Spatial And Spatial-Temporal Analysis Of Mountain Pine Beetle Infestations At A Landscape Scale, Trisalyn Anna-Lisa Nelson
Spatial And Spatial-Temporal Analysis Of Mountain Pine Beetle Infestations At A Landscape Scale, Trisalyn Anna-Lisa Nelson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The impact of the current mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) epidemic in British Columbia underscores the need for scientifically informed management practices. During an epidemic it is necessary to manage large areas and an understanding of landscape scale spatial and spatial-temporal processes is required. With the recent availability of large area, multi-temporal data sets there are new opportunities for landscape scale studies of the mountain pine beetle over space and through time. In this thesis large area spatial and spatial-temporal patterns of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. Latifolia) mortality are explored using point data collected through helicopter surveys. As …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The continued decline of Columbia River salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) populations has long focused concerns on habitat changes upriver, particularly the effects of large hydroelectric dams. Increasing evidence that ocean conditions strongly influence salmon production, however, has raised questions about the importance of the estuarine environment to salmon and whether the hydropower system has affected estuarine-rearing habitats. In response to Northwest Power Planning Council recommendations, we initiated a review of what is known about the effects of the hydroelectric system on the hydrology, habitats, and ecology of the Columbia River estuary. Our goal was to develop recommendations for improving estuarine conditions …

Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel
Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Territorial privacy, one of the central categories of privacy protection, involves setting limit boundaries on intrusion into an explicit space or locale. Initially, the Restatement (Second) of Torts, which defined the privacy tort of intrusion as applied by courts, most notably designated two classes of excluded areas: "private" places in which the individual can expect to be free from intrusion, and "non-private" places, in which the individual does not have a recognized expectation of privacy. In the physical world, courts ultimately held, almost uniformly, that the tort of intrusion could not occur in a public place or in a place …

Predicting Plant Extinction Based On Species-Area Curves In Prairie Fragments With High Beta Richness, Brian J. Wilsey, Leanne M. Martin, H. Wayne Polley
Predicting Plant Extinction Based On Species-Area Curves In Prairie Fragments With High Beta Richness, Brian J. Wilsey, Leanne M. Martin, H. Wayne Polley
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Species-area relationships and island biogeography theory are commonly used to predict how species richness will decline with fragmentation. There are a variety of largely untested assumptions in these approaches, including the assumptions that populations are distributed uniformly before fragmentation, and that local extinctions are due to effects of small population sizes. If populations are not distributed uniformly, then populations can be abundant locally but rare globally. This would cause extinction rates to be smaller than predicted. We tested extinction theory by developing estimates of the number of plant species that should be present in small tallgrass prairie fragments and then testing …
Habitat Corridors Function As Both Drift Fences And Movement Conduits For Dispersing Flies, Joanna H. Fried, Douglas J. Levey, Jerome Hogsette
Habitat Corridors Function As Both Drift Fences And Movement Conduits For Dispersing Flies, Joanna H. Fried, Douglas J. Levey, Jerome Hogsette
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Corridors connect otherwise isolated habitat patches and can direct movement of animals among such patches. In eight experimental landscapes, we tested two hypotheses of how corridors might affect dispersal behavior. The Traditional Corridor hypothesis posits that animals preferentially leave patches via corridors, following them into adjacent patches. The Drift Fence hypothesis posits that animals dispersing through matrix habitat are diverted into patches with corridors because they follow corridors when encountered. House flies (Musca domestica L.), a species that prefers the habitat of our patches and corridors, were released in a central patch (100x100 m) and recaptured in peripheral patches …

Climatic matching and pre-release performance evaluation were useful predictors of parasitoid establishment in a retrospective analysis of a classical biological control program against Bemisia tabaci biotype ‘‘B’’ in the USA. Laboratory evaluation of 19 imported and two indigenous parasitoid species in quarantine on B. tabaci showed that the Old World Eretmocerus spp, had the highest attack rate. The climate matching program CLIMEX was used to analyze the establishment patterns of five Old World Eretmocerus spp. introduced to the Western USA. The top matches ±10% for the climate of the area of introduction and origin of the introduced parasitoids always included …
Invisible Symmetries: A Retrospective Of The Work Of Lindsay Vickery, Jonathan Mustard
Invisible Symmetries: A Retrospective Of The Work Of Lindsay Vickery, Jonathan Mustard
Sound Scripts
The following is a retrospective of the work of Western Australian born composer Lindsay Vickery. The paper examines the composer's diverse output in composed and improvised instrumental and electronic music and multimedia works. A nine digit string of numbers that the composer calls a "cypher", ties together a significant portion of Vickery's output for almost two decades of compositional activity, but the sense in which these works are about something else is palpable in each and every one. Iconic pieces where a serial-like method is an anathema and cypher based pieces all seem to point to a structure the composer …

This paper describes the application of Carroll’s scenario-based design and claims analysis as a means of refinement to the initial design of a digital library of geographical resources (GeogDL) to prepare Singapore students to take a national examination in geography. GeogDL is built on top of G-Portal, a digital library providing services over geospatial and georeferenced Web content. Beyond improving the initial design of GeogDL, a main contribution of the paper is making explicit the use of Carroll’s strong theory-based but undercapitalized scenario-based design and claims analysis that inspired recommendations for the refinement of GeogDL. The paper concludes with an …
Refocusing On Race, Grant M. Hayden
Refocusing On Race, Grant M. Hayden
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This paper, prepared for a symposium on voting rights in the George Washington Law Review, is a call to refocus attention on the role of race in politics. In recent years, many voting rights scholars have shifted their attention away from the plight of minority voters. Indeed, the issue of race came up in this symposium only obliquely, if at all, as part of a discussion of other issues. And this is more than a bit unusual, for race has been a driving force in the development of much of the law of democracy over the last several decades.

Microwave Backscatter Modeling Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, Haroon Stephen, David G. Long
Microwave Backscatter Modeling Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, Haroon Stephen, David G. Long
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
The Sahara Desert includes large expanses of sand dunes called ergs. These dunes are formed and constantly reshaped by prevailing winds. Previous study shows that Saharan ergs exhibit significant radar backscatter (σ°) modulation with azimuth angle (f). We use σ° measurements observed at various incidence angles and f from the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT), the SeaWinds scatterometer, the ERS scatterometer (ESCAT), and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's Precipitation Radar to model the σ° response from sand dunes. Observations reveal a characteristic relationship between the backscatter modulation and the dune type, i.e., the number and orientation of the dune slopes. Sand dunes …
Modeling Microwave Emissions Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, Haroon Stephen, David G. Long
Modeling Microwave Emissions Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, Haroon Stephen, David G. Long
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
Sand seas (ergs) of the Sahara are the most dynamic parts of the desert. Aeolian erosion, transportation, and deposition continue to reshape the surface of the ergs. The large-scale features (dunes) of these bedforms reflect the characteristics of the sand and the long-term wind. Radiometric emissions from the ergs have strong dependence on the surface geometry. We model the erg surface as composed of tilted rough facets. Each facet is characterized by a tilt distribution dependent upon the surface roughness of the facet. The radiometric temperature (T(b)) of ergs is then the weighted sum of the T(b) from all the …

Metaconversations: Ongoing Discussion About Teaching Research Writing, P. S. Mcmillen, E. Hill
Library Faculty Research
This article is a follow up to an earlier publication that developed the rationale for using conversation as a metaphor to teach research writing. We presented this proposed teaching approach at several conferences, including WILU in May 2005 at Guelph, Canada. The discussions with participants in these presentations validated the tenets of the conversational metaphor for research writing. Here we provide a description of the research activities in the presentations, the subsequent responses by participants, and our thoughts on these responses. This dialogue between participants and the authors/presenters constitutes the metaconversation about teaching research writing.
An Examination Of Consumer E-Loyalty To Online Travel Intermediaries, Gregory E Dunn
An Examination Of Consumer E-Loyalty To Online Travel Intermediaries, Gregory E Dunn
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Online travel intermediaries such as Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz have controlled the lion's share of the transactions over the Internet in terms of travel search and purchase by offering low prices, increased consumer choice, and enhanced shopping efficiency. Travel suppliers have been fighting harder than ever to keep up with the online travel intermediaries in terms of technology infrastructure and added-value content to re-capture the customers whose loyalty they spent so much time and money cultivating in the first place; The purpose of this research was to identify the antecedents of customer e-loyalty and examine the effects of these loyalty …
Phylogeography And Population Genetic Structure Of Two Anuran Species Inhabiting The Mojave Desert, Jef Ronald Jaeger
Phylogeography And Population Genetic Structure Of Two Anuran Species Inhabiting The Mojave Desert, Jef Ronald Jaeger
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Three studies are presented that apply the principles and methodologies of phylogeography to two anuran species (a frog and a toad) that inhabit the Mojave Desert of North America. The first study evaluates the geographic distributions of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages (clades) within the broadly distributed toad, Bufo punctatus, as these relate to vicariant events hypothesized to have structured desert biotas within North America. Phylogeographic analyses support three clades with distributions corresponding to the Peninsular Desert of Baja, California, Chihuahuan Desert - Colorado Plateau (Eastern), and Mojave - Sonoran deserts (Western). Divergence levels and congruence with postulated vicariant events indicate …
The Differential Impact Of Language Skills On The Wages Of Hispanic Men And Women, Annette Marie Tanori
The Differential Impact Of Language Skills On The Wages Of Hispanic Men And Women, Annette Marie Tanori
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study will look to expand on the work that has been done in regards to the earnings of Hispanics. When compared to other minority groups, Hispanics traditionally earn less. The average household income for Hispanics is 22% less than the national average household income of {dollar}42,000 a year. This study will examine the effect that the language penalty, which is the estimated difference in wages between English and non-English speakers holding other important factors constant, has on the earnings of Hispanic men and women. The data used in the study is taken from the United States Census Bureau, 2000 …
Residence Choices Of Hispanic Neighborhoods In Nevada, Qiong Li
Residence Choices Of Hispanic Neighborhoods In Nevada, Qiong Li
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A well-known characteristic of Hispanic in the U.S. is their tendency to concentrate their settlement area in distinct locations. This study merges aggregate data of localities with micro observations to estimate the joint decisions of residential location and homeownership choice for Hispanics. To address the possibility that the disturbances in the regression may be correlated within groups, we apply a bivarite probit framework clustered by localities (PUMAs), using the Public Use Micro Statistics of Census 2000 data for Nevada. The results suggests that Hispanics choose to live in Hispanic enclaves are characterized by lower income, less English fluency, lower educational …
The Buildings At The Center: Latter-Day Saint Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Aaron James Mcarthur
The Buildings At The Center: Latter-Day Saint Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Aaron James Mcarthur
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Tabernacles are a largely overlooked feature of communities in the Mormon Culture Region. Though the tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City has world-wide recognition, very little has been written about the other 78 that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built between 1847 and 1953. This thesis discusses the religious, cultural, and social motivations behind the planning and construction of tabernacles, as evidenced by developments such as the Plat of the City of Zion and the Priesthood Reorganization of 1877, as well as the numerous uses of these buildings. The significance of the buildings in the …

Attitudinal And Behavioral Assessments Of Generations X And Y At The Palms Casino Resort, Ch-A Mosley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Las Vegas area casino hotels have recently begun to vie for the attention and business of Generations X and Y. This is evidenced by the influx of night clubs, lounges, and party-like pool scenes in Strip properties. The purpose of the study is to utilize the Palms Casino Resort's young adult clientele to determine what attributes they find appealing about it. The data garnered through primary empirical research revealed implications for potential marketing initiatives and future research. This project was both quantitative and qualitative in nature.
An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Net-Migration To Clark County, Scott Charles Mitchell
An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Net-Migration To Clark County, Scott Charles Mitchell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Clark County has experienced rapid population growth during the 1990s. The reasons for this rapid growth are a combination of proximity to other population centers, economics, quality of life, and demographic factors. Using OLS and GLS regression methods on pooled time-series county-level data between the years 1990 and 1997, several factors proved to be significantly correlated with the net-migration to Clark County. The most important factors affecting net-migration to Clark County are climate and demographics.

Beyond Megalopolis: Exploring America’S New “Megapolitan” Geography, Robert E. Lang, Dawn Dhavale
Brookings Mountain West Publications
The Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech identifies ten US “Megapolitan Areas”— clustered networks of metropolitan areas that exceed 10 million total residents (or will pass that mark by 2040) . Six Megapolitan Areas lie in the eastern half of the United States, while four more are found in the West. Megapolitan Areas extend into 35 states, including every state east of the Mississippi River except Vermont. Sixty percent of the Census Bureau’s “Consolidated Statistical Areas” are found in Megapolitan Areas, as are 39 of the nation’s 50 most populous metropolitan areas. As of 2003, Megapolitan Areas contained less than a …
