Opportunities For Video Lottery Terminal Gambling In Montréal: An Environmental Analysis, Jason A. Gilliland, Nancy A. Ross

Geography & Environment Publications

Background: In the province of Québec, video lottery terminal (VLT) gambling has proliferated under government control since 1 993. The aims of this study were to describe the spatial distribution of video lottery terminals (VLTs) in the municipalities of Montréal and Laval and to identify neighbourhood socio-economic conditions associated with their distribution.

Method: Locations of all establishments holding VLT licences in Montréal and Laval (n=834) were geocoded by their street address. Boroughs (n=49) were characterized by socio-economic indicators (unemployment, educational attainment, lone parenthood), a neighbourhood distress index, and measures of VLT prevalence, VLT adoption and VLT density.

Results: VLT prevalence, …

Mental Health Encounters In Critical Access Hospital Emergency Rooms: A National Survey, David Hartley Phd, Mha, John A. Gale Ms, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Stephenie L. Loux Ms, Anush Yousefian Hansen Ms, Ma

Mental Health / Substance Use Disorders

Previous studies have investigated the rural provision of mental health services by FQHCs and CMHCs (Wagenfeld, 1994; Hartley et al., 2002). However, there is little documentation of the extent to which ERs provide mental health services in rural communities. This paper provides new information about the role of rural ER’s in the provision of mental health services, gathered from a structured telephone survey of ER managers in a nationally representative sample of Critical Access Hospitals, and from service logs completed by ER staff. Specifically, we have sought to determine 1) what proportion of ER encounters involve mental health pathology; 2) …

Geographic Distribution Of The Southeast Asian Turtles In The Genus Malayemys (Testudines: Bataguridae), Timothy R. Brophy Jan 2005

Geographic Distribution Of The Southeast Asian Turtles In The Genus Malayemys (Testudines: Bataguridae), Timothy R. Brophy

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Members of the genus Malayemys, Malayan snail-eating turtles, are small batagurid turtles reaching maximum sizes of 22 cm carapace length (Srinarumol, 1995). They have dark brown to mahogany carapaces with three discontinuous keels, yellow plastra with large dark blotches on each scute, and large black heads adorned with yellow or cream-colored stripes that extend onto their necks (Ernst et al., 2000). Malayemys inhabit lowland freshwater habitats throughout Southeast Asia including ponds, canals, streams, swamps, marshes and wet rice fields. These are diurnal bottom dwellers that feed primarily on mollusks (Smith, 1931; Taylor, 1970; Nutaphand, 1979; Srinarumol, 1995; Ernst et al., …

The People Of Bram Stoker's Transylvania, Duncan Light Jan 2005

The People Of Bram Stoker's Transylvania, Duncan Light

Journal of Dracula Studies

One of the defining features of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the “specific and detailed geographical context that sets this novel apart from other gothic novels” (Florescu & McNally 5). Indeed, although Stoker had not visited Transylvania, he is known to have read widely in preparing Dracula.1 While his historical research has come under particular scrutiny, little attention has been paid to his representation and understanding of the region’s geography.2 As a human geographer with research interests in Romania, I find that there is something not “quite right” about Stoker’s Transylvania. In particular, where are the Romanians? And why are there …

An Earthy Enigma: The Role Of Localism In The Political, Cultural And Economic Dimensions Of Media Ownership Regulation, Paul Cowling Jan 2005

An Earthy Enigma: The Role Of Localism In The Political, Cultural And Economic Dimensions Of Media Ownership Regulation, Paul Cowling

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article examines the Federal Communications Commission's public interest principle of localism and its role in media ownership regulation, particularly the National Television Station Ownership rule. The article explains the enigmatic concept of localism by approaching it from several angles, including other regulatory spheres, such as banking and antitrust; Canadian nationalism; historical broadcast regulation; federalism; and contemporary debates on media ownership. While * explaining what localism means, the article identifies the territorial impulse behind media ownership regulation and its link with territorial reference points in the self-determination of national and local communities. In doing so, the article constructs a simple …

Historical Notes On Whooping Cranes At White Lake, Louisiana: The John J. Lynch Interviews, 1947–1948, Gay M. Gomez, Roderick C. Drewien, Mary Lynch Courville

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

In May 1939 biologist John J. Lynch of the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey conducted an aerial survey that documented the existence of a non-migratory population of whooping cranes (Grus americana) near White Lake in southwest Louisiana. Lynch found 13 cranes, including 2 pre-fledged young, confirming breeding. Lynch’s survey occurred, in part, because fur trappers and alligator hunters working in the White Lake marshes had informed the biologist of the cranes’ presence and habits. Lynch continued his contacts with these knowledgeable marsh users, and in 1947 and 1948 interviewed at least 7 individuals. In 2001, M. L. Courville, …

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Excavations in 1990 in North-West Iceland documented a stratified series of small turf structures and associated midden deposits at the eroding beach at Akurvík which date from the 11th–13th to the 15th–16th centuries AD. The site reflects a long series of small discontinuous occupations, probably associated with seasonal fishing. The shell sand matrix had allowed excellent organic preservation, and an archaeofauna of more than 100,000 identifiable fragments was recovered. The collections are dominated by fish, mainly Atlantic cod, but substantial amounts of whale bone suggest extensive exploitation of strandings or active whaling. This paper briefly summarizes the excavation results, presents …

My Reconstructed Life, Eugen Schoenfeld Jan 2005

My Reconstructed Life, Eugen Schoenfeld

KSU Press Legacy Project

Memories tell us that we are bound by a golden chain with those who preceded us and those who come after us. We gain strength from memories.

I remember in 1944 traveling for two days in a freight car with padlocked doors and windows covered with barbed wire. No one in the car knew our destination. Now and then we glimpsed a name of a city where the train was shunted to sidings waiting for a clear track. Now and then voices of prayers could be heard. About sunset on the third day, my mother opened a package containing bread …

Influence Of Calcite And Dissolved Calcium On Uranium(Vi) Sorption To A Hanford Subsurface Sediment, Wenming Dong, William Ball, Chongxuan Liu, Zheming Wang, Alan Stone, Jing Bai, John M. Zachara Jan 2005

Influence Of Calcite And Dissolved Calcium On Uranium(Vi) Sorption To A Hanford Subsurface Sediment, Wenming Dong, William Ball, Chongxuan Liu, Zheming Wang, Alan Stone, Jing Bai, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The influence of calcite and dissolved calcium on U(VI) adsorption was investigated using a calcite-containing sandy silt/clay sediment from the U. S. Department of Energy Hanford site. U(VI) adsorption to sediment, treated sediment, and sediment size fractions was studied in solutions that both had and had not been preequilibrated with calcite, at initial [U(VI)] ) 10-7-10-5 mol/L and final pH ) 6.0- 10.0. Kinetic and reversibility studies (pH 8.4) showed rapid sorption (30 min), with reasonable reversibility in the 3-day reaction time. Sorption from solutions equilibrated with calcite showed maximum U(VI) adsorption at pH 8.4 ± 0.1. …

Taxonomic Relationships Among Phenacomys Voles As Inferred By Cytochrome B, M. Renee Bellinger, Susan M. Haig, Eric D. Forsman, Thomas D. Mullins

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Taxonomic relationships among red tree voles (Phenacomys longicaudus longicaudus, P. l. silvicola), the Sonoma tree vole (P. pomo), the white-footed vole (P. albipes), and the heather vole (P. intermedius) were examined using 664 base pairs of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Results indicate specific differences among red tree voles, Sonoma tree voles, white-footed voles, and heather voles, but no clear difference between the 2 Oregon subspecies of red tree voles (P. l. longicaudus and P. l. silvicola). Our data further indicated a close relationship between tree voles and albipes, …

A Study Of The Musical, Academic, Leadership, And Extracurricular Achievement Massachusetts All-State Participants, R. Nicholas Tobin

Research & Issues in Music Education

Researchers have noted that the personal attributes of high school all-state participants have not been probed and have expressed surprise at this void in the music education literature (Cole, 1986; Fuller, 1989; Welker, 1997). The purpose of this study was to ascertain, through participant self-report data, the activities and accomplishments of Massachusetts all-state musicians in four areas of student endeavor: music, academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities. Massachusetts all-state participants are high achievers not only in music but also in academics, honors, student government, leadership, athletics, service, and extracurricular activities. Suggestions for further research include broadening similar studies to other states …

Is The System Flawed? Legal Ramifications Of The Bowl Championship Series And Conference Alignment, Josh Helton, Mike Slive Commissioner, Gary Roberts, Andrew Sorenson

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Vice Chancellor Williams:

Let me start -this is really a discussion, or a panel that deals with the BCS and conference alignment. So why don't we just jump right in it, and I think the first question that I would like to ask is --we'll throw it up, really I think I'd like to go to both Mike and Gary on this --why are we seeing all the movement around of the schools from conference to conference? What is this all about?

Gary Roberts:

That's 95% of it. It is schools trying to reposition themselves better in their industry, which …
