Where Do White People Come From? A Foucaultian Critique Of Whiteness Studies, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2005

Where Do White People Come From? A Foucaultian Critique Of Whiteness Studies, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

Over the past 15 years we have seen the rise of a field of inquiry known as Whiteness Studies. Two of its major tenets are (1) that white identity is socially constructed and functions as a racial norm and (2) that those who occupy the position of white subjectivity exercise ‘white privilege’, which is oppressive to non-whites. However, despite their ubiquitous use of the term ‘norm’, Whiteness Studies theorists rarely give any detailed account of how whiteness serves to normalize. A case is made here that we can only understand how whiteness normalizes if we place the development of white …

Estimating Load-Sharing Properties In A Dynamic Reliability System, Paul H. Kvam, Edsel A. Peña Jan 2005

Estimating Load-Sharing Properties In A Dynamic Reliability System, Paul H. Kvam, Edsel A. Peña

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

An estimator for the load-share parameters in an equal load-share model is derived based on observing k-component parallel systems of identical components that have a continuous distribution function F (˙) and failure rate r (˙). In an equal load-share model, after the first of k components fails, failure rates for the remaining components change from r (t) to γ1r (t), then to γ2r (t) after the next failure, and so on. On the basis of observations on n independent and identical systems, a semiparametric estimator of the component baseline …

Joseph Smith: Prophecy, Process, And Plentitude, Terryl Givens Jan 2005

Joseph Smith: Prophecy, Process, And Plentitude, Terryl Givens

English Faculty Publications

Joseph Smith was an explorer, a discoverer, and a revealer of past worlds. He described an ancient America replete with elaborate detail and daring specificity, rooted and grounded in what he claimed were concrete, palpable artifacts. He recuperated texts of Adam, Abraham, Enoch, and Moses to resurrect and reconstitute a series of past patriarchal ages, not as mere shadows and types of things to come, but as dispensations of gospel fullness equaling, and in some cases surpassing, present plenitude. And he revealed an infinitely receding premortal past—not of the largely mythic Platonic variety and not a mere Wordsworthian, sentimental intimation—but …

Mr. Atod’S Wild Ride: What Do Alcohol, Tobacco, And Other Drugs Have In Common?, David T. Courtwright Jan 2005

Mr. Atod’S Wild Ride: What Do Alcohol, Tobacco, And Other Drugs Have In Common?, David T. Courtwright

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

All researchers agree that individuals can become intoxicated by and dependent on alcohol, tobacco, and other psychoactive drugs. But they have disagreed over whether, and to what extent, drug pathologies comprise a unitary medical problem. Most critically, does addiction have a biological common denominator? Consensus on this question has shifted back and forth. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, physicians often studied and treated various drug addictions together, working under the “inebriety” paradigm. By the mid-twentieth century the inebriety paradigm had collapsed. Tobacco and alcohol had split off, both in the medical research community and in western popular …

The Holy Places: A Russian Travel Perspective, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2005

The Holy Places: A Russian Travel Perspective, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

The renowned sacred sites ofJerusalem attracted the curiosity and devotion of countless Russian travelers over the centuries, and many of these pilgrims recorded their impressions and observations of the holy places. 1 This article presents selected passages from the virtually neglected travel account penned by Russian writer and diplomat Dmitrii V. Dashkov (1784-1839), who visited Palestine in 1820. His work provides eyewitness information and telling detail on a variety of topics, including the exact location of the most important shrines in Christianity and the renewed discord among Christian denominations over worship and custodial rights at these consecrated, and contested, sites.

Model Based Experimental Investigation On Powered Gait Orthosis (Pgo), Huojin Cheng Jan 2005

Model Based Experimental Investigation On Powered Gait Orthosis (Pgo), Huojin Cheng

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Research on rehabilitation showed that appropriate and repetitive mechanical movements can help spinal cord injured individuals to restore their functional standing and walking. The objective of this paper was to achieve appropriate and repetitive joint movements and approximately normal gait through the PGO by replicating normal walking, and to minimize the energy consumption for both patients and the device. A model based experimental investigative approach is presented in this dissertation.

First, a human model was created in Ideas and human walking was simulated in Adams. The main feature of this model was the foot ground contact model, which had distributed …

Harry Potter And The Law, Timothy S. Hall, Jeffrey E. Thomas, Danaya C. Wright, James Charles Smith, Aaron Schwabach, Joel Fishman, Daniel Austin Green, Andrew P. Morriss, Benjamin H. Barton

Faculty Works

The magnitude of the Harry Potter phenomenon alone would make it worthy of consideration; the fact that it is children's literature, and thus may play a significant part in forming a future generation's attitudes toward law and legal institutions, makes it even more so. The various contributions to this article explore various aspects of law and culture as presented in or viewed through the Harry Potter stories. The contributions of James Charles Smith and Danaya Wright address the depiction of families in the narratives and the limited role and development of family law. Benjamin H. Barton's contribution considers the failings …

Everyday Seeds To Grow On: Writings For Children, Cindy A. Miller Jan 2005

Everyday Seeds To Grow On: Writings For Children, Cindy A. Miller

Theses

The poems that comprise the following project were created for the pleasure and enjoyment of both children and adults. Th.is master's project for the MFA in writing is the result of a lifelong interest in children's literature. The majority of the work consists of my own stories in poetic form. The reader will notice many of the prominent elements found in poetry, such as visual imagery, rhythmic patterns, and rhyme. These characteristics are most obvious in "The Garden of Gigglings," writings created with picture book formats in mind. This section contains mostly funny stories whose humor can be emphasized through …

(E)Racing Youth: The Racialized Construction Of California's Proposition 21 And The Development Of Alternate Contestations, Nicholas Espiritu Jan 2005

(E)Racing Youth: The Racialized Construction Of California's Proposition 21 And The Development Of Alternate Contestations, Nicholas Espiritu

Cleveland State Law Review

Illustrating the way in which conceptions of race and crime shape and are shaped by law is California's Proposition 21. Enacted in 2000, Proposition 21, also known as the Gang Violence and Juvenile Crime Prevention Act," was the product of California's direct democratic process through which voters are able to change the California Constitution through a simple majority vote. Part II address the ideological foundations of direct democracy and examines critically its ability to serve a democratic function. I examine the founders' rationale behind the decision not to employ a representative form of government, and look at direct democracy in …

Of Desi, J. Lo And Color Matters: Law, Critical Race Theory The Architecture Of Race, Imani Perry Jan 2005

Of Desi, J. Lo And Color Matters: Law, Critical Race Theory The Architecture Of Race, Imani Perry

Cleveland State Law Review

In this article I want to posit two ways in which a critique of the black white binary leads us to understandings of race and racism that are useful for the struggles of all peoples of color. The first is, the critique should lead us to advocate for an understanding of race as an architecture rather than categorical. The second argument is that when we focus upon race as an architecture it leads us away from a linear notion of racial hierarchy with white at the top and black at the bottom, and towards a sense that the distribution of …
