Streets Of Stability And Change: A Comparative Analysis Of Dublin City-Centre Streetscapes (1972-2002), Edmund O'Callaghan, Don O'Riordan

Conference proceedings

Studies on city streetscapes are relatively rare in the retail literature despite the fact that retail offerings at any point in time approximate the volume and nature of societal consumption. This study examines past and present composition of streetscape activity and street ownership in Dublin city centre. The data generated will constitute a historical record of both the degree of stability and the degree of change in the Dublin streetscape. Findings illustrate the volatility of the street and the importance for central places of fulfilling both social and economic roles. The study also identifies the need for more innovative and …

Gis-Based Site Suitability Analysis For Planning Confined Animal Feeding Operations In Iowa, Brian Lance Bakker Jan 2005

Gis-Based Site Suitability Analysis For Planning Confined Animal Feeding Operations In Iowa, Brian Lance Bakker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are becoming increasingly common on the Iowa landscape. These structures produce a very large number of livestock in a small area. The production of livestock is essential to the economy of Iowa, creating billions of dollars in revenue. However, when production is confined to small areas, large amounts of byproducts are produced that can cause a threat to the environment surrounding the areas of production. Thus, there is a need for careful planning, particularly the selection of suitable locations for future CAFO development. Currently, locations for CAFOs are simply chosen according to a producer's preference …

An Evaluation Of Crash Cluster Identification Methodologies: A Case Study Of Iowa, Leonard Sitji Bombom Jan 2005

An Evaluation Of Crash Cluster Identification Methodologies: A Case Study Of Iowa, Leonard Sitji Bombom

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the US, crashes are a leading cause of death and disability. To effectively counter this problem, measures are aimed at locations with high crash risks. One common method to determine these "hazardous" locations is to identify clusters of crashes, also referred to as hotspots or blackspots. Several methodologies have been developed to achieve this aim. However, there is no consensus as to what method(s) is "correct." This study evaluates some of the methodologies in the CrimeStat statistical program that are used to cluster crashes with the aim of determining those most suitable for certain crash types (younger drivers, failure …

Russian Immigration To The Usa, 1990-2003, Alexandra Mikhailovna Bozheva

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The last decade of the 20th century was marked by an important event on the European political map, the USSR's disintegration and the formation of new states. The collapse of the Soviet Union and consequent changes in the economic and social lives of its former population caused an increase in migration between former republics, and migration flow abroad. Regarding the Russian Federation, international emigration from its territory was directed mostly toward three countries: Germany, Israel and the USA. The period 1990-1991 can be called the starting point of a new wave of Russian emigration, and this is true in relation …

Extraction Of Transportation Infrastructure From Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, James Paul Gerjevic Jan 2005

Extraction Of Transportation Infrastructure From Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, James Paul Gerjevic

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The goal of this study was to extract transportation infrastructure features from hyper-spectral imagery using data from the high resolution Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). A "Minimum Noise Fraction" (MNF) and a classification and regression tree (CART) were used to reduce the number of spectral dimensions to be analyzed. Then, hyperspectral classifiers such as the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), Mixture-tuned matched filtering (MTMF) and mixture-tuned matched filtering combined with classification and regression tree (MTMF-CART) were used to extract the transportation infrastructures from the image using different image processing software such as ENVI and ERDAS IMAGINE. Finally, WinTopo software was used …

Molecules, Morphology, And Biogeography: An Analysis Of The Phylogeny And Taxonomy Of The Physaria Reediana Species Complex (Brassicaceae), Benjamin R. Grady

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The taxonomy of Physaria has continually been in a state of flux, especially certain groups of species within the genus. The Physaria reediana species complex (sensu Rollins) is an example of one of these problematic groups. The systematics of the Physaria reediana species complex was examined by a combination of techniques. A Bayesian analysis of 71 aligned sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) provided a fairly well-supported phylogeny (mean posterior probability per node: 0.5429) of a portion of the genus, which included the. species in the complex. Recent nodes showed the highest statistical …

A Web-Based Intelligent Spatial Decision Support System For Planning Snow Removal Operations, Shriram Ilavajhala Jan 2005

A Web-Based Intelligent Spatial Decision Support System For Planning Snow Removal Operations, Shriram Ilavajhala

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Providing speedy and cost-effective snow removal management during winter months proves to be an overwhelming task for the local and government personnel. Considering the importance and the massive costs involved in snow removal operations, it is essential that the snowplowing operations be carefully and efficiently planned, so as to minimize the costs and provide a quick response. However, the existing methods for snowplowing planning operations are mostly handled manually. For example, the resource allocation and management is done manually without using any analytical tool for optimization, and the routing is done often times without considering the least costly route to …

Monitoring Spatial And Temporal Water Quality Changes In Iowa Lakes Using Airborne Hyperspectral Imagery, Nathan Robert Green Jan 2005

Monitoring Spatial And Temporal Water Quality Changes In Iowa Lakes Using Airborne Hyperspectral Imagery, Nathan Robert Green

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has identified more than 20,000 water bodies across America as polluted mainly due to agricultural non-point source pollution. Current techniques for monitoring and assessing the quality of waters in streams, reservoirs, lakes, and estuaries involve on site measurements and/or the collection of water samples for subsequent laboratory analyses. While this approach yields accurate measurements for a point in time and space, it is expensive, laborious, and cannot provide a temporal or spatial overview of water-quality trends. To overcome this liability, state and local agencies are seeking alternative and more cost effective methods. A …

Processual Media Theory, Organised Networks And The Politics Of Information Societies, Ned Rossiter

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis setss out to re-evaluate and re-think theories of communications media and theories of democracy formation under translocal, global and networked conditions. In order to do this, the thesis brings a combination of social and communications theory, political philosophy and "radical empiricism" to the study of the socio-technical dimensions of Net cultures. It examines the ways in which emergent networks of creativity, labour, organisation and intervention challenge the sovereignty of the state-corporation nexus, which functions tu restrict access and control information flows in the interests of security and profit. The thesis investigates the relationship between emergent forms of organisation …

A Journey In (Re)Claiming Teaching : A Critical Ethnography Of Cape Neal High School, Janean Robinson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is a journey reflecting on my professional practice as a teacher. It also captures the lived experience of other teachers' stories as they were gathered from the ethnographic site; a secondary senior high school.

These collections draw out common themes, issues and dilemmas that teachers face within a dominant managerial discourse. These conversations also provide a 'voice' for those who are often controlled by their own labour into silence. "Dialogue is a moment where humans meet to reflect on their reality as they make and remake it" (Shor & Freire, 1987, p. 98).

I use the 'school effectiveness …

Reforming Higher Education In Saudi Arabia: The Use Of Telecommunications Technology, Abdullah Altowjry Jan 2005

Reforming Higher Education In Saudi Arabia: The Use Of Telecommunications Technology, Abdullah Altowjry

Theses

Internet technology has become a powerful tool since its advent. Online learning is a byproduct of Internet usage and is instrumental in higher education. In the United States, the use of online learning, also known as distance learning, is widespread. It is used in almost all educational institutions. Even third world countries, which are traditionally lagging behind in any educational or sociological enterprise, are now attempting to catch up with distance learning education. Some educational institutions in the Middle East, for example, have been using distance learning in place of traditional classroom instruction. In Saudi Arabia, there is a great …

By Any Other Name?: On Being “Regarded As” Black, And Why Title Vii Should Apply Even If Lakisha And Jamal Are White, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Mario L. Barnes

Faculty Scholarship

Forty years after the passage of Title VII, scholars Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan reported the results of their groundbreaking study, Are Emily and Greg More Employable Than Lakisha and Jamal? A Field Experiment on Labor Market Discrimination. Their study revealed that simply having an African American-sounding name significantly decreased one's opportunity to receive a job interview, regardless of occupation or industry. The results of Bertrand and Mullainathan's investigation raise critical questions about the effectiveness of Title VII as a remedy for race discrimination in the hiring market today, especially as employment discrimination has evolved into different forms. As shown …

Vernacular Exposures At The Aillet House: Anthropological Interpretations Of Material Culture And Cultural Change, Kelli Ostrom Jan 2005

Vernacular Exposures At The Aillet House: Anthropological Interpretations Of Material Culture And Cultural Change, Kelli Ostrom

LSU Master's Theses

The thesis project developed from preliminary archaeological testing in 1999 at site 16WBR45, the original location of the Aillet House. The results of the testing were informative as they suggested the placement of the house and attested to casual activity on the porch. However, the results certainly did not answer the need for a more discerning interpretation of the historic house museum known as the Aillet House, currently on display at the West Baton Rouge Parish Museum. I collaborated with the museum in 2004 to bring to their current interpretive program anthropological insights gained from archaeological remains, an architectural survey …

Long-Term Changes And Variability In Northern Hemisphere Circumpolar Vortex, Kalyn Mackenzie Wrona Jan 2005

Long-Term Changes And Variability In Northern Hemisphere Circumpolar Vortex, Kalyn Mackenzie Wrona

LSU Master's Theses

Variability in the hemispheric-scale atmospheric circulation can be directly linked to variations in surface environmental features, such as temperature, precipitation, and pollutant transport. One indicator of the behavior of the hemispheric-scale circulation is the circumpolar vortex (CPV). This research utilizes a geographic information system (GIS) approach to determine the variability in the northern hemisphere (NH) CPV. Specifically, the area, shape, and centroid of the December, January, February, April, July, and October NHCPV are analyzed for 1959 – 2001 because these features may provide insight about relationships between hemispheric-scale circulation and global temperature change throughout the year. A “circularity ratio” is …

Dental Evidence For Division Of Labor Among The Prehistoric Ipiutak And Tigara Of Point Hope, Alaska, Felicia Madimenos Jan 2005

Dental Evidence For Division Of Labor Among The Prehistoric Ipiutak And Tigara Of Point Hope, Alaska, Felicia Madimenos

LSU Master's Theses

Among archaeological specimens, teeth can provide insight into the behaviors and cultural practices of a population. Inuit specimens are ideal for studying dentition because of the unique way teeth are used as tools. The prehistoric Ipiutak (ca.100 B.C. – A.D. 500) and Tigara (ca. A.D. 900 –1700) of Point Hope, Alaska, represent two environmentally similar, although culturally and temporally different, populations. Based on associated archaeological finds, the Ipiutak do not represent a whaling culture. Instead, they focused on hunting smaller sea mammals and caribou. Conversely, the Tigara represent a typical Inuit whaling culture. Whaling cultures depend on a distinct division …

"Let Me Play A While": Storytelling Characters And Voices In The Works Of Mark Twain, William Faulkner, And Lee Smith, Kenneth Mark Broyles

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the difference between narrators and characters in fiction who tell stories. It also argues that traditional orality persists in American culture and is a significant influence in the fiction of Mark Twain, William Faulkner and Lee Smith. In their work, they try to overcome what some perceive as a structural discrimination inherent in the novel and imbue their characters' speaking voices with authority that is determined by something other than their position in the structural hierarchy. All three authors attempt to give their characters speaking voices which are not necessarily inferior to the narrative or authorial …

Analysis Of The Talus And Calcaneus Bones From The Poole-Rose Ossuary: A Late Woodland Burial Site In Ontario, Canada, Adrienne Elizabeth Penney Jan 2005

Analysis Of The Talus And Calcaneus Bones From The Poole-Rose Ossuary: A Late Woodland Burial Site In Ontario, Canada, Adrienne Elizabeth Penney

LSU Master's Theses

This study reports on the demography and osteological profile of the Poole-Rose Ossuary. Excavated in 1990 under the direction of Heather McKillop and at the request of the Alderville First Nation, the Poole-Rose Ossuary is a Late Woodland burial site in southern Ontario, Canada. Lack of European artifacts in the burial suggests that this site predates European contact. The Poole-Rose Ossuary is radiocarbon dated to A.D. 1550 ± 50 years. The skeletal remains were commingled. This ossuary likely represents the mass re-burial known as the “Feast of the Dead” or the “Kettle.” For the most part, closely related individuals were …

Trends In Extreme Daily Temperature Events In The South-Central United States, Gregory S. Bohr Jan 2005

Trends In Extreme Daily Temperature Events In The South-Central United States, Gregory S. Bohr

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Extreme daily temperatures are meteorological events that can have significant impacts on human and natural systems. As natural and anthropogenic climate changes occur, the frequency of extreme events is likely to change. Because extremes do not change linearly with mean temperatures, it is important to directly examine the record of extremes. This dissertation analyzes the temporal pattern of daily extremes over 1948-2001 in the south-central United States, and identifies significant changes in frequency and persistence, as well as relationships between extreme events and atmospheric circulation.

A global warming of approximately 0.6 Centigrade has occurred over the past century, and further …

A Radiographic Study Of The Impact Of Race And Sex On 1st And 2nd Molar Development, Suzanne Price Jan 2005

A Radiographic Study Of The Impact Of Race And Sex On 1st And 2nd Molar Development, Suzanne Price

LSU Master's Theses

The assessment of child development requires standards in order to compare an apparent physiologic age to an actual chronological age. In assessing chronological age of an individual, the use of multiple indicators is ideal and important in determining age at death. For individuals under the age of about 21 years, dental development is the most reliable indicator of age. Research aimed at understanding the variation in tooth formation due to race and sex will help to more accurately determine the age at death of remains of subadult individuals. This project examined the impact of race, sex, and time period on …

Java As A Western Construct: An Examination Of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' "The History Of Java", Natalie A. Mault Jan 2005

Java As A Western Construct: An Examination Of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' "The History Of Java", Natalie A. Mault

LSU Master's Theses

Among nineteenth-century books on Indonesia published in England, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles’ "The History of Java" holds a unique position. While serving as Lieutenant Governor in Indonesia, Raffles went to great length in documenting the island’s history, culture, architecture and contemporary civilization. His observations were published in a two-volume study entitled "The History of Java," whose most outstanding feature is the sixty-six engravings it includes. Ten of these engravings are colored aquatints by William Daniell, illustrating Javanese life and costume. Published in 1817, Raffles’ "History of Java" is considered, to the present day, a highly important work, particularly because of …
