Christian Faith And Political Life: A Pre- And Post-Election Dialogue, Jason Carter, Randy Beck Aug 2005

Christian Faith And Political Life: A Pre- And Post-Election Dialogue, Jason Carter, Randy Beck

ExpressO

The 2004 presidential election has generated a wide-ranging discussion of the role of religion in public life. Well before the election, Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, anticipated the difficulties the political left would experience in attracting the votes of theologically conservative Christians. In a paper initially drafted for a Spring 2004 law school seminar, Mr. Carter called for a genuine dialogue about political implications of the Christian faith, designed to overcome the country's unhealthy polarization between a religious right and a secular left. In light of the election results, Prof. Randy Beck suggested that Mr. Carter's seminar …

A User-Friendly Introduction To Link-Probit-Normal Models, Brian S. Caffo, Michael Griswold Aug 2005

A User-Friendly Introduction To Link-Probit-Normal Models, Brian S. Caffo, Michael Griswold

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Probit-normal models have attractive properties compared to logit-normal models. In particular, they allow for easy specification of marginal links of interest while permitting a conditional random effects structure. Moreover, programming fitting algorithms for probit-normal models can be trivial with the use of well-developed algorithms for approximating multivariate normal quantiles. In typical settings, the data cannot distinguish between probit and logit conditional link functions. Therefore, if marginal interpretations are desired, the default conditional link should be the most convenient one. We refer to models with a probit conditional link an arbitrary marginal link and a normal random effect distribution as link-probit-normal …

Substantive Due Process As A Source Of Constitutional Protection For Nonpolitical Speech, Gregory P. Magarian Aug 2005

Substantive Due Process As A Source Of Constitutional Protection For Nonpolitical Speech, Gregory P. Magarian

Working Paper Series

Present First Amendment doctrine presumptively protects anything within the descriptive category “expression” from government regulation, subject to balancing against countervailing government interests. As government actions during the present war on terrorism have made all too clear, that doctrine allows intolerable suppression of political debate and dissent – the expressive activity most integral to our constitutional design. At the same time, present doctrine fails to give a clear account of why the Constitution protects expressive autonomy and when that protection properly should yield to government interests, leading to an inconsistent and unsatisfying free speech regime. In this article, Professor Magarian advocates …

Faculty Publications

The worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a model system for studying many aspects of biology, including host responses to bacterial pathogens, but it is not known to support replication of any virus. Plants and insects encode multiple Dicer enzymes that recognize distinct precursors of small RNAs and may act cooperatively. However, it is not known whether the single Dicer of worms and mammals is able to initiate the small RNA-guided RNA interference (RNAi) antiviral immunity as occurs in plants and insects. Here we show complete replication of the Flock house virus (FHV) bipartite, plus-strand RNA genome in C. elegans. We show …

Reconceptualizing Due Process In Criminal Justice: Contributions From Law And Social Science, Christopher Slobogin Aug 2005

Reconceptualizing Due Process In Criminal Justice: Contributions From Law And Social Science, Christopher Slobogin

ExpressO

This article challenges the accepted wisdom, at least since the Supreme Court’s decision in Gault, that procedures in juvenile delinquency court should mimic the adult criminal process. The legal basis for this challenge is Gault itself, as well as the other Supreme Court cases that triggered the juvenile justice revolution of the past decades, for all of these cases relied on the due process clause, not the provisions of the Constitution that form the foundation for adult criminal procedure. That means that the central goal in juvenile justice is fundamental fairness, which does not have to be congruent with the …

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Quaternization of the nitrogen atom of 2-amino-4-chlorophenyl phenyl sulfide analogues of chlorpromazine improved inhibition ∼40-fold (3′,4′-dichlorobenzyl-[5-chloro-2-phenylsulfan- ylphenylamino)-propyl]-dimethylammonium chloride inhibited trypanothione reductase from Trypanosoma cruzi with a linear competitive Ki value of 1.7 ( 0.2 µM). Molecular modelling explained docking orientations and energies by: (i) involvement of the Z-site hydrophobic pocket (roughly bounded by F396′, P398′, and L399′), (ii) ionic interactions for the cationic nitrogen with Glu-466′ or -467′. A series of N-acyl-2-amino-4-chlorophenyl sulfides showed mixed inhibition (Ki, Ki′ ) 11.3-42.8 µM). The quaternized analogues of the 2-chlorophenyl phenylsulfides had strong antitrypanosomal and antileishmanial activity in vitro against T. bruceirhodesiense STIB900, …

Court Of Appeals Again Restrains Lower Courts, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher Aug 2005

Court Of Appeals Again Restrains Lower Courts, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Through a review of recent case history, this article examines the role of courts in land use decisions. The consensus of the holdings is that a court should not substitute its discretion for that of a local land use board so long as the board’s decision was based on substantial evidence on the record. The rational for this standard of deference is based on the idea that local land use boards are legislative bodies that understand the needs of the communities they serve. This article highlights several instances where appeals courts reign in the power of trial courts that overstep …

Exploration Of Ideal Body Image Among African-American Women, Shannon Denise Nickens Aug 2005

Exploration Of Ideal Body Image Among African-American Women, Shannon Denise Nickens

Dissertations

Body image dissatisfaction is a pervasive problem, most notably among women, that is neither well understood nor well defined. Inconsistent and overly narrow definitions of body image make it difficult to draw conclusions regarding the degree and type of dissatisfaction across cultural and/or various ethnic groups. Thus far, research has largely focused on size, shape, and weight concerns, ignoring physical features that may be salient to women belonging to non-Caucasian ethnic groups. This study explored African-American (AA) preferences for weight, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and salient physical appearance attributes, as well as their identification with the ¿thin¿ ideal, racial identity salience, …

Culturally-Based Primary Prevention: An Alaskan Native Dance Group, RenéE Irene Culp Aug 2005

Culturally-Based Primary Prevention: An Alaskan Native Dance Group, RenéE Irene Culp

Psychology

This study investigated a culturally-based primary prevention program in Alaska. This program is a Native dance group that focuses on increasing the number of developmental assets within each member. Previous research has indicated that involvement in activities, such as the program described, may work to instill developmental assets, decreasing the likeliness of youths engaging in risk behaviors and increasing engagement in healthy behaviors. Findings from this study did not support the notion that youths who participate in a culturally-based primary prevention program demonstrate more assets of clinical significance than those youths who do not participate in such a program. Further, …
