Association Between Lamellar Body Count And Respiratory Distress In Neonates, Shohreh Bahasadri, Nasrin Changizi
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Assessment of fetal lung maturity by a simple and rapid test has a pivotal role in obstetric managements. Lack of modern laboratory techniques in our country made us investigate whether lamellar body count (LBC) can be applied efficiently in the evaluation of fetal lung maturity. METHODS: Lamellar body count was assessed in 104 unspun amniotic fluid samples taken from pregnant women admitted at Akbar Abadi Hospital, Tehran, Iran between May 2003 and November 2003 whose fetuses were at risk for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Cut-off points for LBC were determined to evaluate the risk of RDS. Standard clinical and …

Adhesive Intestinal Obstruction Following Blunt Abdominal Trauma, Ashraf F. Hefny, Karl Lunsjo, Sandhya Joshi, Fikri M. Abu-Zidan
Saudi Medical Journal
Advances in diagnosis and management of multiple trauma patients have lead to adopting a conservative approach for most patients with blunt abdominal trauma. Intestinal obstruction is a rare complication for this approach. Herein, we report a 37-year-old male, who did not have an abdominal operation, and who developed adhesive intestinal obstruction 7 weeks following blunt abdominal trauma. We detected no signs of peritonitis or intra-abdominal bleeding clinically or radiologically on admission. We initially treated the intestinal obstruction conservatively, but the obstruction did not resolve. Finally, we performed laparotomy, which showed that the small bowel was matted together by thick fibrous …

Applying Qualitative Methods In Organizations: A Note For Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Rebecca Ibhaguelo Ehigie
The Qualitative Report
Early approach to research in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology was oriented towards quantitative techniques as a result of influences from the social sciences. As the focus of I/O psychology expands from psychological test development to other personnel functions, there has been an inclusion of qualitative methods in I/O psychology practice. The present paper therefore examines how qualitative methods like observation, interviews, ethnography, focus group discussion, nominal group technique, Delphi method, and projective techniques can be used by I/O psychologists in organizational studies. It is believed that knowledge gained on the application s of these qualitative methods would enhance understanding …

Integrating The Diverse Definitions Of Happiness: A Time-Sequential Framework Of Subjective Well-Being, Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, Maya Tamir, Christie N. Scollon, Marrisa Diener
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The field of subjective well-being (SWB) is primarily concerned with people's evaluation of their lives; however, it includes a wide range of concepts, from momentary moods to global life satisfaction judgments. We propose a framework that integrates these diverse constructs. Our sequential temporal framework of subjective well-being describes experiences of well-being from the events and circumstances that cause evaluative reactions, through the emotional reactions to these events, to recall of these reactions, and finally to global judgments of well-being based on the previous stages. The hypothesized processes that translate the various steps in the sequence into one another are described, …

Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This presentation was given in September of 2005 as Dr. Gordon A. Crews’ presidential address during his year as president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. It is an overview of the issue of academic and professional integrity, or lack thereof, in higher education. The comparison of academics to “snake oil salesmen” of the past is the central focus of this presentation. The presentation also analyzes the issues of integrity and collegiality in the three traditional areas of academics’ professional lives: teaching, research, and service.

Impact Of An Adherence Program On The Health And Outlook Of Hiv-Infected Patients Failing Antiretroviral Therapy, Michael F. Parry, Pamela Wright, Julie G. Stewart, Gavin Mcleod, James Tucker, Amy R. Weinberg
Nursing Faculty Publications
Background: We prospectively studied the impact of an adherence counselor on the outcome of patients failing antiretroviral therapy because of nonadherence. Methods: Forty-six patients, identified as chronically nonadherent were enrolled. Individual attention was provided using the information, motivation and behavioral methodology. HIV RNA (viral load, in copies/mL), CD4 count (in cells/[mm.sup.3]), and body weight before and after the adherence counselor were measured. Qualitative outcome and patient satisfaction were assessed by deidentified third-party interviews. Results: Over half completed at least 1 year; only 8 patients were lost to follow-up. Mean CD4 counts increased significantly (P < .05) for completers at 6 and 12 months. Viral loads decreased between baseline and 6 months. Most clients reported subjective benefit from working with the adherence counselor. Conclusion: Although few clients showed complete virologic suppression, the value of an adherence counselor was validated. Longer term adherence programs should be evaluated.

The Principles Of The Proclamation: Ten Years Of Help, Richard G. Wilkins
BYU Studies
On September 23, 1995, while presiding at the first general Relief Society meeting held since he was sustained as prophet, seer, revelator, and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Gordon B. Hinckley read “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” The Proclamation was prefaced by these remarks:
With so much of sophistry that is passed off as truth, with so much of deception concerning standards and values, with so much of allurement and enticement to take on the slow stain of the world, we have felt to warn and forewarn. In furtherance of this, we …
Classic Or New Monopsony? Searching For Evidence In Nursing Labor Markets, Barry T. Hirsch, Edward J. Schumacher
Classic Or New Monopsony? Searching For Evidence In Nursing Labor Markets, Barry T. Hirsch, Edward J. Schumacher
Health Care Administration Faculty Research
The market for registered nurses (RNs) is often offered as an example of “classic” monopsony, while a “new” monopsony literature emphasizes that firm labor supply is upward sloping independent of market structure. Using data from multiple sources, we explore the relationship between nursing wages in hospitals and measures of classic and new monopsony. Wage level analysis fails to provide support for classic monopsony, the relative wages of RNs in 240 U.S. labor markets being largely uncorrelated with hospital system concentration. Longitudinal analysis shows nursing wages declining with increases in hospital concentration. We interpret these results as providing support for classic …

A Review By Mike Klassen Of The Rise Of The Creative Class, By Richard Florida, Mike Klassen
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Visits to most tiny towns in the U.S. Midwest are for me, a Kansas boy raised in a town of fewer than 300 souls, depressing. Empty streets and vacant retail spaces signify a local economy that has hit the wall - a far cry from the vibrant commercial district of my boyhood, which included our own family-owned mercantile. But then I visited Fairfield, Iowa. Here, I found an old familiar small town "buzz," plied by ethnic restaurants, art galleries, assorted retail venues, and an ethnically diverse population that rivals most U.S. cities - in short, a town with imagination. I …
