An Investigation Of High School Geometry Students Proving And Logical Thinking Abilities And The Impact Of Dynamic Geometry Software On Student Performance, Lalitha Subramanian Jan 2005

An Investigation Of High School Geometry Students Proving And Logical Thinking Abilities And The Impact Of Dynamic Geometry Software On Student Performance, Lalitha Subramanian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) the role of a yearlong geometry course on high school geometry students' logical thinking and proof construction abilities, (b) the linkage between students' logical thinking and proof construction abilities, and (c) the impact of dynamic geometry software on students' performance. In addition, this study also ventured to determine if the type of geometry course had any impact on students' logical thinking and proof construction achievement. The sample for the study consisted of 1,325 high school geometry students enrolled in regular, honors, and mastery courses in four high schools from the school …

Time Estimation And Hand Preference, Maria Rodriguez Jan 2005

Time Estimation And Hand Preference, Maria Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work examines the effect of participants' gender and handedness on the perception of short intervals of time. The time estimation task consisted of an empty production procedure with forty trials at each of four intervals of one, three, seven, and twenty seconds. The four target intervals represent a natural logarithmic progression and a series that bracket important temporal thresholds. The order of presentation of those intervals was randomized across participants but yoked across the sexes in each of the respective dominant hand groups. The two between-subject factors, with two levels each, were sex and handedness. Participants produced forty estimates …

Prairie Dog Empire: A Saga Of The Shortgrass Prairie, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 2005

Prairie Dog Empire: A Saga Of The Shortgrass Prairie, Paul A. Johnsgard

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

For hundreds of years black-tailed prairie dogs inhabited the Great Plains by the millions, improving the grazing for bison and pronghorn antelope, digging escape holes and homes for burrowing owls and rodents, and serving as prey for badgers, coyotes, hawks, and bobcats. This book by the renowned naturalist and writer Paul A. Johnsgard tells the complex biological and environmental story of the western Great Plains under the prairie dog’s reign—and then under a brief but devastating century of human dominion. An indispensable and highly readable introduction to the ecosystem of the shortgrass prairie, Prairie Dog Empire describes in clear and …

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2005

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Inspired by passionate contemporary debates about music copyright, this Article investigates how, when, and why music first came within copyright's domain. Ironically, although music publishers and recording companies are among the most aggressive advocates for strong copyright in music today, music publishers in eighteenth-century England resisted extending copyright to music. This Article sheds light on a series of early legal disputes concerning printed music that yield important insights into original understandings of copyright law and music's role in society. By focusing attention on this understudied episode, this Article demonstrates that the concept of copyright was originally far more circumscribed than …

The Use And Influence Of Technology In Mathematics Education, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, Wei-Chi Yang

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The use of various types of technologies in the classroom and examinations is growing rapidly and is strongly influencing teaching and learning practices. In this paper, we will look at particular situations on how various technologies such as numerically capable calculators, graphics calculators, and technological tools that are CAS enabled or have CAS with Dynamic Geometry, impact students' learning. We also discuss briefly the educational opportunities that are made available by the emergence of graphics calculators with capabilities of handling electronic learning activities, such as Casio’s Class Pad (see [1]) and Casio’s 9860 graphics calculator.

Pre-Computation Approach To Nonlinear Simulations Of Deformable Objects, Jernej Barbic Jan 2005

Pre-Computation Approach To Nonlinear Simulations Of Deformable Objects, Jernej Barbic

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

My research area involves building real-time interactive simulations of solid deformable objects. For example, liver tissue should defo1m realistically during a vi1tual surgery simulation. A virtual assembly simulation can catch airplane construction design flaws early on during the manufacturing process. Deformable objects are also useful in computer games, for example to model the motion of trees in the wind. Researchers in computational physics, mechanics, and applied mathematics have been developing algorithms for simulations of deformable objects for the past 40 years. However, the partial differential equations of solid continuum mechanics that govern deformations of physical objects are very involved and …

Global Gene Expression Profiling Of Cells Overexpressing Smc3., Giancarlo Ghiselli, Chang-Gong Liu Jan 2005

Global Gene Expression Profiling Of Cells Overexpressing Smc3., Giancarlo Ghiselli, Chang-Gong Liu

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The Structural Maintenance of Chromosome 3 protein (SMC3) plays an essential role during the sister chromatid separation, is involved in DNA repair and recombination and participates in microtubule-mediated intracellular transport. SMC3 is frequently elevated in human colon carcinoma and overexpression of the protein transforms murine NIH3T3 fibroblasts. In order to gain insight into the mechanism of SMC3-mediated tumorigenesis a gene expression profiling was performed on human 293 cells line stably overexpressing SMC3. RESULTS: Biotinylated complementary RNA (cRNA) was used for hybridization of a cDNAmicroarray chip harboring 18,861 65-mer oligos derived from the published dEST sequences. After filtering, the hybridization …

Podesta Family: Kathleen Salmon (Youth), Jessica D'Anza

Italian American Stories

Kathleen Salmon is that rare young American who thoroughly enjoys being rooted in family life. Now, 20 years old, she loves her Italian American family, its customs, teachings and celebrations. As an only child, Kathleen Salmon was the center of her parents attention. Raised on a farm in Linden, she was part of a loving, extended family. She came to value rural life—the natural surroundings and the integration of work and home. She has never rebelled against her background, but instead prided herself on the strengths and values that have framed her world…

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid Jan 2005

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid

Theses and Dissertations

My installations are propositions for an imaginary world that relies on its own internal logic, a world of believability without recognition. While the work references landscape it also emphasizes its contrivance, as it is automatically estranged in an "unnatural" gallery setting. I subvert or de-familiarize the materials and processes that I use in the service of creating a fictitious environment. My places are impossible places. They are irregular, illogical, and unstable. Our imagination can be one of most dangerous things to psychological stability as it is an inventory of all things possible, no matter how irrational or improbable. The irrational …

Global Discontents, Priyadarshini A. Khatri Jan 2005

Global Discontents, Priyadarshini A. Khatri

Theses and Dissertations

My creative project explores toys as means to express economic issues of globalization. By exploiting the educational and imaginative aspects of toys for adults and children, I intend to reflect on the impact and pressures of globalization on employment, technology and environment. In creating these toys I hope to make a visual statement concerning critical issues of human survival, sustainability and the divisive side of globalization.
