Beginnings Of U.S. Pragmatism, Sociology, And Empire: Dewey, Mead, And The Philippine Problem, 1900-1930s, Peter Chua Aug 2005

Beginnings Of U.S. Pragmatism, Sociology, And Empire: Dewey, Mead, And The Philippine Problem, 1900-1930s, Peter Chua

Faculty Publications, Sociology

This paper examines how the social psychology of U.S. pragmatists John Dewey and George Herbert Mead shapes how early U.S. sociology position itself on questions of U.S. empire and geo-political dominance. It focuses also on how pragmatist thought influences how 1920s Chicago sociologists Robert Park and Emory Bogardus produced symbolic interactionist theories and studies on U.S. race and international relations. This paper makes several interventions in the history of U.S. sociological theory. It re-examines the history of U.S. sociology and the philosophy of pragmatism through the lens of empire, rather than simply a myopic looking-glass of the “race problem.” This re-examination …

What's In A Phrase?, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

We all use phrases without a second thought or glance. Many of these word liaisons, however, are host to a world of hidden words and hidden letter patterns. Some of these are now about to be exposed. The phrases under scrutiny here are mostly, but not exclusively, 2-word affairs.

Flow Reversal Events Increase The Abundance Of Nontroglobitic Fish In The Subterranean Rivers Of Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, Michael Ruhl

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mammoth Cave National Park (MCNP) is home to the longest cave system in the World and is dissected by the Green River, one of the most speciose watersheds on the continent. Cave springs create a direct aquatic link between subterranean waterways and the Green River. The history of these subterranean river systems is filled with eyewitness reports of various species of surface water (nontroglobitic) fishes, including introduced rainbow trout. This study documents the occurrence of Green River fish species in the cave system of MCNP. Four sites were sampled over a two year period using a variety of gears. In …

Scoring Subscales Using Multidimensional Item Response Theory Model, Christine E. Demars Aug 2005

Scoring Subscales Using Multidimensional Item Response Theory Model, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

Several methods for estimating item response theory scores for multiple subtests were compared. These methods included two multidimensional item response theory models: a bifactor model where each subtest was a composite score based on the primary trait measured by the set of tests and a secondary trait measured by the individual subtest, and a model where the traits measured by the subtests were separate but correlated. Composite scores based on unidimensional item response theory, with each subtest borrowing information from the other subtest, as well as independent unidimensional scores for each subtest were also considered. Correlations among scores from all …

Creative Commons And The New Intermediaries, Michael W. Carroll Aug 2005

Creative Commons And The New Intermediaries, Michael W. Carroll

Working Paper Series

This symposium contribution examines the disintermediating and reintermediating roles played by Creative Commons licenses on the Internet. Creative Commons licenses act as a disintermediating force because they enable end-to-end transactions in copyrighted works. The licenses have reintermediating force by enabling new services and new online communities to form around content licensed under a Creative Commons license. Intermediaries focused on the copyright dimension have begun to appear online as search engines, archives, libraries, publishers, community organizers, and educators. Moreover, the growth of machine-readable copyright licenses and the new intermediaries that they enable is part of a larger movement toward a Semantic …

Nepal: The End Of Shangri-La, Julia Chang Bloch Aug 2005

Nepal: The End Of Shangri-La, Julia Chang Bloch

Liberal Democracy Nepal Bulletin

Democracy proponents face unpalatable choices, and there is no clear path towards resolving the conundrum. The royal coup, however, was not the best option. The Maoists have survived and strengthened because of the disarray among the democratic parties. What the King could have done was to lead the political parties into a united front to pursue peace with the Maoists. Now, he has completely sidelined the parties, going it alone, possibly allowing the Maoists to play one against the other and gain the upper hand.

Implications Of Spatial Autocorrelation And Dispersal For The Modeling Of Species Distributions, Volker Bahn Aug 2005

Implications Of Spatial Autocorrelation And Dispersal For The Modeling Of Species Distributions, Volker Bahn

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Modeling the geographical distributions of wildlife species is important for ecology and conservation biology. Spatial autocorrelation in species distributions poses a problem for distribution modeling because it invalidates the assumption of independence among sample locations. I explored the prevalence and causes of spatial autocorrelation in data from the Breeding Bird Survey, covering the conterminous United States, using Regression Trees, Conditional Autoregressive Regressions (CAR), and the partitioning of variance. I also constructed a simulation model to investigate dispersal as a process contributing to spatial autocorrelation, and attempted to verify the connection between dispersal and spatial autocorrelation in species’ distributions in empirical …

Big-Bodied Males Help Us Recognize That Females Have Big Pelves, Robert G. Tague Aug 2005

Big-Bodied Males Help Us Recognize That Females Have Big Pelves, Robert G. Tague

Faculty Publications

Schultz ([1949] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 7:401-424) presented a conundrum: among primates, sexual dimorphism of the pelvis is a developmental adjunct to dimorphism in other aspects of the body, albeit in the converse direction. Among species in which males are larger than females in body size, females are larger than males in some pelvic dimensions; species with little sexual dimorphism in nonpelvic size show little pelvic dimorphism. Obstetrical difficulty does not explain this relationship. The present study addresses this issue, evaluating the relationship between pelvic and femoral sexual dimorphism in 12 anthropoid species. The hypothesis is that species in which …

Cheetah: Circuit-Switched High-Speed End-To-End Transport Architecture Testbed, Xuan Zheng, Malathi Veeraraghavan, Nageswara S. V. Rao, Qishi Wu, Mengxia Zhu

Computer Science Publications

We propose a circuit-switched high-speed end-to-end transport architecture (CHEETAH) as a networking solution to provide high-speed end-to-end circuit connectivity to end hosts on a dynamic call-by-call basis. Not only is it envisioned as a complementary service to the basic connectionless service provided by today’s Internet; it also relies on and leverages the presence of this service. Noting the dominance of Ethernet in LANs and SONET/SDH in WANs, CHEETAH circuits will consist of Ethernet segments at the ends and Ethernet-over-SONET segments in the wide area. In this article we explain the CHEETAH concept and describe a wide-area experimental network testbed we …

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey Aug 2005

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Complex systems, such as urban systems, emerge unpredictably without the influence of central control as a result of adaptive behavior by their component, interacting agents. This paper analyses city size distributions, by decade, from the south-western region of the United States for the years 1890–1990. It determines if the distributions were clustered and documents changes in the pattern of clusters over time. Clusters were determined utilizing a kernel density estimator and cluster analysis. The data were clustered as determined by both methods. The analyses identified 4–7 clusters of cities in each of the decades analysed. Cities cluster into size classes, …

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On Panax Quinquefolius Ecophysiology And Pharmacological Activity On Human Breast Mcf-7 Carcinoma Cells, Gera M. Jochum Aug 2005

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On Panax Quinquefolius Ecophysiology And Pharmacological Activity On Human Breast Mcf-7 Carcinoma Cells, Gera M. Jochum

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of increased temperatures associated with climate change on an understory medicinal herb, Panax quinquefolius. Three-year old P. quinquefolius were grown in a greenhouse at low (25°C day/20°C night) or elevated (30°C/25°C) temperatures for one growing season. Elevated temperatures decreased photosynthesis and accelerated leaf senescence. At the end of the growing season, biomass was detrimentally affected by increased temperatures; yet the concentration of root ginsenosides, secondary metabolites thought to be the primary pharmacological components, was higher in plants grown in the elevated temperature treatment than in plants grown in the low …

A Hydrogeological Perspective Of The Status Of Ground Water Resources Under The Un Watercourse Convention, Gabriel Eckstein Aug 2005

A Hydrogeological Perspective Of The Status Of Ground Water Resources Under The Un Watercourse Convention, Gabriel Eckstein

Faculty Scholarship

When the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses in 1997, it took a decisive step in recognizing the important role that transboundary ground water resources play in human progress and development. In so doing, it also acknowledged the need to establish principles of law governing this "invisible" but valuable natural resource. Transboundary ground water historically has been neglected in treaties, ignored in projects with international implications, and cursorily misunderstood in much of legal discourse.

While the Convention provides substantial clarification on the status of ground water under international law, it also leaves considerable …
