Habitat Trails . . . A Manual For Affordable Green Neighborhood Development, Community Design Center Jan 2005

Habitat Trails . . . A Manual For Affordable Green Neighborhood Development, Community Design Center

Community Design Center Project Reports

Habitat Trails is a green affordable neighborhood development consisting of 17 Habitat for Humanity homes. The site is designed as a sponge to work in accord with existing hydrological drainage, catchment, and recharge patterns. Stormwater runoff is retained and treated through a contiguous network of bioswales, infiltration trenches, stormwater gardens, sediment filter strips, and a constructed wet meadow. The integration of a treatment landscape with open space substitutes an ecologically-based stormwater management system for the expensive curb-gutter-pipe solution in civil infrastructure.

Panhandle Regional Health Information Exchange Plan, Agency For Healthcare Research And Quality Jan 2005

Panhandle Regional Health Information Exchange Plan, Agency For Healthcare Research And Quality

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The Plans describes the implementation process. The implementation process will take advantage of the Panhandle’s highly collaborative environment. Partners are aligning, and will be supported to align, their organizations for a change to electronic health information exchange. This collaboration will also enable us to reduce the total cost of ownership for partners who are implementing electronic health records in their entities. We will capitalize on “enterprise architectures” (across all partners) whenever feasible and will create centralized IT functions to support implementation. The process will focus on adopting national standards and creating local policies and protocols to facilitate useable health information …

Changing Festival Places: Insights From Galway, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2005

Changing Festival Places: Insights From Galway, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

This paper focuses on cultural reproduction in arts festival settings. It begins by conceptualizing festival settings as places whose characters derive from a combination of both internally derived traits and a diverse series of interactions with other places. Drawing on case study research conducted in an arts festival setting in Galway in the Republic of Ireland, the discussion identifies how elements indigenous to the place connect and engage with external forces. The study found the process of interacting with other places to be complex, involving much negotiation and adaptation as locales became contexts for re-working an array of often conflicting …

Historical Responses Of Marine Turtles To Global Climate Change And Juvenile Loggerhead Recruitment In Florida, Joshua Reece Jan 2005

Historical Responses Of Marine Turtles To Global Climate Change And Juvenile Loggerhead Recruitment In Florida, Joshua Reece

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marine turtle conservation is most successful when it is based on sound data incorporating life history, historical population stability, and gene flow among populations. This research attempts to provide that information through two studies. In chapter I, I identify historical patterns of gene flow, population sizes, and contraction/expansion during major climatic shifts. In chapter II, I reveal a life history characteristic of loggerhead turtles previously undocumented. I identify a pattern of juvenile recruitment to foraging grounds proximal to their natal nesting beach. This pattern results in a predictable recruitment pattern from juvenile foraging ground aggregations to local rookeries. This research …

Developing An Educational Portfolio And Survey For The New Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center : A Capstone Project ..., Tera Farnsworth

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Environmental interpretation allows people to gain an understanding of their surroundings, know why the environment is important and to have a greater appreciation for the environment as a whole. By creating a visitors center in Santa Cruz the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary would like to create educational programs for the public and students to make people more environmentally aware. The overall goal for my project was to compile a database of informal science education centers in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas, compile a database of schools in Santa Cruz County and use this information to aid in the …

Building The Road To Kathmandu: Notes On The History Of Tourism In Nepal, Mark Liechty

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

"This paper considers the rise of mass tourism in Nepal in the 1960s in light of the historical processes that created images of the Himalayas in the Western imagination. By the 19th century critics of modernity had begun to look to 'The East' in search of the spiritual authenticity they believed lost in the increasingly 'disenchanted' West." Topographic Complexity And Benthic Community Variability Within A Kelp Forest In Monterey Bay, Ca : A Thesis ..., Eric J. Sandoval Jan 2005

Topographic Complexity And Benthic Community Variability Within A Kelp Forest In Monterey Bay, Ca : A Thesis ..., Eric J. Sandoval

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

By understanding species and habitat associations, predictions of species composition can be made about a benthic community based on available habitat. In a kelp forest, topographic complexity can affect an organism, by modifying flow, altering food availability, altering light availability, and provide refuges and barriers that fragment the habitat. There are many qualitative ways to evaluate topographic complexity. Rugosity is a quantitative measure and is defined as the ratio of surface area to planar area. Using habitat maps developed in GIS from multibeam bathymetry data, regions of varying rugosity were mapped in southern Monterey Bay, CA. Associated benthic communities were …

Persistence Of Armor Layers In Gravel-Bed Streams, Peter Wilcock, B. T. Detemple Jan 2005

Persistence Of Armor Layers In Gravel-Bed Streams, Peter Wilcock, B. T. Detemple

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Streambed surfaces are typically coarsened, or armored, at low flows, but there is little evidence of their condition during floods, when significant hydraulic and ecologic disturbance occurs. Some flume experiments have been used to conclude that armor layers wash out during floods, although other experiments have produced a persistent armor layer. In the absence of clear field or flume evidence, we use a surface-based transport model in an inverse prediction of surface grain size as a function of transport rates observed in the field. The predicted surface grain size matches that observed at low flow and indicates that low-flow armor …
