Tales From The Blackmun Papers: A Fuller Appreciation Of Harry Blackmun's Judicial Legacy, Joseph F. Kobylka Nov 2005

Tales From The Blackmun Papers: A Fuller Appreciation Of Harry Blackmun's Judicial Legacy, Joseph F. Kobylka

Missouri Law Review

Even after he leaves the Court, a Justice remains part of the orchestra. Those who succeed him may not copy his style, but often play within the same melodic and rhythmic structures. Justice Blackmun himself, over the course of preparing his Roe and Doe opinions, eventually fell into the structures put in place in cases ranging from Union Pacific Railway Co. v. Botsford to Stanley v. Georgia. The Justices he left behind did much the same with Roe and, more significantly, Bowers. The Court's decision in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey represented a partial "victory" for Justice Blackmun, …

The transfer RNA gene downstream from the HMR locus in S. cerevisiae functions as part of a boundary (barrier) element that restricts the spread of heterochromatic gene silencing into the downstream region of chromosome III. A genetic screen for identifying additional genes that, when mutated, allow inappropriate spreading of silencing from HMR through the tRNA gene was performed. YTA7, a gene containing bromodomain and ATPase homologies, was identified multiple times. Previously, others had shown that the bromodomain protein Bdf1p functions to restrict silencing at yeast euchromatin- heterochromatin boundaries; therefore we deleted nonessential bromodomain-containing genes to test their effects on heterochromatin …

Rhamnolipids Modulate Swarming Motility Patterns Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Nicky C. Caiazza, Robert M. Q. Shanks, G. A. O'Toole Nov 2005

Rhamnolipids Modulate Swarming Motility Patterns Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Nicky C. Caiazza, Robert M. Q. Shanks, G. A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is capable of twitching, swimming, and swarming motility. The latter form of translocation occurs on semisolid surfaces, requires functional flagella and biosurfactant production, and results in complex motility patterns. From the point of inoculation, bacteria migrate as defined groups, referred to as tendrils, moving in a coordinated manner capable of sensing and responding to other groups of cells. We were able to show that P. aeruginosa produces extracellular factors capable of modulating tendril movement, and genetic analysis revealed that modulation of these movements was dependent on rhamnolipid biosynthesis. An rhlB mutant (deficient in mono- and dirhamnolipid production) and …

麻雀治療實務手冊, Social Services Department, Yan Chai Hospital 仁濟醫院社會服務部, Asia-Pacific Institute Of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University 嶺南大學亞太老年學研究中心, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Wing Suen Wan Au Nov 2005

麻雀治療實務手冊, Social Services Department, Yan Chai Hospital 仁濟醫院社會服務部, Asia-Pacific Institute Of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University 嶺南大學亞太老年學研究中心, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Wing Suen Wan Au

Manual & Guide

Bioassay-Guided Fractionation Of Rubus Suavissimus Leaf Extracts Possessing Nf-Κb Inhibitory Activities And A Separable Cytotoxicity, Dong Liu, Zhanguo Gao, Jian Zhang, Jianping Ye, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

Leaf extract of Rubus suavissimus S. Lee (Rosaceae), a perennial woody shrub indigenous to southern China, was tested for its biological activity in the regulation of transcription factor NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa B) A NF-κB luciferase reporter cell line was used in this study. The crude extract inhibited NF-κB at 100-1000 μg/ml concentrations with minor cytotoxicity. This finding prompted two more rounds of fractionation toward separating the active fraction from the cytotoxic fraction. Five fractions were obtained in the first round of fractionation, of which RUS-C20 was found to be the most potent in inhibiting NF-κB without signs of cytotoxicity …

Invertebrate & Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw University Nature Park And Arboretum, Karl Koehler, Libby Sue Allard, Kyra Dawn Reed Nov 2005

Invertebrate & Leaf Litter Dynamics In The Depauw University Nature Park And Arboretum, Karl Koehler, Libby Sue Allard, Kyra Dawn Reed

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Our study focuses on the interaction between invertebrate abundance and the decomposition of leaf litter. The decomposition of leaf litter plays a major role in the nutrient cycling process, which is critical to the health of an ecosystem (Spurr and Barnes 1980). The dynamics between invertebrates and leaf litter are of particular importance because invertebrates are good indicators of the activity of the decomposer community. Abiotic factors such as soil pH and temperature are also important influences on decomposition rates (Bornebusch 1930; Petersen & Luxton 1982; Seastedt 1984). Our goal was to determine the nature of this interaction. Ultimately, this …

Student Employee Recruitment And Retention Through Campus Partnerships, Corinne M. Daprano, Megan L. Coyle, Peter J. Titlebaum

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Recruitment and retention of student employees are important considerations for any recreational sports department, large or small, because student employees impact both the quantity and quality of programs and services. This article proposes a strategy for establishing partnerships with academic departments to aid in the recruitment and retention of student employees. These partnerships benefit students, the recreational sports department, academic departments, and university student retention efforts. Following a description of this strategy is an example of a partnership that has been successfully established at one Midwestern university.

A Bayesian Subset Analysis Of Sensory Evaluation Data, Balgobin Nandram Nov 2005

A Bayesian Subset Analysis Of Sensory Evaluation Data, Balgobin Nandram

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In social sciences it is easy to carry out sensory experiments using say a J-point hedonic scale. One major problem with the J-point hedonic scale is that a conversion from the category scales to numeric scores might not be sensible because the panelists generally view increments on the hedonic scale as psychologically unequal. In the current problem several products are rated by a set of panelists on the J-point hedonic scale. One objective is to select the best subset of products and to assess the quality of the products by estimating the mean and standard deviation response …

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Supervised classification into c mutually exclusive classes based on n binary features is considered. The only information available is an n×c table with probabilities. Knowing that the best d features are not the d best, simulations were run for 4 feature selection methods and an application to diagnosing BSE in cattle and Scrapie in sheep is presented.

Training Statisticians To Be Alert To The Dangers Of Misapplying Statistical Methods, Vance W. Berger Nov 2005

Training Statisticians To Be Alert To The Dangers Of Misapplying Statistical Methods, Vance W. Berger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Statisticians are faced with a variety of challenges. Their ability to cope successfully with these challenges depends, in large part, on the quality of their training. It is not the purpose of this article to present a comprehensive training plan that will overhaul the standard curriculum a statistician might follow under current training regimens (i.e., in a degree program). Rather, the objective is to point out important areas that appear to be under-represented in standard curricula and correspondingly overlooked too often in practice. The hope is that these areas might be better integrated into the training of the next generation …

Ab/Ba Crossover Trials - Binary Outcome, James F. Reed Iii Nov 2005

Ab/Ba Crossover Trials - Binary Outcome, James F. Reed Iii

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

On occasion, the response to treatment in an AB/BA crossover trial is measured on a binary variable - success or failure. It is assumed that response to treatment is measured on an outcome variable with (+) representing a treatment success and a (-) representing a treatment failure. Traditionally, three tests for comparing treatment effect have been used (McNemar’s, Mainland-Gart, and Prescott’s). An issue arises concerning treatment comparisons when there may be a residual effect (carryover effect) of a previous treatment affecting the current treatment. A general consensus as to which procedure is preferable is debatable. However, if both group and …

Growth, Fecundity, And Diets Of Newly Established Silver Carp In The Middle Mississippi River, Christopher J. Williamson, James E. Garvey

Publications

The silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix has spread throughout the Mississippi River drainage. During 2003, we determined its population status and potential impact in the middle Mississippi River (MMR), the conduit between the lower Mississippi River and the upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers. We quantified growth, age structure, fecundity, and diets of silver carp sampled with trammel nets and AC electrofishing in main-channel areas. Mean length at age in the MMR exceeded that of populations in Asia by as much as 26%. Individuals were typically more than 1 year old and 230 mm total length, suggesting that small, young fish …

Revelations From The Blackmun Papers On The Development Of Death Penalty Law, Martha Dragich Pearson Nov 2005

Revelations From The Blackmun Papers On The Development Of Death Penalty Law, Martha Dragich Pearson

Missouri Law Review

Justice Blackmun's legacy is strongly linked to two issues - abortion and capital punishment. Blackmun's opinions in these controversial areas account for much of the notion that his ideology changed while on the Court. Participants in this Symposium have reflected on these and other areas where Justice Blackmun left his mark on American law. Professor Deason explores the arbitrability cases and shows that the Court struggled - and Justices changed their minds - even in connection with relatively technical legal issues arising in non-controversial commercial contexts. One reason the Court struggles with some issues is that legal standards are (or …
