ETSU Today [magazine]
That a time of change, excitement and tremendous energy at ETSU! In fact, I consider this to be one of the most rewarding years of my professional life. It was just a year ago when I introduced our intention to create a College of Pharmacy for ETSU. Now we are within a year of seeing our first class of 65 pharmacy students begin their studies. The campus and community response has been unprecedented. With gifts ranging from anonymous $20 bills to six-figure corporate commitments, we now have in hand well over $6 million for the new college. From the inspirational …

Collapsing Liberalism's Public/Private Divide: Voldemort's War On The Family, Danaya C. Wright
UF Law Faculty Publications
As a legal scholar setting out to explore themes of law in Harry Potter, I am acutely aware of the absence of family law conflicts in these different family structures and relationships. Rowling's obvious fascination with different family structures and her relatively strong sense of an isolated, private sphere that is free of state intervention seems in keeping with traditional liberal values of the public/private divide. Yet her rejection of state interference in the private sphere of the family does not correspond to an autonomous state that is focused on the public sphere. Where liberalism separates the private world of …

Effect Of Parity On Bone Mineral Density Among Postmenopausal Saudi Arabian Women, Mir Sadat-Ali, Ibrahim Al-Habdan, Abdul-Aziz Al-Mulhim, Abdallah Y. El-Hassan
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis and osteopenia among postmenopausal Saudi Arabian women are common to the extent of over 60%. Pregnancy, multiparity and prolonged lactation are suggested as factors modifying negatively in the development of osteoporosis. Earlier reports from the institution indicated a beneficial role of multiparity in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO). We conducted this study to measure the effect of parity on bone mineral density (BMD) measurement of lumbar spine and the upper femur. METHODS: We conducted this prospective study at King Fahd Hospital of the University, College of Medicine, King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia, between January 2002 and June 2003. This …

House Prices In The Measurement Of Inflation: An Application Using Irish Data, Róisín O'Sullivan
House Prices In The Measurement Of Inflation: An Application Using Irish Data, Róisín O'Sullivan
Economics: Faculty Publications
This paper illustrates the impact on Irish inflation of including a house-price series with the current components of the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP). We construct a dynamic factor index of inflation that weights the individual price series according to the strength of their signal about the common trend in prices. As the relatively noisy house-price series attracts a weight of only 3 per cent in the index, the inclusion of house prices in this way does not hugely alter the recent pattern of inflation for Ireland, despite house prices exhibiting much stronger growth on average than the current …

Individual And Team Behaviors: Exploring The Role Of Esprit De Corps, Drue K. Schuler, Paula S. Weber
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
As the traditional forms of organization migrate to increasing use of team structures, the antecedents, consequences, and interaction between individual and team behaviors becomes more important. This research explores the concept of esprit de corps, attempts to provide a definition grounded in several diverse research streams, and suggests that esprit de corps serves as a bridge between individual and team behaviors. A conceptual model is provided and propositions for future research related to the model are discussed.
The Effects Of Government Reimbursement On Hospital Costs:Some Empirical Evidence From Washington State, Dan Friesner, Robert Rosenman, Matthew Mcpherson
The Effects Of Government Reimbursement On Hospital Costs:Some Empirical Evidence From Washington State, Dan Friesner, Robert Rosenman, Matthew Mcpherson
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
We use a panel of hospitals from Washington state to examine the impact of government reimbursement on a provider’s costs. We find that providers change their relative patient mix when Medicare and Medicaid lower reimbursement rates. On a percentage change basis, the magnitudes of these changes are small; however, the overall economic impacts are quite large. Additionally, our findings indicate that a number of other factors significantly influence a provider’s costs, including patient demographics, initial illness severity and input market conditions facing the firm.
We thank two anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments. We also thank William Greene for valuable …

E- International Hospital Website Strategy Comparisons, Jana R. Minifie, Judy Dietert, Bill Middlebrook
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
This manuscript evaluates 20 American and 20 non-American hospital websites using a Hospital E-Marketing Strategy Life-Cycle model. These hospital websites were initially evaluated and categorized using the model in 1999. These same hospital websites were revisited in 2004 to determine if their initial stage had changed over the years and if hospital websites did indeed follow the Life-Cycle model. Any changes in a hospital’s website marketing strategy between years are also evaluated.

Nurturing The Spirit At Work: Impact On Work Unit Performance, Dennis Duchon, Donde Ashmos Plowman
Nurturing The Spirit At Work: Impact On Work Unit Performance, Dennis Duchon, Donde Ashmos Plowman
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Workplace spirituality is defined as a workplace that recognizes that employees have an inner life that nourishes and is nourished by meaningful work that takes place in the context of community. This definition, based on three fundamental spiritual needs, has implications for how leaders can enhance work unit performance by nurturing the spirit at work. In an exploratory study of six work units in a large hospital system we used an instrument that measures workplace spirituality. The results led to propositions concerning the effect of work unit spirituality on work unit performance and the relationship between work unit spirituality and …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Objectives: To investigate the relative pathogenicity of Candida albicans treated with subinhibitory concentrations of fluconazole in a mouse model of disseminated candidiasis. Previous studies indicate that these cells secrete 10 times more farnesol than do untreated cells. In our usage, subinhibitory means a concentration which causes a prominent decrease in turbidity but still allows some cell growth. Methods: C. albicans A72 cells were grown overnight in 0–5.0 mM fluconazole, washed, and inoculated in mice by tail vein injection. Groups of 15 or 16 mice were injected with 1.3 • 106cells and mortality was recorded for 7 days post-inoculation. …
