Ethnic Differences Among Maltreated Youths With Respect To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Related Symptoms, Amie Marie Lemos-Miller Jan 2005

Ethnic Differences Among Maltreated Youths With Respect To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Related Symptoms, Amie Marie Lemos-Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Symptoms associated with the development and maintenance of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) were examined in a diverse group of maltreated adolescents. The first hypothesis was that levels of PTSD symptomatology, depression, dissociation, anger, and maladaptive cognitions were expected to significantly differ among African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Multiracial adolescents. The second hypothesis was that ethnicity was expected to significantly moderate a relationship between (1) severity of PTSD as measured by symptomatology, and (2) the expression of related symptoms (i.e., depression, dissociation, anger, and maladaptive cognitions). Regarding hypothesis one, African-Americans reported less depressive symptoms overall than other ethnic groups, with Caucasians and …

Phytoremediation Of Perchlorate By Native And Exotic Riparian Phreatophytes Of The Las Vegas Wash, Nevada, Seth Adam Shanahan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The potential to use native (Salix exigua) and exotic (Tamarix ramosissima) phreatophytes to remediate perchlorate from arid riparian environments was investigated by conducting a hydroponic greenhouse experiment. Salix exigua and Tamarix ramosissima exposed to ammonium perchlorate at concentrations of 10 mg L -1 and 100 mg L-1 removed 15 to 22% perchlorate mass from hydroponic solution, with 55 to 64% of removal being taken up into plant tissue. Total perchlorate taken up by plants or removed from solution was not significantly different between species on a mass or oven dry plant weight concentration basis. Significant differences in tissue specific uptake, …

Ancestral Puebloan Social Hierarchies At Manuelito Plateau, New Mexico, Sali A Underwood Jan 2005

Ancestral Puebloan Social Hierarchies At Manuelito Plateau, New Mexico, Sali A Underwood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Using mortuary and osteological evidence this thesis investigates the hypothesis that social hierarchies based on sex and age existed during the Pueblo II and Pueblo III (A.D. 900-1300) periods on the Manuelito Plateau, New Mexico. Mortuary evidence including burial location, positioning, and grave goods was investigated for differential burial treatment within the Manuelito Plateau population sample. Osteological data pertaining to nutritional stress such as stature, dental pathology, and iron deficiency anemia were investigated to determine if differential access to subsistence resources existed. From the six archaeological sites, 99 individuals were recovered, consisting of 22 males, 21 females, and 47 subadults. …

Uncertainty Analysis Of Radionuclide Transport In The Unsaturated Zone At Yucca Mountain, Feng Pan Jan 2005

Uncertainty Analysis Of Radionuclide Transport In The Unsaturated Zone At Yucca Mountain, Feng Pan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study assessed parametric uncertainty of flow and transport parameters of the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain and its propagation in unsaturated flow and radionuclide transport using the Monte Carlo method. The random fields of hydraulic parameters (matrix porosity, permeability and sorption coefficient) were generated using the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method and used as inputs to a three-dimensional flow and transport code, TOUGH2 developed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. By running TOUGH2 for multiple parameter realizations, means, variances, 5% and 95% percentiles of flow and radionuclide transport simulations were estimated to quantify the optimum predictions and associated predictive …

The Social Significance Of Mint Tea Consumption In Morocco: Reflections On Its Symbolic Representation Of Muslim Faith, Gender Prescriptions, Socio-Economics And Hospitality, Monika Sudakov Jan 2005

The Social Significance Of Mint Tea Consumption In Morocco: Reflections On Its Symbolic Representation Of Muslim Faith, Gender Prescriptions, Socio-Economics And Hospitality, Monika Sudakov

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this analysis is to explore the ways in which the Moroccan ritual of mint tea consumption is symbolic of and informed by the underlying core values of Moroccan culture. In particular, issues of Muslim faith, gender prescriptions, socio-economics and hospitality will be explored in detail as they pertain to the ritual of mint tea consumption. The analysis will show that ultimately "what and how you drink is what you are." Understanding the particular consumptive practices of a culture is key to understanding what is considered to be "right" and "natural" behavior by individuals within that culture.

Performance Evaluation Of Fuel Cell-Battery Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Ryan Mauldin Jan 2005

Performance Evaluation Of Fuel Cell-Battery Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Ryan Mauldin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hybrid electric vehicles that utilize gasoline-powered engines as a base source of power enjoy widespread customer acceptance because of their performance and economy. However, the future generation of these vehicles as well as conventional ones will have to move away from internal combustion engines due to depleting fossil fuel reserves and stricter environmental norms. Hybrid power sources composed of fuel cells and deep cycle batteries combine the high energy density of fuel cells with the high power density of batteries, offering efficient transportation without harmful emissions. This thesis describes the conversion of an electric vehicle into a hybrid fuel cell-battery …

Determinacy And Multiplayer Games, Christine Lee Mckenna Jan 2005

Determinacy And Multiplayer Games, Christine Lee Mckenna

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the field of set theory, two-player infinite games of perfect information are well studied. The determinacy of various classes of such games have led to many important results. Furthermore, such determinacy follows from large cardinal axioms. In this thesis, we are instead interested in such infinite games with more than two players. With the study of two-player games being so fruitful, why aren't such infinite games studied with more than two players?;One difficulty in proving determinacy is that players need not play in any reasonable manner: A player may actually play a move that immediately results in a winning …

Effects Of Temperature And Dissolved Lithium Perchlorate On The Viscoelastic And Dynamic Properties Of Poly(Ethylene Oxide), (Peo) Melts, Radoslav B Bogoslovov

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Poly(ethylene oxide)/lithium perchlorate (PEO/LiClO4) complexes are widely studied as a prototype solid polymer electrolyte in rechargeable lithium-polymer batteries. Characterizing the structure and dynamics of the system in its molten state is important for understanding the role of the polymer environment in lithium ion transport and conductivity. A fiber-optic coupled Fabry-Perot interferometer is employed in the investigation of the electrolyte viscoelastic and dynamic properties, which are both related to the intrachain local mobility and therefore to ion diffusion. The properties of the system are studied as a function of composition, temperature, and frequency. Structural relaxation processes are observed both in the …

A Resource Inputs Model Examining Naep Reading Score Change From 1994-1998: State Median Household Income And Free And Reduced-Price Lunch Percentages Matter, David A. Walker, Shereeza F. Mohammed

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This analysis indicated that from variables theorized to influence score change in NAEP reading scores from 1994-1998, two were the most consistent with the pattern of correlations found in the data. Together, both median household income (AVGINC) and the percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch (FRELCH) had fairly large impacts on reading score change. Additionally, the rate of change in reading scores varied across states. AVGINC had constant growth over time, while FRELCH’s development over time was quite slow in both the initial model and an alternative model.
