Omnivory By The Small Cosmopolitan Hydromedusa Aglaura Hemistoma, Sean Colin, John H. Costello, William M. Graham, John Higgins Iii

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

We investigated the feeding of the small hydromedusa, Aglaura hemistoma (bell diameter < 4 mm), to determine if it occupies a trophic position similar to that of large medusae. Feeding was examined using gut-content analysis of preserved and unpreserved medusae and by analyzing prey-capture events using microvideographic techniques. Analysis of gut contents and prey-capture events revealed that A. hemistoma fed heavily on protistan prey and that it possessed a prey-capture mechanism, specifically a feeding current, that is effective at entraining and capturing protists with low motility. We suggest that many species of small hydromedusae possess prey-capture mechanisms adapted to capture small protistan prey and that many of these small hydromedusae feed omnivorously on microplanktonic prey. The trophic roles of small hydromedusae in different systems are not understood and more studies are needed. However, based on their often high abundances and the cosmopolitan nature, if small hydromedusae …

Flow Patterns Generated By Oblate Medusan Jellyfish: Field Measurements And Laboratory Analyses, John O. Dabiri, Sean Colin, John H. Costello, Morteza Gharib Jan 2005

Flow Patterns Generated By Oblate Medusan Jellyfish: Field Measurements And Laboratory Analyses, John O. Dabiri, Sean Colin, John H. Costello, Morteza Gharib

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Flow patterns generated by medusan swimmers such as jellyfish are known to differ according the morphology of the various animal species. Oblate medusae have been previously observed to generate vortex ring structures during the propulsive cycle. Owing to the inherent physical coupling between locomotor and feeding structures in these animals, the dynamics of vortex ring formation must be robustly tuned to facilitate effective functioning of both systems. To understand how this is achieved, we employed dye visualization techniques on scyphomedusae (Aurelia aurita) observed swimming in their natural marine habitat. The flow created during each propulsive cycle consists of …

Prorocentrum Minimum(Clone Exuv) Is Nutritionally Insufficient, But Not Toxic To The Copepod Acartia Tonsa, Hans G. Dam, Sean Colin

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

This study tested whether the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum is nutritionally insufficient or toxic to the copepod Acartia tonsa. Experiments were carried out with adult female A. tonsa and the P. minimum clone Exuv, both isolated from Long Island Sound. Initially, the functional and numerical responses of A. tonsa feeding on exponentially growing P. minimum cells were characterized. These experiments revealed that A. tonsa readily ingested P. minimum cells, up to the equivalent of 200% of body carbon day−1, but egg production was relatively low, with a maximum egg production rate of 22% of body carbon day …

Ethics In Government At The Local Level, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2005

Ethics In Government At The Local Level, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Efforts to foster ethics in government should begin at the local, rather than state or national, level. City officials and employees make a broad range of decisions that affect the welfare of citizens in many ways. Those actions determine to a large extent whether, on an everyday basis, people have equal access to the benefits and opportunities that government provides. Focusing efforts on city government ethics may also be the best way to build public support for high standards of conduct at all levels of government. If the public comes to expect (and demand) fair treatment and ethical conduct from …

Changing Minds: Proselytism, Freedom, And The First Amendment, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2005

Changing Minds: Proselytism, Freedom, And The First Amendment, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

Proselytism is, as Paul Griffiths has observed, a topic enjoying renewed attention in recent years. What's more, the practice, aims, and effects of proselytism are increasingly framed not merely in terms of piety and zeal; they are seen as matters of geopolitical, cultural, and national-security significance as well. Indeed, it is fair to say that one of today's more pressing challenges is the conceptual and practical tangle of religious liberty, free expression, cultural integrity, and political stability. This essay is an effort to unravel that tangle by drawing on the religious-freedom-related work and teaching of the late Pope John Paul …

Sacrifice, The Common Good, And The Catholic Lawyer, John J. Coughlin Jan 2005

Sacrifice, The Common Good, And The Catholic Lawyer, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

For some two decades since I entered law school, the connection between the philosophy of the human person and law has been of comparative interest to me. My interest was stimulated in no small part by the late Pope John Paul II, who urged that canon law reflect the essential elements of what it means to be human. Comparative legal study of the canon law of the Catholic Church with the law of the liberal state has convinced me of the importance of the understanding of the human person that underpins the law. Canon law and the Catholic intellectual tradition …

Long-Term Cardioprotection With Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibition Against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Role Of Nitric Oxide., Vladimir Paul Daoud Jan 2005

Long-Term Cardioprotection With Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibition Against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Role Of Nitric Oxide., Vladimir Paul Daoud

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have shown that the potent phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor, sildenafil citrate, induces a powerful cardioprotective effect against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rabbit and mouse hearts. However, the effect of this drug in inducing long-term protection against I/R injury remains unknown. The goal of this study was to identify the duration of the protective window of sildenafil citrate as well as vardenafil, a more potent PDE-5 inhibitor. Rabbits were treated with sildenafil (0.7 mg/kg, iv), vardenafil (0.143 mg/kg), or an equivalent volume of saline. After 24 hrs, 48 hrs, 96 hrs, or 7 days of sildenafil treatment, the hearts were …

Novel Strategies In Cardioprotection Against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury, Fadi N. Salloum Jan 2005

Novel Strategies In Cardioprotection Against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury, Fadi N. Salloum

Theses and Dissertations

Cell damage represents a major pathomechanism in many diseases of high clinical interest, such as myocardial infarction (MI), where it plays an important role in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Considerable progress has been made towards identifying physiological and pharmacological agents that play a key role in myocardial preconditioning against I/R injury and also elucidating the molecular changes leading to such protection.Second messengers in cellular signaling pathways, such as cGMP have been well implicated as key players in ischemic and pharmacological preconditioning (PC) of the heart. Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) is an enzyme that specifically hydrolyzes cGMP thereby decreasing its tissue concentration. …

Kierkegaard, Kafka, And The Strength Of “The Absurd” In Abraham’S Sacrifice Of Isaac, Robert A. Darrow Jan 2005

Kierkegaard, Kafka, And The Strength Of “The Absurd” In Abraham’S Sacrifice Of Isaac, Robert A. Darrow

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Søren Kierkegaard and Franz Kafka are admired by a wide spectrum of literary critics and philosophers for their common emphasis on subjectivity and the importance of the individual as opposed to the group. However, because the lives, attitudes, and writings of the two authors were very different, it is of interest to continue to examine their possible interrelationship. Both Kierkegaard and Kafka wrote about the biblical Abraham, and the resulting texts provide material for such an examination, organized around the idea of absurdity. “The absurd” is Kierkegaard’s synonym for the religious level of existence, described in detail in Fear and …

Increasing Returns And The Design Of Interest Rate Rules;, Wei Xiao Jan 2005

Increasing Returns And The Design Of Interest Rate Rules;, Wei Xiao

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We introduce increasing returns to scale into an otherwise standard New Keynesian model with capital, and study the determinacy and E-stability of Taylor-type interest rate rules. With very mild increasing returns supported by empirical research, the conventional wisdom regarding the design of interest rate rules can be overturned. In particular, the "Taylor principle" no longer guarantees either determinacy or E-stability of the rational expectations equilibrium.

The Western Australian Department of Agriculture has prepared this 2005 booklet with the following aim:

To provide budgeting information for farmers, agribusiness, and other students of agriculture to enhance understanding and more informed decision making.

It builds on a previous similar booklet - "Gross Margins Guide 2003" - which was produced in 2002 with Commonwealth Bank sponsorship. 2,500 copies of that booklet were produced and gained wide readership. Gross margins for broad area agriculture had not been published by the Department for the previous 1 O years. Feedback and further requests suggested that an update was necessary - hence this …

Key Grazing Levels (Foo Targets) For Pasture And Sheep Management, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 2005

Key Grazing Levels (Foo Targets) For Pasture And Sheep Management, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock published reports

Food On Offer (FOO) is the amount of pasture in front of an animal, and is measured in kilograms Dry Matter per hectare. Managing pastures to key grazing levels - or FOO targets - can result in improved production of grazing systems in Mediterranean environments which are characterized by slow winter growth, peak spring growth and dry summers. These targets vary according to what production response is required.

This information sheet illustrates key target FOO for sheep grazing annual pastures during autumn and spring.

The Use Of Microsatellite Dna Fingerprinting For Aquaculture And Fisheries Science, Arpita Choudhury Jan 2005

The Use Of Microsatellite Dna Fingerprinting For Aquaculture And Fisheries Science, Arpita Choudhury

Open Access Dissertations

In the past, world fisheries appeared to have unlimited growth and potential. Although consumer demand continues to increase, landings from traditional capture fisheries have fallen dramatically. This has led to the growth of world aquaculture production as well as the development of marine conservation science. It has also fostered the use of molecular techniques in the aquatic sciences. Several types of molecular markers have been employed to assess stock structure, genetic variability, and kinship in fisheries and aquaculture. Currently microsatellite markers appear to be one of the most appropriate tools for research in these areas. The overall objective of this …

The Author's Name As A Trademark: A Perverse Perspective On The Moral Right Of "Paternity"?, Jane C. Ginsburg

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The U.S. Supreme Court in its 2003 decision in Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox, construing the Lanham Federal Trademarks Act, deprived authors of their principal legal means to enforce attribution rights in the U.S. I have elsewhere criticized the Dastar Court's analysis, and have urged amending the Copyright Act to provide express recognition of the attribution right. This time, however, I propose to reconsider the foundation for the attribution right; I draw on literary and historical sources to supplement legal arguments concerning the meaning of the author's name. I will suggest that, contrary to the usual characterization of this right …

Design Of A Gait Acquisition And Analysis System For Assessing The Recovery Of Mice Post-Spinal Cord Injury, Casey Harr Jan 2005

Design Of A Gait Acquisition And Analysis System For Assessing The Recovery Of Mice Post-Spinal Cord Injury, Casey Harr

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Current methods of determining spinal cord recovery in mice, post-directed injury, are qualitative measures. This is due to the small size and quickness of mice. This thesis presents a design for a gait acquisition and analysis system able to capture the footfalls of a mouse, extract position and timing data, and report quantitative gait metrics to the operator. These metrics can then be used to evaluate the recovery of the mouse. This work presents the design evolution of the system, from initial sensor design concepts through prototyping and testing to the final implementation. The system utilizes a machine vision camera, …

Bone Engineering Of The Ulna Of Rabbit, Amanda Peter Hart Jan 2005

Bone Engineering Of The Ulna Of Rabbit, Amanda Peter Hart

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Repair of bone defects is a major challenge in orthopaedic surgery. Current bone graft treatments, including autografts, allografts and xenografts, have many limitations making it necessary to develop a biomaterial to be a bone graft substitute. One such biomaterial is bioactive resorbable silica-calcium phosphate nanocomposite (SCPC). SCPC was processed using a 3D rapid prototyping technique and sintered at different temperatures to create porous scaffolds. SEM analyses and mercury intrusion porosimetry showed SCPC to be highly porous with micro- and nanopores. BET analysis indicated that SCPC had high surface area. Mechanical testing demonstrated that SCPC had a compressive strength similar to …
