Reproductive Effort Is Inversely Proportional To Average Adult Life Span., Eric Charnov Jan 2005

Reproductive Effort Is Inversely Proportional To Average Adult Life Span., Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Background: Forty years ago, G.C. Williams predicted that reproductive effort should be inversely related to the average adult life span across species. Aim: Use allometric life-history theory to refine that prediction. Result: Reproductive effort should be inversely proportional to average adult life span, a −1 scaling rule.

Recovering The Lost Worlds Of America's Written Constitutions, Christian G. Fritz Jan 2005

Recovering The Lost Worlds Of America's Written Constitutions, Christian G. Fritz

Faculty Scholarship

Recovering the Lost Worlds of America's Written Constitutions,' originating as the sixth Brennan Lecture delivered at Oklahoma City University Law School on November 7, 2002, explores the transformation of the right of revolution in the wake of the American Revolution. The significance of displacing the singular sovereign in the person of the king with the collective sovereign of 'the people,' gave rise to constitutional understandings that are at odds with today's constitutionalism that emphasizes the necessity of procedural regularity to effect legitimate constitutional revision. The article explores how 'circumvention' of such procedures was consistent with an earlier concept of the …

The Role Of History And Culture In Developing Bankruptcy And Insolvency Systems: The Perils Of Legal Transplantation, Nathalie Martin Jan 2005

The Role Of History And Culture In Developing Bankruptcy And Insolvency Systems: The Perils Of Legal Transplantation, Nathalie Martin

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, Professor Nathalie Martin examines societal attitudes toward debt and financial failure in the context of two global trends, the liberalization of bankruptcy and insolvency laws, and the increased availability of consumer credit around the world. The Article begins, with a description of the history of the U.S. economy, its risk-oriented capitalist ethos, its consumer culture, and its resulting consumer and business bankruptcy laws. The Article next briefly addresses the personal bankruptcy systems of Continental Europe, noting that in some places, U.S.-style bankruptcy systems have been enacted but not necessarily accepted. Professor Martin then discusses new laws being …

Tox Town: An Internet Introduction To Environmental Health And Toxic Chemicals, Cynthia Love, Martha Szczur, Mary Higgins, Erinn Aspinall

Publications

Can a web site present environmental health information to the general public in a fun and compelling manner? This was the goal of the National Library of Medicine's Specialized Information Services when it designed Tox Town. By its nature, chemical data is complex and not often perceived by the general public as relevant to their daily lives. However, many common hazardous materials (e.g., asbestos, carbon monoxide, lead, radon) can have profound health effects if encountered in the everyday environment. Enhanced with lively graphics, sound effects, and animation, Tox Town adds interest to learning about connections between chemicals, the environment, and …

New York City Police Officers' Experiences Of The September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks: An Existential Psychological Study, Cecile S. Irvine Jan 2005

New York City Police Officers' Experiences Of The September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks: An Existential Psychological Study, Cecile S. Irvine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The police officers of the NYPD who responded to the scene of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 faced a sudden and large-scale catastrophe that caused the deaths of many innocent civilians and threatened their own lives. The present study examines the lived meanings of this experience for three police officers who survived the collapse of the Twin Towers while acting in the performance of their duty. Although a great deal of research has been conducted in the field of psychological trauma, the existential meaning of traumatic events for those that live through them …

Toward A Code Of Ethics For Cataloging, Sheila A. Bair Jan 2005

Toward A Code Of Ethics For Cataloging, Sheila A. Bair

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Cataloging is the foundation of librarianship, and catalogers are professionals with special skills that set them apart from the profession in general and give them unique ethical responsibilities. They have power to help or harm on an increasingly global scale, yet very little has been written about the ethical issues faced by catalogers. This paper explores the ethics of cataloging, including encoding, subject analysis, authority control, and copy-cataloging, and examines descriptive and normative aspects in view of James Moor’s just-consequentialist theory and J.J. Britz’s ideas on ethical issues relating to intellectual freedom. A code of ethics for cataloging is offered.

Gay And Lesbian Psychological Well-Being: A Thesis Comprising; Psychological Health In Adults From Sexual Minorities (Literature Review); And, A Comparative Exploratory Study Of The Psychological Well-Being Of Gay Male, Lesbian, And Heterosexual Australian Metropolitan Adults (Research Project), Stephen D. Brown

Theses : Honours

Research into the psychological health of members of sexual minorities has been biased towards a medical model of illness and several methodological difficulties need to be considered to critically interpret findings in this area. This review presents relevant literature on sexual minority stressors, positive coping by sexual minority members, and the mixed findings of between-groups comparative research. The medical model bias is evident in an analysis of the measures of psychological health used in research involving sexual minorities. The thesis of considering psychological health of sexual minorities from the broader perspective that includes both well-being and pathology, and of using …

Introduction To Bimatrices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Matrix theory has been one of the most utilised concepts in fuzzy models and neutrosophic models. From solving equations to characterising linear transformations or linear operators, matrices are used. Matrices find their applications in several real models. In fact it is not an exaggeration if one says that matrix theory and linear algebra (i.e. vector spaces) form an inseparable component of each other. The study of bialgebraic structures led to the invention of new notions like birings, Smarandache birings, bivector spaces, linear bialgebra, bigroupoids, bisemigroups, etc. But most of these are abstract algebraic concepts except, the bisemigroup being used in …

Interval Neutrosophic Sets And Logic; Theory And Applications In Computing, Haibin Wang, Florentin Smarandache, Yan-Qing Zhang, Rajshekhar Sunderraman

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This book presents the advancements and applications of neutrosophics. Chapter 1 first introduces the interval neutrosophic sets which is an instance of neutrosophic sets. In this chapter, the definition of interval neutrosophic sets and set-theoretic operators are given and various properties of interval neutrosophic set are proved. Chapter 2 defines the interval neutrosophic logic based on interval neutrosophic sets including the syntax and semantics of first order interval neutrosophic propositional logic and first order interval neutrosophic predicate logic. The interval neutrosophic logic can reason and model fuzzy, incomplete and inconsistent information. In this chapter, we also design an interval neutrosophic …

Measurement And Control Of Torque Ripple-Induced Frame Torsional Vibration In A Surface Mount Permanent Magnet Machine, Jason Neely, Steven Pekarek, Daniel S. Stutts, Philip Beccue Jan 2005

Measurement And Control Of Torque Ripple-Induced Frame Torsional Vibration In A Surface Mount Permanent Magnet Machine, Jason Neely, Steven Pekarek, Daniel S. Stutts, Philip Beccue

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sensor to measure the stator torsional vibration due to torque ripple produced by a surface mount permanent magnet machine is first described. The sensor is relatively inexpensive and is straight forward to incorporate into a drive system. Experiments are performed to validate that the voltage produced by the sensor is linearly related to torque ripple amplitude. Closed-loop controllers are then described that adjust the stator current harmonics applied to the machine to achieve a commanded average torque while mitigating measured torsional vibration. Simulation and experimental results are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control techniques.

Dissolution, Reactor, And Environmental Behavior Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuel Matrix, Kenneth Czerwinski

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

This project examines inert fuels containing ZrO2 and MgO as the inert matrix, with the relative amount of MgO varied from 30% to 70% in ZrO2. Reactor physics calculations are used to examine suitable quantities of burnable poisons from the candidate elements Gd, Er, or Hf with reactor grade Pu providing the fissile component, with up to 10% of 239Pu. Ceramics are synthesized and characterized based on the reactor physics results. The solubility of the fuel ceramics, in reactor conditions, reprocessing conditions, and repository conditions, are investigated in a manner to provide thermodynamic data necessary for …
