Women And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Michelle Kahan
Women And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Michelle Kahan
Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
Ninety percent of the 1,100 families who utilize the state's shelter system annually are headed by women, as are approximately 20% of the 19,000-29,000 individuals who stay in Massachusetts emergency shelters each year. In total, a minimum of 5,000 women and 2,000 children annually stay in Massachusetts homeless shelters.
These figures do not include over 3,000 women in domestic violence shelter (60% of whom enter shelter with their children), not the 50% of families seeking emergency shelter who are turned away each year. Over a period of three years, women also make up a quarter of Boston's 1,400 street dwellers: …
Women, Migration, And The Body-Less Spirit Of Capitalist Patriarchy, Mechthild Hart
Women, Migration, And The Body-Less Spirit Of Capitalist Patriarchy, Mechthild Hart
Journal of International Women's Studies
The continuously expanding global free trade in domestic and sex workers intensifies old capitalist-patriarchal forms of extracting women’s emotional, physical, and sexual labor. The patriarchal dream of seizing control of impure, unruly life has now entered its neoliberal stage, exemplified by money begetting money in the virtual sphere of financial speculation, and by biotechnology’s promise to create a world that is no longer in need of impure female mothering bodies. The very nature of the work associated with unruly life delivers, however, a major blow to the patriarchal vision of a totally controlled, purified, body-less world. Imported female ‘servants of …

Empowerment Beyond Numbers: Substantiating Women’S Political Participation, Bilkis Vissandjee, Alisha Apale, Saskia Wieringa, Shelly Abdool, Sophie Dupéré
Journal of International Women's Studies
From our households and into our communities, from independent States to international governing bodies, gender operates as a construct of evolving aspects of women’s identities and is a medium through which expectations are prescribed, social norms are formed and power relations are negotiated. Gender constructs that impede women’s access to the public spheres of society diminish the possibility for equitable and empowering life conditions. Of particular emphasis in this paper, facilitating women’s entry into political bodies across the world is also compromised by persistent obstacles in women’s opportunities in both political and private spheres of life.
Our research engages female …

Invertebrate And Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw Nature Park, Karl Koehler, Vanessa Artman
Invertebrate And Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw Nature Park, Karl Koehler, Vanessa Artman
Student Research
Our study focuses on the interaction between invertebrate abundance and the decomposition of leaf litter. The decomposition of leaf litter plays a major role in the nutrient cycling process, which is critical to the health of an ecosystem (Spurr and Barnes 1980). The dynamics between invertebrates and leaf litter are of particular importance because invertebrates are good indicators of the activity of the decomposer community. Abiotic factors such as soil pH and temperature are also important influences on decomposition rates (Petersen and Luxton 1982, Seastedt 1984). Our goal was to determine the nature of this interaction. Ultimately, this information could …

A Discretized Approach To Flexibly Fit Generalized Lambda Distributions To Data, Steve Su
A Discretized Approach To Flexibly Fit Generalized Lambda Distributions To Data, Steve Su
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
This article presents a flexible approach to fit statistical distribution to data. It optimizes the bin-width of data histogram to find a suitable generalized lambda distribution. In addition to the default optimization, this approach provides additional flexibility akin to the concepts of loess and kernel smoothing, which allow the users to determine the amount of details they would like to smooth over the data. The approach presented in this article will allow users to visually compare and choose the parameters of generalized lambda distribution that best suit their purposes of study.
Simulation Procedure In Periodic Cancer Screening Trials, Ioana Barnicescu, Ricolindo L. Cariño
Simulation Procedure In Periodic Cancer Screening Trials, Ioana Barnicescu, Ricolindo L. Cariño
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A general simulation procedure is described to validate model fitting algorithms for complex likelihood functions that are utilized in periodic cancer screening trials. Although screening programs have existed for a few decades, there are still many unsolved problems, such as how age or hormone affects the screening sensitivity, the sojourn time in the preclinical state, and the transition probability from diseasefree state to the preclinical state. Simulations are needed to check reliability or validity of the likelihood function combined with the associated effect functions. One bottleneck in the simulation procedure is the very time consuming calculations of the maximum likelihood …
The Influence Of Reliability On Four Rules For Determining The Number Of Components To Retain, Gibbs Y. Kanyongo
The Influence Of Reliability On Four Rules For Determining The Number Of Components To Retain, Gibbs Y. Kanyongo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Imperfectly reliable scores impact the performance of factor analytic procedures. A series of Monte Carlo studies was conducted to generate scores with known component structure from population matrices with varying levels of reliability. The scores were submitted to four procedures: Kaiser rule, scree plot, parallel analysis, and modified Horn’s parallel analysis to find if each procedure accurately determines the number of components at the different reliability levels. The performance of each procedure was judged by the percentage of the number of times that the procedure was correct and the mean components that each procedure extracted in each cell. Generally, the …
Corrections For Type I Error In Social Science Research: A Disconnect Between Theory And Practice, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric R. Spence
Corrections For Type I Error In Social Science Research: A Disconnect Between Theory And Practice, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric R. Spence
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Type I errors are a common problem in factorial ANOVA and ANOVA based analyses. Despite decades of literature offering solutions to the Type I error problems associated with multiple significance tests, simple solutions such as Bonferroni corrections have been largely ignored by social scientists. To examine this discontinuity between theory and practice, a content analysis was performed on 5 flagship social science journals. Results indicate that corrections for Type I error are seldom utilized, even in designs so complicated as to almost guarantee erroneous rejection of null hypotheses.

After Roper V. Simmons: Keeping Kids Out Of Adult Criminal Court, Ellen Marrus, Irene Merkel Rosenberg
After Roper V. Simmons: Keeping Kids Out Of Adult Criminal Court, Ellen Marrus, Irene Merkel Rosenberg
San Diego Law Review
When children kill, as they always have and probably always will, the state must juggle two distinct and oftentimes conflicting concerns: its police power and its parens patriae interest. These concerns are not, however, mutually exclusive. There is a delicate balance that must be maintained. Clearly, the state must incapacitate and punish children who commit serious criminal acts, but, as Simmons says, that does not mean that minors can be executed, nor, as the Authors maintain, be consigned to living death behind bars without any hope of respite. The legal system must somehow be adjusted for children.

The Comparative Catalyst: Reforming Graham V. Daimlerchrysler, Kevin Logan
San Diego Law Review
This Casenote examines the California Supreme Court's decision in Graham v. DaimlerChrysler concluding that the adoption of a stricter definition of "public interest" litigation and a comparative catalyst rule will serve to stem the flood of unproductive lawsuits in the high court's ill-conceived decision will otherwise unleash.
The Bottom Line On Board Diversity: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Business Rationales For Diversity On Corporate Boards, Lisa M. Fairfax
The Bottom Line On Board Diversity: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Business Rationales For Diversity On Corporate Boards, Lisa M. Fairfax
Faculty Scholarship
The Bottom Line on Board Diversity: A Cost Benefit Analysis of the Business Rationales for Diversity on Corporate Boards critically examines the business rationales for diversity in order to determine whether they can or should be used to encourage greater diversity on the boards of major corporations. The Article acknowledges the validity of some of the business rationales for diversity within corporations more generally, but questions whether those rationales apply with as much force in the context of corporate boards and the obligations board members undertake. On this point, the Article concludes that such rationales promise more, and in some …
Development Of Biological Reference Conditions Of Wadeable Streams In The Major Ecoregions And Subecoregions Of Georgia, Duncan L. Hughes
Development Of Biological Reference Conditions Of Wadeable Streams In The Major Ecoregions And Subecoregions Of Georgia, Duncan L. Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
One bioassessment tool available to resource managers to indicate NPS impairment of wadeable streams and rivers are multi-metric invertebrate indices. Such indices are assembled from metrics in broad categories that represent different aspects of community structure and function (e.g. richness, composition, tolerance/intolerance, feeding group, and habit). Indices must incorporate suites of metrics that are ecologically relevant, quantifiable, non-redundant, and that best individually discriminate between reference sites and impaired sites. More than 240 wadeable streams in Georgia were sampled during the September thru February index period using RBP protocols during three successive sample seasons (1999-2003). Ecoregional reference (minimally impaired) sites, as …

Energy Efficient Transportation For Florida, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker
Energy Efficient Transportation For Florida, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Nearly 30% of energy used in Florida is consumed by our 13 million personal automobiles. Annual gasoline consumption in Florida is about 7.5 billion gallons. Florida also has more registered cars per capita than any other state in the U.S. - nearly one car for each person. The average Florida automobile is driven over 10,000 miles a year burning about 550 gallons of gasoline and costing its owner about $1,500 in fuel costs alone (not to mention payments, insurance, service, repairs, tires, tags, license etc.). Based on a comprehensive analysis, total automobile operating costs average over $850 per month.

Race, Performance, And Baseball Card Values, John D. Hewitt, Robert Muñoz Jr., William L. Oliver, Robert M. Regoli
Peer Reviewed Publications
This study reports on a search for racial disparities in the value of baseball cards for Black and White members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF). The study’s sample of 51 players was derived from the population of the 96 players elected to the HOF since 1936 by the Baseball Writers of America. Although the authors found that race produced no statistical difference in Black and White players’ card values, they did observe that players’ career performance plus the availability of a player’s card (scarcity) exerted a significant effect on the value of cards. The study concludes with …

Legal Ethics And The Separation Of Law And Morals, W. Bradley Wendel
Legal Ethics And The Separation Of Law And Morals, W. Bradley Wendel
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This paper explores the jurisprudential question of the relationship between moral values and legal norms in legal advising and counseling in the context of an analysis of the so-called torture memos prepared by lawyers in the Office of Legal Counsel in 2002. The principal claim of the paper is that the torture memos are morally bankrupt because they are legally bankrupt. The lawyers' actions were wrong from a moral point of view because the lawyers failed with respect to their obligation to treat the law with respect, not simply as an inconvenient obstacle to be planned around. The morality of …
Willful Judging Of Harry Blackmun, The, Gregory C. Sisk
Willful Judging Of Harry Blackmun, The, Gregory C. Sisk
Missouri Law Review
As an invited guest at a symposium in which a central place is given to examining the personal papers and judicial life of a jurist who is esteemed and even revered by many of those participating and attending, my playing of a negative note may sound discordant. Indeed, it may appear downright rude. Because my hosts assured me that the academic ideal of balanced perspectives and critical analysis animated this symposium, and that they would expect nothing less than such a countervailing viewpoint from me, I feel less churlish than otherwise I might.
Justice Blackmun And The Spirit Of Liberty, Richard C. Reuben
Justice Blackmun And The Spirit Of Liberty, Richard C. Reuben
Missouri Law Review
As we see in this symposium, Justice Harry Blackmun is as controversial in death as he was in life. His strongest critics, such as Professor Greg Sisk, view the Justice as an unprincipled judge who let his personal views on the issues before the Court control his jurisprudence.' More damning words cannot be spoken about a judge, and Roe v. Wade of course is the case they focus on. His strongest proponents, most famously Yale Law School Dean Harold Koh and Stanford Law School Professor Pam Karlan, view the Justice as a man of high principle who worked carefully, methodically, …
