Student Outcomes Assessment: Ntid's Business Careers Department, Kathleen Garlinghouse

Theses

1. The need for the project (What is the severity of the problem or magnitude of the need for the services (local/national): Students graduate from college with a variety of general and specific skills. However, most colleges would have a difficult time "describing" to potential employers the specific skills work related attitudes that their graduates possess. During the last decades, interest has grown in what is called "Student Outcomes Assessment". This term has come to mean the activities undertaken by a college to identify and measure academic and job related skills that the college feels most, if not all, of …

Effects Of Long-Term Administration Of Caffeine In A Mouse Model For Alzheimer’S Disease, William Schleif Sep 2005

Effects Of Long-Term Administration Of Caffeine In A Mouse Model For Alzheimer’S Disease, William Schleif

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A recent epidemiological study suggested that higher caffeine intake reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Caffeine, a widely consumed stimulatory drug, is a non-selective adenosine receptor antagonist that has been shown to increase plasma adenosine levels in rodents. To determine any long-term protective effects of caffeine in a controlled longitudinal study, caffeine was added to the drinking water of APPsw transgenic (Tg) mice between 4 and 9 1/2 months of age, with behavioral testing done during the last 6 weeks of treatment. The average daily intake of caffeine per mouse (1.5 mg) was the human equivalent of 5 …

The Constitutional Right Not To Cooperate? Local Sovereignty And The Federal Immigration Power, Huyen Pham Sep 2005

The Constitutional Right Not To Cooperate? Local Sovereignty And The Federal Immigration Power, Huyen Pham

ExpressO

May the federal government require local governments to cooperate with the enforcement of immigration law or other federal scheme? Or may local governments constitutionally refuse to provide that cooperation?

I use immigration law enforcement as a case study to argue that the current legal framework, which allows the federal government to mandate local cooperation, ignores the significant federalism harms that federal cooperation laws impose. And these federalism harms are not simply limited to the immigration field. In other areas where federal and local governments disagree (e.g., medical marijuana, stem cell research, and physician-assisted suicide), there is similar potential for conflict …

Great Tennis At The 2005 Us Open, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2005

Great Tennis At The 2005 Us Open, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Thirty years ago the country was in a tennis frenzy. Television had discovered the sport and colorful and attractive personalities seemed to be in an endless supply as they paraded before the cameras. Public tennis courts were overcrowded with people from seven to seventy. At the indoor courts of the major cities you were lucky to be able to get a reservation to play between three and four o'clock in the morning. Manufacturers of tennis equipment were making money hand over fist, and the tennis ball factories working around the clock (what we would now term 24/7), could not meet …

Experimental Measurements Of Longitudinal Load Distributions On Friction Stir Weld Pin Tools, Aaron L. Stahl Sep 2005

Experimental Measurements Of Longitudinal Load Distributions On Friction Stir Weld Pin Tools, Aaron L. Stahl

Theses and Dissertations

The longitudinal forces generated from the Friction Stir Welding process are substantial. An understanding of these forces is critical to proper tool design. This study describes a technique to measure the longitudinal force distribution on a friction stir weld pin tool. Total longitudinal forces were recorded on a dynamometer while welding 6061 aluminum with non-threaded pins that varied in length and diameter. A model was developed that characterizes pin force as a function of pin length and diameter. Results suggest that force generally increases with pin length, while forces remain relatively constant with pin diameter. Unexpected force variation was found …

Getting Real About Privacy: Eccentric Expectations In The Post-9/11 World, Jeffrey A. Breinholt Sep 2005

Getting Real About Privacy: Eccentric Expectations In The Post-9/11 World, Jeffrey A. Breinholt

ExpressO

What if science developed technology that would eliminate violent crime on American streets entirely, without jeopardizing civil liberties or personal privacy? This article describes such a scenario, and uses it to take a critical look at some of legal commentary claiming that Americans are bound to lose their rights and privacy if they fail to object to modern tools of domestic security. It concludes that those who have criticize modern scientific applications to the security challenge are overlooking well-established legal doctrines, based on eccentric fears of technology and the nation's law enforcers.
