Admissibility Of Craniofacial Superimposition Evidence As A Means Of Forensic Identification In Malaysia / Amar Singh Ishar Singh, Ishar Singh Amar Singh
Student Works (2000-2009)
Craniofacial superimposition is a method of comparing the characteristic features of a skull with a photograph of a person whose identity is known. As a technique to aid the personal identification of unknown human remains, it is not new, and its application can be traced back to the late 19th Century. It can be used not only in the identification of the dead but also the living and is fast becoming an important method in forensic anthropology. This is because surveillance cameras are often employed as silent witnesses in crime scenes such as at banks, convenience stores and airports. This …

Network Security Tools-Firewall / Ding Khoon Chong, Khoon Chong Ding
Student Works (2000-2009)
A firewall is a system or group of systems that enforces an access control policy between two or more networks. The actual means by which this is accomplished varies widely, but in principle, the firewall can be thought of as pair of mechanisms: one which exists to block traffic, and the other which exists to permit traffic. Some firewall place a greater emphasis on blocking traffic, while others emphasize permitting traffic. Probably the most important thing to recognize about a firewall is that it implements an access control policy. If we do not have a good idea of what kind …

Real-Time Realistic Rendering And High Dynamic Range Image Display And Compression, Ruifeng Xu
Real-Time Realistic Rendering And High Dynamic Range Image Display And Compression, Ruifeng Xu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the many issues that arise from the visual rendering problem. Of primary consideration is light transport simulation, which is known to be computationally expensive. Monte Carlo methods represent a simple and general class of algorithms often used for light transport computation. Unfortunately, the images resulting from Monte Carlo approaches generally suffer from visually unacceptable noise artifacts. The result of any light transport simulation is, by its very nature, an image of high dynamic range (HDR). This leads to the issues of the display of such images on conventional low dynamic range devices and the development of …

Developmental Fmri Study: Face And Object Recognition, Ann D. Gathers
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Visual processing, though seemingly automatic, is complex. Typical humansprocess objects and faces routinely. Yet, when a disease or disorder disrupts face andobject recognition, the effects are profound. Because of its importance and complexity, visual processing has been the subject of many adult functional imaging studies. However, relatively little is known about the development of the neural organization andunderlying cognitive mechanisms of face and object recognition. The current projectused functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify maturational changes inthe neural substrates of face and object recognition in 5-8 year olds, 9-11 year olds, andadults. A passive face and object viewing task revealed cortical …
Microelectrode Array Studies Of Normal And Disease-Altered L-Glutamate Regulation In The Mammalian Central Nervous System, Brian Keith Day
Microelectrode Array Studies Of Normal And Disease-Altered L-Glutamate Regulation In The Mammalian Central Nervous System, Brian Keith Day
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
L-glutamate (Glu) is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Monitoring extracellular Glu is critical to understanding Glu regulation to discriminate physiological and pathological roles. To overcome the limitations of previous in vivo extracellular Glu studies, we developed Glu selective microelectrode arrays with better spatial and temporal resolutions than commonly used techniques like microdialysis. We used these microelectrode arrays to characterize basal and potassium-evoked Glu neurotransmission in the normal rat brain. We then investigated disease-related Glu alterations in a rat model of Parkinson's disease and normal Glu regulation in young and aged rhesus monkeys. In the normal …
