A Legal Analysis Of Adea And Its Impact On Older Workers, Employer Efficiency And Human Resource Practices, M. Elizabeth Starchura

Seminar Research Paper Series

The question that this paper addresses is whether age discrimination laws are justified for the protection of older workers from a societal and economic point of view. An analysis of the congressional intent in enacting the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) and a brief review of significant court interpretations of the ADEA provides initial insight into the legislative objectives and the unique problems that older persons face in the workforce. Understanding The Relative Importance Of Positive And Negative Social Exchanges: Examining Specific Domains And Appraisals, Jason T. Newsom, Karen S. Rook, Masami Nishishiba, Dara H. Sorkin, Tyrae Mahan

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Negative social exchanges have been more reliably related to psychological health than have positive social exchanges. Little research, however, has sought to understand how underlying appraisal processes link such exchanges to psychological health. This study examined the frequencies of occurrence and appraisals of four parallel domains of positive and negative exchanges in relation to positive well-being and psychological distress in a national sample of 916 older adults. Structural equation analyses revealed that negative exchanges were related both to less well-being and greater psychological distress, whereas positive exchanges were related only to positive well-being. Furthermore, results supported a process in which …

The Need For Social Work Intervention For The Elderly Patients And Their Family Members, Yasuyo Abo Jan 2005

The Need For Social Work Intervention For The Elderly Patients And Their Family Members, Yasuyo Abo

Theses Digitization Project

Contends that poor discharge planning for elderly patients in American hospitals is the result of reduced lengths of stay which do not give medical social workers adequate time to assess patients' needs. A survey methodology was used to assess social service and community resource needs of hospitalized elderly patients and their family members at Riverside Community Hospital in California. Argues that the results of the survey can be used to improve discharge planning and lead to a more client-centered practice in hospitals.

Profits And Professionalism, Deborah Rhode

The article studies this issue in three different contexts. First, it looks at workplace cultures and professional values. Differential Effects Of Alzheimer's Disease And Huntington's Disease On The Performance Of Mental Rotation, Tara T. Lineweaver, David P. Salmon, Mark W. Bondi, Jody Corey-Bloom

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

he ability to spatially rotate a mental image was compared in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 18) and patients with Huntington's disease (HD; n = 18). Compared to their respective age-matched normal control (NC) group, the speed, but not the accuracy, of mental rotation abnormally decreased with increasing angle of orientation for patients with HD. In contrast, the accuracy, but not the speed, of rotation abnormally decreased with increasing angle of orientation for patients with AD. Additional analyses showed that these unique patterns of performance were not attributable to different speed/accuracy trade-off sensitivities. This double dissociation suggests that …

Faculty Publications

Over the past several decades, federal policy has made states and communities increasingly more responsible for providing long-term care for older adults. The Community Partnerships for Older Adults, a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, saw this as an opportunity to explore new, sustainable ways to meet current and future needs for community-based long-term care. This initiative focuses on collaborative organizational partnerships, a distinctive philosophy of teaching and learning through the exchange of experience between communities, and program learning focusing on known factors promoting organizational sustainability. Using principles that emphasize the development of social capital and collective efficacy, …
