Integrated Surface-Plasmon Waveguides For Optical Communications, Adam W. Chamberlain Jan 2005

Integrated Surface-Plasmon Waveguides For Optical Communications, Adam W. Chamberlain

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Integrated optics present a potentially low cost and higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Surface plasmon waveguides (SPWGs) offer a new approach for manipulating light in integrated optical chips. SPWGs provide several advantages over dielectric waveguides. In this study, a fabrication process for SPWGs is developed. SPWGs are fabricated with various lengths and bend radii to allow for study of absorption and bending losses in the waveguides at telecommunications wavelengths (~1550nm). Finite-element method models of straight, bent, and optically coupled waveguides are developed and analyzed.

Barriers To Educational Attainment For Rural Women Exiting Welfare, Lynda W. Carville Jan 2005

Barriers To Educational Attainment For Rural Women Exiting Welfare, Lynda W. Carville

LSU Master's Theses

In this paper I look at 12 women who were on welfare and their barriers to becoming self sufficient through education. They are in rural areas in the state of Louisiana and relied on welfare as a support system. I will examine their abilities to eventually obtain education and stable employment. In this paper, I use the qualitative data provided by Dr. Pam Monroe of Louisiana State University to examine the relationships of schooling, skills and recent work experience to the women’s paths to becoming self-sufficient. This study provides information on the extent to which education leads to job stability …

Graphical Pilot Interface Simulator (Gpis), Jeffry Jorge Handal Jan 2005

Graphical Pilot Interface Simulator (Gpis), Jeffry Jorge Handal

LSU Master's Theses

The thesis develops a graphic interface for a dynamic system simulation implemented in the SIMULINK environment. The dynamic system is a B747-200 modeled as a rigid body with six degrees of freedom. The equations and database of aerodynamic coefficients over the complete flight envelope were provided by NASA’s Langley Research Center for the research project “Aircraft Safety: Managing Control Upsets.” The purpose of the interface is to allow the user to “fly the plane from the keyboard;” i.e., interact with the simulation by manipulating, from the keyboard, the main control surfaces and engine thrust and observing the performance of the …

The Bewitchment Of Intelligence: Language And Ex Post Illusions Of Intention, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2005

The Bewitchment Of Intelligence: Language And Ex Post Illusions Of Intention, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Lawyers who negotiate and litigate over complex deals have an intuitive notion of the value of what they do in connection with the contract. The arguments around technical contract language often are a lawyers' game; in most cases, what is clear would have been clear on a handshake; and what is tightly negotiated bears only a random relationship to the areas of future dispute. If they happen to have drafted tight and clear language around the particular matter in dispute, it is as much luck as foresight. Thereafter complex agreements can have binding effect for years, but most of the …

Protecting Rights In The Age Of Terrorism: Challenges And Opportunities, Rosa Brooks Jan 2005

Protecting Rights In The Age Of Terrorism: Challenges And Opportunities, Rosa Brooks

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Depending on whom you speak to these days (and the mood in which you find them), international law is either practically moribund, or it's more vibrant and important than it has been for years. To take the good news story first, international law issues have been at the forefront of public discourse over the past few years. Pick your issue: the U.N. Charter and the international law on the use of force? The Convention Against Torture? The Geneva Conventions? You'll find it on the front page these days. Journalists are phoning international law professors for background briefings, and students are …

Permeating every facet of life including health care, racial segregation has been a part of the history of the United States since its creation. In fact, the history of African-Americans has been one of tragedy, laced with the hope of equality. This tragedy is a result of three hundred years of slavery, one hundred years of the limited freedom of segregation, three years of the promise of equality granted from the civil rights struggle, and thirty-seven years of resegregation through white flight and institutional racism. Hence, African-Americans have been fighting for the right to freedom, equality, and human dignity for …

Aol Time Warner And The False God Of Shareholder Primacy, Matthew T. Bodie Jan 2005

Aol Time Warner And The False God Of Shareholder Primacy, Matthew T. Bodie

All Faculty Scholarship

The blockbuster merger between AOL and Time Warner, in the twilight of the dot-com boom, is now characterized as perhaps the worst business combination ever. Shareholders lost over $200 billion in value; the deal's architects were forced out in disgrace; and the surviving executives jettisoned the AOL name as if towipe clean our collective memory. Despite the merger's seismic effects, relatively little has been written about its potential legal ramifications. In this article, I suggest that the collapse of AOL Time Warner is a cautionary tale for those who would advocate greater adherence to the norm of shareholder primacy. Before …

The Social, Professional, And Legal Framework For The Problem Of Pain Management In Emergency Medicine, Sandra H. Johnson Jan 2005

The Social, Professional, And Legal Framework For The Problem Of Pain Management In Emergency Medicine, Sandra H. Johnson

All Faculty Scholarship

Although supported by both ethical and pragmatic imperatives, pain treatment faces significant barriers, particularly in the setting of emergency medicine. This article argues that pain management is integral to good patient care and specifically, good emergency care. In order to achieve effective emergency pain management, it is crucial to understand the "root causes" of pain neglect in emergency medicine - i.e. to understand why emergency physicians behave as they do in pain treatment.

This article begins by addressing the neglect of pain in emergency medicine and the dearth of empirical research regarding the causes of this neglect. After considering barriers …

Predictive Congestion Control Mac Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2005

Predictive Congestion Control Mac Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Available congestion control schemes, for example transport control protocol (TCP), when applied to wireless networks results in a large number of packet drops, unfairness with a significant amount of wasted energy due to retransmissions. To fully utilize the hop by hop feedback information, a suite of novel, decentralized, predictive congestion control schemes are proposed for wireless sensor networks in concert with distributed power control (DPC). Besides providing energy efficient solution, embedded channel estimator in DPC predicts the channel quality. By using the channel quality and node queue utilizations, the onset of network congestion is predicted and congestion control is initiated. …

The Influence Of Direct-To-Consumer Advertising: Who Will Talk To Their Doctor As A Result Of Prescription Drug Advertisement?, Hai Dubo Chen

Theses and Dissertations

OBJECTIVES: To identify the types of patients who talk with their physicians as a result of Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) advertising. METHODS: Data were taken from a national survey, "Public Health Impact of Direct-to-Consumer Advertising of Prescription Drugs, July 2001- January 2002", conducted by researchers from Harvard Medical School. Participants (n = 3000) were interviewed by telephone. We constructed a conceptual framework consisting of outcomes (3 types of physician visits), intervention (DTC experience) and five groups of explanatory factors (health beliefs, demographics, health status, socioeconomic status and market factors). Data were analyzed with three multivariate stepwise logistic regressions. The three dependent variables …

Exploring Classical And Contemporary Conception Of Ethos Applied Case-The Rhetorical Ethos Of President George W. Bush, Bobby J. Antrobus

Theses and Dissertations

By exploring classical and contemporary conceptions of rhetorical ethos, this thesis assembles theories of analysis and then applies them in the form of rhetorical analysis of the rhetorical ethos exhibited by President George W. Bush in his presidential speeches. The theoretical investigation reveals the extensive use of the ethical appeal in all manner of rhetorical situations in the contemporary world but especially focuses on how political rhetoric has come to rely predominantly on this persuasive appeal. The study examines several speeches given by President Bush and concludes that his success as president is attributed largely to the sophisticated rhetorical strategies …

An Exploration Of Impediments To Attachment In A Juvenile Offender Population: Comparisons Between Juvenile Sex Offenders, Juvenile Violent Offenders And Juvenile Non-Sex, Non-Violent Offenders, Sharon Kay Funari

Theses and Dissertations

This current study addresses potential impediments to attachment that may differentiate between incarcerated juveniles who have committed sexual crimes and incarcerated juveniles who have not committed such offenses. The exploration of such potential barriers to attachment has been organized around Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model. Subjects were 2948 incarcerated male adolescents adjudicated to the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice and were divided based solely upon adjudicating offense: Juvenile non-violent, non-sexual offenders (JNVNSO, n=1149), Juvenile violent, non-sexual offenders (JVNSO, n=1433) and Juvenile sexual offenders (JSO, n=366). Results indicated that JSOs differed from JNVNSOs and JVNSOs in their histories of sexual abuse as well …

Contractual Incompleteness: A Transactional Perspective, Avery W. Katz Jan 2005

Contractual Incompleteness: A Transactional Perspective, Avery W. Katz

Faculty Scholarship

Recent scholarship in the field of contract law has concentrated on contractual incompleteness-that is, on the fact that except in the simplest and most basic transactions, contracting parties do not work out all of the relevant details and contingencies of their relationship at the outset. The reasons for incomplete contracts are varied. Sometimes parties deliberately leave terms unresolved, trusting future negotiations or social norms to fill in any problems that emerge. Other times, they leave terms unresolved without realizing they have done so, in part because they devote limited attention or resources to their negotiations and in part because contracts …
