Woolf In The Real World, Karen V. Kukil Jan 2005

Woolf In The Real World, Karen V. Kukil

Woolf Selected Papers

The nearly 200 papers delivered at the Thirteenth Internation Conference on Virginia Woolf focused on the ways Woolf engaged the "real world" of her time and the ways her legacy continues to engage "real world" issues now. Thirty essays were selected for publication that relect the life, writings, and afterlife of Virginia Woolf. In addition to the remarks of plenary speakers Carol T. Christ, Lyndall Gordon, Carolyn Heilbrun, and Frances Spalding, the selected papers include essays by Michael Barrett, Susan C. Bourque, Julia Briggs, Maggie Humm, Dianne Hunter, Eleanor McNees, Kathryn Simpson, and Elizabeth Gallaher von Klemperer, among other distinguished …

Red Lake, White Earth And ‘Blackgowns’: The Indian Industrial Schools Of St. John’S Abbey And St. Benedict’S Monastery, 1884-1896, Thomas Reichert

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

How and more importantly, why did the Benedictines become involved in off-reservation Industrial Schools? In this thesis, it is my goal to answer these questions. The opening of the schools was the result of three factors. First, the Benedictines subscribed to the popular beliefs and stereotypes about the Indians and what should be done with them. Second, the material situation of the mission, as well as the relationship between the Benedictines and the other involved parties on the reservation, created a situation where an off-reservation venture would seem desirable. Third, the financial situation of St. John's and St. Benedict's would …

An Inventory Of Rangelands In Part Of The Broome Shire, Western Australia, W E. Cotching

Technical Bulletins

The inventory of rangelands in part of the Broome Shire in Western Australia was undertaken by DAFWA between 1989 and 1990. It describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The survey of part of the Broome Shire …

Part 4: The Wheels Of Justice: Our Regional Circuit Courts, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2005

Part 4: The Wheels Of Justice: Our Regional Circuit Courts, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

We trace what happens to parties that enter our Circuit Court system as a plaintiff or defendant. In 2003, the nine Circuits that are wholly or partially located within Hampton Roads dealt with 81,008 cases (35 percent civil and 65 percent criminal). Large proportions of these cases are dismissed or settled before they come to trial and very few cases are heard by a jury. We examine a variety of efficiency measures relating to the region’s Circuit Courts and conclude they are operating rather well.

The Impact Of Enterprise Zones On Resident Employment: An Evaluation Of The Enterprise Zone Programs Of California And Florida: Dissertation Summary, Joel Elvery Jan 2005

The Impact Of Enterprise Zones On Resident Employment: An Evaluation Of The Enterprise Zone Programs Of California And Florida: Dissertation Summary, Joel Elvery

Dissertation Awards

This dissertation estimates the impact of two geographically targeted economic development programs on the employment of people living in the targeted areas. This question is difficult to address for a number of reasons. Unlike in most program evaluation problems, the process that determines the outcome of interest (resident employment) happens at a lower level of aggregation than the process that determines selection for treatment. Therefore, standard program evaluation techniques have to be modified to address this issue. The programs I study, the enterprise zone programs of California and Florida, were designated at a very detailed level of geography, making it …

Food Security Emergencies And The Power Of Eminent Domain: A Domestic Legal Tool To Treat A Global Problem, Robert H. Trudell Jan 2005

Food Security Emergencies And The Power Of Eminent Domain: A Domestic Legal Tool To Treat A Global Problem, Robert H. Trudell

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

Part I of this Note examines how food insecurity threatens global security. Part II will examine ways that food insecurity is treated today through food aid and charity donated from the wealthy countries of the world. Part II will also discuss agricultural productivity: how it was improved tremendously in the twentieth-century using "Green Revolution" methods of agricultural production, and why such methods are not the optimal solution for the crisis ahead in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Part III first examines how intellectual property rights function in the United States and throughout the world, and then ends with a narrower …

Second Language Acquisition Through Reading, Comprehensible Input, Limited Grammar, And Cultural Study: A Handbook For The Secondary Language Teacher, Judith A. Willis-Nicolai Jan 2005

Second Language Acquisition Through Reading, Comprehensible Input, Limited Grammar, And Cultural Study: A Handbook For The Secondary Language Teacher, Judith A. Willis-Nicolai

All Graduate Projects

Second language practitioners share the goal that their students reach communicative competence in the target language. Recent research findings regarding learning, however, have spawned a debate that has driven teachers to rethink the efficacy of the traditional practice of direct instruction of language usage. The Standards for Foreign Language Learning, as well as research that examines second language acquisition, support content-based instructional strategies that employ sustained language use, cultural infusion, and contextual grammar instruction in a constructivist classroom. This project reviews that research, then synthesizes and applies the findings of the research through the development of units that implement strategies …

"Racially-Tailored" Medicine Unraveled, Sharona Hoffman Jan 2005

"Racially-Tailored" Medicine Unraveled, Sharona Hoffman

American University Law Review

In June 2005, the FDA approved BiDil, a heart failure medication that is labeled for use only by African-Americans and thus is the first treatment of its kind. The drug likely portends a future of growing interest in "race-based" medicine. This phenomenon is emerging at the same time that scientists, in light of the Human Genome Project, are reaching an understanding that "race" has no biological meaning, and consequently, "racially-tailored" medicine is both puzzling and troubling. This Article explores the reasons for the new focus on "racial-profiling" in medicine. It analyzes the risks and dangers of this approach, including medical …

Multiple Identities, Citizenship Rights And Democratization In Africa, 'Lai Olurode Jan 2005

Multiple Identities, Citizenship Rights And Democratization In Africa, 'Lai Olurode

Ethnic Studies Review

This particularistic and exclusionary form of identity politics has intensified in recent years within and among nations..... It is responsible for some of the most egregious violations of international humanitarian law and, in several instances, of elementary standards of humanity.... Negative forms of identity politics are a potent and potentially explosive force. Great care must be taken to recognise, confront and restrain them lest they destroy the potential for peace and progress that the new era holds in store (Kofi Annan, The Guardian, (Nigeria) 1997:8).

Technocracy And Democracy: Conflicts Between Models And Participation In Environmental Law And Planning, James D. Fine, Dave Owen Jan 2005

Technocracy And Democracy: Conflicts Between Models And Participation In Environmental Law And Planning, James D. Fine, Dave Owen

UC Law Journal

Our environmental laws create an unfortunate paradox. They mandate science-based planning, and that mandate often translates into a practical or legal requirement to use complex simulation models. These laws also contain provisions for public participation. When agencies engage in technical decisionmaking, however, and particularly when they use complex yet uncertain models, the reasoning and risks underpinning decisions becomes difficult for public participants to understand and critique. As a result, legal mandates for science-based and participatory planning come into conflict. This conflict is inherent in many environmental statutes, and is acute in the State Implementation Plan (SIP) process required by the …

Geographic Routing In Social Networks, David Liben-Nowell, Jasmine Novak, Ravi Kumar, Prabhakar Raghavan, Andrew Tomkins Jan 2005

Geographic Routing In Social Networks, David Liben-Nowell, Jasmine Novak, Ravi Kumar, Prabhakar Raghavan, Andrew Tomkins

Computer Science Faculty Work

We live in a ‘‘small world,’’ where two arbitrary people are likely connected by a short chain of intermediate friends. With scant information about a target individual, people can successively forward a message along such a chain. Experimental studies have verified this property in real social networks, and theoretical models have been advanced to explain it. However, existing theoretical models have not been shown to capture behavior in real-world social networks. Here, we introduce a richer model relating geography and social-network friendship, in which the probability of befriending a particular person is inversely proportional to the number of closer people. …

Regionalisation And Singapore's Transborder Industrialisation: A New Perspective On Suzhou Industrial Park, Xun Cai, Lu Gao, Caroline Yeoh Jan 2005

Regionalisation And Singapore's Transborder Industrialisation: A New Perspective On Suzhou Industrial Park, Xun Cai, Lu Gao, Caroline Yeoh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The dynamics of international economic competition have prompted governments to re-examine accustomed policies, and search for alternative strategies, in order to re-position their economies for the future. This paper takes a look at Singapore’s search for a competitive positioning in the global marketplace, and focuses on the city-state’s much-publicized, and controversial, flagship project in China, viz, the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). This strategic initiative is premised on the perceptions that Singapore’s positive reputation with multinational corporations, and ‘guanxi’ (or connections) with regional governments, will give the regional sites a strategic advantage in the competition for foreign investments. Earlier studies have …

Born In The Borderlands, Living For Unity: The Story Of A Peacebuilder In Northern Uganda, Emiko Noma

Kroc IPJ Research and Resources

Women on the frontline of efforts to end violence and secure a just peace seldom record their experiences, activities and insights – as generally there is no time, or, perhaps, no formal education that would help them record their stories. The Women PeaceMakers Program is a selective program for leaders who want to document, share and build upon their unique peacemaking stories. Selected peacemakers join the IPJ for an eight-week residency. Women PeaceMakers are paired with a Peace Writer to document in written form their story of living in conflict and building peace in their communities and nations. While in …

Regional Co-Operation And Low-Cost Investment Enclaves: An Empirical Study Of Singapore's Industrial Parks In Riau, Indonesia, Caroline Yeoh, Darren Lim, Adeline Kwan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Infrastructure can be unreliable and administration subject to corruption in Asia's rapidly developing economies. Foreign investment is thus drawn to privileged investment enclaves, as well as in and around centers of international infrastructure. This context provides opportunity for Singapore-styled industrial parks, through the provision of superior infrastructure, the ability to negotiate investment concessions at inter-government level and, where existing, through the links to influential Chinese business groups in the investment location. Batamindo Industrial Park and Bintan Industrial Estate in Indonesia were the prototypes. This paper revisits the Parks, and offers a stock-take on the challenges confronting these flagship projects. Evidence …

Fourth Graders' Development Of Multimedia Portfolios., Veronica D. Kuminkoski-Yurt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A review of the literature indicates there is a need for alternative assessment practices for elementary students. Seven fourth grade students in a small rural school will learn how to construct an electronic portfolio that will exhibit their progress and achievement. The contents of the portfolio must include student participation in the selection as well as provide evidence of self-reflection. This study researches a computer-based portfolio, which uses HyperStudio software. This program will allow students to create sound, video, graphics, and animation during the construction process. As students build their multimedia portfolios, they will learn how to use technology as …

Hydrography, Suspended Sediments, Chlorophyll A, Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter And Optical Characteristics Of The Pearl River (Zhujiang) Estuary During July And November, 1998, Wendy Lynn Woods

Open Access Dissertations

The Pearl River (Zhujiang) is the second largest river in China and the largest in southern China, with a strongly seasonal discharge driven by Asian monsoon rainfall patterns. Optical characteristics of the plume region are expected to strongly affect light limitation of primary production and the interpretation of satellite remote sensing data. The river is enriched with nutrients from agriculture, aquaculture, and human waste disposal, and experiences frequent phytoplankton blooms. An understanding of factors controlling phytoplankton primary production is currently lacking, but is essential for effective water quality management. This study reports on the hydrography (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, …
