A Critical Analysis Of No Child Left Behind, Kelli Brooke Dostal Jan 2005

A Critical Analysis Of No Child Left Behind, Kelli Brooke Dostal

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this thesis is multifaceted. First, I will provide an overview of the main provisions of the NCLB Act. For each provision, I will review a range of criticisms of the new legislation expressed by prominent scholars in the field of education. These criticisms include problems with: underfunding, accountability of testing requirements, expanded parental options, local control and flexibility, the validity of evidence-based practices, and the assessment of teacher quality. Finally, I will examine how these concerns have been addressed by the legislators and offer some thoughts on the on the appropriateness of NCLB.

Remote Sensing Of Corridor Landscapes: A Case Study Of The National Road, Wheeling, West Virginia., Brian N. Renzella Jan 2005

Remote Sensing Of Corridor Landscapes: A Case Study Of The National Road, Wheeling, West Virginia., Brian N. Renzella

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research is an investigation of how remote sensing can be used to supplement traditional methods of corridor management planning. Cultural resource inventory for corridor and interpretive management practices is an important component of applications for the designation of a selected route as Scenic Historic American Byways through the National Scenic Byways Program. A case study of a section of the National Road near Wheeling, West Virginia, showed that contemporary and historic aerial photography can facilitate the identification of possible impacts on a route’s historic integrity. A previously designated historic route, the National Road was America’s first federally funded interstate …

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick Jan 2005

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the seventeenth century a vibrant group of Native Americans, the Monytons, controlled southern West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky. The effects of contact with Europeans destabilized their societies as far inland as the Ohio Valley. This began the process which eventually pushed most Monytons from the region. The Five Nations Iroquois, pressured by social changes farther north, attacked the Monytons further drawing people out of the Ohio Valley. A growing southern Indian slave trade also contributed to the decay of Monyton dominance in the region. A central point in this thesis is that Monytons formed and reformed traditions to deal …

Trade And Plunder Networks In The Second Seminole War In Florida, 1835-1842, Toni Carrier Jan 2005

Trade And Plunder Networks In The Second Seminole War In Florida, 1835-1842, Toni Carrier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Second Seminole War in Florida, 1835-1842, was a time of disruption and upheaval for all of those unfortunate enough to occupy the territory of Florida during the seven years of this protracted battle over Seminole removal to the West. Illicit trade was a major factor which enabled the Seminoles to resist removal for such an extended period. Illicit trade requires outside assistance. Documentary evidence suggests that such assistance was rendered by Spanish fishermen, English and American wreckers, slaves, free blacks, Native Americans and white American settlers. This thesis examines the evidence for plunder and illicit trade, and the possible …

Mapping The Major Axis Of Tephra Dispersion With A Mesoscale Atmospheric Model: Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua, Marc A. Byrne Jan 2005

Mapping The Major Axis Of Tephra Dispersion With A Mesoscale Atmospheric Model: Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua, Marc A. Byrne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Models of tephra fallout are used to assess volcanic hazards in advance of eruptions and in near-real-time. Current models often approximate the wind field using simplistic assumptions of the atmosphere that cannot account for typical variations in wind velocity that occur in time and three-dimensional space. Here, a widely used mesoscale atmospheric model is used to improve forecasts of the location of the major axis of dispersion for erupting plumes. The Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research fifth-generation Mesoscale Model (MM5) specializes in atmospheric prediction for regions on the order of ten to hundreds of kilometers on a side. …

Unemployment, Inequality And Terrorism: Another Look At The Relationship Between Economics And Terrorism, Kevin B. Goldstein Jan 2005

Unemployment, Inequality And Terrorism: Another Look At The Relationship Between Economics And Terrorism, Kevin B. Goldstein

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper builds on existing research on the determinants of terrorism by looking at new measures of poverty in addition to political freedom, population fractionalization, and other country characteristics. The findings of this paper reinforce the conclusions of existing literature that political freedom is a key determinant of terrorism, with the greatest risk coming from countries that are middling between liberal democracy and authoritarian control. Further, this paper supports recent conclusions that linguistic fractionalization and geography are both related to terrorist risk as well. The new finding in this paper is that adult unemployment rate is also a significant predictor …

Walden: A Sacred Geography, Joy Whiteley Ackerman Jan 2005

Walden: A Sacred Geography, Joy Whiteley Ackerman

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

In this study, I explore Walden as a place of pilgrimage. Walden Pond is located in Concord, Massachusetts, a place associated with Henry David Thoreau, a 19th century icon of American environmentalism. The site of his simple dwelling (and the focus of his book by the same name) is now a state park and national landmark that receives over half a million recreational users and tourists each year, in addition to visitors with a particular interest in Thoreau’s life and writing. I took two approaches to Walden’s sacred geography, using phenomenological methods to explore the poetics of pilgrimage and a …

Regionalisation And Singapore's Transborder Industrialisation: A New Perspective On Suzhou Industrial Park, Xun Cai, Lu Gao, Caroline Yeoh Jan 2005

Regionalisation And Singapore's Transborder Industrialisation: A New Perspective On Suzhou Industrial Park, Xun Cai, Lu Gao, Caroline Yeoh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The dynamics of international economic competition have prompted governments to re-examine accustomed policies, and search for alternative strategies, in order to re-position their economies for the future. This paper takes a look at Singapore’s search for a competitive positioning in the global marketplace, and focuses on the city-state’s much-publicized, and controversial, flagship project in China, viz, the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). This strategic initiative is premised on the perceptions that Singapore’s positive reputation with multinational corporations, and ‘guanxi’ (or connections) with regional governments, will give the regional sites a strategic advantage in the competition for foreign investments. Earlier studies have …

Born In The Borderlands, Living For Unity: The Story Of A Peacebuilder In Northern Uganda, Emiko Noma

Kroc IPJ Research and Resources

Women on the frontline of efforts to end violence and secure a just peace seldom record their experiences, activities and insights – as generally there is no time, or, perhaps, no formal education that would help them record their stories. The Women PeaceMakers Program is a selective program for leaders who want to document, share and build upon their unique peacemaking stories. Selected peacemakers join the IPJ for an eight-week residency. Women PeaceMakers are paired with a Peace Writer to document in written form their story of living in conflict and building peace in their communities and nations. While in …

An Analytical Framework Of Science Parks And Technology Districts With An Application To Singapore, Francis Koh, Winston T. H. Koh, Ted Feichin Tschang Jan 2005

An Analytical Framework Of Science Parks And Technology Districts With An Application To Singapore, Francis Koh, Winston T. H. Koh, Ted Feichin Tschang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper analyzes the question: What does it take for science parks and technology districts to evolve and grow? We propose an analytical framework to examine the gestation, evolution, and sustainability of science parks and related but broader regional phenomena such as technology districts. The framework comprises three aspects of a science park's development: growth mechanisms, level of technological capabilities, and nature of its integration with national or global markets. The main growth mechanisms we identify are government-led infrastructure provision, agglomeration effects, and continual self-renewal through the creation of new businesses. We apply this framework to analyze Singapore's science park …

Regional Co-Operation And Low-Cost Investment Enclaves: An Empirical Study Of Singapore's Industrial Parks In Riau, Indonesia, Caroline Yeoh, Darren Lim, Adeline Kwan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Infrastructure can be unreliable and administration subject to corruption in Asia's rapidly developing economies. Foreign investment is thus drawn to privileged investment enclaves, as well as in and around centers of international infrastructure. This context provides opportunity for Singapore-styled industrial parks, through the provision of superior infrastructure, the ability to negotiate investment concessions at inter-government level and, where existing, through the links to influential Chinese business groups in the investment location. Batamindo Industrial Park and Bintan Industrial Estate in Indonesia were the prototypes. This paper revisits the Parks, and offers a stock-take on the challenges confronting these flagship projects. Evidence …

Fourth Graders' Development Of Multimedia Portfolios., Veronica D. Kuminkoski-Yurt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A review of the literature indicates there is a need for alternative assessment practices for elementary students. Seven fourth grade students in a small rural school will learn how to construct an electronic portfolio that will exhibit their progress and achievement. The contents of the portfolio must include student participation in the selection as well as provide evidence of self-reflection. This study researches a computer-based portfolio, which uses HyperStudio software. This program will allow students to create sound, video, graphics, and animation during the construction process. As students build their multimedia portfolios, they will learn how to use technology as …

Hydrography, Suspended Sediments, Chlorophyll A, Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter And Optical Characteristics Of The Pearl River (Zhujiang) Estuary During July And November, 1998, Wendy Lynn Woods Jan 2005

Hydrography, Suspended Sediments, Chlorophyll A, Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter And Optical Characteristics Of The Pearl River (Zhujiang) Estuary During July And November, 1998, Wendy Lynn Woods

Open Access Dissertations

The Pearl River (Zhujiang) is the second largest river in China and the largest in southern China, with a strongly seasonal discharge driven by Asian monsoon rainfall patterns. Optical characteristics of the plume region are expected to strongly affect light limitation of primary production and the interpretation of satellite remote sensing data. The river is enriched with nutrients from agriculture, aquaculture, and human waste disposal, and experiences frequent phytoplankton blooms. An understanding of factors controlling phytoplankton primary production is currently lacking, but is essential for effective water quality management. This study reports on the hydrography (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, …

Bone Dispersion, Weathering, And Scavenging Of Cattle Bones, Melinda Potmesil Jan 2005

Bone Dispersion, Weathering, And Scavenging Of Cattle Bones, Melinda Potmesil

Nebraska Anthropologist

In this research project, the goal was to study the pattern of disbursement of cattle bones from the site of death, observe any signs of scavenger marks and categorize the degree of weathering on the bones. In order to have a comparative data set, three sites with different characteristics were chosen. The three sites were chosen because of the ability to date the death of each cow, the length of time between each death, and the different locations, which each animal died The oldest site was a one-year-old yearling heifer which died in May of 1992. The next site was …

An Analysis Of The Shifts In Cultural Flows Between The United States And Germany, 1890-1929., Misty D. Rodeheaver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the period from the last decade of the nineteenth century to the start of the Great Depression to explore the dynamics of popular cultural flow from the United States and Germany. World War I serves as the medium for the emergence of drastic changes in the popular cultural structures of both states. This paper underscores the influence of the war as a seminal event transforming the cultural exchange between America and Germany, as well as provides an analysis of several cultural modes of expression such as music, film, architecture, and the press. Prior to World War I, …

The Ecological Need For Prescribed Fire In Sequoia And Kings Canyon National Park, United States Of America., Chad E. Rowan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introdution Forests throughout the West may require prescribed fire or thinning to reduce fire hazard and restore ecological processes. Aim The purpose of this study is to identify areas outside the range of historical variability based on the Time Since Last Fire (TSLF) relative to pre-Euroamerican fire return intervals. These areas with long TSLF relative to the historic fire return interval have high fire hazard and would be given high priority for prescribed burns. Location This study was performed in topographically rugged terrain ranging in elevation from 485 to 4,392m in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, California, USA. …

The Effects Of Roads And Culverts On Stream And Stream-Side Salamander Communities In Eastern West Virginia., Ryan Lee Ward Jan 2005

The Effects Of Roads And Culverts On Stream And Stream-Side Salamander Communities In Eastern West Virginia., Ryan Lee Ward

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Roads and culverts have many effects on stream salamanders. We examined 120 culvert crossings in the Shavers Fork and Dry Fork watersheds in eastern West Virginia. Complete barriers to salamander passage occurred at 55.0% of the sites visited and partial barriers at 34.2%. Analyses showed that 20.6% of the total stream length in the Dry Fork watershed and 18.4% in the Shavers Fork watershed were isolated by barriers. We conducted salamander sampling at 16 streams and used Akaikeís Information Criterion to select the best a priori models explaining salamander diversity, richness, and abundance. Roads benefited disturbance tolerant species while negatively …

The Case For Sidney Rigdon As Author Of The Lectures On Faith, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2005

The Case For Sidney Rigdon As Author Of The Lectures On Faith, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Twentieth century attempts to include the "Lectures on Faith" in the writings of Joseph Smith, Jr., provoked this comprehensive survey of historical evidence and carefully designed authorship testing of the text. Every credible approach reaches the same conclusion. Sidney Rigdon wrote the Lectures on Faith, likely without help from Joseph Smith or any others. These Lectures are characterized by both teachings and language that Rigdon may have retained from his recent discipleship with Alexander Campbell. The published Lectures follow both the form and content of lectures given and then published by frontier phenomenon Charles Finney. The decision to insert these …

The Determinants Of State Work Attachment Strategy Choices And The Effects Of Work Attachment Strategies On Welfare Recipients, Former Recipients, And Poverty., Kyoung Hag Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores how national factors such as the high performance bonus, work participation rate penalty, and caseload reduction credits from federal government influence state work attachment strategy choices. In addition, this study examines the effects of state work attachment strategies, such as lifetime limits, sanctions, and work requirements, on the employment and earning outcomes for welfare recipients in various states, along with the poverty rates in those states and the employment and economic status of former welfare recipients. Using three multivariate regression methods such as OLS regression, logistic regression, and ordered logistic regression using SPSS, this study analyzes administrative …

Agenda Setting And Denial In The States. Nonprofit Hospital Tax Exemptions: A North Carolina Case Study., Linda Struyk Millsaps

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research has two objectives. First, it examines the nature of state-level agenda setting, comparing it to the prevailing federal level theories of agenda setting and agenda denial. Specifically it examines state tax exemptions for nonprofit hospitals in North Carolina to determine if this policy arena follows acknowledged theories of agenda setting and denial, or if there is something unique about tax policy that creates a different agenda setting dynamic. Areas of focus included the status of nonprofit hospital property tax exemptions on the policy agenda and how the issue came to that position. Interviews with legislators, lobbyists, hospital and …

Political Economy Of Railway Extensions In Kenya: The Case Of The Uasin Gishu Railway 1901-1930, John Mwaniki Mwaruvie Jan 2005

Political Economy Of Railway Extensions In Kenya: The Case Of The Uasin Gishu Railway 1901-1930, John Mwaniki Mwaruvie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The history of the construction of the Uasin Gishu railway demonstrates the complexity of formulating and implementing a colonial development project. It involved an array of actors with divergent interests. As result, the project became the most controversial railway extension in Kenya, which some critics have called a "colonial scandal." The main areas of controversy involved the altering of the original route for the Kisumu to Mumias railway, which was meant to serve the most productive African district in favor of a line starting from Nakuru via Uasin Gishu to Mumias to cater for the interests of European settlers who …
