A Comparison Of Syntax Training For Students With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Clinician-Directed Versus Self-Determined Session Paradigms, Jane O'Regan Kleinert Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Syntax Training For Students With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Clinician-Directed Versus Self-Determined Session Paradigms, Jane O'Regan Kleinert

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Self-determination is the ability to control one’s life and to actively participate in the decisions which affect the direction of one’s life. This ability is considered a critical life skill for individuals with developmental disabilities. The ability to make choices, plan, and self-evaluate are among the primary skills included in the development of self-determination. Currently, there is very limited emphasis on the importance of self-determination in the literature of communication disorders. This study was designed to determine if a teaching paradigm which incorporates key elements of self-determination is as or more effective and efficient in teaching syntax than a traditional, …

The Intersection Of Filial Piety And Cultural Dissonance: Intergenerational Exchanges Among Khmer Families In The United States, Denise Clark Lewis Jan 2005

The Intersection Of Filial Piety And Cultural Dissonance: Intergenerational Exchanges Among Khmer Families In The United States, Denise Clark Lewis

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis I describe Khmers negotiations of circumstances surrounding the disassembly, reconstruction, and redefinition of Khmer identity from their homeland in Cambodia to a traditional Khmer village recreated in the United States. Using a framework derived from a constructivist perspective, I have placed processes of negotiation and identity transformation within the lived context of Khmers lives. Thus, a holistic understanding of the interrelatedness of multiple changes in Khmerness is made possible. Ethnographic data collected between 1997 and 1999, through participant-observation and interviews, inform this study. Findings from this study reveal three levels of identity transformation as told by members …

Frankl, Bettelheim, And The Camps, Amy Louise Adamczyk Jan 2005

Frankl, Bettelheim, And The Camps, Amy Louise Adamczyk

Publications and Research

Immediately after the Holocaust a number of researchers wrote about and developed theories on how inmates' personalities changed because of time spent within Nazi concentration camps. The camps offered an unfortunate setting to understand socialization within total institutions. Some of the most important contributions to that literature have come from Victor Frankl and Bruno Bettelheim. They wrote about their experiences of imprisonment and presented markedly different accounts on what happened to prisoners' personalities. Although literature on the Holocaust is still prevalent, even as survivors have aged, less attention has been given to how the camps influenced inmates' personalities. Nevertheless, many …

Actor And Partner Effects Among Marital Dyads In Retirement Adjustment And Well-Being, Julie Guenette Howard Jan 2005

Actor And Partner Effects Among Marital Dyads In Retirement Adjustment And Well-Being, Julie Guenette Howard

Dissertations and Theses

Our understanding of and interest in how retirement impacts the lives of individuals have grown over the past 20 years. Studies to date have ranged from small, convenience samples composed primarily of men to large, national longitudinal samples of men and women from different professional and socioeconomic backgrounds. There is consensus in the literature that older adults generally function better with a partner; however, gaps remain. We know little about the impact of retirement beyond the individual, although research in other areas on couples has produced evidence of crossover and contagion effects relative to depression and other outcomes, including absenteeism, …

A Study Of Undergraduate Filial Piety As A Predictor Of Academic Achievement, Yan Kuang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to enhance learning outcome, filial piety is explored in this study as a holistic approach to optimize human internal conditions and performance and reach human potential. Through a synthesis of modern life science and Eastern philosophies and beliefs, a Theory of Human Prosperity by filial piety was proposed. A bio-social model of the relationship between the nature and the culture of filial piety was established and the notion of filial piety was reconceptualized. Based on the Theory of Human Prosperity by filial piety, a hypothesis of filial piety that predicts undergraduate academic achievement (represented by their SAT total …

Physical Function And Health Related Quality Of Life In Culturally Diverse Elders: Evidence Of Environmental Press, Robyn M. Bossier Jan 2005

Physical Function And Health Related Quality Of Life In Culturally Diverse Elders: Evidence Of Environmental Press, Robyn M. Bossier

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this project was to identify group differences in physical function and HRQL between older adults living in different environments, and to compare information from these groups to data from a random sample of elders pulled from the general population. METHODS: Seventy-eight older adults were evaluated for physical function using the continuous-scale physical functional performance test (CS-PFP) and HRQL using the SF-36 v.2. Subjects were 26 predominantly African American participants (LOW group; age 72.2 ± 8.1 years), 26 Caucasian adults (HIGH group; age 77.6 ± 4.8 years), and 26 adults selected from a population-based study (POP group; age …

Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope And Functional Physical Performance In Elderly Adults, Scott Eric Fuller Jan 2005

Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope And Functional Physical Performance In Elderly Adults, Scott Eric Fuller

LSU Master's Theses

Background: The Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope (OUES) attained during submaximal treadmill exercise is a reliable index of cardiorespiratory capacity in older adults. This investigation compares OUES values derived during treadmill walking and performance of the Continuous Scale Physical Function Performance test (CS-PFP). Method: A Cosmed portable metabolic cart was used to collect breath gases in 36 older adults (age: 81.8 +/- 7.8 years). Twenty-one subjects performed both the incremental treadmill test and the CS-PFP while an additional 15 subjects performed the CS-PFP, only. Results: The regression of log Ventilation vs. VO2 reveals similar correlations for the CS-PFP and treadmill …

Participation In The Paid Labor Force By Caregivers Of Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Eileen M. Brennan, Ana Maria Brannan Jan 2005

Participation In The Paid Labor Force By Caregivers Of Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Eileen M. Brennan, Ana Maria Brannan

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

We explored the relationship between school-age children's emotional and behavioral symptoms and workforce participation of their family caregivers using structural equation modeling. Secondary analysis of data from the national evaluation of the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families Program was performed with a subsample of 2,585 caregivers. Findings from structural equation modeling indicated that higher levels of internalizing and externalizing symptoms were significant predictors of more frequent school absences, less adequate childcare, and greater caregiver strain related to missing work. In turn, more adequate childcare and greater caregiver strain from missed work were associated with lower …

Influence Of Gender On Heart Rate And Core Temperature At Critical Wbgt For Five Clothing Ensembles At Three Levels Of Metabolic Rate, Maeen Zakaria Islam Jan 2005

Influence Of Gender On Heart Rate And Core Temperature At Critical Wbgt For Five Clothing Ensembles At Three Levels Of Metabolic Rate, Maeen Zakaria Islam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Three main factors that influence heat stress are clothing, work demands and environmental conditions. Gender may also influence the amount of heat stress an individual can tolerate. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of gender in heat stress limits (critical WBGT) and heat strain (heart rate and core temperature). The null hypothesis was that there was no gender difference among critical WBGT, heart rate and core temperature.

Fifteen subjects (11 men and 4 women) wore five different clothing ensembles (cotton work clothes, cotton coveralls, particle barrier Tyvek, water-barrier/vapor permeable NexGen LS417, and vapor barrier Tychem QC …

The Inevitable Ageing Of The Population And The Implications Of Prolonging Employment For Older Adults, Monica Rose Cooper Jan 2005

The Inevitable Ageing Of The Population And The Implications Of Prolonging Employment For Older Adults, Monica Rose Cooper

Theses : Honours

One of the proposed solutions to Australia's ageing population (12% aged over 65 years in 1997 to 22% by 2031; Australian Bureau of Statistics, ABS, 2000) and the perceived burden on the economy, is for older adults to remain in paid employment longer. The present study explored the perspectives of older adults concerning employment and working beyond the age of 65 years. A qualitative methodology was employed and data was collected through the use of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 11 participants aged between 60-75 years of age. Thematic content analysis was performed in order to identify core issues and themes. …
