Differences Between Targeted And Measured Body Weight Support With The Usage Of A Body Weight Support System, Robin Cropper Jan 2005

Differences Between Targeted And Measured Body Weight Support With The Usage Of A Body Weight Support System, Robin Cropper

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of the study was to determine if the body weight support system (BWSS) maintains the targeted percentage of the subject's body weight support (BWS) during walking and to explore the relationship between unloading and ground reaction force. Sixteen healthy college students (mean age: 22 years old) were recruited as subjects. Tests were conducted using an instrumented treadmill with a BWSS. The BWSS harness was secured around the lower abdomen and pelvis of each subject for effective body weight support. Vertical ground reaction force was measured by force platforms embedded in the treadmill. A force sensor was attached to …

The Matas "Barn", Robin Plantation (16sl66), St. Landry Parish, Louisiana-History And Archaeology Of A Nineteenth Century Milk House, Sara Anne Hahn

LSU Master's Theses

The Robin Plantation Site (16SL66) is located on the left descending bank of Bayou Teche, near the town of Arnaudville, Louisiana. The site—owned by the Michael and Myra Matas—consists of 14.14 acres of land, a main house, the “barn,” a circa 1945 barn, an overseer’s house and two above-ground cistern bases. The primary goal of this thesis was to determine the age and function of Room 1 of the “barn.” The “barn” in its present form consists of two rooms separated by a breezeway: Room 1 of pièce-sur-pièce construction and Room 2 of post-on-sill construction. As noted, the focus of …

Evaluation Of A Novel Method Of Predicting Estrogen Activity Of A Group Of Structurally Diverse Compounds, Daniel Consoer Jan 2005

Evaluation Of A Novel Method Of Predicting Estrogen Activity Of A Group Of Structurally Diverse Compounds, Daniel Consoer

LSU Master's Theses

The number of environmental chemicals found to have some level of endocrine activity has led to concern about the possible effects these compounds could have on human health and the health of other species, populations, and possibly whole ecosystems. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has been charged with testing a large number of these compounds, called endocrine-disrupting chemicals or hormonally active agents for hormonal activity. Limited testing resources have led to a call for alternate methods of screening, possibly for use in prioritizing this list to assist in efficient allocation of resources for further testing. This study describes a …

Designation Of The Southwest National Wildlife Refuge Complex As Wetlands Of International Importance Under Ramsar, Convention On Wetlands Of International Importance, Mitchell Ward Coffman

LSU Master's Theses

The historical loss and continued threat of loss of Louisiana wetlands is a major environmental concern for the United States and the world. In 1971, the Ramsar Convention, an international environmental treaty was ratified to specifically address conservation planning and land use management issues involving wetlands of the world. Ramsar provides an international designation award called, the Wetlands of International Importance List, which formally acknowledges globally important wetland landscapes. Ramsar outlines specific criterion nominated wetland sites must possess for consideration of this listing.

The Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex is an excellent candidate for nomination to the Ramsar Convention …

Neural Stem Cells As A Delivery Vector For Chemokine Expression In The Central Nervous System, Mark Winston Stalder Jan 2005

Neural Stem Cells As A Delivery Vector For Chemokine Expression In The Central Nervous System, Mark Winston Stalder

LSU Master's Theses

Increased expression of cytokines and chemokines in the central nervous system (CNS) is closely associated with the development of retroviral-induced neurological diseases such as HIV-associated dementia, as well as other neuropathologies such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. The specific functions of many of these pro-inflammatory factors have yet to be elucidated in the disease process, and it is unclear whether the nature of their effects is protective, pathogenic, or both. Additionally, current models of chemokine function have inherent limitations, with direct injection resulting in a brief response that doesn’t accurately represent the effects of chronic production, and transgenic mice …

Shall We Overcome? Transcending Race, Class, And Ideology Through Interest Convergence, Sheryll Cashin Jan 2005

Shall We Overcome? Transcending Race, Class, And Ideology Through Interest Convergence, Sheryll Cashin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In the past year we have celebrated a number of civil rights milestones: the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education; the fortieth anniversaries of the March on Washington and of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Collectively our nation now venerates our most progressive, socially transforming legal edicts, even as we accept, or ignore, persistent racial inequality. Much has been written about the limits and modern meaning of Brown. Elsewhere I have argued that we have failed to live up to the integrationist vision that animated Brown and the civil rights movement, primarily because our neighborhoods remain …

Cured Meat And Idaho Potatoes: A Comparative Analysis Of European And American Protection And Enforcement Of Geographic Indications Of Foodstuffs, Lilian V. Faulhaber Jan 2005

Cured Meat And Idaho Potatoes: A Comparative Analysis Of European And American Protection And Enforcement Of Geographic Indications Of Foodstuffs, Lilian V. Faulhaber

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Geographic indications, as defined by the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights ("TRIPS Agreement"), are "indications which identify a good as originating in the territory of a member or region or locality in that territory where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin."

While the general concept of protecting geographically-significant products from competition has existed for centuries, the protection provided to geographic indications varies significantly, both between countries and according to the product being protected.

Since the protection of foodstuffs in both Europe and America is a less …

Marine Growth And Morphometrics For Three Populations Of Atlantic Salmon From Eastern Maine, Usa, Timothy F. Sheehan, John F. Kocik, Steven X. Cadrin, Christopher M. Legault, Ernest Atkinson, David A. Bengtson Jan 2005

Marine Growth And Morphometrics For Three Populations Of Atlantic Salmon From Eastern Maine, Usa, Timothy F. Sheehan, John F. Kocik, Steven X. Cadrin, Christopher M. Legault, Ernest Atkinson, David A. Bengtson

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Significant differences in growth and prespawning body morphology were detected among three stocks of Atlantic salmon reared in a common marine environment. Smolts originating from river-specific broodstock of the Machias, East Machias, and Dennys populations were reared at two marine net-pen facilities for 25 months. Significant differences in stock-specific growth were observed among two stocks at both sites, suggesting a genetic basis for the observed phenotypic variation. There was a significant stock effect to the total measured phenotypic variation based on collected truss network analyses. Linear discriminant function analysis of a truss network of morphometric distances allowed for 73% accuracy …

Enhancing Driving Safety Through Proper Message Design On Variable Message Signs, Chun-Ming Yang

Open Access Dissertations

This research presents a study that assessed drivers' responses to and comprehension of variable message sign (VMS) messages displayed in different ways with the intent to help enhance message display on VMSs. Firstly, a review of literatures and current practices regarding the design and display of VMS messages is presented. Secondly, the study incorporates three approaches in the assessment. Questionnaire surveys were designed to investigate the preferences of highway drivers. Lab experiments were developed to assess drivers' responses to a variety of VMS messages in a simulated driving environment. Field studies were set up to study drivers' response to VMS …

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Reproductive Health Services In Bolivia, Fernando Gonzales Salguero, Antonieta Martin, Rosario Perez Mendoza, Ricardo Vernon

Reproductive Health

The Bolivian Ministry of Health and Sports and the Integral Health Project, with the technical assistance of the Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program (FRONTIERS), tested several strategies to make health services in Bolivia more culturally appropriate for the country’s indigenous peoples. The goal of the project was to increase women’s access to, use of, and satisfaction with health services in general, and reproductive health services in particular, through: a) enhanced understanding and acceptance of the “other” culture; b) improving communication skills; c) facilitating and promoting use of the Quechua language in clinics; d) systematically screening clients’ health service …

The Vanishing Public Domain: Antibiotic Resistance, Pharmaceutical Innovation And Intellectual Property Law, Kevin Outterson Jan 2005

The Vanishing Public Domain: Antibiotic Resistance, Pharmaceutical Innovation And Intellectual Property Law, Kevin Outterson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Penicillin and other antibiotics were the original wonder drugs and laid the foundation of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Human health significantly improved with the introduction of antibiotics. By 1967, the U.S. Surgeon General declared victory over infectious diseases in the United States. But pride goes before a fall. The evolutionary pressure of antibiotic use selects for resistant strains. Effective drugs should be used. But when they are used, no matter how carefully, evolutionary pressure for resistance is created. The problem is not limited to antibiotics. Variants of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) develop resistance to anti-retroviral drugs. Antifungal agents face …

Enterococcus Avium. An Unusual Cause Of Cerebral Abscess, Abimbola O. Osoba, Hussam Kutub, Ahmed Waliuddin, M’Omen Sharab

Neurosciences

Enterococci are responsible for an increasing number of human infections. They are normally part of the flora of the human gastrointestinal tract, buccal cavity, perineal skin, vagina, urethra and gallbladder, but may occur as pathogens in several sites causing urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, fatal bacteremia, meningitis and endocarditis. Enterococcus avium is a rare cause of infection in humans. Here, we report a 19-year-old Saudi girl diagnosed as a case of astrocytoma grade II arising from the right thalamus. She underwent treatment with radiotherapy followed by 5 chemotherapy sessions. She subsequently developed a cerebral abscess, and we performed mini craniotomy …

Feeding Ecology Of Juvenile Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Interruptus, On The Pacific Coast Of Baja California Sur, Mexico, Verónica Castañeda‐Fernández‐De‐Lara, Elisa Serviere‐Zaragoza, Sergio Hernández‐Vázquez, Mark J. Butler Iv

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many aspects of the early life history of the red lobster Panulirus interruptus are little known, including the relationship between habitat structure, food resource availability, and nutrition of juveniles. We investigated the spatial and temporal differences in food intake, diet composition, and nutritional condition of juveniles at two sites along the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) with contrasting oceanographic and biological conditions. One site (Arvin) is located inside a protected bay, Bahia Tortugas, where the waters are cooler and temperate seagrasses and macroalgae are the dominant benthic flora. The second site (Queen) in Bahia Sebastian Vizcaino was …

The Possibility Of Secular Human Rights: Alan Gewirth And The Principle Of Generic Consistency, Ari Kohen Jan 2005

The Possibility Of Secular Human Rights: Alan Gewirth And The Principle Of Generic Consistency, Ari Kohen

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

This article explores Alan Gewirth’s argument for a secular foundation for the idea of human rights as a possible response to Michael J. Perry’s claim “that the idea of human rights is … ineliminably religious.” I examine Gewirth’s reasoning for constructing a theory, namely that existing theories are fundamentally flawed and leave the idea of human rights without a logically consistent foundation, before considering in detail his claims for the Principle of Generic Consistency (PGC). Having looked at his critique of numerous other theories, as well as at his own argument about human action grounding basic rights to freedom and …

A Guide To The Management & Operation Of A Chinese Restaurant In The United States, Wen-Chiung Huang Jan 2005

A Guide To The Management & Operation Of A Chinese Restaurant In The United States, Wen-Chiung Huang

Theses

Before writing this thesis, the reason I choose for the issue of management and operation of Chinese restaurant is not because so much mass communication was related. It is the idea of the restaurant business how it to be created by using media or people's words of mouth. It is difficult to start a new business in the foreign country. Restaurant business does the same. In the early a late age of immigration, people realized only work hard can made a better life for themselves and their next generation. They started have their own business, created job opportunity even contributed …

Evidence Of Pre-Clovis Sites In The Eastern United States, Albert C. Goodyear Jan 2005

Evidence Of Pre-Clovis Sites In The Eastern United States, Albert C. Goodyear

Faculty & Staff Publications

Over the past 25 years, a number of archaeological sites in eastern North America have manifested evidence of human occupations dating earlier than 11,500 RCYBP. These sites include Meadowcroft Rockshelter, Penn.; Cactus Hill, Va.; Saltville-2, Va.; and Topper, S.C. Except for Topper, pre-Clovis (earlier than 11,500 RCYBP) remains were encountered incidental to conducting normal research. Topper was intentionally tested for the possibility of pre-Clovis remains. This paper is a brief review of the geological contexts, dating, and artifactual evidence of these sites. Collectively, they indicate a late-glacial time range of approximately 12,000 to 16,000 RCYBP. Technologically, Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Cactus …
