Wireless Technology And Its Application In Wireless Local Area Networks Using The Ieee 802.11 Standards, Philip Curneen
Theses
This research thesis examines the area of wireless communication and its use in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). It examines the Spread Spectrum methods of Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) used in WLANs. The International Governing body, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) have devised standards and protocols called 802.11 to be used as guidelines for semiconductor chip and WLAN equipment manufacturers. These protocols have been adopted in implementing WLANs. Their specifications, which address data rates, bandwidth, power requirements, quality of service, spectrum management and security, are discussed in this thesis.

The Incidence And Cost Of Job Loss In The Ukrainian Labor Market, Hartmut Lehmann, Norberto Pignatti, Jonathan Wadsworth
The Incidence And Cost Of Job Loss In The Ukrainian Labor Market, Hartmut Lehmann, Norberto Pignatti, Jonathan Wadsworth
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We examine the effects of economic transition on the pattern and costs of worker displacement in Ukraine, using the Ukrainian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (ULMS) for the years 1992 to 2002. Displacement rates in the Ukrainian labor market average between 3.4 and 4.8 percent of employment, roughly in line with levels typically observed in several Western economies, but considerably larger than in Russia. The characteristics of displaced workers are similar to those displaced in the West, in so far as displacement is concentrated on the less skilled. Around one third of displaced workers find re-employment immediately while the majority continues into …

Intrauterine Artificial Insemination In The Pig: The Techniques, The Applications And The Limitations, Tuempong Wongtawan, Peerapong Samransarp, Padet Tummaruk
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This review aims to update information on the success of intra-uterine and deep intra-uterine insemination in the pig. Three artificial insemination (AI) techniques in pigs included conventional AI (semen is deposited intra cervically), intra-uterine insemination (IUI) and deep intra-uterine insemination (DIUI). With conventional AI, it has been shown that more than 90% of spermatozoa are lose before reaching the oviducts. Therefore, new techniques for AI were developed in order to maximize the use of boar semen and to reduce semen backflow, which can reduce pregnancy rates. The advantages of intra-uterine and deep intra-uterine insemination include a reduction in the number …

Autogenous Ilial Grafting Of Mandibles In Dogs, Chanin Kalpravidh, Atichat Brahmasa, Sumolya Kanchanapangka, Marissak Kalpravidh
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
An autogenous ilial graft was experimentally used for grafting the mandibles of 6 mixed-breed dogs, aged 1 to 5 years. To prepare the recipient bed, the mandibular shaft, under the fourth premolar tooth, was cut 2 cm deep and removed with the tooth. An ilial graft, the same size as the excised mandibular shaft, was harvested from the dorsal iliac crest of the same dog. The graft was then seated in the recipient bed and fixed to the mandible by a plastic bone plate and screws. Bone union was evaluated radiographically and histologically. The grafted sites of all dogs were …

The Detection Of Pathogenic Leptospira Species Using A Polymerase Chain Reaction Test, Alongkorn Amonsin, Thanis Dumrongwatanapokin, Chailai Koowatananukul, Somathat Wongsawang
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Pathogenic Leptospira species cause leptospirosis in animals and humans. Bacterial culture and the serological identification of leptospires are constrined by being time consuming and labor intensive. Oligonucleotide primers complementary to the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence of pathogenic leptospires were designed to amplify the 343 bp fragment. The primers were specific to pathogenic Leptospira species and did not amplify either non-pathogenic leptospires or common bacteria found in urine. This developed PCR assay allows the rapid identification of pathogenic leptospires from rodent urine, with high sensitivity and specificity.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
In this anatomical study, the majority of the brain of a newborn Asian elephant was supplied with blood by the cerebral arterial circle, which lies on the ventral surface of the brain and completely encircles the optic chiasma, the tuber cinereum and the interpeduncular fossa. It was formed by the left and right internal carotid arteries and the most rostral branches of the basilar artery. The internal carotid arteries were the incoming branches that go directly to the cerebral arterial circle, in front of the optic chiasma, and are divided into rostral cerebral arteries and caudal communicating arteries. In this …

Nursing Students' Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Pain And Pain Management, Ruth L. Schaffler Phd
Nursing Students' Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Pain And Pain Management, Ruth L. Schaffler Phd
Dissertations
Pain is a universal human experience and is a primary reason people seek health care; however, undertreatment of pain has been reported in the literature as a significant clinical problem for more than three decades. Researchers have concluded that nurses have inadequate knowledge of pain assessment, are misinformed about opioids, and have inappropriate attitudes about pain and pain management that lead to the undertreatment of pain. One question is whether those misconceptions are acquired in nursing school or whether they are present when students enroll in nursing programs. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the attitudes regarding …

Are Successful Applicants To The Priesthood Psychologically Healthy?, Thomas G. Plante, Arianna Aldridge, Christina Louie
Psychology
The current investigation evaluated psychological and personality profiles of successful applicants to a major Roman Catholic religious order. The MMPI-2 and 16PF were administered to 68 applicants between 1990 and 2004 who subsequently entered seminary. Results indicate that these applicants to the priesthood were generally well-adjusted as well as being socially responsible, interpersonally sensitive and sociable. Findings also suggest some tendency for defensiveness and repression. Furthermore, dealing with perceived negative impulses such as anger and hostility may also be a concern for many of these men.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the bladder (LELCA) is an uncommon neoplasm of the urinary bladder and up till now only 49 cases have been reported in the English literature. It is imperative to distinguish between lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma and malignant lymphoma as primary bladder lymphoma is extremely rare. We report a case of a 55 year old lady who presented with the complaint of burning micturition and gross hematuria for the past 5 months. There were no other known comorbids. Pelvic ultrasound was normal. Cystoscopy showed a 4x4 cm sessile mass in the bladder. Histopathological examination was consistent with the diagnosis of …

Balik Terrorism: The Return Of The Abu Sayyaf, Zachary Abuza Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author warns that despite the regeneration of the ASG as a bonafide terrorist organization, the primary security threat confronting the GRP comes from the Communist Party of the Philippines and their armed wing, the New People's Army. To that end, the GRP will focus on the ASG and MILF in as much as they expect it to garner U.S. materiel support and assistance. He advises U.S. Defense department and policymakers regarding institutional frailties of the GRP and institutional corruption within the Philippine armed forces. While the author suggests that training continue, he cautions about being drawn into a quagmire. …

Declines in greater sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) productivity and population numbers throughout their range demand a better understanding of how nutrition influences sage grouse populations. During March and April 1999–2001, blood samples were collected from 158 female (73 adult, 85 yearling), free-ranging, prelaying, greater sage grouse from an area in northwestern Nevada, USA, and southeastern Oregon, USA. These blood samples were evaluated to establish normal blood values for sage grouse and ascertain if certain blood parameters, as indices of nutrition, are useful for predicting if sage grouse hens would raise at least one chick to 1 August. Results of logistic …

Given the similar interests of United Way organizations and universities in planning, implementation, and evaluation of human services, the two social institutions could be extensively and effectively partnering with one another. However, there is little documentation that such cooperative efforts are taking place. This article describes one such collaboration in Lincoln, Nebraska. The purpose of the article is to show the potential of such collaboration to improve community-wide coordination and outcomes by following the principles of a community-engagement model, to generate more effective use of evaluative tools that can assist in developing evidence-based practices in community planning, and to connect …

Extraneural Prion Neuroinvasion Without Lymphoreticular System Infection, Jason C. Bartz, Crista Dejoia, Tammy Tucker, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard A. Bessen
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
While prion infection of the lymphoreticular system (LRS) is necessary for neuroinvasion in many prion diseases, in bovine spongiform encephalopathy and atypical cases of sheep scrapie there is evidence to challenge that LRS infection is required for neuroinvasion. Here we investigated the role of prion infection of LRS tissues in neuroinvasion following extraneural inoculation with the HY and DY strains of the transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) agent. DY TME agent infectivity was not detected in spleen or lymph nodes following intraperitoneal inoculation and clinical disease was not observed following inoculation into the peritoneum or lymph nodes, or after oral ingestion. …

Hypothermia In Iranian Newborns. Incidence, Risk Factors And Related Complications, Farid Zayeri, Anoshirvan Kazemnejad, Mojtaba Ganjali, Gholamreza Babaei, Navid Khanafshar, Fatemeh Nayeri
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence rate and factors associated with hypothermia in Iranian newborns and to discover the effect of hypothermia on neonatal morbidity and mortality. METHODS: We selected a random sample of 1952 neonates using a multistage sampling technique from February 2004 to February 2005 in University Teaching Hospitals in Iran. We measured repeatedly at different time points the rectal temperature of these newborns. At each time of measurement, those with rectal temperature <36OC were considered as hypothermic. RESULTS: The obtained results showed that approximately one third of newborns became hypothermic immediately after birth. In addition, the regression analysis revealed that low birth weights, prematures, low apgar scores, infants of multiple pregnancies and those who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation had higher risk for being hypothermic. It was also found that hypothermia increases the risk of metabolic acidosis, jaundice, respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, pulmonary hemorrhage and death, regardless of the newborn9s weight and gestational age. CONCLUSION: There is an urgent need to train mothers and all levels of neonatal care staff to control this health problem in our country.
