A Preliminary Test Of A Student-Centered Intervention On Increasing Physical Activity In Underserved Adolescents, Dawn K. Wilson, Alexandra E. Evans, Joel Williams, Gary Mixon, John R. Sirard, Russell R. Pate Oct 2005

A Preliminary Test Of A Student-Centered Intervention On Increasing Physical Activity In Underserved Adolescents, Dawn K. Wilson, Alexandra E. Evans, Joel Williams, Gary Mixon, John R. Sirard, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

Background - Previous studies have shown that choice and self-initiated behavior changes are important for increasing intrinsic motivation and physical activity (PA), however, little of this research has focused on underserved adolescents.

Purpose - This study examined the effects of a 4-week student-centered intervention on increasing PA in underserved adolescents.

Methods - Twenty-eight students in the intervention school were matched (on race, percentage on free or reduced-price lunch program, gender, and age) with 20 students from another school who served as the comparison group (30 girls, 18 boys; ages 10-12 years; 83% African American; 83% on free or reduced-price lunch). …

Editing Military History In The Twenty-First Century, Edward G. Lengel Oct 2005

Editing Military History In The Twenty-First Century, Edward G. Lengel

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Military historians are not usually accused of worrying about trendiness. More typically they seem like stodgy traditionalists, scoffing at postmodernism and its various spin-offs and fantasizing about putting Foucault in the path of a cannonball at Gettysburg and shouting, "Deconstruct this!" At academic conferences and in university departments, military historians are outsiders: stubbornly following tales of great battles and dead white males while their presumably more "relevant" colleagues don red berets and scribble manifestos in smoke-filled rooms. Documentary editors who work in military history are, if anything, doubly outsiders: fearing either to venture into social history, or to join traditional …

Trials And Tribulations: As Found In The Journals Of Samuel Kirkland, Christine Sternberg Patrick Oct 2005

Trials And Tribulations: As Found In The Journals Of Samuel Kirkland, Christine Sternberg Patrick

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

By day I edit the papers of George Washington, one of those increasingly popular dead white men. But on nights and weekends I spend my time with Samuel Kirkland, a not-so-popular dead white man whom I would classify as above-average. I was first introduced to Kirkland in the 1980s, and shortly thereafter I made him the topic of my dissertation. Although some might describe him as a "dour Presbyterian," I find him fascinating.

By now I am sure that most readers are wondering, who is Samuel Kirkland? and, why is he above-average? So let me briefly answer these questions before …

Language Skills Of Elementary-Aged Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Gregory Benner Oct 2005

Language Skills Of Elementary-Aged Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Gregory Benner

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

A cross-sectional design was used to assess the language skills and prevalence of language disorders among 84 randomly selected public school children (K-5) receiving special education services for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The mean receptive language standard score fell in the nonclinical range, whereas the mean total and expressive standard scores fell in the clinical range. The prevalence rates of total, expressive, and receptive disorders among children with EBD were 54%, 55%, and 42%, respectively. Approximately two-thirds of children experienced a language disorder (i.e., total, expressive, and/or receptive). Half of those experiencing a language disorder met clinical criteria in …

In Praise Of Silence, Bebe Nickolai

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I thought I was ready for her, a sophomore in my honors rhetoric class. I have been teaching the honors rhetoric class for almost twenty years. Yet every semester I revise my syllabus for the class as I realize that honors students can handle even bigger challenges—more difficult readings, more demanding writing assignments.

Honors: When Value-Added Is Really Added Value, Jacqueline Kelleher Oct 2005

Honors: When Value-Added Is Really Added Value, Jacqueline Kelleher

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Sometimes I look at the responsibilities and demands placed on me in my current position and cannot believe I haven’t cracked up yet. In this era of accountability and “show me the data,” institutional assessment directors like me are constantly bombarded with challenges that require quick, critical, divergent thinking, analytical reasoning, effective speaking, and, to some extent, creative writing. As both a professor and administrator at a state university, I live and breathe producing evidence that we as an institution are having an impact on student learning. When I was growing up, I never imagined I would end up being …

Ultra High-Speed Sorting, James F. Leary Oct 2005

Ultra High-Speed Sorting, James F. Leary

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Background: Cell sorting has a history dating back approximately 40 years. The main limitation has been that, although flow cytometry is a science, cell sorting has been an art during most of this time. Recent advances in assisting technologies have helped to decrease the amount of expertise necessary to perform sorting. Methods: Droplet-based sorting is based on a controlled disturbance of a jet stream dependent on surface tension. Sorting yield and purity are highly dependent on stable jet break-off position. System pressures and orifice diameters dictate the number of droplets per second, which is the sort rate limiting step because …

Becoming Neighbors Or Remaining Strangers? Latinos And Residential Segregation In The Heartland, Ana-Mari Gonzalez Wahl, Steven Gunkel, Bennie Shobe, Jr. Oct 2005

Becoming Neighbors Or Remaining Strangers? Latinos And Residential Segregation In The Heartland, Ana-Mari Gonzalez Wahl, Steven Gunkel, Bennie Shobe, Jr.

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Debate persists about the dynamics of segregation and their consequences for Latinos as well as others. This paper draws from the most recent census to examine these dynamics and their consequences in three midwestern cities: Omaha, Lincoln, and Lexington. By shifting the focus to new centers of Latino population growth, we clarify the complexities of Hispanic segregation across the United States. Our findings extend and inform previous debates in several ways. Using the index of dissimilarity, we find evidence of rising segregation in Omaha and Lincoln while Lexington appears a model of integration, at least at first glance. Class factors, …

Review Of Revenge Of The Windigo: The Construction Of The Mind And Mental Health Of North American Aboriginal Peoples By James B. Waldram, Vicki Smye Oct 2005

Review Of Revenge Of The Windigo: The Construction Of The Mind And Mental Health Of North American Aboriginal Peoples By James B. Waldram, Vicki Smye

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In Revenge of the Windigo, James Waldram provides an incisive critique of the use and abuse of culture in mental health theory and practice. In my view, one of the most important contributions of this book relates to Waldram's notice of the often unexamined and sometimes cavalier use of "Aboriginality" and related research methodological practices, including the uncritical appropriation of terminology in the field of Aboriginal mental health. I was particularly drawn to Waldram's attention to ideological positioning in which complex ideas are reduced to simplistic binary forms, for example, the use of the concepts of "traditional" and "holism," …

Family Predictors Of Well-Functioning Midwestern Adolescents, Douglas A. Abbott, Scott Hall, William Meredith Oct 2005

Family Predictors Of Well-Functioning Midwestern Adolescents, Douglas A. Abbott, Scott Hall, William Meredith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The purpose of our project was to investigate well-functioning adolescents to identify familial influences that may account for their positive developmental outcomes and healthy life choices. A family systems perspective was used to conceptualize this project. More than 300 teenagers were surveyed about family influences on adolescent outcomes. Results indicated that teen religiosity, parental warmth, parental monitoring, and a low occurrence of stressful life events were related to teen depression, participation in risky behaviors, and parental-teen conflict. General conclusions were drawn about the importance of the family environment on teen behavior and the usefulness of a systems point of view …

Review Of 5 Leadership Essentials For Women: Developing Your Ability To Make Things Happen Compiler Lisa Clark, Clarissa M. Craig

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Because much of the scholarship on leadership has been constructed using male norms (Nidiffer, 2001), there is added attraction when the essentials of successful leadership are targeted for women. 5 Leadership Essentials for Women: Developing Your Ability to Make Things Happen addresses five leadership skills that, according to the "compiler" [sic] Linda Clark, are designed with women's needs in mind. The leadership essentials explored are communication, relationship essentials, time management, group building, and conflict management.

African American Female College And University Presidents: Career Path To The Presidency, Sandra Jackson, Sandra Harris

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The purpose of this study was to investigate the career paths and educational preparation of African American female college presidents. Forty-three of the 59 college presidents responded to a Likert-type survey. Findings indicated that African American female college presidents were more likely to hold a doctorate in education and came to the presidency from a variety of positions, often from other institutions or outside of education.

Women In History--Dr. Susan Laflesche Picotte: American Physician And Heroine, Bernita L. Krumm

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Susan LaFlesche Picotte walked in two cultures and, by any measure, served as a model for both. She overcame incredible obstacles to become the first Native American woman doctor in the United States. Most estimates agree that in 25 years she treated every member of the Omaha tribe. She dedicated her life to the service of others; she is without a doubt the true American heroine. References

Shining Lonely Stars? Career Patterns Of Rural Texas Female Administrators, Dawn C. Wallin Oct 2005

Shining Lonely Stars? Career Patterns Of Rural Texas Female Administrators, Dawn C. Wallin

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This paper stems from research that examined the impact of the rural context upon the career patterns of women educational administrators in rural public school districts in the state of Texas. The study examined two pertinent issues for women in rural education: (a) the nature of rural communities and its relationship to female career paths in educational administration, and (b) barriers and supports faced by female administrators in the rural context. The purpose of this paper will be to outline the findings of the study in relation to the emergent issues for rural female administrators.

Post-Crawford: Time To Liberalize The Substantive Admissibility Of A Testifying Witness's Prior Consistent Statements, Lynn Mclain

All Faculty Scholarship

The United States Supreme Court's 1995 decision in Tome v. United States has read Federal Rule of Evidence 801(d)(1)(B) to prevent the prosecution's offering a child abuse victim's prior consistent statements as substantive evidence. As a result of that decision, the statements will also be inadmissible even for the limited purpose of helping to evaluate the credibility of a child, if there is a serious risk that the out-of-court statements would be used on the issue of guilt or innocence.

Moreover, after the Court's March 2004 decision in Crawford v. Washington, which redesigned the landscape of Confrontation Clause analysis, other …

Description And Evaluation Of An Interactive Jeopardy Game Designed To Foster Self-Assessment, Denise Bender, K.E. Randall

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Basic clinical skill courses require students to progress from early information acquisition toward the ability to synthesize and modify the information for various clinical scenarios. In our program, graduate physical and occupational therapy students obtain practice with this clinical reasoning process during a classroom version of the Jeopardy! game. This interactive game show format offers a low-risk environment that encourages student participation. The students divide into two interdisciplinary teams, and each team elects four persons to formally answer the questions. These spokespersons take turns selecting a category of questions. Since all students are assigned to a team, even those not …

A Systematic Review On The Role Of Diet And Nutritional Supplements For Prevention Of Cardiovascular Diseases, Yap-Hang Chan, Hung-Fat Tse, Sheung-Wai Li, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

According to the diet-heart hypothesis, dietary factors play a pivotal role in atherogenesis. Modulation of the diet has therefore been considered a means to achieve better cardiovascular health and a major subject of public health importance. Five major types of diet have been identified: the low-carbohydrate diet, low glycemic index diet, very-low-fat diet, the Mediterranean diet and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. Clinical studies have shown that none of these diets are universally efficacious. The results from various clinical trials on the use of diet to prevent cardiovascular diseases are commonly conflicting due to unadjusted caloric intake …
