Population And Habitat Analyses For Dall's Sheep (Ovis Dalli) In Wrangell-St. Elias National Park And Preserve, Miranda Lilian Terwilliger Aug 2005

Population And Habitat Analyses For Dall's Sheep (Ovis Dalli) In Wrangell-St. Elias National Park And Preserve, Miranda Lilian Terwilliger

Biological Sciences

We summarized and statistically analyzed historical fixed-wing aerial surveys (1949-2002) and harvest records (1983-2002) of Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli dalIi) from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST). Among survey units there were significant differences in observed densities, hunter-reported harvest, horn lengths of harvested rams, and horn length residuals from the regression of length on age. There was no consistent evidence of net change in WRST-wide sheep density, even though some survey units showed trends in density. Reported harvest in WRST declined linearly during 1973-2003 from 376 to 139 rams per year. We estimated the relationships among population and habitat …

The Perception Of The Value Of The Use Of Primary Source Documents Among East Tennessee Lakeway Area History Teachers In Grades 5-12., Matthew Elliott Drinnon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the perceptions of history and social studies teachers in the Lakeway Area of East Tennessee concerning the use of primary source materials in classroom instruction. The purpose of this study was to determine what value the educators in the intact group held for the use of primary source documents, how much time was devoted to the analysis of primary source documents by students in those classes, and potential barriers to the implementation of the use of primary source materials.

The research design was descriptive and used data gathered from a survey instrument constructed by the researcher. A …

The Geography Of Climate Change Litigation: Implications For Transnational Regulatory Governance, Hari Osofsky Aug 2005

The Geography Of Climate Change Litigation: Implications For Transnational Regulatory Governance, Hari Osofsky

ExpressO

ABSTRACT: This article aims to forward the dialogue about transnational corporate regulation by mapping the power dynamics that infuse litigation over energy production’s externalities and their implications for sovereign regulatory authority. The piece’s core argument is that appropriately constraining the externalities of energy production demands a nuanced, spatial understanding of the relationship among governmental regulatory entities, corporations, and the other actors that influence them. Part II begins by considering the multi-layered regulatory dilemmas posed by the transnational energy production process, the uncertain status of corporations under international law, and the law and economics debate over appropriate and effective environmental regulation …

Two Concepts Of Liberalism In Establishment Clause Jurisprudence, Kevin Pybas Aug 2005

Two Concepts Of Liberalism In Establishment Clause Jurisprudence, Kevin Pybas

ExpressO

The political theorist William Galston argues that the liberal political tradition contains two distinct strands of philosophical thought. One emphasizes the principle of autonomy, while the other stresses the principle of diversity. These principles, according to Galston, are in tension with each other and as guiding criterions lead to quite different public policies. Autonomy-centered liberalism seeks to promote autonomy or “individual self-direction”; it reflects a “commitment to sustained rational examination of self, others, and social practices.” As such, autonomy-centered liberals are generally suspicious of religious belief and seek to confine it to the private sphere. Diversity-centered liberalism, on the other …

Individuals, Ethics, And Empathy Of Mind, Nancy Cantor Aug 2005

Individuals, Ethics, And Empathy Of Mind, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

The Socratic question, "How should one live?" is a central motivating one for ethics.1 Today, I would like to consider three animating questions that fall within this concern:

• What are the challenges for an ethical person as a member of a community?

• What form do these challenges specifically take in our 21st-century society/world?

• What is the best way to tackle these challenges within university communities?

Applying Cognitive Psychology To Education, Training And Testing: Review Of Experimental Cognitive Psychology And Its Applications, A. F. Healy (Ed.)., Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This book, which is part of the American Psychological Association’s Decade of Behavior series, is both less and more than it seems. Its title sounds like it would be suitable for a cognitive psychology laboratory course, but its scope is too narrow for that. It focuses largely on a relatively small subset of applied cognitive psychological topics—education, training, and testing—and the research traditions of three (albeit three distinguished and influential) researchers: Lyle Bourne, Walter Kintsch, and Thomas Landauer. In that sense, then, the book is less than it seems. In another sense, though, it is more than it seems. In …

An Assessment Of The Impacts Of Climate Change On The Upper Clackamas River Basin With A Distributed Hydrologic Model, David Graves Aug 2005

An Assessment Of The Impacts Of Climate Change On The Upper Clackamas River Basin With A Distributed Hydrologic Model, David Graves

Dissertations and Theses

The Pacific Northwest is dependent on seasonal snowmelt for water resources that support a significant portion of its economy. Increased temperatures resulting from higher concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases may cause disruptions to these resources because of reductions in the annual snowpack and variations of the timing of snowmelt. This study reconstructs and applies a GIS-based distributed hydrologic model at a monthly scale to assess the effects of future climate change on runoff from the Upper Clackamas River Basin (located near Portland, Oregon). Historic flow data and snow measurements are used to calibrate and test the performance of the hydro …

Do Cooperative Initiatives Improve Transit Performance? The Impact Of Cooperation Between Agencies On Transit Performance, Anne-Marie Rooskens Aug 2005

Do Cooperative Initiatives Improve Transit Performance? The Impact Of Cooperation Between Agencies On Transit Performance, Anne-Marie Rooskens

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Ridership in the New Orleans region is down, and transit agencies are challenged to increase transit performance. Transit professionals expect many benefits from cooperation between transit systems in the region including an increase in efficiency and effectiveness. The question is "do these cooperative initiatives between transit agencies improve transit performance?" To answer this question a survey has been held to collect data regarding regional initiatives implemented by transit agencies. In addition data were collected from the transit agencies websites. The analysis focused on the comparison between agencies that implemented regional initiatives versus agencies that did not implement any regional initiative. …

Colonial Legacies And Development Performance In Africa, Stephanie Burchard Aug 2005

Colonial Legacies And Development Performance In Africa, Stephanie Burchard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It is often assumed that significant differences existed between Great Britain and France with regards to their respective styles of colonial administration. Some researchers have asserted that this difference in colonial administration has affected post-colonial economic and political development in Africa. This paper offers some theoretical, anecdotal, and econometric evidence questioning the validity of these assumptions. This paper also examines some commonly encountered problems associated with econometric analyses of African development: namely, the availability and reliability of data, and the difficulty in operationalizing and measuring political development in Africa.

Comparing Different Levels Of Interactivity In The Visualization Of Spatio-Temporal Data, Samara Ebinger Aug 2005

Comparing Different Levels Of Interactivity In The Visualization Of Spatio-Temporal Data, Samara Ebinger

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Internet and other advances in technology have dramatically affected cartography in recent decades and yet these new capabilities have not been adequately evaluated for effectiveness. Are dynamic maps more effective than traditional static paper maps in allowing users to visualize spatio-temporal patterns? How important is a higher level of interactivity in visualizing data? Which format is preferred? To examine these questions, human subject tests were conducted to evaluate different levels of interactivity as represented by 1) a static paper map series; 2) an animated map with 'VCR'-type controls; and 3) a toggle map featuring an interactive temporal legend. Results …

A Reanalysis Of The 1916, 1918, 1927, 1928, And 1935 Tropical Cyclones Of The North Atlantic Basin, David Allen Glenn Aug 2005

A Reanalysis Of The 1916, 1918, 1927, 1928, And 1935 Tropical Cyclones Of The North Atlantic Basin, David Allen Glenn

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis research involves a reanalysis of the National Hurricane Center?s Atlantic Basin Hurricane Database (HURDAT) for 1916, 1918, 1927, 1928, and 1935. Newly available meteorological records from ship logs (COADS) along with recently discovered historical documents were used to reassess tropical cyclone location and intensity. Tropical cyclone track and intensity alterations are discussed in detail in a supporting metadata file. The overall results of the reanalysis process were minor alterations, with some major changes, to the track and intensity of tropical cyclones in HURDAT. Four tropical storms were added: one in 1918, one in 1927, and two in 1935. …

Speleogenesis Of Large Flank Margin Caves Of The Bahamas, Ioan Lascu Aug 2005

Speleogenesis Of Large Flank Margin Caves Of The Bahamas, Ioan Lascu

Theses and Dissertations

Flank margin caves of the Bahamas are formed by mixing dissolution in a fresh-water lens. As they evolve, the probability of intersecting neighboring voids increases, and they enlarge in a nonlinear fashion. Large flank margin caves become constrained by surface topography and their morphology is influenced by the shape of the enclosing land mass as a result. High phreatic ceilings can be dissolved if the fresh-water lens is distorted by lithological heterogeneities or hydrologic loading due to storm events. Early diagenesis of the host rock causes the reorganization of porosity and permeability through dissolution and cementation processes. Meteoric overprinting occurs …

A Chain-Type Wireless Sensor Network For Monitoring Long Range Infrastructures, Chang Wen Chen, Yu Wang, Ivica Kostanic Aug 2005

A Chain-Type Wireless Sensor Network For Monitoring Long Range Infrastructures, Chang Wen Chen, Yu Wang, Ivica Kostanic

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present in this paper an investigation on a special class of wireless sensor networks for monitoring critical infrastructures that may extend for hundreds of miles in distances. Such networks are fundamentally different from traditional sensor networks in that the sensor nodes in this class of networks are deployed along narrowly elongated geographical areas and form a chain-type topology. Based on careful analysis of existing sensor network architectures, we first demonstrate the needs to develop new architecture and networking protocols to match the unique topology of chain-type sensor networks. We then propose hierarchical network architecture that consists of clusters of …
