Trans-10,Cis-12 Cla Increases Adipocyte Lipolysis And Alters Lipid Droplet-Associated Proteins: Role Of Mtor And Erk Signaling, Soonkyu Chung, Jonathan Mark Brown, Maria Boysen Sandberg, Michael Mcintosh Jan 2005

Trans-10,Cis-12 Cla Increases Adipocyte Lipolysis And Alters Lipid Droplet-Associated Proteins: Role Of Mtor And Erk Signaling, Soonkyu Chung, Jonathan Mark Brown, Maria Boysen Sandberg, Michael Mcintosh

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Lipid droplet-associated proteins play an important role in adipocyte triglyceride (TG) metabolism. Here, we show that trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), but not cis-9,trans-11 CLA, increased lipolysis and altered human adipocyte lipid droplet morphology. Before this change in morphology, there was a rapid trans-10,cis-12 CLA-induced increase in the accumulation of perilipin A in the cytosol, followed by the disappearance of perilipin A protein. In contrast, protein levels of adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP) were increased in cultures treated with trans-10,cis-12 CLA. Immunostaining revealed that ADRP localized to the surface …

Association Of Signr1 With Tlr4-Md-2 Enhances Signal Transduction By Recognition Of Lps In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Kojii Nagaoka, Kazuhiko Takahara, Kay Tanaka Jan 2005

Association Of Signr1 With Tlr4-Md-2 Enhances Signal Transduction By Recognition Of Lps In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Kojii Nagaoka, Kazuhiko Takahara, Kay Tanaka

Publications

SIGNR1, a member of a new family of mouse C-type lectins, is expressed at high levels in macrophages (Mφ) within the splenic marginal zone, lymph node medulla, and in some strains, in peritoneal cavity. We previously reported that SIGNR1 captures gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, as well as Candida albicans. We have now investigated the precise ligands and innate responses that involve SIGNR1. The interaction of SIGNR1 with FITC-dextran and E. coli was completely inhibited by LPS from E. coli and Salmonella minnesota. Using LPS from various types of rough mutants of Salmonella, we found that …

Genetic And Biochemical Studies On Protein Phosphorylation In The Circadian Clock Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Saul Kivimae Jan 2005

Genetic And Biochemical Studies On Protein Phosphorylation In The Circadian Clock Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Saul Kivimae

Student Theses and Dissertations

Circadian rhythms in physiology and behavior are observed in almost all phyla. Genetically encoded internal clocks generate such rhythms. Identification of gene products required for the generation and maintenance of endogenous circadian near 24-hr rhythms has led to a paradigm of multiple interlocked transcriptional/translational feedback loops as the basis for molecular circadian oscillators in all studied model systems. Protein phosphorylation plays an essential role, regulating the stability, activity and subcellular localization of proteins that constitute the biological clock. This study investigates the role of the protein kinase Doubletime, a Drosophila ortholog of casein kinase Is, in the fruit fly circadian …

Comparative Analysis Of Alternative Splicing In Homo Sapiens, Mus Musculus And Rattus Norvegicus Transcriptomes, Bahar Taneri Jan 2005

Comparative Analysis Of Alternative Splicing In Homo Sapiens, Mus Musculus And Rattus Norvegicus Transcriptomes, Bahar Taneri

Student Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing transcriptomes in the context of all available genome and transcript sequence data has the potential to reveal biologically meaningful insight into functional properties of genes and complexity of genomes. Alternative splicing is one of the major mechanisms contributing to the complexity of genomes. This important cellular process generates several different messenger RNA transcripts from a single gene, expression of which produces structurally and functionally different proteins. Regulation of alternative splicing could be tissue-specific, developmental stage and/or physiological condition dependent. Comprehensive analysis of alternative splicing is essential to understand fully the capacity of genomes and thus proteomes. Comparative analyses of …

The Structural And Functional Analysis Of A Voltage-Dependent Potassium Channel, Vanessa Ruta Jan 2005

The Structural And Functional Analysis Of A Voltage-Dependent Potassium Channel, Vanessa Ruta

Student Theses and Dissertations

Voltage-dependent ion channels are finely tuned to open and allow ion conduction in response to changes in the membrane voltage, a function that lies at the heart of nerve impulse generation and propagation. These channels contain transmembrane voltage-sensing domains that contain highly conserved cationic amino acids known as "gating charges." The gating charge residues move under the influence of the membrane's electric field, a voltage dependent conformational change that induces pore opening. In this thesis, I explore the structural basis of gating charge movement through crystallographic, biochemical and functional studies of KvAP, a voltage-dependent K+(Kv) channel from a …

Exploring The Early Events In The Hiv-1 Life Cycle: From Post-Entry Restriction To Nuclear Import, Tshaka J. Cunningham Jan 2005

Exploring The Early Events In The Hiv-1 Life Cycle: From Post-Entry Restriction To Nuclear Import, Tshaka J. Cunningham

Student Theses and Dissertations

Early events in the viral replication cycle of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) determine the virus' ability to sustain a persistent infection in susceptible host species. However, many of the molecular machinations through which the virus progresses during its earliest moments in the cell's interior remain enigmatic. Similar to other virus families, HIV virions are packed with a specific assortment of viral and cellular proteins that allow them to carry out their unique program for replication inside of target cells. One such protein that is present in incoming virions, HIV-1 integrase, is an enzyme that facilitates the fusion of the …

The Role Of The Glyoxylate Cycle In The Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ernesto Javier Muñoz Elías Jan 2005

The Role Of The Glyoxylate Cycle In The Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ernesto Javier Muñoz Elías

Student Theses and Dissertations

According to the World Health Organization a third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The unparalleled success of M. tuberculosis as a pathogen reflects the bacterium's extraordinary ability to persist in its host in spite of eliciting a robust immune response. Currently available treatment is inadequate and drug resistance is rapidly spreading. New antibiotics are desperately needed. The substrates and metabolic pathways utilized by pathogens during infection are largely unknown and represent an under-exploited area of investigation. Uniquely, evolution of the genus Mycobacterium has involved extensive duplication of fatty acid metabolism genes, including two homologs encoding prokaryotic- …

Too Much Religious Freedom - Infants Infected With Herpes After Jewish Mohel Applies Oral Suction To Circumcised Penises, Jamie Cole Kerlee Jan 2005

Too Much Religious Freedom - Infants Infected With Herpes After Jewish Mohel Applies Oral Suction To Circumcised Penises, Jamie Cole Kerlee

Journal of Law and Health

Does the Constitution absolutely protect the free exercise of oral-genital suction when it threatens the health and safety of human beings, particularly infants? And does the Constitution bar parents from having any remedy for the lifelong physical, emotional, and financial damage that may potentially result from the negligent HSV transmission through metzizah be'peh? This article focuses on the controversial issue of state interference with the Orthodox Jewish practice, a topic recently at the forefront in New York City. Until the government recognizes its duty to provide affirmative regulation of metzitzah be'peh to protect the compelling health interest of infants, thousands …

Digital Asset Management - A Closer Look At The Literature, Franziska Frey, Shellee Williams-Allen, Howard Vogl, Levy Chandra Jan 2005

Digital Asset Management - A Closer Look At The Literature, Franziska Frey, Shellee Williams-Allen, Howard Vogl, Levy Chandra

Books

Digital asset management (DAM) is one of the value-added services many printers provide. It often is included in the top tier along with e-commerce, finishing, and fulfillment. Since DAM is a relatively new concept, certain technical and business issues need to be investigated. Today, DAM is an integral organizational component that companies must adopt if they are to compete in the marketplace. However, many companies find it difficult to implement technological strategies to meet the marketplace challenges of increased competition, increased customer demands, and the demands of Internet revolution. To implement DAM solutions, traditional companies must be able to adapt. …

A Comparative Study Of The Environmental Aspects Of Lithographic And Digital Printing Processes, Sachin Kadam, Mary Anne Evans, Sandra Rothenberg

Books

The printing industry has been changing dramatically for over 20 years. While the majority of print volume is generated by offset lithography, many print operations are bringing in digital technologies as a complement or even replacement for some offset market segments. Amongst the advantages of these new digital technologies are the ability to produce variable data printing and economically viable short-run jobs. At the same time, societal, consumer, and regulatory pressures are driving all areas of industry to examine closely the effects of their operations on the environment. With the advancement and proliferation of digital technologies, the printing industry is …

The Spider, The Bee, The Snail And The Camel: Legal Knowledge, Practise, Culture, Institutions And Power In A Changing World, Harry W. Arthurs

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This keynote address, delivered on the occasion of the 5th Canadian Graduate Law Students Conference, held in Toronto on May 6.7, 2005, addresses the challenges for legal theory, legal practice and education in a globalized environment. Legal education is described as deeply embedded in the changing political economy of legal scholarship and legal practice. With increased subjection of law schools to allegedly clearly definable market demands, strong winds blow through the law schools in North-America and elsewhere. From the LL.B./J.D. program through graduate studies, curricular reform becomes enmeshed in larger considerations of greater inter-school competition and greater compatibility to the …

The Global Cultural Commons After Cancun: Identity, Diversity And Citizenship, Daniel Drache, Marc D. Froese Jan 2005

The Global Cultural Commons After Cancun: Identity, Diversity And Citizenship, Daniel Drache, Marc D. Froese

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The cultural politics of global trade is a new and unexplored terrain because the public domain of culture has long been associated with national sovereignty. States everywhere have invested heavily in national identity. But in an age of globalization, culture and sovereignty have become more complex propositions, subject to global pressures and national constraints. This paper argues three main points. First, new information technologies increasingly destabilize traditional private sector models for disseminating culture. At the same time, international legal rules have become more restrictive with respect to investment and national treatment, two areas at the heart of cultural policy. Second, …

Evolutionary Trajectories, Internet-Mediated Expression, And Language Education, Steven L. Thorne, J. Scott Payne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes the evolution of communication technologies, accompanying transformations in everyday communicative activity, and pedagogical possibilities these tools support in second and foreign language (L2) settings. We begin with an overview of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) and uses of the Internet to mediate intercultural communication for purposes of L2 learning. We then describe generational shifts in Internet technologies and their proliferation and uses, with the majority of our efforts focused on contemporary environments such as blogs, wikis, podcasting, device-agnostic forms of CMC, and advances in intelligent computer-assisted language learning (ICALL). Throughout, we engage in a discussion of praxeological fusions …

The Legal Presumption Of Reason: Noble Truth, Useful Fiction, Ignoble Lie, Ngaire Naffine

Cleveland State Law Review

In criminal law theory and doctrine there appear to be several competing assumptions about the sort of people that we are. My task in this paper is, first, to expound and compare what I see as the three prevailing theories of our rational natures to be found in criminal law theory, doctrine and procedure. Second, I will consider the relation between these theories of our rational natures and the actual practices of the criminal courts. And third, in the course of so doing, I will consider the beneficiaries and casualties of this criminal law theory and practical justice.
