Gradient Directed Regularization For Sparse Gaussian Concentration Graphs, With Applications To Inference Of Genetic Networks, Hongzhe Li, Jiang Gui Dec 2005

Gradient Directed Regularization For Sparse Gaussian Concentration Graphs, With Applications To Inference Of Genetic Networks, Hongzhe Li, Jiang Gui

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Large-scale microarray gene expression data provide the possibility of constructing genetic networks or biological pathways. Gaussian graphical models have been suggested to provide an effective method for constructing such genetic networks. However, most of the available methods for constructing Gaussian graphs do not account for the sparsity of the networks and are computationally more demanding or infeasible, especially in the settings of high-dimension and low sample size. We introduce a threshold gradient descent regularization procedure for estimating the sparse precision matrix in the setting of Gaussian graphical models and demonstrate its application to identifying genetic networks. Such a procedure is …

The Role Of An Explicit Causal Framework In Affected Sib Pair Designs With Covariates , Constantine E. Frangakis, Fan Li, Betty Q. Doan Dec 2005

The Role Of An Explicit Causal Framework In Affected Sib Pair Designs With Covariates , Constantine E. Frangakis, Fan Li, Betty Q. Doan

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The affected sib/relative pair (ASP/ARP) design is often used with covariates to find genes that can cause a disease in pathways other than through those covariates. However, such "covariates" can themselves have genetic determinants, and the validity of existing methods has so far only been argued under implicit assumptions. We propose an explicit causal formulation of the problem using potential outcomes and principal stratification. The general role of this formulation is to identify and separate the meaning of the different assumptions that can provide valid causal inference in linkage analysis. This separation helps to (a) develop better methods under explicit …

Boots On The Ground: Use And Implications Of War Metaphors In A Top Team, Jo L. Longnecker Dec 2005

Boots On The Ground: Use And Implications Of War Metaphors In A Top Team, Jo L. Longnecker

Organization Management Journal

This paper describes the use and implications of war and military metaphors shared by a top management team working in the defense industry. The team used war metaphors pervasively to make meaning of the ambiguity and uncertainty in its environment. Five categories of war metaphors and action verbs were found. Findings from this study suggest the team used metaphors to structure and communicate abstract ideas and experiences, highlight or hide aspects of the work environment, unite team members, lead their organization, and maintain their warlike culture. Further findings demonstrate how the team constructed and maintained metaphors individually, intersubjectively, unreflectively, and …

Obesity, Self-Complexity, And Compartmentalization: On The Implications Of Obesity For Self-Concept Organization, Bruce E. Blaine, C. E. Johnson Dec 2005

Obesity, Self-Complexity, And Compartmentalization: On The Implications Of Obesity For Self-Concept Organization, Bruce E. Blaine, C. E. Johnson

Statistics Faculty/Staff Publications

The relationship between obesity and structural aspects of the self-concept was examined in adult women. Participants were 119 adult women [age range: 18-73, M=26.9; body mass index (BMI) range: 16.2-54.7, M=27.3] who completed measures of self-esteem, self-complexity, and the spontaneous self-concept. BMI was associated with less complex and more compartmentalized self-knowledge and more frequent mention of weight-stereotypic traits as self-descriptive. The findings are discussed in the context of research on obesity- related stigma.

Post-School Education And Training Pathways To Age 20., Sheldon Rothman, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

LSAY Briefing Reports

This Briefing summarises three recent LSAY research reports based on a sample of 13 613 young people who were in Year 9 in 1995. It focuses on those young people who entered formal post-school study at a university or a TAFE institution, or undertook an apprenticeship or traineeship since leaving secondary school. The majority of these young people completed Year 12 in 1998, and 1999 was their first year of post-school study. About one in five members of the cohort had left school before completing Year 12 and about 60 per cent of them entered some other form of study …

LSAY Cohort Reports

This report provides details of the experiences of the 1995 Year 9 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth. Information on this cohort was first collected in 1995, when these young people were Year 9 students in Australian schools. The reference period for this report is 2003, when the modal age of respondents was 22 years. Information about the 1995 Year 9 LSAY cohort’s activities in previous years is available in earlier reports in this series: McKenzie (2002), Rothman (2002), Rothman and Hillman (2003) and Hillman (2003).

The Voting Rights Cases Of 1937? The Adoption Of Voting Machine Technology In Baltimore City, Andrew H. Robinson

Legal History Publications

Article I, § 1 of the Maryland Constitution states that all elections “shall be by ballot.” What exactly constitutes “by ballot” has evolved over several generations to include everything from the viva voce casting of ballots in crowded rooms and seamy city streets to the electronic touch screens and computerized smart cards of the Direct Record Electronic voting machine first implemented in Baltimore City in 1996. What has remained constant through the ages, however, has been the ever present commitment on behalf of State and city officials to utilize the technology and resources available to them to deliver to the …

Effects Of Strength Training On The Quadriceps To Hamstring Ratio In A Female Recreational Athlete, Heather Kennedy

Graduate Theses

Kennedy, H. P. EFFECTS OFSTRENGTH TRAINING ON THE QUADRICEPS TO HAMSTRING RATIO IN A FEMALE RECREATIONAL ATHLETE, 2005. Three recreational female athletes were tested on the effects a strength training program would have on their quadriceps to hamstring ratio. The subjects ranged in age from 24-33 years old. The program was an 8 week strength training program. One subject was unable to complete the program due to pregnancy and one was injured in a car wreck midway through the program. The subject who completed the 8 week training program showed overall improvement in lower extremity strength but did not show …

Microfinance And Rural Development: A Long-Term Perspective, Henk A. J. Moll Dec 2005

Microfinance And Rural Development: A Long-Term Perspective, Henk A. J. Moll

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The long-term perspective on microfinance starts with a discussion of three central issues: first, views and policies, with two opposing views: "credit for target group" and "pushing the financial frontier", second, the performance of microfinance institutions measured via two objectives: outreach and financial sustainability, third, microfinance and rural development. This latter issue is approached through analyses of the effects of financial services on rural households and analyses of long term national financial development. Both micro and macro studies show positive effects of an expansion of savings and lending services, financial deepening. The negative side of financial deepening, the apparently unavoidable …
