Toward Art-Making As Liberatory Pedagogy And Practice: Artists And Students In An Anti-Bullying School Reform Initiative, Sharon Verner Chappell Jan 2005

Toward Art-Making As Liberatory Pedagogy And Practice: Artists And Students In An Anti-Bullying School Reform Initiative, Sharon Verner Chappell

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I sit at my desk for the last thirty minutes before driving to school where I will teach a painting lesson on abstract art. I am an after school visual arts intervention teacher who travels among ten K-6 urban schools in the Bay Area of California. When I am not on campus, I am working at the district office coordinating visiting artist programs and developing integrated arts curriculum. Yet each day, I notice an increasing disconnect between my duties as a teacher and my own arts practice. My painting, collage, and drawing lessons look just like the ones in the …

Feed Conversion Index In Two Populations And Two Lines Of Guinea Pigs For Meat Production, Kathia Jordán Vargas Jan 2005

Feed Conversion Index In Two Populations And Two Lines Of Guinea Pigs For Meat Production, Kathia Jordán Vargas

Theses and Dissertations

The guinea pig (Cavia aperea porcellus) is an alternative to improve human nutrition because its meat is of excellent taste and quality. Thus, it is an important nutritional source. The feed conversion index was determined under the basic (forage) and mixed (forage and concentrate) diets during the growth phase. This was done with both sexes located in the Tamborada and MEJOCUY populations, using the AUQUI, and San Luis lines. This was done in order to quantify how many kilograms of feed an animal must eat to gain one kilogram of live weight. The animals were randomly distributed into individual pools …

Wingless Signaling Pathway Family Relation To Colon Cancer. Have We Come Full Circle?, Khawla S. Al-Kuraya, Kishor G. Bhatia

Saudi Medical Journal

Colorectal cancer CRC is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Advances in molecular techniques have provided deep insight into the molecular pathogenesis, biologic and genetic changes occurring in colon cancer patients. Current theories of malignant transformation postulate that development of colon cancer is related to 2 main pathways; the loss of heterozygosity pathway, which is usually due to a defect in the adenomatous polyposis coli APC gene and microsatellite instability, which is usually due to a defect in mismatch repair MMR genes. This review summarizes the role of the wingless signaling pathway genes including APC and MMR genes in …

The Lost Commandment: The Sacred Rites Of Hospitality, Peter J. Sorensen

BYU Studies

Also when a stranger came into their cities and brought goods which he had purchased with a view to dispose of there, the people of these cities would assemble, men, women and children, young and old, and go to the man and take his goods by force, giving a little to each man until there was an end to all the goods of the owner which he had brought into the land. (Sepher Ha-Yashar 18:16)

The Multiple Roles Of Anticipation In Developmental Robotics, Doug Blank, Joshua M. Lewis, James B. Marshall

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Anticipatory systems have been shown to be useful in discrete, symbolic systems. However, nonsymbolic anticipatory systems are less well understood. In this paper, we explore the use of anticipation within the framework of connectionist networks to bootstrap from an innate behavior; to drive a reinforcement signal; and to provide feedback on the learnability of a task.

Caregivers' Readiness For Change: Predictive Validity In A Child Welfare Sample, Julia H. Littell, Heather Girvin Jan 2005

Caregivers' Readiness For Change: Predictive Validity In A Child Welfare Sample, Julia H. Littell, Heather Girvin

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Objective:

To assess the predictive validity of continuous measures of problem recognition (PR), intentions to change (ITC), and overall readiness for change (RFC) among primary caregivers who received in-home services following substantiated reports of child abuse or neglect.

Method:

A modified version of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment scale was included in interviews with a sample of 353 primary caregivers at 4 weeks, 16 weeks, and 1 year after referral for in-home services. Additional data were obtained from administrative records and caseworker surveys. Hierarchical linear and nonlinear models were used to assess relationships between PR, ITC, RFC and …

The Well-Tempered Savage: Albert Schweitzer, Music, And Imperial Deafness, Pim Higginson Jan 2005

The Well-Tempered Savage: Albert Schweitzer, Music, And Imperial Deafness, Pim Higginson

French and Francophone Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper examines how Bassek ba Kobhio's 1995 film Le Grand Blanc de Lambarene uses music to deconstruct the iconic figure of Albert Schweitzer. At key moments throughout the film, the doctor encounters a young drummer with whom he attempts and fails to communicate musically. The moments have little to do with the otherwise linear narrative. Nevertheless, they structure the film's argument and demonstrate the ways in which an expressive medium becomes an essential ingredient in Western ordering and mastering of the world. Having established this connection, ba Kobhio proposes another model of social identity in which music offers a …

How Much Does Chaos Scare You?: Politics, Religion, And Philosophy In The Fiction Of Philip K. Dick, Aaron Barlow Jan 2005

How Much Does Chaos Scare You?: Politics, Religion, And Philosophy In The Fiction Of Philip K. Dick, Aaron Barlow

Publications and Research

"Certain themes appear with surprising consistency in Dick’s fiction. They crop up in the early short stories, called by some critics, including Kim Stanley Robinson, Dick’s “apprentice” fiction. They appear in the novels of Dick’s most productive period, the 1960s. And they are a part of the last novels, the VALIS trilogy and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer—written when Dick was, according to Eric Rabkin and others, insane. These themes fall into three inter-related categories: metaphysics, religion, and politics. The first concerns perception and the world, and the individual’s interaction with both. The second, the moralities of creator/creation relationships. The …

What You Can't Have Won't Hurt You - The Real Safety Objective Of The Firearms Safety And Consumer Protection Act, Dennis B. Wilson Jan 2005

What You Can't Have Won't Hurt You - The Real Safety Objective Of The Firearms Safety And Consumer Protection Act, Dennis B. Wilson

Cleveland State Law Review

This article examines an aspect of the debate described above. It begins by describing the federal firearms safety regulation that does exist and explaining the reason that there is relatively little federal firearms safety regulation. It will then examine one legislative proposal to subject firearms to federal safety regulation, the Firearms Safety and Consumer Protection Act of 2003 (Firearms Safety Act) and compare it with the law that has been applied to seek to ensure the safety of other consumer products for over thirty years, the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA). That comparison will demonstrate that the genuine objective of …

Simulation In Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities, Amr Arisha, Paul Young Jan 2005

Simulation In Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities, Amr Arisha, Paul Young

Conference papers

Semiconductor manufacturing is one of the most complex industries in terms of technology and manufacturing procedure. The life cycle of a semiconductor facility (FAB) has many phases, in their life cycle including capacity planning, new products introduction, variation of products/technologies, and decline phase. The complexity of the manufacturing and the external forces from markets and technology growth make predicting the effects of changes in the manufacturing system problematic. Simulation, if used correctly, is a powerful hands-on tool which may be used to give a better insight of the effect of engineering/management decisions on the performance of the manufacturing system. While …

Legal Reasoning, Phoebe C. Ellsworth Jan 2005

Legal Reasoning, Phoebe C. Ellsworth

Book Chapters

For more than a century, lawyers have written about legal reasoning, and the flow of books and articles describing, analyzing, and reformulating the topic continues unabated. The volume and persistence of this "unrelenting discussion" (Simon, 1998, p. 4) suggests that there is no solid consensus about what legal reasoning is. Legal scholars have a tenacious intuition - or at least a strong hope - that legal reasoning is distinctive, that it is not the same as logic, or scientific reasoning, or ordinary decision making, and there have been dozens of attempts to describe what it is that sets it apart …
