Adventures Of A Former Girlfriend: A Novel, Colleen Helen Fava Jan 2005

Adventures Of A Former Girlfriend: A Novel, Colleen Helen Fava

LSU Master's Theses

This is a novel about a young woman trying to redefine herself after years of defining herself through her relationships with other people, most specifically her boyfriends, but also her family. The heroine faces many challenges: the end of a long-term relationship, the illness of her niece, complications with her best friends, and a revelation about her parent's relationship. These ordinary obstacles of everyday living will propel the main character into a confrontation with her perception of herself and the world around her.

Purification Of Lysozyme From Shell Liquor Of Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) And Its Use In Antimicrobial Films To Preserve Smoked Fish, Shreya Datta

LSU Master's Theses

The objective of our study was to purify lysozyme from the fluid filling cavity (shell liquor) of the eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and determine the antimicrobial activity of purified lysozyme against foodborne pathogens in smoked salmon samples. Oyster shell liquor was collected over four seasons namely summer 2003, fall 2003, winter 2004, and spring 2004. Spring season showed the highest lysozyme concentration. Lysozyme was purified from 300 liters of oyster shell liquor by a two-step ion exchange chromatography using SP- and CM- Sepharose Fast Flow columns, respectively. Two hundred five mg of pure lysozyme was obtained which represented a recovery …

Digging Through Discarded Identity: Archaeological Investigations Around The Kitchen And The Overseer's House At Whitney Plantation, Louisiana, Erika Sabine Roberts Jan 2005

Digging Through Discarded Identity: Archaeological Investigations Around The Kitchen And The Overseer's House At Whitney Plantation, Louisiana, Erika Sabine Roberts

LSU Master's Theses

During the mid-nineteenth century, the Haydel family was prominent sugar planters in southern Louisiana. Their plantation, Whitney Plantation (16SJB11), lies on the highway 18 on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Wallace, Louisiana. During the summer of 2002 archaeological investigations were conducted around the kitchen and the overseer’s house, in order to collect a sample of materials associated with these occupants. I hoped that the artifacts could yield information on how the planter and overseer family represented themselves materially. Although what I excavated was the discarded remnants of the Haydel family’s life, these remnants offer an understanding of …

Environmental Factors Influencing Incubation Constancy And Recess Frequency In Gadwall (Anas Strepera) In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North Dakota, Nicole F. Lorenz

LSU Master's Theses

I examined nest attendance patterns for 132 Gadwall (Anas strepera) females breeding in the prairie pothole region located in Towner County, North Dakota from May to July 2000 - 2001. Overall, Gadwall had a daily incubation constancy of 76.5 ± 10.8%, and daily recess frequency of 2.2 ± 1.1 with each recess lasting 179.8 ± 133.8 minutes. Unlike other waterfowl species, Gadwall increased incubation constancy and decreased recess frequency as daily high temperature increased and showed no change in constancy with precipitation. Gadwall incubation constancy did not fit the body-size hypothesis, as Gadwall have a lower incubation constancy compared to …

Antimicrobial Effect Of Cetylpyridinium Chloride Against Listeria Monocytogenes Growth On The Surface Of Raw And Cooked Shrimp, Tracie Michelle Dupard Jan 2005

Antimicrobial Effect Of Cetylpyridinium Chloride Against Listeria Monocytogenes Growth On The Surface Of Raw And Cooked Shrimp, Tracie Michelle Dupard

LSU Master's Theses

Listeria monocytogenes has emerged as a major foodborne pathogen for the seafood industry due to its psychrotrophic nature and its ubiquitous presence. It has been isolated from soil, sewage, dead vegetative matter, aquatic environments, fecal material, fish, crustaceans, and domesticated animals. As a result, L. monocytogenes has been responsible for several shrimp recalls and has been epidemiologically linked to human listeriosis. Fresh seafood products are highly perishable and their shelf-life is limited by microbiological spoilage. Therefore, when pathogenic microorganisms are involved, it poses a health threat to the general public. The situation is further complicated because seafood processing plants are …

Basal diets consisted of (DM basis) 33% corn silage, 20% bermudagrass hay, 27% ground corn, and 2% minerals and vitamins. Supplemental protein was provided as (DM % of total diet) 18% soybean meal (SOY), 17% soybean meal and 1% fish meal (FM), or 12% soybean meal and 6% …

Fuzzifying [Sic] Markov Decision Process, Ahmed Syed Irshad Jan 2005

Fuzzifying [Sic] Markov Decision Process, Ahmed Syed Irshad

LSU Master's Theses

Markov decision processes have become an indispensable tool in applications as diverse as equipment maintenance, manufacturing systems, inventory control, queuing networks and investment analysis. Typically we have a controlled Markov chain on a suitable state space in which transitional probabilities depend on the policy (or decision maker) which comes from a set of possible actions. The main problem of interest would be to find an optimal policy that minimizes the associated cost. Linear Programming has been widely used to find the optimal Markov decision policy. It requires solutions of large systems of simultaneous linear equations. By the fact that the …

Environmental Benefits Realized From Eradication Of The Non-Indigenous Insect Anthonomus Grandis Boheman, The Cotton Boll Weevil, Marc Stephen Bordelon Jan 2005

Environmental Benefits Realized From Eradication Of The Non-Indigenous Insect Anthonomus Grandis Boheman, The Cotton Boll Weevil, Marc Stephen Bordelon

LSU Master's Theses

At least one third of the insecticide used in agriculture has been used to control the boll weevil in cotton. Historically, these insecticides have been toxic to humans and harsh on the environment. In addition, the intensive use of chemical insecticides to control the boll weevil results in the disruption of naturally occurring biological control factors that regulate other insect pest populations causing a chain reaction of secondary pest populations that require treatment followed by resurgence and repeat treatment. This situation has resulted in the development of resistance to insecticides, high control costs and unacceptable levels of chemical insecticide contamination …

Influences On The Establishment Of County Wildfire Risk Mitigation: The Case Of California's Fire Safe Councils, Timothy Richard Soileau Jan 2005

Influences On The Establishment Of County Wildfire Risk Mitigation: The Case Of California's Fire Safe Councils, Timothy Richard Soileau

LSU Master's Theses

In response to increased annual wildfire destruction and insufficient wildfire mitigation approaches from the federal government, the state of California adopted Public Resources Code Sections 4290 and 4291 in the year 1991. These laws force the removal of fire-causing agents from public and private areas, and establish what is known as defensible space. Defensible space is defined in Section 4291 as the area within the perimeter of a parcel, development, neighborhood, or community where basic wildland fire protection practices and measures are implemented, providing the key point of defense from an approaching wildfire or escaping structure fire. One method to …

An Analysis Of The Variables That Influence A Country's Decision To Ratify The Stockholm Convention On Persistent Organic Pollutants, Tokesha Marie Collins

LSU Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to identify key factors that influence a country to ratify the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Treaty. The POPs treaty seeks to eliminate or reduce the emissions of 12 POPs. I will examine the links between the countries that have ratified the POPs treaty in an effort to identify variables that may have influenced a country's decision to ratify the treaty. For each of the 165 nations in my dataset, I will examine economic, social, geographic, health, and political indicators and history of malaria and determine if a relationship exists between these variables and treaty …

Christians Against Globalization In The Philippines, Kathy Nadeau Jan 2005

Christians Against Globalization In The Philippines, Kathy Nadeau

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on the Basic Christian Communities in the Philippines that work to counter human and environmental rights violations resulting from macro-economic development processes. While not every activist-led and mass-based people's movement includes critical environmental issues on their agendas for social change, this paper directs its attention to the progressive Basic Christian Community movement that incorporates an environmentally concerned and team-oriented approach to problem solving at the local level. This movement is part of an international bottom-up effort to counteract some of the negative effects of global capitalism (e.g., the fragmentation of close-knit communities that were once based on …

Visualization Based On Interactive Clipping: Application To Confocal Data, Gaurav Khanduja Jan 2005

Visualization Based On Interactive Clipping: Application To Confocal Data, Gaurav Khanduja

LSU Master's Theses

We have explored how clipping can be exploited in an interactive manner to visualize massive three-dimensional datasets. In essence, the proposed interactive clipping approach involves the dynamic adjustment of the clipping plane to expose any cross-section of the volume data and subsequent adjustment of the clipped surface to the best view position using a combination of rotation and translation. The thesis describes the design, implementation and application of our interactive-clipping-based visualization system. The implementation is done with OpenGL and C++, thus resulting in a highly portable and flexible system. For illustration, two types of scientific datasets, confocal data of a …

Associations Of Avian And Herpetofauna Communities With Forest Management At Multiple Spatial Scales, Holly Grace Legrand

LSU Master's Theses

Decline of amphibians, reptiles, and numerous Neotropical migrant birds has been attributed to habitat destruction and alteration, which warrants examination of these groups in managed forests and their association with habitat characteristics at multiple spatial scales. We surveyed avifauna and herpetofauna communities in 3 managed forests in Louisiana during 2003-2004. Study areas included Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA), a bottomland hardwood forest under uneven-aged management, Ben’s Creek WMA, an even-aged, short-rotation loblolly pine plantation, and Sandy Hollow WMA, a longleaf pine-savannah maintained with prescribed fire. Field techniques included surveys consisting of avian point counts, drift fence arrays (PFFT), cover boards, …

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of this thesis was to evaluate temperature effects on cell proliferation of eastern oyster somatic tissues for the development of an oyster cell line. Understanding the in vivo cell proliferation of an organism is essential for the development of cell culture. Cell proliferation can be measured by identifying nuclear cellular proteins involved in growth regulation and cellular transformation. The primary objectives of this study were to: 1) develop an assay to evaluate cell proliferation, 2) develop an assay to analyze nuclear RNA content, and 3) evaluate temperature effects on cell proliferation in somatic tissues. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen …

Autonomic Nervous System Modulation Of The Heart Following A High Carbohydrate Liquid Meal, Calynn Davis Bunol Jan 2005

Autonomic Nervous System Modulation Of The Heart Following A High Carbohydrate Liquid Meal, Calynn Davis Bunol

LSU Master's Theses

The involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathology of obesity has long been a debate among researchers. Various methods of capturing the resting sympathetic activity as well as the response of the sympathetic activity elicited by the introduction of a meal or a bout of exercise in both lean and obese individuals have been investigated. This study examined the autonomic modulation of the heart following a high carbohydrate liquid meal in various body types. Twenty-five females with body mass indexes [weight (kg)/height2(m)] ranging from 19.3-39.5 were grouped according to relative basal energy expenditure adjusted for lean …

Fashion Involvement Of Affluent Female Consumers, Robin Danielle Mcfatter Jan 2005

Fashion Involvement Of Affluent Female Consumers, Robin Danielle Mcfatter

LSU Master's Theses

Fashion involvement is a consumer’s perceived importance of fashion clothing (O’Cass, 2001). It is important to investigate fashion involvement to understand consumer purchase behavior and to develop improved marketing strategies. Although researchers agree that consumers consider apparel purchases to be important, there has been little research done regarding fashion involvement (O’Cass, 2000) of affluent female consumers. The purpose of this study was to measure the fashion involvement of selected affluent female consumers from eight metropolitan areas in the United States and to identify relationships between fashion involvement and other selected variables. After controlling for socioeconomic demographic characteristics, the following variables …

In The Garden, Christopher B. Hutson Jan 2005

In The Garden, Christopher B. Hutson

LSU Master's Theses

This body of artwork is centered on the idea of a garden as a space in between the two systems of human and natural order. The ambiguities of this in-between space tie together ideas pertinent to both worlds, using the ancient “doctrine of signatures” as an intermediary. These ideas are explored in fourteen artworks, including large-scale and smaller drawings, lithographs, and etchings.

Places Common: Encountering Nature In Time And Place, Stacey Jo Harms Jan 2005

Places Common: Encountering Nature In Time And Place, Stacey Jo Harms

LSU Master's Theses

There are some moments in time that imprint in a lasting but unremarkable way. These memories are not always profound but yet are sometimes the most enduring. They come forward in our thoughts again and again with no particular rhyme or reason and with the randomness of a field of wildflowers. My memories often come back to me disguised as the flowers themselves.

Spatial Heterogeneity In Forested Landscapes: An Examination Of Forest Fragmentation And Suburban Sprawl In The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, Brady Randall Couvillion Jan 2005

Spatial Heterogeneity In Forested Landscapes: An Examination Of Forest Fragmentation And Suburban Sprawl In The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, Brady Randall Couvillion

LSU Master's Theses

Forest fragmentation refers to the spatial distribution of forests in a landscape. Forest fragmentation drastically alters forest composition, habitat quality, genetic flow and many other ecological processes associated with forested ecosystems. This research examined spatial patterns and rates of forest fragmentation during the 1991-2001 period for a region in southeast Louisiana known as the "Florida Parishes." Following classification of 1991 and 2001 Landsat data into forest and non-forest classes, spatial patterns were examined using Fragstats 3.3 spatial analysis software. Spatial statistics such as patch density, perimeter to area ratios, core area indices, edge density, and various landscape continuity indices were …

Effect Of Estradiol-17b On The Gonadal Developemnt Of Diploid And Triploid Female Eastern Oysters, Roberto Quintana

LSU Master's Theses

Declines in annual oyster landings and problems associated with seasonal reduction of oyster meat yields have increased interest for development of techniques to produce oysters with enhanced growth characteristics. Research interest has been focused on developing improved lines by induction of polyploidy. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the enhancement of gonadal development of triploid oysters, by the use of the hormone estradiol 17-â (E2) to produce viable eggs for the development of tetraploid broodstocks. Previous studies with the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, have shown: (1) the need to use the larger eggs of triploid females to …

Results showed that parents were able to use the procedures during baseline and maintained relatively stable …

The Riace Bronzes: A Comparative Study In Style And Technique, Jennifer Alaine Henrichs Jan 2005

The Riace Bronzes: A Comparative Study In Style And Technique, Jennifer Alaine Henrichs

LSU Master's Theses

Two monumental bronze statues were discovered by a diver in the remains of an ancient shipwreck in the Riace Marina off the coast of Calabria in 1972. After their recovery and extensive conservation in the Archaeological Museum in Florence, the Riace bronzes have now come to reside in the Reggio Calabria Museo Nazionale. Lacking any inscriptions and removed from their original context, the Riace bronzes have been the source of much conjectured debate throughout the art world. This paper examines the Riace bronzes on both technical and stylistic grounds by addressing such matters as the method of construction, the physical …

A Bioeconomic Supply Model For Louisiana Nutria And Impacts On Wetlands Conservation Associated With Economic Incentives, Cheikhna Ould Dedah Jan 2005

A Bioeconomic Supply Model For Louisiana Nutria And Impacts On Wetlands Conservation Associated With Economic Incentives, Cheikhna Ould Dedah

LSU Master's Theses

Nutria (Mayocastor) were first introduced to Louisiana in 1938. With few natural predators and high prolific productivity, they became well established in the surrounding coastal marsh within a few years. Prior to 1980’s, as a result of high demand for nutria products from European countries, harvest pressure was sufficient to keep the population in ‘check’ with their wetlands capacity. By the mid-1980’s, however, prices had fallen sharply, culminating in declining annual harvests and an increasing population. Because of their feeding habits, the increased nutria population has resulted in a substantial amount of wetland degradation. In this thesis, a long-run bioeconomic …

Reproductive Characteristics Of High Body Condition Mares With High Versus Low Leptin Concentrations, Cara A. Waller Jan 2005

Reproductive Characteristics Of High Body Condition Mares With High Versus Low Leptin Concentrations, Cara A. Waller

LSU Master's Theses

Two experiments were performed to discover what, if any, reproductive differences exist in high body condition (BCS) mares with varying concentrations of leptin. Previous research showed that mares with high body condition scores can have a range of leptin levels, from very low (<5 ng/mL) to very high (>10 ng/mL). Earlier results indicated that most mares with high body condition scores maintain estrous cycles or show significant follicular activity during the winter. Among these high BCS mares, about 30% of them exhibit hyperleptinemia and hyperinsulinemia. The first experiment was designed to compare the reproductive characteristics of high BCS mares with high versus low leptin …

Java As A Western Construct: An Examination Of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' "The History Of Java", Natalie A. Mault

LSU Master's Theses

Among nineteenth-century books on Indonesia published in England, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles’ "The History of Java" holds a unique position. While serving as Lieutenant Governor in Indonesia, Raffles went to great length in documenting the island’s history, culture, architecture and contemporary civilization. His observations were published in a two-volume study entitled "The History of Java," whose most outstanding feature is the sixty-six engravings it includes. Ten of these engravings are colored aquatints by William Daniell, illustrating Javanese life and costume. Published in 1817, Raffles’ "History of Java" is considered, to the present day, a highly important work, particularly because of …

Hemodynamic And Ocular Responses To Caloric Stimulation And Age-Related Disparities, Melissa J. Deveer Jan 2005

Hemodynamic And Ocular Responses To Caloric Stimulation And Age-Related Disparities, Melissa J. Deveer

LSU Master's Theses

Age-related declines in vestibular function affect balance and coordination in older adults. Of perhaps equal importance, but less understood, are the potential implications of vestibular degeneration on cardiovascular homeostasis. Recent evidence suggests that the semi-circular canals, a section of the vestibular system, may be involved in the vestibulosympathetic reflex (VSR), but the extent to which the aging of the semi-circular canals interferes with cardiovascular homeostasis is unknown. Activation of the intact VSR results in increases in tonometric blood pressure (TBP) and heart rate (HR) as well as decreases in cardiac output (Q) and pre-ejection period (PEP). The purpose of this …
