Spatial Linkages Between Decapod Planktonic And Benthic Adult Stages In A Newfoundland Fjordic System, Pedro A. Quijón, Paul V. R. Snelgrove Jan 2005

Spatial Linkages Between Decapod Planktonic And Benthic Adult Stages In A Newfoundland Fjordic System, Pedro A. Quijón, Paul V. R. Snelgrove

Journal of Marine Research

The relative importance of predatory decapod crustaceans in sedimentary communities depends on the spatial variability in their abundance and composition. At the scale of a fjord, such spatial patterns could be related to sill-mediated larval supply. This study examines larval and adult distributions of abundant predatory decapods at six representative sites in a sub-arctic Newfoundland fjord during three consecutive summers. Adult snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and toad crab (Hyas coarctatus, H. araneus) characterized outer areas of the fjord, whereas pandalid shrimp (Pandalus montagui) dominated inner areas, and rock crab (Cancer irroratus) showed …

Geopolitical Analysis Of Terror In Selected U.S. Countries, Aaron M. Goodman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Throughout the world media reports of airplanes crashing into the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C made the front page of every paper almost instantly after September 11, 2001. This unprecedented media event led to the generation of certain key questions in the ways in which the media reports on terrorism. This research is concerned with the ways in which the U.S media has responded to the 9- 11 terrorist attacks through time and space. In examining how U.S based media responds to terrorist attacks we can begin to understand if this response is …

A Study Of The Importance And Implementation Of National Pre-Kindergarten Standards For Language And Literacy As Perceived By West Virginia Directors Of Early Childhood Centers, Judaea Hodge

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examined the difference between levels of importance and implementation for the National Pre-Kindergarten Standards for Language and Literacy (NPKSLL) in four-year-old programs as perceived by West Virginia licensed pre- kindergarten programs directors and the differences based on director’s education level, years of experience, years in present position, program type and size, and the number of four year olds in the program. To examine this relationship, The Early Childhood Language and Literacy Survey (ECELLS) was designed based on the NPKSLL five goals: listening (Goal 1), complex speech (Goal 2), print awareness (Goal 3), story structure (Goal 4) and beginning …

The 19th Century Excavation Of Kent's Cavern, England, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg Jan 2005

The 19th Century Excavation Of Kent's Cavern, England, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Between 1858 and 1880, William Pengelly developed revolutionary new techniques for the archeological and paleontological excavation of cave deposits. His work at Brixham Cave and Kent’s Cavern, England, yielded tens of thousands of specimens from the mid-Pleistocene to the Holocene, settled the intellectual debate over the co-existence of humans and extinct mammals, and accumulated an unparalleled resource for continued study. Although the Brixham Cave work was thoroughly summarized in print, Pengelly never published the plans of his much more thorough and extensive excavations at Kent’s Cavern. Here we present a reconstructed plan of the Pengelly excavations that we hope will …

An Intelligent Aircraft Landing Support Paradigm, Steve Thatcher, Lakhmi Jain, Colin Fyfe Jan 2005

An Intelligent Aircraft Landing Support Paradigm, Steve Thatcher, Lakhmi Jain, Colin Fyfe

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

In this paper we discuss the problems associated with a small remnant of seemingly non eradicable accidents in contemporary aircraft landings and propose three autonomous agents whose task it is to jointly monitor the aircraft and its flight crew. Two of these agents will monitor the path of the aircraft, one armed with prior knowledge of how planes tend to land at a particular airport, the other with the ability to extrapolate forward from the plane’s current position in order to identify potential dangers. The third agent will monitor the flight crew’s behavior for potentially dangerous actions or inactions. These …

Empirical Downscaling Of Wind Speed Probability Distributions, S C. Pryor, Justin T. Schoof, R J. Barthelmie Jan 2005

Empirical Downscaling Of Wind Speed Probability Distributions, S C. Pryor, Justin T. Schoof, R J. Barthelmie

Publications

This paper presents a novel approach to developing empirically downscaled estimates of near-surface wind speed and energy density and results from application of the technique to multiple stations in northern Europe. The downscaling takes a probabilistic approach in that it uses the mean and standard deviation of relative vorticity at 500 hPa and mean sea level pressure gradients computed using output from the ECHAM4/OPYC3 atmosphere-ocean general circulation model as the predictors and parameters of the wind speed probability distribution at surface stations as the predictands. We demonstrate that this approach generates accurate depictions of the wind climate during the conditioning period …

Impact Of Instant Connectivity On Business Productivity: A Study Using The Community Embodiment Model (Cem), Humayun Zafar Jan 2005

Impact Of Instant Connectivity On Business Productivity: A Study Using The Community Embodiment Model (Cem), Humayun Zafar

Theses

The last decade has seen a significant growth in mobile technologies. Predominantly this technology has been relegated to the realm of personal use, but as this work will suggest, cost related effects of such technologies also need to be considered.

For most organizations maximizing operational efficiency is the main reason why new technologies are acquired. However, apart from basic costs, such as total cost of ownership of mobile technologies, other costs (business process reengineering, and employee morale) need to be measured in order to ascertain if an organization can withstand a change to a next-generation system.

This study attempts to …

Highway 12, Christian Probasco Jan 2005

Highway 12, Christian Probasco

All USU Press Publications

Highway 12 is undoubtedly one of not only America's but the world's most scenic highways. From its intersection on the west with Highway 89 south of Panguitch, Utah, it runs up through Red Canyon onto the Paunsagunt Plateau and across Bryce Canyon National Park. It then drops into the Paria River Valley, passes through several tiny villages, crosses some extraordinary (for anywhere but this region) badlands, and descends the Escalante River into Potato Valley. While a driver may justifiably feel she has seen some scenery by that point, the highway is just getting started, for in the next stretch, it …

Sex In The Snow: The Himalayas As Erotic Topos In Popular Hindi Cinema, Philip Lutgendorf

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

"Fantasies about life beyond the front range of the Great Himalaya have been a trope in Indian literature since at least the period of the Sanskrit epics...Such legends appear to persist in popular 20th century narrative through a much-used trope in Bombay cinema: the depiction of the Himalayas as a realm of uninhibited romantic fantasy." Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2005

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs are able to manage their businesses within relatively contained and familiar geographical and cultural circles. With a world economy shrinking every day amid a flood of digital information, today’s entrepreneur is increasingly confronted with opportunities to consider new ways to secure vendors and recruit customers. Many unfamiliar possibilities emerge. Should the entrepreneur venture beyond “comfortable” surroundings to consider international connections? Specifically, what about China? How practical is this fetching business temptation of larger markets and lower-cost subcontractors? What are the social, trade, financial, and political issues? Should a “China strategy” be a true entrepreneurial offensive, or rather a …
