Xeric Limestone Prairies Of Eastern United States, Patrick Joseph Lawless
Xeric Limestone Prairies Of Eastern United States, Patrick Joseph Lawless
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Xeric limestone prairies (XLPs) are open, nonforested communities dominatedby native, C4 perennial grasses. In eastern United States, they occur on shallow, rockycalcareous soils in various physiographic provinces from Missouri and Pennsylvaniasouth to Arkansas and Georgia. Floristic, vegetation, and physical environmental datawere collected from 18 XLPs in Kentucky and used in conjunction with data collected inother studies to provide a synthesis for XLP vegetation in eastern United States and acomparison of this vegetation type with limestone cedar glades and deep-soil barrens.XLPs occur on 33 soil series in five orders (Alfisols, Mollisols, Ultisols, Inceptisols, andVertisols) and on limestone, dolomite, and calcareous shale …
Mediating Indigenous Identity: Video, Advocacy, And Knowledge In Oaxaca, Mexico, Laurel Catherine Smith
Mediating Indigenous Identity: Video, Advocacy, And Knowledge In Oaxaca, Mexico, Laurel Catherine Smith
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, many indigenous communities further their struggles for greater political and cultural autonomy by working with transnational non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Communication technology (what I call comtech) is increasingly vital to these intersecting socio-spatial relations of activism and advocacy. In this dissertation, I examine how comtech offer indigenous individuals and organizations with the means for visualizing their political-cultural agendas. Approaching the access and use of comtech, especially video technologies, as a partial and situated technoscience, I inquire into how and why these activities reconfigure the production and evaluation of authoritative knowledge about indigenous peoples, places, …
Pragmatism And The Politics Of Rewilding Nature: The Case Of Grizzly Bear Reintroduction In Idaho, John G. Hintz
Pragmatism And The Politics Of Rewilding Nature: The Case Of Grizzly Bear Reintroduction In Idaho, John G. Hintz
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In 1975, the US Fish and Wildlife Service listed the grizzly bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Following the listing, a recovery plan was drafted in which the Bitterroot Ecosystem of central Idaho and extreme western Montana was one of six proposed grizzly bear recovery areas. It was the only one of the six, however, which did not contain a resident population of grizzlies. The Fish and Wildlife Service eventually accepted a proposal submitted by a coalition of environmental and timber industry groups. The coalition proposed to reestablish a population of grizzlies in the Bitterroot by …

Identity In Evangelical Ukraine: Negotiating Regionalism, Nationalism, And Transnationalism, Esther Grace Long
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines identity formation among evangelical Protestants in contemporary Ukraine. The overarching question is this: how do Ukrainian evangelicals view themselves and their churches in the context of Ukrainian regionalism, Ukrainian nationalism, and religious transnationalism? This question demands a closer look at Ukrainian regional variation, the status of Ukrainian national identity among evangelical practitioners, and the process of religious transnationalism, including how evangelicals perceive the West. This project is primarily based on qualitative research methods carried out over a ten month period. Field methods included participant observation, focus group interviews, and individual interviews. A set of maps produced by …
Role Of Weak Zone Geometry And Rheology In The Generation Of Intraplate Seismicity, Abhishek Joshi
Role Of Weak Zone Geometry And Rheology In The Generation Of Intraplate Seismicity, Abhishek Joshi
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
In intraplate seismic zones (e.g. the New Madrid Seismic Zone, NMSZ, in the southcentral United States), the source of stress that drives earthquake is very complex. Data from the NMSZ indicate 3 earthquake of magnitude M~7, occurring at an approximate interval of 500 years during the last 2000 years. One hypothesis that satisfies these conditions proposes that short-lived bursts of earthquakes may result from perturbations in the local or regional stress field. This causes relaxation of a lower crustal weak zone which drive repeated earthquakes. The number of earthquakes is dependent on the geometry and rheology of the weak zone. …
An Approach To Determine The Need For Expanding Small Airports: A Case Study, Jeffrey A. Johnson
An Approach To Determine The Need For Expanding Small Airports: A Case Study, Jeffrey A. Johnson
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Airports play an important role in the economic vitality of communities and surrounding areas. In developing and expanding an airport, there are many different variables that must be taken into account. One fundamental aspect of airport expansion is the need to hangar aircraft. The purpose of this study was to investigate constituent interest in building at least 10 new T-hangars and expanding the Blair Municipal Airport's (K46) services located in rural Blair, Nebraska (Washington County). A descriptive study questionnaire developed specifically for this study was used to collect the data from 1,232 certificated pilots in five surrounding counties of the …
Ficciones De Patagonia: La Construccion Del Sur En La Narrativa Argentina Y Chilena, Silvia E. Casini
Ficciones De Patagonia: La Construccion Del Sur En La Narrativa Argentina Y Chilena, Silvia E. Casini
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Contemporary novels about Patagonia rely on foundational texts to caricature the region as a sterile, empty, and isolated. This stereotype was the impetus for this study. Through literary texts concerning Patagonia, the author joins the theoretical debate regarding the relationship between marginal and hegemonic cultures. A close analysis of writings on Patagonia reveals that the image of Patagonian space varies considerably depending on the perspective of the narrator, character, or writer. This dissertation analyzes the construction of Patagonian space in six contemporary novels by Chilean and Argentinean writers. It is divided into two sections. The first section discusses novels written …

Religious Processions: Urban Politics And Poetics, Lily Kong
Religious Processions: Urban Politics And Poetics, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, I will explore the ways in which processions, by their very visibility, foreground the relationships between the secular and the sacred, while contributing to a construction of identity and community, and simultaneously surfacing fractures therein. Using the example of multireligious yet secular Singapore, I will examine (a) the state's management of religious processions, including the regulation of time and space for such events, as well as regulations over noise production; (b) the tactics of adaptation, negotiation and resistance that participants engage in at an everyday level in response to the state's ideologies, policies, laws and strategies; (c) …

Landscape Ecology Of Birds On Mount Leconte, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Andreas P. Damalas
Landscape Ecology Of Birds On Mount Leconte, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Andreas P. Damalas
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Landbirds form a significant component of wildlife resources in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The present study explored how forest structure and composition of deciduous-coniferous ecotones influenced diversity, richness, and relative abundance of bird species and how bird species responded to the spruce-fir community.
Using a form of the variable-circular plot method, I conducted audio-visual censuses of diurnal birds on Mount LeConte. I established 212 geo-referenced census points on six trails, which were used as gradient-oriented transects (gradsects). I measured habitat characteristics at the same census points. I used forest community types for each point on gradsects to delineate …
The Application Of A System Of Systems Analysis To Assessments Of National Power, George T. Hodermarsky
The Application Of A System Of Systems Analysis To Assessments Of National Power, George T. Hodermarsky
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation proposes an approach and methodology for the utilization of the fundamentals of systems theory as an aid to national security decision-making. At its core is an examination of the elements of nations' or non-state actor's power resources. The product of the analysis is the compilation of a set of nodes, and the relationships between these, upon which actions may be taken to achieve desired effects. Since the boundaries between the subsystems of power resources are flexible and permeable, and there will be interactions between elements in different subsystems, a system of systems approach is essential so that the …
Telecommunications Technology And Sovereignty: Effects On States As Information Transfer Increased From The Speed Of Oxcart To The Speed Of Light, James H. Radford
Telecommunications Technology And Sovereignty: Effects On States As Information Transfer Increased From The Speed Of Oxcart To The Speed Of Light, James H. Radford
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Sovereignty---the absolute and unlimited power of the state---provides independence of action. Information about actions or intentions of competitors, enemies, or even friends, arriving after extended periods of time, resulted in responses to fait accompli. When information travels nearly instantaneously, states must consider potentially rapid international reactions before the fact. This suggests that since a state's freedom of action has been abridged, the nature of their sovereignty has altered.
This study pursues the research question: In what ways does telecommunications technology affect state sovereignty? The evolution of sovereignty is compared to development of telecommunications technology over four distinct eras, each …

Spatial Relationships Of Grassland Net Ecosystem Carbon Dioxide Exchange In A First-Order Agricultural Basin In Southern Ontario, Patrick S. Chahil
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study quantified the midday (10:00 – 16:00) summer source/sink CO2 relationships of various land-use types, particularly grass-dominated riparian areas, using dynamic chamber techniques, while evaluating the relative contribution of root and microbial components towards the overall soil respiration. The influence of nearby agriculture and was related to elevated N and P, which were 40 and 1000% larger, respectively. A site adjacent to cropped fields showed similar (within 8%) study averaged soil respiration as an open grassland site, but 22% lower soil respiration than a riparian site 250-300 m downstream, which is adjacent to an open grassland fallow. A maple …

From The Farm To The Faculty: The Educational Odyssey Of Paulus Falck, Johan Windmuller
From The Farm To The Faculty: The Educational Odyssey Of Paulus Falck, Johan Windmuller
The Bridge
During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, thousands of immigrants from Denmark settled in the American Midwest. Some of them brought with them educational concepts and religious convictions they hoped to pass on to future generations; to do so they created a variety of educational and religious institutions scattered across several Midwestern states. What follows is a study of Paulus Falck, who passed through several of these institutions.
Reducing Risks From Natural Disasters In Rhode Island: A Case Study Of Local Hazard Mitigation Planning In North Kingstown, Bonnie M. Dixon
Reducing Risks From Natural Disasters In Rhode Island: A Case Study Of Local Hazard Mitigation Planning In North Kingstown, Bonnie M. Dixon
Open Access Master's Theses
The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 provided strengthened federal incentives for local hazard mitigation planning. In Rhode Island, this process is currently being carried out by each municipality with guidance from the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA). This analysis of the local hazard mitigation planning process in Rhode Island is based on the author's participation in hazard mitigation planning in North Kingstown, and a review of the scholarly literature.
Six points are identified on which Rhode Island's process could be improved: l) more use of specialized expertise, 2) continuous staffing of planning and implementation, 3) greater coordination between jurisdictions, …

The Supreme Court And Voting Rights: A More Complete Exit Strategy, Grant M. Hayden
The Supreme Court And Voting Rights: A More Complete Exit Strategy, Grant M. Hayden
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
To the great relief of many observers, the Supreme Court has recently become more deferential to state legislatures with respect to their political redistricting plans. The only problem is that the Court appears to be in no mood to revisit some of the cases that got it entangled in the political thicket to begin with - the ones rigorously applying the one person, one vote standard. Indeed, it recently issued a summary affirmance of a lower court decision that tightened up its already exacting standards regarding population equality. As a result, the Court's partial retreat from politics is doing more …

Geography, Citizenship And Volunteering: Some Uses Of The Higher Education Active Community Fund In Geography, Richard Yarwood
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Voluntary work with local communities has been advocated as beneficial for geography students, higher education institutions and the public. In England, the Higher Education Active Community Fund (HEACF) has recently been established by the Government to encourage staff and students in higher education to undertake voluntary work in local communities. This paper reports on the use of HEACF funding to develop voluntary work projects for geography students at the University of Plymouth. It examines the student experience of voluntary working and concludes that it helps students to develop as both geographers and active citizens in their local communities.

Environmental Impacts Of Technological Change In Bangladesh Agriculture: Farmers' Perceptions, Determinants, And Effects On Resource Allocation Decisions, S Rahman
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This article measures the impact of modern technology adoption in raising farmers' environmental awareness and the impact of farmers' environmental awareness on resource use by utilizing survey data from 21 villages in three agro‐ecological regions of Bangladesh. The econometric analysis is based on the application of the Tobit model explaining farmers' environmental awareness in the first stage and a profit function examining environmental awareness and resource use relationships in the second stage. Results reveal that the “level” and “duration” of involvement with modern technology raises farmers' environmental awareness, and that farmers' environmental awareness reduces resource use including chemicals. Farmers, who …

Streets Of Stability And Change: A Comparative Analysis Of Dublin City-Centre Streetscapes (1972-2002), Edmund O'Callaghan, Don O'Riordan
Conference proceedings
Studies on city streetscapes are relatively rare in the retail literature despite the fact that retail offerings at any point in time approximate the volume and nature of societal consumption. This study examines past and present composition of streetscape activity and street ownership in Dublin city centre. The data generated will constitute a historical record of both the degree of stability and the degree of change in the Dublin streetscape. Findings illustrate the volatility of the street and the importance for central places of fulfilling both social and economic roles. The study also identifies the need for more innovative and …
