rights, Capabilities, And Gender Violence In Schools, Erika George Jul 2005

Instructions In Inequality: Development, Human Rights, Capabilities, And Gender Violence In Schools, Erika George

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the international community's gender equality targets will not be realized by 2015 because the problems associated with sexual violence against girls in schools are situated at an intersection of contested conceptual divides between human rights (civil and political liberties) and development aims (social and economic needs). Cracks in the conceptual foundations of both the liberal and utilitarian theories of justice and equality, which support traditional human rights advocacy and economic development plans, respectively render each approach inadequate to fully identify and address the grave danger sexual violence and harassment in schools pose to educational equality. In …

State Legislative Update, Christopher Benne, Tracy Justis, Brandon Lawson, Marty Seaton

Journal of Dispute Resolution

As a response to a growing number of states enacting legislation regarding mediations 0 , the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) and the Dispute Resolution section of the American Bar Association, drafted the Uniform Mediation Act (UMA). The goal of the drafters in creating the UMA was to promote uniformity in an area of law that varied greatly from state to state. After observing the approach of several states , the drafters chose to place a broad confidentiality privilege for all mediation participants at the heart of the Act. In addition, the UMA requires the mediator …

How To Create A Successful Team Teaching Partnership, Travis Haskins Jul 2005

How To Create A Successful Team Teaching Partnership, Travis Haskins

Theses and Dissertations

Studies have shown that there is a movement towards inclusion and team teaching in schools throughout the nation. This movement has not only affected the students who are being mainstreamed, but the teachers who are now co-teaching these classrooms. This study used questionnaires, teacher interviews, and a teacher research journal to sample a southern New Jersey elementary school. The participants' responses provided insights to answer the question "How do teachers create a successful team teaching partnership?" The study suggests criteria for successful teams and discusses possible barriers which may hinder effective teaching partnerships. The four main themes which emerged from …

Psychometric Properties Of The Self-Efficacy For Exercise Questionnaire In A Diverse Sample Of Men And Women, Sarah Wilcox, Patricia A. Sharpe, Brent E. Hutto, Michelle L. Granner

Faculty Publications

Background: Self-efficacy is a consistent correlate of physical activity, but most self-efficacy measures have not been validated in diverse populations. This study examined the construct, criterion-related, and convergent validity and internal consistency of the Self-Efficacy for Exercise Questionnaire. Methods: African American and Caucasian adults (N = 1919) from two adjacent counties in South Carolina were identified through a list-assisted random digit-dialed telephone survey. Psychometric properties of the measure were assessed by gender, race, age, education, and body weight subgroups. Results: Across all subgroups, a single-factor solution explained 93 to 98% of the common variance in an exploratory factor analysis, …

Information And Communication Technologies And The Effects Of Globalization: Twenty-First Century “Digital Slavery” For Developing Countries—Myth Or Reality?, L. A. Ogunsola

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to examine the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) revolution and the concept of globalization as they effect developing countries. Globalization as one of the reasons for possible widening of the gap between the poor and the rich nations was examined and the emerging concept of “digital slavery” was carefully evaluated. The wide gap in availability and use of ICTs across the world and the influences ICTs exert on globalization at the expense of developing countries were carefully examined and suggestions and necessary policies were offered for developing countries to leap-frog the industrialization …

Stories Of Resiliency: Successful Female Educational Leaders, Anita M. Pankake, Danna Beaty

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

We examined the reported experiences of 12 successful female educational leaders as stories of resiliency development through overcoming or coming back from adversity. Specifically, the reported experiences of these women were examined to determine: When did adversity evidence itself in the lives of these leaders? Were any of the adversity experiences common among the women in terms of when they occurred and the contexts or settings in which they occurred? What strategies did these women use in overcoming or coming back from these adversity experiences? Do the reported experiences of these twelve successful female educational leaders align with the literature …

Women In History--Bella Stavisky Abzug (1920-1998), Margaret Blair

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Although not normally connected with educational issues, Bella Abzug was a passionate supporter of women's rights, and often education went hand-in-hand with improving the economic conditions in which women lived worldwide, and education was vital to women becoming more involved in the political process. From the time she defied Jewish tradition to learn to read the Torah, Bella Abzug fought for equality of women in education. She was student body president at Hunter College where she was active in political causes with other students. During this time she opposed the Rapp-Coudert committee, that was attempting to "crush public education" and …

Voices Of Women In The Field--Reflections From A Chair, Clarissa Craig Jul 2005

Voices Of Women In The Field--Reflections From A Chair, Clarissa Craig

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

I did not grow up wanting to be a woman administrator in a community college setting ... or a woman administrator anywhere for that matter. Until about the sixth grade when my height shot up to almost six feet, I was going to be an airline stewardess and jet set around the world. Liking science and math, my attentions then turned to being a doctor, specifically a pediatrician. How did I get here? It hasn't been a particularly circuitous path. Yet, it is one that does seem to have evolved rather than having been a conscious choice at some point. …

Review Of The Middle Of Everywhere: Helping Refugees Enter The American Community By Mary Pipher., Patricia Hoffman

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Pipher, author of The Middle of Everywhere: Helping ReJugees Enter the American Community, has written an intensively personal narrative exploring her own consciousness as well as giving an eye-opening treatise on the immigrant experience. Although some approached this conflict with a combative spirit, patriotic zeal, or a call for isolationism, Pipher chose a personal approach culled from her first hand experience with some of these newest immigrants. Pipher did not set out to do an ethnographic study. One emerged spontaneously as she became involved in the lives of refugees, migrant workers, and other recent immigrants.

Women In Athletic Leadership, Sandra L. Moore, Suzanne L. Gilmour, Mary P. Kinsella

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Despite significant increased participation opportunities for girls and women in sports following the passage of Title IX, women remain underrepresented in secondary athletic leadership roles. Thirty-eight female and 158 male high school athletic directors responded to a 19-item Athletic Director Survey (ADS) designed to elicit information on the following: position attainment factors, attainment and retention barriers, perceptions of similar or different barriers for women and men, leadership and management skills, personal sacrifices, and strengthening female candidacy for athletic directorships. Results indicate· the importance of mentoring and networking in providing women with equal access to athletic leadership positions.

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 2 - On The Limitations Of Child-Custody Evaluations, Ira Daniel Turkat Jul 2005

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 2 - On The Limitations Of Child-Custody Evaluations, Ira Daniel Turkat

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Child-custody litigation is typically hostile, stressful, and expensive. For thousands of years, society has wrestled with the issue of properly assigning custody of children when parents fight over it. In King Solomon’s court, there were no licensed psychologists to extensively interview families, apply psychological tests, and offer recommendations. Today, it is commonplace in our society to have psychologists evaluate families litigating over custody.

In the United States, approximately 100,000 custody battles take place each year. However, psychological evaluations are not ordered in all contested custody cases. By and large, a custody investigation is ordered when it is unclear who should …

Violence, Harassment, And Bullying At Work: How Does The Australian Rail Industry Compare And What Can Be Done?, Kristin Van Barneveld, Roger Jowett

Journal of Public Transportation

Violence in the workplace is becoming an increasingly important issue. Violence can take a number of forms including physical, verbal and nonverbal communication, intimidation and bullying, exclusion, sexual harassment, and stalking. In the rail industry, workers can be exposed to direct attacks, witnessing attacks on passengers, and suicides, in addition to accidents involving coworkers and/or members of the general public. This article draws from the Australian experience to highlight the risks posed to rail workers by workplace violence, harassment, and bullying. It is suggested that further research is required in the rail industry to identify the extent of these issues. …
