Messianic-City: Ruins, Refuge And Hospitality In Derrida, Puspa Damai

English Faculty Research

‘‘Listen first to those who, like myself, did not have to watch TV to know that SOME of L.A. was burning,’’ Derrida wrote to a newsletter in response to the riots triggered by the Rodney King events in 1992, adding, ‘‘L.A. is not anywhere, but it is a singular organization of the experience of ‘anywhere’’’ (‘‘Faxitexture’’ 28). At a time when one hardly needs to watch TV to know that many cities around the world are burning, or are targeted and wounded, bombed and invaded—as if the Biblical injunction, ‘‘Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge …

Background:

To extend the successful experience learnt from the Golden Organic Farming Programme in Tsuen Wan organized by Produce Green Foundation in 2004, a new farming programme entitled “Happy Farming” has been launched in Tuen Mun. A plot of land was leased to Good Tiding Church of Christian National’s Evangelism Commission in Lai Wai Tuen Mun (屯門泥圍佳音福音堂) by the Government. APIAS was invited to design and implement the farming programme in January 2005. Nine volunteers were recruited, including five older people and four youngsters to work together on farming activities including land exploitation, trainings, ploughing, weeding and mass activities such …

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Oxfam Hong Kong commissioned Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS), Lingnan University to conduct a telephone survey and concealed participatory observation in order to recognize the public (Hong Kong people) attitude and perception towards ethnic minorities. Telephone numbers were selected at random from up-to-date residential phone directories and the target population of the study comprised Chinese speaking male and female adults aged 16 or over. The telephone interviews were conducted on 4 and 5 of August 2004 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. 512 interviews were completed from the randomly chosen 917 households, and the response rate was 55.8%. Sticky Wage, Efficiency Wage, And Keynesian Unemployment, Chengze, Simon Fan Jan 2005

Sticky Wage, Efficiency Wage, And Keynesian Unemployment, Chengze, Simon Fan

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper provides a model of involuntary unemployment by combining the insights of the sticky wage theory and the efficiency wage theory. It implies that employed workers tend to supply more effort in response to economic downturns. So, a negative shock to an economy has intriguing impacts on the unemployment. The model also shows that a negative demand shock may have a relatively small effect on output since changes in work effort serve to partially mitigate the effects of the shock. Moreover, it yields some implications that complement the existing “work-sharing” literature.

How Sex Columnists Can Do It Differently In College Newspapers, Kristie A. Martinez Jan 2005

How Sex Columnists Can Do It Differently In College Newspapers, Kristie A. Martinez

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

You could call it college's first sexual taboo in print. You could call it the formula for revolutionizing the way you look at yourself and your sex life. You could call it the most controversial advice you'll probably ever get from a column in a college newspaper. Since the first college sex advice column debuted in 1997 in The Daily Californian, the University of California-Berkeley student newspaper, sex columns have proliferated and spread to college newspapers across the country. New York University, Yale University, Boston College, Oregon State University and even the University of South Florida in Tampa are among …

Web Based Job Application Using Java Server Pages And Microsoft Access, Chris Lettre

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This project examines the development of a computerized database with online access for StaffWorks, Inc. The project utilizes Unified Modeling Language (UML) models and tools to articulate the scope, purpose, and benefits of the new database. StaffWorks, Inc. is currently operating with an inefficient system of creating and storing applications. Candidates currently have to come to the office and fill out a paperbased application. Completed applications are stored in the candidate's file, and filed away for later use. There is a huge opportunity for optimization of this system in order to be more efficient. Many benefits come from switching from …

The Effects Of Lowered State Self-Esteem On The Desire To Collect And Transmit Gossip And Rumor, Sandra Pacheco Pehl Jan 2005

The Effects Of Lowered State Self-Esteem On The Desire To Collect And Transmit Gossip And Rumor, Sandra Pacheco Pehl

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Past research on gossip has primarily examined influences such as personal anxiety, personal significance, credulity, and ambiguity. Some studies have examined self-esteem of the participants, but only trait self-esteem, the amount of self-esteem an individual has in general. This study focuses on one's current or "state" self-esteem. It was predicted that with lowered state self-esteem the participants would both desire to seek rumor and gossip information as well as transmit it. State self-esteem was manipulated by giving false feedback to the participants after having taken a bogus test that ostensibly measured their ability to get along and work well with …

Usa Patriot Act : Fallout Of The War On Terrorism, Teresa Przetocki Jan 2005

Usa Patriot Act : Fallout Of The War On Terrorism, Teresa Przetocki

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

September 11, 2001 was truly a historical day, not only for the United States, but also for all nations of the world. The terrorist attacks of that day dramatically changed the concept of domestic security in the United States. As in times of crisis before, civil liberties have become a target. Therein begins a balancing act between civil liberties and national security. The Bush Administration has shown in the time passed since the attack, that the balance is more one-sided: security measures above anything else. Just six weeks after the September 11th terrorist attack, Congress passed the Uniting and Strengthening …

An Analysis Of Aggression In 30-Month Old Toddlers, Aldjenatu Ellard Romero Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Aggression In 30-Month Old Toddlers, Aldjenatu Ellard Romero

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In recent decades, research on the acquisition of self-regulatory strategies has increased. The toddler years are particularly important for both the family and the child concerning the development of appropriate self-regulatory strategies. Beginning in toddlerhood, children move from being other-regulated (parents helping the child to deal with emotions) as they begin to attempt to control their own emotions. During this transition, some children turn to aggressive strategies during times of frustration. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with the everyday instances of aggression in toddler behavior. I proposed to answer two questions in the study: Is there any …
