How Family Religious Involvement Benefits Adults, Youth, And Children And Strengthens Families, David C. Dollahite, Jennifer Y. Thatcher Sep 2005

How Family Religious Involvement Benefits Adults, Youth, And Children And Strengthens Families, David C. Dollahite, Jennifer Y. Thatcher

Faculty Publications

A growing body of empirical research demonstrates that a family’s religious involvement directly benefits adults, children and youth in many ways. Divorce rates are lower and marital satisfaction and quality scores highest among religiously involved couples. Religious practices are linked with family satisfaction, closer father-child relationships, and closer parent-child relationships. There is less domestic violence among more religious couples and religious parents are less likely to abuse or yell at their children. Religious involvement promotes involved and responsible fathering and is associated with more involved mothering. Greater religiosity in parents and youth is associated with a variety of protective factors …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A novel filarial serine protease inhibitor (SPI) from the human parasitic nematode Onchocerca volvulus, Ov-SPI-1, was identified through the analysis of a molting third-stage larvae expressed sequence tag dataset. Subsequent analysis of the expressed sequence tag datasets of O. volvulus and other filariae identified four other members of this family. These proteins are related to the low molecular weight SPIs originally isolated from Ascaris suumwhere they are believed to protect the parasite from host intestinal proteases. The two Ov-spi transcripts are up-regulated in the molt- ing larvae and adult stages of the development of the parasite. Recombinant Ov-SPI-1 is an …

The Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships: Comparative Institutional Analysis, Contested Social Goals, And Strategic Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer Sep 2005

The Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships: Comparative Institutional Analysis, Contested Social Goals, And Strategic Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer

ExpressO

The emerging field of comparative institutional analysis (CIA) has much to offer public policy analysts. However, the failure of CIA to address the dynamic process through which social goals are articulated limits the scope of its application to the largely prescriptive pronouncements of legal scholars. By examining the movement for equal recognition of same-sex relationships, this Essay builds on the basic observations of CIA and introduces a new dimension, namely the dynamic process through which social goals are articulated and social change is pursued. The acknowledgment that the production of social goals involves institutional behavior, as well as multiple sites …

Accident Law For Egalitarians, Ronen Avraham, Issa Kohler-Hausmann Sep 2005

Accident Law For Egalitarians, Ronen Avraham, Issa Kohler-Hausmann

ExpressO

The article goes back to the basics. It questions the fairness of our current tort law regime and the philosophical underpinnings advanced in its defense, a theory with its roots in Aristotelian thought, called corrective justice. We critique tort law and corrective justice from a standpoint of egalitarian fairness, inspired by distributive justice philosophers such as John Rawls and Ronald Dworkin. Our argument is that the strict theoretical and institutional insulation of tort law—and the normative theory underlying it, corrective justice—from other institutions and principles of justice, namely distributive and retributive justice, gives rise to deleterious consequences in terms of …
