Semiparametric Estimation In General Repeated Measures Problems, Xihong Lin, Raymond J. Carroll Sep 2005

Semiparametric Estimation In General Repeated Measures Problems, Xihong Lin, Raymond J. Carroll

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper considers a wide class of semiparametric problems with a parametric part for some covariate effects and repeated evaluations of a nonparametric function. Special cases in our approach include marginal models for longitudinal/clustered data, conditional logistic regression for matched case-control studies, multivariate measurement error models, generalized linear mixed models with a semiparametric component, and many others. We propose profile-kernel and backfitting estimation methods for these problems, derive their asymptotic distributions, and show that in likelihood problems the methods are semiparametric efficient. While generally not true, with our methods profiling and backfitting are asymptotically equivalent. We also consider pseudolikelihood methods …

Exhibition and Program Catalogs

IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the why …

Migrating Latinas And The Grief Process, Daiana Anahir Gonzalez Sep 2005

Migrating Latinas And The Grief Process, Daiana Anahir Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study examines the migratory experience of immigrant Latina married women. It looks at their experience from both an individual and a systemic perspective. It compares their experience to that of grief due to bereavement using Parkes' theory of the grief process. This research also presents findings as to the effects of migration on the marital system. Analysis of interview data provided by 12 Latin American women who resided in the United States ranging from 2 years to 10 years, allowed a comparison between the experience of these women and the grief process theory. The findings of the study …

A Drosophila Deg/Enac Channel Subunit Is Required For Male Response To Female Pheromones, Heping Lin, Kevin J. Mann, Elena Starostina, Ronald D. Kinser, Claudio W. Pikielny

Dartmouth Scholarship

Odorants and pheromones as well as sweet- and bitter-tasting small molecules are perceived through activation of G protein-coupled chemosensory receptors. In contrast, gustatory detection of salty and sour tastes may involve direct gating of sodium channels of the DEG/ENaC family by sodium and hydrogen ions, respectively. We have found that ppk25, a Drosophila melanogaster gene encoding a DEG/ENaC channel subunit, is expressed at highest levels in the male appendages responsible for gustatory and olfactory detection of female pheromones: the legs, wings, and antennae. Mutations in the ppk25 gene reduce or even abolish male courtship response to females in the dark, …

Revised Adult Treatment Panel Iii Guidelines And Cardiovascular Disease Mortality In Men Attending A Preventive Medical Clinic, Chris I. Ardern, Peter T. Katzmarzyk, Ian Janssen, Timothy S. Church, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Background - National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines recommended therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) and drug therapy to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. These guidelines have been revised recently (ATP III-R); however, the risk of CVD mortality within each intervention window and the effects of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and metabolic syndrome on CVD mortality within the framework of the guidelines are unknown.

Methods and Results - Risk factor and CRF data from 19,125 men (aged 20 to 79 years) who attended a preventive medical clinic between 1979 and 1995 were used. Mortality follow-up was completed until December 31, …

The Aesthetics Of Lawrence V. Texas' Moral Vision, Courtney Megan Cahill Sep 2005

The Aesthetics Of Lawrence V. Texas' Moral Vision, Courtney Megan Cahill

ExpressO

This Article clarifies a doctrinal issue that has remained open to debate by both legal scholars and lower courts since the Supreme Court’s 2003 decision in Lawrence v. Texas—namely, whether the Court repudiated morality as a legitimate state interest for lawmaking—by approaching that opinion as a poetic conflict or dialectic between two aesthetic modes, the line and unbounded space or transcendence. Unlike conventional legal analysis, which focuses on what the text of an opinion explicitly says—what it holds and how it gets there—an interpretive strategy that approaches Lawrence in poetic terms and that pays close attention to the stylistic interplay …

The Constitutionally Inspired Approaches To Police Accountability For Violence Against Women In The U.S. And South Africa: Conservation Versus Transformation, Christopher J. Roederer Sep 2005

The Constitutionally Inspired Approaches To Police Accountability For Violence Against Women In The U.S. And South Africa: Conservation Versus Transformation, Christopher J. Roederer

ExpressO

In the summer of 2005, the United States Supreme Court in Castle Rock v. Gonzales and the South African Constitutional Court in N.K. v. Minister of Safety & Security overturned decisions from their appellate courts. N.K. drew on the Constitutional Court decision in Carmichele v. Minister of Safety & Security. All three were torts cases involving the duties of the police, their accountability to the public, and rights of women to be free from violence, and each depended on the respective court’s interpretation of its constitution for resolution. This article focuses on the comparison, or rather, the sharp contrast between, …

Origin Of Enantioselection In Chiral Alcohol Oxidation Catalyzed By Pd[(–)-Sparteine]Cl2, J. A. Mueller, Anne Cowell, Bert D. Chandler, M. S. Sigman

Chemistry Faculty Research

A kinetic investigation into the origin of enantioselectivity for the Pd[(–)-sparteine]Cl2-catalyzed aerobic oxidative kinetic resolution (OKR) is reported. A mechanism to account for a newly discovered chloride dissociation from Pd[(–)-sparteine]Cl2 prior to alcohol binding is proposed. The mechanism includes (1) chloride dissociation from Pd[(–)-sparteine]Cl2 to form cationic Pd(–)-sparteine]Cl, (2) alcohol binding, (3) deprotonation of Pd-bound alcohol to form a Pd-alkoxide, and (4) β-hydride elimination of Pd–alkoxide to form ketone product and a Pd–hydride. Utilizing the addition of (–)-sparteine HCl to control the [Cl–] and [H+] and the resulting derived rate law, …
