A State-Supported, Merit-Based Scholarship Program That Works, Robert Ackerman, Martha Young, Rodney Young Dec 2005

A State-Supported, Merit-Based Scholarship Program That Works, Robert Ackerman, Martha Young, Rodney Young

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The Millennium Scholarship Program, which provides merit-based scholarships for Nevada's students, is designed to increase college participation, college persistence, and the number of in-state students enrolling in state institutions of higher education (IHEs). Data gathered over the past five years reflect that Nevada's Millennium Scholarship Program has successfully met its goals. Further, it has improved student quality in IHEs, as is evident by a lower percentage of students taking college remedial courses. A major focus of this study is to demonstrate how Nevada's merit-based scholarship program may serve as a model for other states attempting to improve college participation.

Protection Of "Persona" In The Eu And In The Us: A Comparative Analysis, Anna E. Helling Dec 2005

Protection Of "Persona" In The Eu And In The Us: A Comparative Analysis, Anna E. Helling

LLM Theses and Essays

The American Right of Publicity has been developed and applied differently in the states of the U.S. for several decades and still several questions remain regarding the nature of the right. In Europe, many countries seem to follow the American development or have a similar right protecting the commercial value of a person’s identity emerging in their legal system. With the constant globalization and increase in interaction of the sports and entertainment markets in the world, harmonization of the different rules protecting this commercial interest in a persona is necessary to grant sufficient protection. This work is a comparative study …

Sensors To Monitor Cfrp/Concrete Bond In Beams Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Sangdo Hong, Ronald S. Harichandran Dec 2005

Sensors To Monitor Cfrp/Concrete Bond In Beams Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Sangdo Hong, Ronald S. Harichandran

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The use of inexpensive electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based sensor technology for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of bond degradation between external carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement and concrete is examined. Copper tape on the surface of the CFRP sheet, stainless steel wire embedded in the concrete, and reinforcing bars were used as the sensing elements. Laboratory experiments were designed to test the capability of the sensors to detect the debonding of the CFRP from the concrete and to study the effect of short-term (humidity and temperature fluctuations) and long-term (freeze-thaw and wet-dry exposure and rebar corrosion) environmental conditions on the measurements. The …

Limits Of Temperature Tolerance Of Leishmania Enriettii And Leishmania Hertigi In A Real-Time Pcr Assay, Christina Salinas Dec 2005

Limits Of Temperature Tolerance Of Leishmania Enriettii And Leishmania Hertigi In A Real-Time Pcr Assay, Christina Salinas

Theses & Dissertations

Protozoans of the genus Leishmania are intracellular parasites found across five continents. They cycle between a promastigote form inside the digestive tracts of blood-feeding female sand flies and an amastigote form within mammalian host macrophages. Temperature is an important factor that must be defeated in order for the parasites' survival and continuance. This paper studies the limits of temperature tolerance by Leishmania enriettii and Leishmania hertigi. It was hypothesized that a correlation would exist between the limits of temperature tolerance to body temperature of their host. I explored growth characteristics at 21,27,29, 33, 35, 37, and 39° C. It was …

Elder Abuse: More Is Expected Unless Society And Newspapers Intervene, Betty Lou Guckian Dec 2005

Elder Abuse: More Is Expected Unless Society And Newspapers Intervene, Betty Lou Guckian

Theses & Dissertations

Elder abuse is a social illness of epidemic proportions in the United States and older Americans constitute one of the largest age groups in the nation. Ironically, there exists no comprehensive scientific study on the national incidence or prevalence of elder abuse in both institutional and domestic settings. However, state-based studies conducted over more than two decades show rampant elder abuse is a fact. Many factors contribute to the lack of research on a national scale including victims' underreporting of abuse for fear of retaliation. Lack of strong federal oversight of inconsistent, state-based laws and investigative procedures as well as …
